The objective of this work was to examine the influence of poly (2-acryloylamino-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) branches grafted onto starch molecules upon viscosity stability, adhesion and desizability of corn starch for warp sizing. A series of starch- g -PAMPS samples with different grafting ratios were prepared by graft copolymerization of acid-converted starch (ACS) with different amounts of 2-acryloylamino-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), respectively, in an aqueous medium . The influence of the grafted PAMPS branches on the adhesion of starch to cotton and viscose fibers was evaluated by measuring the bonding forces of slightly sized cotton and viscose roving and comparing the adhesion of starch- g -PAMPS samples with that of ACS, according to a legal method (FZ/T 15001–2008). Their influences on viscosity stability and desizability were also evaluated. The desizability was investigated by measuring the time required for breakage of the film in hot water. It was found that starch- g -PAMPS samples were superior to ACS in adhesion to both fibers, viscosity stability and desizability, indicating that the PAMPS branches introduced were able to improve adhesion to the fibers, viscosity stability and desizability of starch. With the rise in grafting ratio, gradually improved bonding forces to both fibers, paste stability and desizability were exhibited. Starch- g -PAMPS showed potential for use as a new starch-based size in the warp sizing of cotton and viscose.

This study revealed the influence of phosphorylation-dimethylammonium chloride acyloxylation (PDACA) on the desizability, film properties, paste stability, and adhesion of biological starch macromolecules . A new starch-based sizing agent, phosphorylated-dimethylammonium chloride acyloxylated starch (PDACAS), was synthesized with degrees of substitution (DS) ranging from 0.033 to 0.065. Compared to control phosphorylated-quaternized starch (PQS, 87.4 %), the desizing efficiency of cotton yarns sized with PDACAS was ~94 %, exceeding the industrial minimum requirement of 90 %. The PDACAS film tensile properties were as follows: elongation at break of 3.31 %–3.78 %, bending endurance of 1131–1537 cycles, and tensile strength of 35.83–28.31 MPa, compared with those of acid-thinned starch (ATS) film (2.74 %, 957 cycles, and 38.12 MPa). The PDACAS had paste stability of ~92 %, compared with 83.3 % for ATS. The bonding forces (an indicator of adhesion to fibers) ranged from 107.1 N to 125.3 N for cotton roving, and 128.3 N to 148.7 N for polyester/cotton roving, which were significantly better than those of ATS (95 N for cotton and 117.9 N for polyester/cotton roving). Overall, PDACA treatment effectively avoided the adverse effect of high DS quaternization on the desizability of PQS and imparted good film properties, paste stability, and adhesion to starch.

Dimethylaminoethyl (DAE) starch was derived by the tertiary amination of acid-converted maize starch (ACS) with 2-dimethylaminoethyl chloride hydrochloride (DAEC·HCl) for strong bonding to polyester fibers and easy removal from sized yarns. A series of DAE derivatives with differential degrees of substitution (DS) of DAE substituents were prepared through the variation in mole ratio of DAEC·HCl to ACS charged into starch amination. The DAE starch was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, DS value, amination efficiency and paste viscosity. The bonding strength was measured using a legal method (FZ/T 15,001–2008) while the desizability was accessed by Hank sizing and oxidant-alkali desizing. The results showed that the amination was able to significantly improve the bonding strength to polyester fibers under mild acidic condition and could prevent the difficulty encountered in quaternized starch desizing. The DAE starch could compete with ACS in desizability during oxidant-alkali desizing. As a result, introduction of DAE groups onto ACS was an effective method for achieving a starch based sizing material with strong bonding and good desizability. Based on the achievements obtained in this work, the DAE starch with a DS value of 0.037–0.058 DAE substituents showed potential application in polyester warp sizing.

This study mainly aimed to reveal the superiority of the positively charged poly( N , N -dimethyl acrylamide) (PC-PDMAA)/poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) structure to control poly(sodium allyl sulfonate) (PSAS)/PEA structure in enhancing the sizing properties (viscosity stability, adhesion to fibers (cellulose-based cotton and hydrophobic polyester), and film properties) and desizability of starch, and avoid desizing difficulty issue of positively charged PATAC-grafted starch, due to its worse desizing efficiency. Also, it aimed to survey the influence of grafting ratio on these properties, to develop a new biobased starch adhesive, PC-PDMAA- g -starch- g -PEA (PC-PDMAA- g -S- g -PEA), for the sizing of cotton and polyester. Under a similar grafting ratio, the PC-PDMAA- g -S- g -PEA (IV) showed significantly superior bonding to both fibers, film elongation and endurance ( p < 0.05), and better paste stability and desizability compared to control PSAS- g -starch- g -PEA (PSAS- g -S- g -PEA, IV # ). This demonstrated that combining the PC-PDMAA/PEA branches could further enhance these properties of acid-thinned starch (ATS) compared to the PSAS/PEA branches. Bonding strengths, viscosity stability, desizability, film elongation, and film endurance of PC-PDMAA- g -S- g -PEA were strengthened with an increased grafting ratio from 0 % to 10.80 %. According to these findings, PC-PDMAA- g -S- g -PEA, a novel starch bio-based adhesive with a grafting ratio of 10.80 %, showed promise for use in cotton and polyester warp sizing.
