High-performance pulse light stable perovskite indoor photovoltaics

Chen Li,Haoxuan Sun,Min Wang,Shan Gan,Da Dou,Liang Li

Perovskite solar cells offer great potential as a sustainable power source for distributed electronic devices that operate indoors. However, the impact of advanced lighting technology , especially the widely used pulse width modulation (PWM) technology, on perovskite photovoltaics has been ignored. Herein, for the first time in photovoltaics, we find that the light impact emitted by the PWM lighting system caused dynamic strain in perovskite thin films , induced phase separation, and accelerated the generation of metallic lead (Pb 0 ) defects, leading to irreversible degradation of the cell performance after 27 h ( T 80 ). To address this issue, formamidinium triiodide (FAI 3 ) is chosen to treat the surface of the perovskite and release residual stress, resulting in reduced lattice deformation during dynamic strain processes. Meanwhile, it suppresses harmful Pb 0 defects and reduces V oc loss at low light intensity . The champion device achieves impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 35.14% and retains 99.5% of the initial PCE after continuous strobe light soaking for 2160 h.

Antimicrobial mechanism of pulsed light for the control of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and its application in carrot juice

Yulin Zhu,Changzhu Li,Haiying Cui,Lin Lin

As a non-thermal sterilization method, pulsed light (PL) has been widely applied in food industries to control the microbial contamination, however little is known about the antimicrobial mechanism of PL. This study deeply investigated the antimicrobial mechanism of PL against Escherichia coli O157:H7 ( E. coli O157:H7). The changes of morphology, endoenzyme, entocyte, respiratory metabolism and DNA of E. coli O157:H7 after PL treatment were emphatically studied. TEM and SEM results exhibited that cell integrity was destroyed heavily after PL treatment. Entocyte including proteins, ATP and DNA were reduced remarkably for PL-treated samples. In addition, the activity of ATPase, β-galactosidase, alkaline phosphatase, topoisomerase, as well as the metabolism were inhibited for E. coli O157:H7 with PL treatment. The electron spin resonance spectrum validated the production of hydroxyl radical by PL, thus resulting in the elevation of intracellular reactive oxygen and the acceleration of cell death. Finally, PL displayed better antibacterial activity in carrot juice without adverse effect on its quality.

Periodic intense illumination in gas-solid phase photocatalysis: Efficient VOCs degradation at extremely low duty cycles

Zeyu Duan,Jianping Sheng,Qijun Tang,Xinru Chen,Ying Jia,Fan Dong,Haiqiang Wang,Zhongbiao Wu

In this study, we report efficient gas–solid phase photocatalytic reaction by employing controlled periodic illumination, intense pulsed light (IPL) technique, at extremely low duty cycles. Compared with traditional continuous illumination, IPL exhibits superior photocatalytic performance, excellent economic advantages and extremely low duty cycles. Up to now, it is the first time that IPL has been applied in gas–solid phase photocatalytic reactions coupled with multiple photocatalysts. It is demonstrated by experiments that the pulsed xenon lamps can release a large number of photons in short pulsed time, leading to a much stronger photocurrent response than that triggered by a conventional xenon lamp. Taking photocatalytic benzenes degradation as the target reaction, in-situ EPR confirmed that the IPL system can generate a large number of reactive radicals, and thus can degrade benzenes efficiently even with almost negligible illumination period.

Pulsed light treatment reduces the growth and patulin production of Penicillium expansum and its application in apple preservation

Feifei Wang,Changrong Cao,Yiliang Cai,Xianglong Chen,Haiyan Lin,Chenggang Cai,Ruiyu Zhu

Penicillium expansum is a major pathogen causing blue mold rot in fruits and vegetables. Given the increasing concerns over the use of chemical fungicides in postharvest treatments, this research explores the effects of pulsed light (PL) on the growth and patulin production of P. expansum . Our results exhibited that PL significantly suppressed spore germination and mycelial growth while impairing the cell membrane integrity. Mechanistic studies revealed that PL treatment caused disruption of antioxidant defense systems and the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to the oxidative damage and mitochondrial dysfunction. Moreover, PL treatment significantly downregulated the expression of key genes associated with P. expansum growth and patulin biosynthesis. Specifically, the expression levels of global regulators CreA and LaeA were decreased by 39 % and 62 %, and 47 % and 82 % after PL30 and PL90 treatments, respectively. Additionally, genes within the patulin biosynthesis gene cluster, including patA , patK , patN , and patL , were significantly downregulated. In apples with PL90-treated P. expansum , the rot onset was delayed by 4 d. On day 7, PL90 reduced lesion diameter by 87.9 %, decay incidence by 67 %, and patulin content by 95 %. The findings indicate that PL is an effective technology for controlling postharvest diseases in fruits, making it a promising alternative to chemical treatments.

