Preparation and Emulsifying Properties of Carbon-Based Pickering Emulsifier

Huihui Lv,Zebo Wang,Jialong An,Zhanfeng Li,Lei Shi,Yuanyuan Shan

Water is increasingly being used as a solvent in place of organic solvent in order to meet the demand for green chemical synthesis. Nevertheless, many of the reaction substrates are organic matter, which have low water solubility, resulting in a low reaction interface and limiting the development of organic-water biphasic systems. A surfactant is typically added to the two-phase system to form an emulsion to increase the contact area between the organic phase and the water. Compared to ordinary emulsion stabilized with the surfactant, Pickering emulsion offers better adhesion resistance, biocompatibility, and environmental friendliness. It possesses unrivaled benefits as an emulsifier and catalyst in a two-phase interfacial catalysis system (PIC). In this study, the amine group (NNDB) was employed to alter the surface of graphene oxide (GO). A stable Pickering emulsion was created by adsorbing GO-NNDB on the toluene–water interface. It was determined that the emulsion system had good stability by analyzing digital photographs and microscope images of droplets at various temperatures, and fluorescence microscopy images of emulsion droplets created by both newly added and recovered emulsifiers. This work provided the groundwork for future applications of Pickering emulsion in interfacial catalysis.

Amine-Cross-Linked Lignin-Based Polymer: Modification, Characterization, and Flocculating Performance in Humic Acid Coagulation

Ruihua Li,Baoyu Gao,Shenglei Sun,Qinyan Yue,Meng Li,Xudan Yang,Wuchang Song,Ruibao Jia

In this study, a lignin-based flocculant (LNF) was synthesized by grafting amine groups into alkali lignin containing papermaking sludge. Characterization of LNF, such as FTIR, zeta potential, cationic degree, viscosity, and molecular weight, showed that the product was a cationic polymer with high solubility. LNF was used with aluminum sulfate (AS) and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) in humic acid coagulation to demonstrate its efficiency. Coagulation behavior and floc properties of LNF+PAC and LNF+AS dual-coagulant were comparatively evaluated. Results showed that the coagulation aid effect of LNF was independent of aluminum species. Addition of LNF could enhance humic acid removal efficiency and floc properties including size, strength, and fractal dimension significantly. The effect of solution pH on coagulation processes was also studied. Dual-coagulants showed the same variation trend as that of aluminum-based coagulants but enhanced coagulation performance during the investigative pH range. Flocs formed at pH 9 and pH 5 achieved maximum floc size in AS and PAC coagulation systems, respectively. Fractal dimension was relatively high at pH 7–9 due to the sweeping effect of aluminum hydrolysates. Overall, LNF brought in charge neutralization and absorption bridging effect and played a positive role in coagulation processes.

Biocomposite based on zirconium and amine-grafted walnut shell with antibacterial properties for the removal of Alizarin red in water: batch and column studies

Dovi Evans,Aryee Aaron Albert,Liu Mingyu,Zhang Xiaoting,Kani Alexander Nti,Li Jianjun,Han Runping,Qu Lingbo

Recent progress has been made in the application of novel zirconium-loaded amine-grafted walnut shells as multifunctional adsorbents for the remediation of Alizarin red (AR) and bacteria in aqueous solutions. The morphology and functional groups of ACWNS@Zr were studied using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) techniques, X-ray diffraction (XRD), pH point of zero charges (pHpzc), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Adsorption and regeneration tests were carried out in batch and column mode. The ACWNS@Zr had a Langmuir maximum capacity of 415.5 ± 6.1 mg g −1 at 303 K. The spread plate technique was used to evaluate the adsorbent’s antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . ACWNS@Zr exhibited inhibitory potential towards S. aureus and E. coli in the suspensions by 53.3% and 15.0%, respectively. Electrostatic interaction and complexation interaction could be the key mechanisms governing AR dye removal. Equilibrium isotherms fit Langmuir models better for both batch and column studies, while adsorption kinetics to pseudo-second-order and Thomas models for batch and column studies, respectively. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, columns’ mass transfer capacity ( B ) increased as the concentration increased due to the enhanced driving force for AR adsorption onto ACWNS@Zr. Regeneration with NaOH solution of AR-loaded ACWNS@Zr was remarkable. Graphical abstract

A highly effective and low-cost sepiolite-based solid amine adsorbent for CO2 capture in post-combustion

Hong Zhu,Simi Li,Junfeng Zhang,Lingkui Zhao,Yan Huang

Post-combustion carbon dioxide capture using inexpensive and highly efficient materials is a powerful tool for lowering industrial CO 2 emissions. Herein, by impregnating acid-modified sepiolite with pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA), a series of adsorbents were delivered. For the comprehensive study of the adsorbents, the textural properties, saturation adsorption experiment, breakthrough adsorption experiment, kinetic models, reaction mechanism, economic evaluation, cyclic and thermal stability were measured. The results exhibited that the optimal H-P-0.9 adsorbent demonstrated a adsorption capacity of 2.47 mmol/g at 50 °C with good regeneration. Considering application to capture CO 2 in flue gas, breakthrough adsorption experiments were studied, a higher adsorption capacity of 2.94 mmol/g at 50 °C (with 5% H 2 O) appeared in contrast to other sepiolite sorbents. The main factors of CO 2 capture process were chemisorption and physisorption by Avrami model. Furthermore, appropriate moisture promoted the CO 2 capture performance of the adsorbent. In addition, the result of in-situ DRIFTs revealed the capture process follows the anion cation mechanism, CO 2 was finally converted to carbamate. The economic evaluation showed that the adsorbent capture 1 t CO 2 at a low price of 2.0 × 10 5 $. These results proved that the sepiolite-based adsorbent may be a potential material for CO 2 capture with low price and excellent adsorption capacity.

