Evaluation and mechanisms of internal stress development in high-build epoxy protective coatings during thermal cycling

Weiwei Li,Chunyang Wei,Jiyun Tang,Zongkui Li,Xiaowei An,Qi Li,Jingjing Wang,Liwei Liu

Long-term protection in highly corrosive environments has advanced to use high-solid coatings with high thickness, known as high-build coatings. However, these coatings were found to be more susceptible to cracking and delamination failures in-service with temperature variations. To understand how a high-build film is stressed at different temperatures, we developed an efficient measurement method by employing imaging scanning device and image analysis to quantitatively evaluate internal stress in two purposely formulated epoxy coatings with different elasticities through 30 thermal cycles between −25 to 50 °C. The results showed that the magnitude of internal stress was dependent on the coating elasticity, film thickness, and the difference in coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CTE) between the coating and its substrate apart from the service temperature and the thermal cycles. Moreover, thicker coating develops a significantly higher internal stress, which explains why cracking or delamination is typically associated with excessively thick coatings. The investigated mechanisms of the stress development during thermal cycling will be a useful guide to formulate mechanically durable high-build coatings.

Effective interlaminar reinforcing and delamination monitoring of carbon fibrous composites using a novel nano-carbon woven grid

Guangming Yang,Xu Feng,Wei Wang,Qin OuYang,Ling Liu

To date, it is still a challenge to simultaneously reinforce and well monitor the delamination of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) using nanocarbon-based interleaf due to the high electrical conductivity of CFRPs. Herein, this work prepares a novel woven grid composed of carbon nanotubes and graphenes (CG) with various grid densities and suitable resistivity. Results reveal that the CG woven grid-based interleaf could significantly reinforce the interlaminar shear properties of CFRPs, i.e. mode II interlaminar fracture toughness and interlaminar shear strength can be improved by 38–60% and 17–25%, respectively. Meanwhile, the relative resistance change (Δ R / R 0 %) of CFRPs at the delamination initiation stage can reach ~12% or more, which is greater than that reported by previous literatures. The results suggest that the prepared CG woven grid can not only greatly enhance the delamination resistance, but also can sensitively monitor the delamination of the highly conductive CFRPs.

An embolism-free nonfouling hydrogel coating with high toughness and lubricity for intravascular medical devices via chain-entanglement mediated topological gelation

Wenzhong Cao,Xianchi Zhou,Wenbin Dai,Zihao Zhu,Zuolong Liu,Kexin Chen,Yu Yan,Hengshuai Bao,Jian Ji,Peng Zhang

Hydrogel coatings have become indispensable for advanced interventional devices owing to their exceptional lubricity, antithrombogenicity, and antibacterial performance. However, clinical adoption has been hindered by the risk of polymer embolism resulting from coating delamination in vascular systems. Herein, we report an embolism-free hydrogel coating strategy based on chain-entanglement-mediated topological gelation to address this limitation. Through an interface-regulated polymerization process, we fabricate a robust zwitterionic hydrogel coating stabilized by interfacial interlinking and enhanced polymer chain entanglement. This design delivers outstanding long-term antimicrobial and antithrombogenic properties and achieves high toughness, ultra-low friction, and wear resistance. Notably, the chain-entangled topological hydrogel exhibits a unique fail-safe mechanism: upon detachment, it undergoes spontaneous aqueous dissolution rather than forming hazardous debris. This approach can potentially reduce life-threatening complications in interventional therapies by eliminating the risk of polymer-induced embolism.

Decapsulating waste photovoltaic laminated modules using a green solvent terpinolene coupled ultrasound: directional bond cleavage and infinite swelling of EVA

Chunmu Wang,Jiahua Lu,Jie Zhu,Jujun Ruan

Decapsulation constitutes the critical initial phase in the recycling of waste photovoltaic (PV) laminated modules. Wet decapsulation has emerged as a prominent research focus. However, the underlying removal mechanisms of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) encapsulants remain insufficiently characterized, and the optimal solvent has not been selected. This article introduces a green alternative solvent terpinolene to decapsulate waste PV laminated modules. The decapsulation parameters were optimized. The waste PV laminated modules could be completely decapsulated under the identified optimal conditions: 2 cm × 2 cm specimens treated with 90 wt% terpinolene solvent under 800 W ultrasound agitation for 55 min. This study reveals the decapsulation mechanism: the ultrasonic field caused the water and terpinolene to produce O· and groups containing methylene radicals. The free radicals approached the directional C-C and C-O bonds in the bridging structure and the directional C-C bonds in the backbones of EVA and oxidized them to make them interrupt and to be grafted. EVA molecules were broken into multiple and smaller organic molecules, resulting in a swelling effect and loss of viscosity, thus prompting the laminated modules to decapsulate. We report for the first time the use of the green solvent terpinolene coupled to ultrasonic efficiently decapsulating waste photovoltaic laminated modules. And this study pioneers the discovery of the infinite swelling induced by terpinolene-mediated radical reactions in PV EVA encapsulants. It provides scientific information and key technologies for the decapsulating of waste PV laminated modules, the recycling of materials and the closed-loop development of PV industry.

