A Hierarchical Energy Dissipated Structure Enabled Strong, Ultra-Tough, and Sustainable Adhesives

Yubing Fu,Song Chen,Xinyu Chen,Haixun Zheng,Xueling Yan,Zelin Liu,Mengtao Wang,Lan Liu

Sustainable adhesives with simultaneous high strength and excellent ductility are important but still challenging. Here, an epoxy adhesive with simultaneously strong, tough, and sustainable features by designing a new hierarchical energy-dissipated cross-linking structure is reported: an annular structure containing quadruple internal B─N coordination boronic esters (AQBN). Under small strain, the AQBN structure is rigid to enhance the tensile strength of the adhesive. With medium strain applied, its non-coplanar ring and internal quadruple B─N coordination can orderly open, providing mechanical energy dissipation and excellent ductility. Therefore, this multilevel structure can endow epoxy adhesives with both high strength and toughness. Besides, the rapid dynamic exchange and internal B─N coordination in boronic esters enable the adhesives to have good sustainability and environmental tolerance, respectively. As a result, the epoxy adhesives exhibit simultaneous high adhesive strength (18.5 MPa), outstanding toughness (work of debonding of 29692 N m −1 ), good chemical/physical recyclability, and excellent environmental reliability (humidity, water, high/ultralow temperature, and organic solvents). This work provides a new strategy for balancing the strength, toughness, and sustainability of adhesives.

Constructing multiple bonding mechanisms with a novel lignin-activated modified polymer core for the fabrication of strong, water-resistant, and mildew-resistant adhesives

Hanzhang Wang,Junyi Zhou,Lanfang Sun,Jieying Lai,Xue Zheng,Bin Lu,Li-Ming Zhang,Wei Zhang

Biobased adhesives play a pivotal role in the development of eco-friendly wood products, and phytogenic protein as a biobased material preparation adhesive has the advantages of sustainable development and green environmental protection. Current researches focus and challenge lie in developing phytogenic protein adhesives that do not emit formaldehyde and possess high water-resistant bonding strength and anti-mold properties through the use of biobased cross-linkers instead of chemical cross-linkers. In this study, lignin, a natural polymer material, was used as raw material to fabricate a novel crosslinker, and a cross-linking network structure was constructed with lignin as the cross-linking core and multiple bonding effects of hydrogen and chemical bonds. In addition, lignin-based crosslinker was prepared to replace the chemical crosslinker while successfully activating lignin to improve the crosslinking degree between lignin and the protein matrix. This study addressed environmental pollution and cost issues associated with the extensive use of chemical cross-linkers in phytogenic protein adhesives. The water-resistant bonding strength of the prepared phytogenic protein adhesive reached 1.21 MPa, and the mechanical properties of the prepared phytogenic protein adhesive were increased by 188 % compared with the ordinary phytogenic protein adhesive and exhibited effective anti-mold properties. This research provided a novel approach for creating sustainable, environmentally friendly adhesives and held significant implications for producing industrial wood-based panels.

Soy protein-based adhesive with superior bonding strength and water resistance by designing densely crosslinking networks

Yunchuan Zeng,Pengwu Xu,Weijun Yang,Hong Chu,Wei Wang,Weifu Dong,Mingqing Chen,Huiyu Bai,Piming Ma

The weak bonding strength and poor water resistance of soy protein-based adhesive have limited its application as a non-formaldehyde adhesive in wood manufacturing industry. In this work, a novel soy protein-based adhesive was prepared by introducing a tailor-made crosslinker with multiple epoxy groups and flexible long chains without any solvent or catalyst via a one-pot strategy. The multiple epoxy groups could react with the hydrophilic groups (hydroxyl and amino) on the soy protein molecules to construct densely crosslinking networks, which was proved by the sol–gel results. The crosslinking networks were beneficial to enhancing the bonding strength and water resistance of the adhesive. Consequently, the dry bonding strength and the wet bonding strength were increased from 1.11 MPa and 0.22 MPa to 2.79 MPa and 1.12 MPa, respectively, marking increments of 151% and 409% when compared to the pristine soy protein-based adhesive. The bonding strength was beyond the standard of type II plywood (≥0.7 MPa, GB/T17657 − 2013). Furthermore, the flexible long chains of the crosslinker was also conductive to improving the toughness of the adhesive. Therefore, this work may open a feasible way to produce non-formaldehyde adhesives with superior bonding strength and water resistance, and thus broadening the application of soy protein.

