Peptide templated Au@Pd core-shell structures as efficient bi-functional electrocatalysts for both oxygen reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions

Zhuo Zong,Kebin Xu,Dongliang Li,Zhenghua Tang,Wei He,Zhen Liu,Xiufang Wang,Yong Tian

Bimetallic core-shell nanostructures have been gaining considerable research attentions recently, mainly thanks to their versatile applications in many fields, including catalysis, electrocatalysis, electronic, sensing and so on. Herein, we demonstrate a peptide templated Au@Pd core-shell structure for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). By employing peptide sequence FlgA3 as surface capping agent, core-shell structure with Pd nanoparticles coated on the surface of Au nanoparticles were prepared. The Au@Pd core-shell structures demonstrated effective electrocatalytic activities toward both ORR and HER, whereas the catalytic activity was optimized by tuning the Pd-to-Au ratio. Among a series of samples tested, we discovered that the Au@Pd 1.0 sample exhibited the best ORR activity, superior to that of Pt/C and Pd/C, while its HER activity was also among the finest, close to that of Pt/C and Pd/C. The Au@Pd 1.0 sample also exhibited remarkable stability beyond Pt/C and Pd/C in both ORR and HER. Such intriguing electrocatalytic performances are attributed to the core-shell structure induced lattice strain. The results offer reliable pathway for designing peptide templated core-shell bimetallic nanostructures as dual or multiple functional electrocatalysts with excellent electrocatalytic activities and longevity.

Peptide templated AuPt alloyed nanoparticles as highly efficient bi-functional electrocatalysts for both oxygen reduction reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction

Wen Wu,Zhenghua Tang,Kai Wang,Zhen Liu,Ligui Li,Shaowei Chen

Peptide driven metallic nanomaterials fabrication under mild conditions has become a significant research thrust recently, thanks to its capability to generate multifunctional materials with tunable electronic and catalytic properties. Herein, peptide Z1 is employed to fabricate a series of AuPt alloyed nanoparticles with different Au-to-Pt ratios. The morphology is examined by electron microscopic techniques, and well-defined peanut-shape is observed for Au 33 Pt 67 while spherical particles are obtained for the other samples. The AuPt alloys demonstrate effective electrocatalytic activity toward both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and Au 33 Pt 67 exhibits the best bifunctional electrocatalytic performance. Its ORR activity is superior than commercial Pt/C in alkaline media, verified by the positive onset potential (+1.02 V vs. RHE) and large diffusion-limited current density, while its HER activity is comparable with Pt/C, evidenced by the small overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 (−171 mV vs. RHE) and low Tafel slope. Moreover, Au 33 Pt 67 exhibits markedly higher long-term durability than Pt/C for both ORR and HER. The excellent activity and stability for ORR and HER are ascribed to Au alloying Pt induced synergistic effects. The results highlight the advantages of using peptide to fabricate bi-functional or multiple functional electrocatalysts with desirable activity and robust stability.

Detection of Dengue Fever Nonstructural Protein 1 Antigen by Proteolytic Peptide Imprinting Technology and UHPLC–MS/MS

Jinyi Wu,Shuyi Huang,Lei Tan,Yuling Li,Xiaotong Wu,Yong Liang

Dengue fever is caused by mosquito-transmitted dengue virus infection and continues to increase worldwide, threatening public health in tropical and subtropical regions. The primary difficulties in preventing a reduction of the medical burden of dengue fever lies in the lack of effective mosquito control, preventive dengue vaccines, and clinically effective antiviral drugs to treat dengue infections. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is crucial for proper patient care and effective control of epidemics. The present work proposes an alternative strategy for detecting the dengue virus nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) antigen in clinical serum samples by using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) in combination with the molecularly imprinted polymers. Rather than the whole protein, the NS1 signature peptide is selected as a template for molecular imprinting and quantified as a stoichiometric readout of NS1. Three functional monomers with hydrophobic, positively charged, and negatively charged groups were synthesized by click reactions in terms of the signature peptide. These three functional monomers provide abundant recognition sites for the peptide, allowing the peptide template to be effectively imprinted during polymerization. The imprinting conditions were optimized, and the molecularly imprinted polymers were characterized and used for enriching the signature peptide from digested serum samples by solid-phase extraction and then detected by UHPLC–MS/MS. The proposed method is used to detect the dengue virus NS1 in clinical samples and holds significant promise for early confirmation of dengue virus infection.

Rational construction of fluorescent molecular imprinted polymers for highly efficient glycoprotein detection

Xiaoyu Xie,Jing Li,Xueyan Zhen,Liang Chen,Wanqing Yuan,Quan Feng,Xia Liu

The enrichment of glycoproteins by fluorescence molecular imprinting has shown an attractive application prospect, however, its specificity and sensitivity in actual sample analysis remain a significant challenge. In this work, a novel fluorescent molecular imprinted nanoplatform ( [email protected] ) was constructed for the efficient recognition and determination of glycoproteins by combining the glycopeptide template and the post-imprinting modification of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots . The synthetic [email protected] exhibited high adsorption capacity and rapid binding kinetics . Satisfying selectivity and sensitivity were obtained using [email protected] , with an imprinting factor of 7.71 and a limit of detection of 0.20 μg mL −1 , respectively. The efficiency and applicability of this proposed method were validated by the detection of ovalbumin in egg white samples, showed high recoveries (94.3%−100.2%) and acceptable relative standard deviation (1.79%−7.36%). This fluorescent molecular imprinted nanoplatform provides a new approach to address the limitations of existing protein detection techniques.