Bridging the miscibility gap to fabricate delamination-free dual-layer nanofiltration membranes via incorporating fluoro substituted aromatic amine

Zhen-Yuan Wang,Zheng-Jun Fu,Dan-Dan Shao,Mei-Jin Lu,Qian-Cheng Xia,Hui-Fang Xiao,Bao-Wei Su,Shi-Peng Sun

Delamination of the dual-layer membrane fabricated from immiscible polymers is recognized as the main obstacle to advance the technology. The current work discloses an innovative approach to address the delamination issue by incorporating specific functional groups on the polymer chains. Delamination-free P84®/Ultem® dual-layer hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes were obtained by incorporating 4-Fluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl) benzylamine (FTB) in P84® polyimide . The progressively incorporated FTB on P84® decreases solubility parameter difference and establishes specific intermolecular interactions between the polymer pair which contributes to the interpenetration of molecules at the interfacial region of the dual layers. The interpenetrated network structure at the interfacial region renders the robust integrity of the dual-layer membranes. The one-step fabricated membranes had an over 99% rejection of tetracycline (MW: 444.4 Da) in methanol with pure methanol permeance of 3.7 LMH/bar. The elaborated mechanism may potentially enlarge the scope of selecting immiscible polymers for fabricating dual-layer membranes by molecular designing.

High Sulfur-doped hollow carbon sphere with multicavity for high-performance Potassium-ion hybrid capacitors

Lantao Liu,Yiming Li,Shuaize Wang,Yaping Lu,Jiapeng Zhang,Dengke Wang,Yinghui Ding,Daping Qiu,Jin Niu,Yingchun Yu,Xiaohong Chen,Huaihe Song

S doping is an effective strategy to improve the potassium-ion storage performance of carbon-based materials. However, due to the large atomic radius of S and poor thermal stability, it is challenging to synthesize carbon materials with high sulfur content by solid-phase transformation. In this work, we designed a multi-cavity structure that can confine the molten S during heat treatment and make it fully react, then achieving high S doping (7.6 at. %). As we known, S doping can also effectively increase the active sites of carbon materials to obtain higher capacity. In addition, through different ex/in-situ characterizations and DFT calculations , we confirmed that the S atoms can effectively expand the interlayer spacing of carbon, which facilitates the intercalation/deintercalation reaction of K + , thereby significantly improving the rate performance. Therefore, benefiting from the effect of S-doping, the sample exhibits high reversible specific capacity (401.0 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A/g) and rate performance (167.2 mAh g −1 at 5 A/g). The as-assembled K + hybrid capacitor delivers both high energy density and power density (138.5 W h kg −1 and 7692.5 W kg −1 , respectively). This work provides a new approach to design S content carbon-based materials for high performance K + storage.

Enabling durable electrolyte-free silicon anode in thin sulfide electrolyte membrane-based all-solid-state lithium batteries via failure mechanism study

Miao Ji,Dan Liu,Benben Peng,Yongjian Liu,Xingshu Liao,Deyu Qu

The integration of sulfide solid-state electrolyte (SSE) membranes with silicon-based anodes presents a compelling pathway toward all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) with unparalleled energy density and intrinsic safety. However, the compatibility between thin sulfide electrolyte membranes and volume-altering silicon-based anodes has rarely been explored. Here, we systematically investigate the failure mechanisms of electrolyte-free silicon-carbon (Si-C) anodes when paired with dry- or wet-processed sulfide SSE membranes, identifying two degradation pathways: (1) binder decomposition within SSE membranes and (2) stress concentration-induced interfacial delamination . To address these challenges, we engineer a wet-processed sulfide SSE membrane (∼50 μm thickness) by utilizing a chemically inert polyisobutylene (PIB) elastomer binder and a rigid polypropylene (PP) fabric scaffold. This design synergistically endows the SSE-PIB-PP composite membrane with elastic dissipation (411 MPa modulus) and mechanical reinforcement (34.7 MPa tensile strength) while maintaining high ionic conductivity (2.5 mS cm⁻¹). Operando pressure monitoring tests reveal that the membrane redistributes ∼35.5 % of internal stresses generated during Si volume swings, mitigating chemical decomposition and mechanical fracture. The optimized Li-In|SSE-PIB-PP|Si-C half cells deliver exceptional cyclability with 81.3 % capacity retention after 400 cycles (over 200 days) at 0.1C and a high initial delithiation capacity of 5.31 mAh cm −2 at a loading of 7.63 mg cm −2 . Furthermore, the assembled Si-C|SSE-PIB-PP|LiCoO 2 full cell exhibits decent cycling stability at 0.1C with a high cathode loading of 19.51 mg cm −2 . This work demonstrates the potential of optimizing SSE membranes to address key challenges of alloy-type anodes in ASSLBs and provides critical insight for developing reliable high-energy-density ASSLBs.