Biomimetic catalysis design enables controllable and adjustable cold-set protein adhesive

Zhiqiang Zhu,Nairong Chen,Youhui Huang,Lihui Chen,Li Shuai,Feng Li

Nature excels in synthesizing advanced protein adhesives under mild condition, utilizing enzyme catalysis to achieve controllable and adjustable cold-set adhesion. To emulate this natural prowess in synthetic protein adhesives (SPAs), which are often hindered by low reactivity, weak controllability, and poor selectivity, we developed a biomimetic-enzyme-catalysis strategy to successfully construct SPAs with cold-set adhesion function via a facile one-pot method. By employing magnesium oxide (MgO) as a catalyst, the resultant adhesive demonstrated enhanced and versatile adhesion capabilities (1.67/0.98 MPa to wood for dry/wet condition, respectively), with controllable and adjustable adhesion by tailoring crosslinked and catalytic sites. Moreover, this design was applicable to various types of crosslinkers and proteins to create more robust cold-set SPAs. The investigation of the catalysis mechanism has revealed that MgO selectively and controllably interacts with adhesive molecules, effectively lowering the energy barrier necessary for successful molecular crosslinks at room temperature. Together with its demonstrated potential in large-scale and long-term applications, our strategy provides a viable pathway for the eco-friendly and scalable production of high-quality cold-set SPAs that rival natural protein adhesives.

Scallop-inspired of multi-bond network protein adhesive with excellent bonding strength, mildew resistance and flame retardancy

Chao Ma,Jie Wei,Bowen An,Yilei Han,Pusen Cao,Shifeng Zhang,Yuxia Chen,Yong Guo

Designing sustainable natural biomass adhesives with high bonding performance (particularly cold-pressing bonding strength) while maintaining excellent coating, mildew resistance, and flame-retardant properties is important for developing formaldehyde-free wood adhesives. Inspired by the wet adhesion system of scallops, we developed a novel bionic soybean meal (SM) adhesive with excellent bonding strength. In this adhesive system, keratin (KT) acts as a source of disulfide bonds (S–S) contributing formation/exchange donor, while Fe 3+ ions formed dynamic coordination bonds with carboxyl groups and tannic acid, resulting in strong adhesion. The multiple crosslinking network system synergistically enhanced the adhesion, resulting in a cold-pressing bonding strength of 582.4 kPa, which is an improvement of 171.3 %. The dry and wet bonding strength was 3.19 MPa and 1.34 MPa, which was increased to 73.4 % and 97.1 % compared to the SM adhesive, respectively. Additionally, the adhesive exhibited desirable mildew resistance (under storage for 15 days) and superior flame resistance, which was attributed to the synergistic inhibition by the metal cations and phenolic hydroxyl groups. The design of this bionic system offers a novel approach for developing environmentally friendly wood adhesives.

Preparation of high-performance antibacterial/antifungal citric acid–starch adhesives based on physical entanglement and chemical crosslinking

Mengyao Liu,Wenrui Yao,Junyue Shan,Hao Zheng,Yueqiang Yang,Lijun Cao,Bei Qi,Haiyan Tan,Ce Sun,Xianquan Zhang,Yanhua Zhang

Starch-based wood adhesives are widely used as environmentally friendly and formaldehyde-free alternatives in the manufacturing of wood products. However, their poor water resistance and inability to inhibit bacterial/fungal growth limit their practicality. To address this issue, a physicochemical double-crosslinked network structure between citric acid, starch, and wood was prepared in this study by physically entangling the wood structure and chemically crosslinking the starch molecules, with citric acid preventing the activity of various enzymes and denatured proteins within microbial cells, thereby inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth. In water resistance cycling tests, the resulting esterified starch plywood demonstrated a 47.6 % and 13.2 % increase in water resistance compared with starch plywood and commercially available phenolic resin plywood, respectively. In addition, the tighter intermolecular bonding in the crosslinked structure results in a 31 % increase in heat resistance. The physical “nailing” and chemical crosslinking between the adhesive and the wood improved considerably the bonding strength to 98.36 %. The dual role of the physicochemical crosslinking of starch adhesives provides a straightforward strategy for the preparation of inexpensive, water-resistant, and fungal/bacterial-resistant starch adhesives, thus contributing to the promotion of starch adhesives.