Synthesis of amine-modified hierarchical porous carbon from high-carbon coal gasification fine slag for coupled CO₂ capture and mineralization

Weidong Wang,Ying Gao,Meijie Sun,Zhiqiang Xu,Yanan Tu

Coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) is a solid waste produced during the gasification process, and its high carbon content limits its large-scale utilization. However, the preparation of amine modified hierarchical porous carbon adsorbents (HPCs) from CGFS not only reduces the production costs of matrix materials but also achieves high-value utilization. In this study, the high-carbon component of CGFS was utilized as the raw material to successfully synthesize an amine-modified HPCs for coupled CO 2 capture and mineralization via pre-impurity removal, chemical activation, and amine impregnation. Results demonstrated that HPCs exhibited excellent CO₂ adsorption performance. Specifically, the CO₂ adsorption capacities of 20 % PEI@HPC and 10 % TEPA@HPC with optimal amine loading reached 2.11 mmol/g and 1.62 mmol/g at 298 K, respectively. Both demonstrated outstanding CO₂ adsorption-desorption cycling performance and stability after 10 cycles. Furthermore, the amine-modified HPCs effectively enhanced the carbonation efficiency of desilicated slag, with 20 % PEI@HPC and 30 % TEPA@HPC increasing the mineralization efficiency of the desilicated slag from 28.68 % to 75.01 % and 82.69 %, respectively. Finally, this study elucidated the mechanism of coupled CO₂ capture and mineralization with amine-modified HPCs. The adsorption isotherm models revealed that CO₂ adsorption on the amine-modified HPCs was influenced not only by physical adsorption but also through chemical adsorption dominated by amine functional groups. In this study, a cost-effective CGFS was used as the raw material to synthesize amine-modified HPCs with excellent CO 2 adsorption performance. This approach was expected to address the issues of single-source and expensive matrix materials and had some potential for industrial- scale utilization.

Amine modified potassium-based composite adsorbents prepared by spray granulation method for enhanced CO2 capture performance

Yueyue Gao,Yiqian Yao,Chuanwen Zhao,Pu Huang,Yafei Guo,Jian Sun

The capture of CO 2 from flue gas after combustion using solid sorbents is one of the efficient options for reducing CO 2 emissions from fossil fuel-fired power plants. To satisfy the requirement of large quantities flue gas treatment, the CO 2 capture capacities of the solid sorbents must be focused on. In this study, K 2 CO 3 /Al 2 O 3 adsorbents were prepared via spray granulation, achieving an optimal CO 2 adsorption capacity of 1.89 mmol/g at a potassium carbonate loading of 30 wt%. To address the limitations of potassium-based adsorbents, we further enhanced the performance by incorporating polyethyleneimine (PEI), an amine-functionalized material known for its high CO 2 affinity, in the K30Al adsorbent. A series of potassium-amine composite adsorbents were synthesized with varying PEI loadings (1 wt%, 3 wt%, 5 wt%, and 7 wt%). Remarkably, a synergistic effect between K 2 CO 3 and PEI was observed, with the 5 wt% PEI loading yielding the highest CO 2 adsorption capacity of 2.19 mmol/g, representing a 16 % improvement over the unmodified adsorbent. This represents a novel K30Al-P5 composite adsorbent successfully fabricated through deposition of a small amount of PEI onto pre-synthesized K30Al substrate via the spray granulation method. Comprehensive characterization, including adsorption capacity, cyclic stability, and structural properties, revealed that the enhanced performance is attributed to the optimized interaction between K 2 CO 3 and PEI, which facilitates CO 2 chemisorption and diffusion. This study not only demonstrates a significant improvement in CO 2 capture efficiency but also provides a scalable and cost-effective strategy for designing high-performance adsorbents.

Molecular synergistic strategy to fabricate bilirubin medical adsorbent material for hyperbilirubinemia hemoperfusion

Kaiwang Ma,Dahu Yao,Junping Chen,Yang Li,Chonggao Zhao,Gaofeng Liang

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (jaundice) is a common disease with high incidence. Currently, hemoperfusion (blood exchange transfusion) is always used for the treatment of severe hyperbilirubinemia. However, there are several limitations of blood exchange transfusion, such as the lack of a safe blood supply and blood transfusion complications, while the main problem of hemoperfusions is the inefficient performance of current bilirubin absorbent, which makes it impossible to administer to the neonatal hyperbilirubinemia cases. Identification of a bilirubin hemoperfusion adsorbent with overall excellent performance is the most crucial key to solving the above clinical problems. In this work, a novel bilirubin adsorbent was customized based on molecular design strategy, namely, functional polymeric microspheres were first fabricated by the copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate with other monomers, and then modified with an amine component, followed by linking with a functional spacer molecule, and finally immobilized with a functional ligand (albumin). Its chemical and physical properties were characterized; its adsorption performances for bilirubin were investigated under clinical conditions; its medical safety were evaluated by hemolysis test, thrombotest, and platelet adhesion test. The results showed that the adsorbent had good adsorption performance for bilirubin compared to a popular commercial clinical bilirubin hemoperfusion column; and it also had excellent medical safety evaluations. This study sheds a new light on how to develop hemoperfusion bilirubin adsorbents with overall good clinical performance as well as a reference for later studies on this topic.