Effect on lipoxygenase pathway and flavor stabilization of postharvest strawberries by intense pulsed light treatment

Qiang Liu,Haizhen Ding,Tingting Zhang,Dandan Zhou,Tong Zhu,Leiqing Pan,Gaoxing Ma,Weijie Lan,Siqi Zhao,Qiuhui Hu,Chao Ding

A non-thermal pretreatment method was developed to improve the flavor stability of strawberries using an intense pulsed light during postharvest storage . The physicochemical properties, volatile organic compounds (free and bound), enzyme activities , and key gene expressions were investigated during 7-day storage. A 23.67% decrease in the decay ratio was obtained in IPL-treated with 2.0 Hz frequency for 60 s compared to the control. A more stable surface color was obtained at the end of the storage period. A total of 21 f-VOCs and 13 b-VOCs were quantitatively identified. IPL treatment promoted the contents of free aldehydes, esters, and ketones. The content of (E)− 2-heptenal in the IPL-treated strawberries was 1.90 times higher than that in control. The variation in the total content of b-VOCs was less than 31.61% that in the control group. Correspondingly, IPL treatment inhibited the activities of fatty acid metabolism enzymes and decreased LOX activity by 26.3% after storage. Aroma-related genes, including FaLOX , FaADH , and FaAAT , were down-regulated in the metabolism of specific VOCs following IPL treatment. This work provided evidence about the practical application of IPL in inhibiting the activity of enzyme in the LOX pathway, thereby improving the flavor stability of strawberries under non-thermal process conditions.

Effect of pulsed light on activity and structural changes of horseradish peroxidase

Bei Wang,Yanyan Zhang,Chandrasekar Venkitasamy,Bengang Wu,Zhongli Pan,Haile Ma

The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of pulsed light on the activity and structure of horseradish peroxidase in buffer solution. Enzyme residual activities were measured. Surface topography, secondary, and tertiary structures of horseradish peroxidase were determined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. Results showed that a complete inactivation of horseradish peroxidase was achieved by application of 10 pulses of pulsed light treatment at an intensity of 500   J/pulse. The AFM analysis revealed that the aggregation of enzyme protein increased and surface roughness decreased with the increase in the treatment time. Fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy analysis exhibited that pulsed light destroyed the tertiary and secondary protein structures. The β-sheet composition was decreased while β-turn and random coils were increased. Pulsed light could effectively inactivate horseradish peroxidase by destroying the secondary and tertiary structures of protein in the active center of the enzyme.

An Ultrabroadband Mid-Infrared Pulsed Optical Switch Employing Solution-Processed Bismuth Oxyselenide

Xiangling Tian,Hongyu Luo,Rongfei Wei,Chunhui Zhu,Qianyi Guo,Dandan Yang,Fengqiu Wang,Jianfeng Li,Jianrong Qiu

Pulsed lasers operating in the mid-infrared (3–25 µm) are increasingly becoming the light source of choice for a wide range of industrial and scientific applications such as spectroscopy, biomedical research, sensing, imaging, and communication. Up to now, one of the factors limiting the mid-infrared pulsed lasers is the lack of optical switch with a capability of pulse generation, especially for those with wideband response. Here, a semiconductor material of bismuth oxyselenide (Bi 2 O 2 Se) with a facile processibility, constituting an ultrabroadband saturable absorber for the mid-infrared (actually from the near-infrared to mid-infrared: 0.8–5.0 µm) is exhibited. Significantly, it is found that the optical response is associated with a strong nonlinear character, showing picosecond response time and response amplitude up to ≈330.1% at 5.0 µm. Combined with facile processibility and low cost, these solution-processed Bi 2 O 2 Se materials may offer a scalable and printable mid-infrared optical switch to open up the long-sought parameter space which is crucial for the exploitation of compact and high-performance mid-infrared pulsed laser sources.

Pulsed light irradiation improves degradation of ginkgolic acids and retainment of ginkgo flavonoids and terpene trilactones in Ginkgo biloba leaves

Fengnan Li,Isaac Duah Boateng,Simeng Chen,Xiao-Ming Yang,Desy Anggraini Soetanto,Weimin Liu

Although high temperature processing is a traditional physical processing method used to degrade ginkgolic acid (GA) in Ginkgo biloba L., it leads to loss of abundant bioactive compounds in G. biloba leaves (GBL) such as ginkgo flavonoids , ginkgolides, etc. Pulsed light (PL) is a prospective non-thermal technique that might be a possible solution to the above problem. In this research, the impact of PL and heating pretreatment on GA, ginkgolides and bilobalide, flavonoid profile, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD), antioxidant capacity , and total phenolics content (TPC) of GBL was evaluated. Besides, an ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/orbitrap High-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS) was employed to gain insight into the degradation pathway of GA C13:0. The findings showed that fluences of 0.52 J/cm 2 for 300 s reduced GA by 19.94%, while heating at 180 °C for 300 s only reduced the GA by 7.04%. Moreover, the ginkgo flavonoids and terpene trilactones (bilobalide and ginkgolides A to C) in GBL were effectively retained after PL irradiation but significantly reduced by heating at 180 °C. Ginkgo leaves irradiated by PL for 200 s had the highest antioxidant capacity and TPC, while heating produced opposite results. Pulsed light and heating treatments significantly inactivated PPO and POD, but PL preserved color of leaves (lower total color change). UPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS results showed that PL irradiation degraded GA C13:0 by removing the hydroxyl or carboxyl group of the benzene ring. These findings demonstrate that PL treatment can improve quality of GBL, opening a broader way for its applications in food industry.