Eco-benign PVA/aluminum phosphate as an alternative to formaldehyde-based adhesives in wood-based panels

Zhenzeng Wu,Tingjie Chen,John Tosin Aladejana,Zhutao Zhang,Shengwei Liang,Yuanjiao Xiao,Jiahui Lin,Xiaodong(Alice) Wang,Yongqun Xie

Aluminum phosphate (AP) shows great potential to replace formaldehyde-based adhesives in the wood industry, except for its weak hygroscopic resistance and low wet bonding strength. This study chose PVA as an AP modifier to prepare a PVA–AP organic–inorganic hybrid adhesive (PAP). The preparation, bonding mechanism and heat resistant property of PAP were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result showed that covalent bonds between PVA and AP were built. The mechanical properties of PAP improved remarkably; the dry and wet bonding strength are 2.28 and 0.79 MPa with 15.2% and 690% increment, respectively, compared to the control samples. The thermostabilities of PAP and plywood samples were improved. In conclusion, PVA could effectively improve the hygroscopic resistance and low wet bonding strength of AP adhesives.

Preparation of Novel Epoxy Resins Bearing Phthalazinone Moiety and Their Application as High-Temperature Adhesives

Liwei Wang,Jinyan Wang,Yu Qi,Fengfeng Zhang,Zhihuan Weng,Xigao Jian

Most polymer-based adhesives exhibit some degree of degradation at temperatures above 200 °C, and so there is a need for the development of adhesives that can be used at high temperatures. A series of poly(phthalazinone ether nitrile sulfone ketone)s terminated with epoxy (E-PPENSK) and amine (A-PPENSK) groups have been prepared, which have been used as precursors can be applied for high-temperature resistant epoxy adhesives. The structured of these E-PPENSK (epoxy resin) and A-PPENSK (curing agent) components have been characterized by1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform–infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR) studies, with the effects of molecular weights and molar ratios on the gel content of their polymers being determined. Cured epoxy resins derived from E-PPENSK and A-PPENSK showed good thermal stability, with an optimal resin retaining 95% of its weight at 484 °C, which gave a char yield of 62%. This adhesive was found to exhibit good mechanical strength, with a single-lap adhesive joint (A-3000/E-6000) exhibiting a shear strength of 48.7 MPa. Heating this adhesive at 450 °C for 1 h afforded a polymer that still exhibited good shear strength of 17.8 MPa, indicating that these adhesives are potentially good candidates for high-temperature applications. Keywords:poly(aryl ether);phthalazinone;epoxy adhesive;high-temperature resistant

Tough sustainable bio-based soybean protein adhesive with salt-bridge hydrogen bonds

Lulu Chen,Jin Qian,Chunmei Xu,Zhuqing Liu,Wenjia Han,Xingxiang Ji

Soy protein adhesives have great potential in replacing traditional petrochemical adhesives to produce eco-friendly and formaldehyde-free plywood. However, weak toughness, poor water resistance and low mold resistance during their usage have severely limited their application in practical production. In this study, we introduced bio-based sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) and lauroyl arginine ethyl ester hydrochloride (LAE) into the soybean meal (SM) system to increase the network interweaving density through the electrostatic interactions and multiple hydrogen bonds between CMCNa, LAE and SM. Both SM and CMCNa can form highly specific guanidinium-carboxylate salt-bridge hydrogen bonds with LAE, leading to the formation of a non-homogeneous phase structure in the system, which can improve the internal energy dissipation and further enhance the toughness and water resistance of adhesive. The results show that the modified adhesive has good toughness, and the wet shear strength is significantly increased by 128 % to 1.07 MPa, and can be stored for >8 days. The tough, waterproofing and mildew resistant bio-adhesive offers a eco-friendly alternative to the traditional chemical adhesive.

Bio-based sorbitan monooleate as a dual-function crosslinker for strong and water-resistant polyurethane adhesives

Chengxin Xie,Lanlan Su,Zhendong Deng,Wandi Zhai,Xiangchao Pang,Xiaofeng Hao,Yuan Zhu

The development of sustainable, high-performance adhesives has remained a challenge, hindered by the intrinsic trade-off between eco-friendliness and robust functionality, required for demanding applications. This is particularly true for waterborne polyurethane (WPU) adhesives, whose use in the plywood industry is limited by insufficient mechanical strength and poor water resistance. In this study, a bio-based molecule sorbitan monooleate (SP) was introduced as a dual-function crosslinker to enhance the mechanical and hydrophobic properties of WPU wood adhesives. The unique molecular structure of SP, featuring synergistic polyhydroxyl groups and a long hydrophobic oleic acid chain, was precisely engineered to construct a dense (215.06 mol/m 3 ) three-dimensional network within the WPU matrix, abbreviated as WPU-SP x . This molecular-level design by introducing biomolecule SP yield a dramatic, synergistic enhancement of the final plywood composite's properties. Compared to the unmodified WPU group, the static bending strength and bonding strength of the optimized WPU-SP x plywood was enhanced by 435.7 % and 299.0 %, respectively. Concurrently, the WPU-SP x plywood composite exhibited exceptional dimensional stability against moisture, with its delamination rate and volumetric expansion suppressed to a mere 3.92 % and 0.52 %, demonstrating a remarkable improvement over the unmodified WPU group. This study validates a novel concept where bio-based molecules with designed functionalities can simultaneously enhance the mechanical and hydrophobic properties of polymer networks, offering a scalable and green strategy to generation advanced sustainable materials that meet industrial performance demands.

Effect of Lignin Structure Characteristics on the Performance of Lignin Based Phenol Formaldehyde Adhesives

Xinwen Xu,Haiming Li,Xing Wang,Haiqiang Shi,Meihong Niu,Yongchao Zhang,Zhiwei Wang,Yanzhu Guo

As the second most abundant biopolymer, lignin remains underutilized in various industrial applications. Various forms of lignin generated from different methods affect its physical and chemical properties to a certain extent. To promote the broader commercial utilization of currently available industrial lignins, lignin sulfonate (SL), kraft lignin (KL), and organosolv lignin (OL) are utilized to partially replace phenol in the synthesis of phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesives. The impact of lignin production process on the effectiveness of lignin-based phenolic (LPF) adhesives is examined based on the structural analysis of the selected industrial lignin. The results show that OL has more phenolic hydroxyl groups, lower molecular weight, and greater number of reactive sites than the other two types of lignins. The maximum replacement rate of phenol by OL reaches 70% w/w, resulting in organosolv lignin phenolic (OLPF) adhesives with a viscosity of 960 mPa·s, a minimal free formaldehyde content of 0.157%, and a shear strength of 1.84 MPa. It exhibits better performance compared with the other two types of lignin-based adhesives and meets the requirements of national standards.

POSS-reinforced covalent network in epoxy adhesive and its improvement in the high-temperature adhesion, toughness, and transparency

Shi Chengyu,Li Nan,Yuan Qisong,Liu Tao,Cao Qingyuan,Qian Hanqi,Jiang Bo,Wang Jiazhi,Yu Xiangtao

Developing epoxy structural adhesives with excellent high-temperature adhesion remains a great challenge. The incorporation of fillers can enhance the performance of epoxy adhesives, albeit at the expense of reduced high-temperature adhesion properties. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) is considered a promising filler for enhancing high-temperature adhesion properties due to its excellent compatibility and nano cage-structured. Herein, the rigid cage-structured was covalently introduced epoxy adhesives to improve the high-temperature adhesion properties. The introduction of 1 wt% POSS significantly increased the high-temperature (120°C) adhesion strength by 197% and toughness by 283%. The POSS-reinforced adhesive also featured excellent wide temperature adaptability, indicating that it maintained high adhesion strength at various temperatures. Furthermore, POSS drastically enhanced the transparency of epoxy adhesive by three times. It is highly anticipated that this work will open a new avenue of designing epoxy adhesives with the excellent high-temperature adhesion properties and transparency.
