Urea-formaldehyde resin covered etched basalt as durable composite coating with antibacterial activity and corrosion resistance

Zhe Li,Hongyu Ma,Hongpeng Zheng,Zhong Li,Fandi Meng,Rui Liu,Emeka E. Oguzie,Li Liu

A coating with both anti-corrosion function and antibacterial ability was developed by means of urea-formaldehyde resin self-assembly. The self-assembled urea-formaldehyde microspheres on basalt facilitate the formation of a good adhesion filler/coating matrix interface, which effectively promoted the corrosion resistance of the coating. Serving degradation of chemical bonds in urea-formaldehyde cause release of formaldehyde as a bactericide on the EBUF coating, thus imparting antimicrobial activity against PAO1 , B.l , and SRB , as observed. The EBUF composite coating thus exhibits combined anticorrosion and antimicrobial activity, suitable for corrosion control in severe environments.

Synthesis of Polyurethane/Poly(urea-formaldehyde) Double-shelled Microcapsules for Self-healing Anticorrosion Coatings

Song Yan,Chen Kai-Feng,Wang Jing-Jing,Liu Yuan,Qi Tao,Li Guo Liang

One-component, catalyst-free self-healing coatings with double-shelled polymer microcapsules have drawn considerable attention due to wide applications. In this work, the synthesis parameters of double-shelled polymer microcapsules and the mechanism of the self-healing process were systematically investigated. Apart from the chemical structure of the microcapsule shell, the shell thickness, the microcapsule size, and the core fraction could affect the self-healing anticorrosion properties. The synthesis parameters were further optimized in terms of the agitation rate, pH, weight ratio of core to shell, and temperature. Under these conditions, the microcapsule shell consisting of a rough surface formed by poly(urea-formaldehyde) and a smooth inner wall by polyurethane was prepared. The size of the microcapsules and core fraction were calculated to be approximately 30 μm and 75%, respectively. The self-healing anticorrosion coating incorporating as-synthesized microcapsules exhibited corrosion resistance in artificially scratched areas, which was further characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Synthesis and characterization of phenol-urea-formaldehyde foaming resin used to block air leakage in mining

Xiangming Hu,Yanyun Zhao,Weimin Cheng,Deming Wang,Wen Nie

In this study, phenol, urea, and paraformaldehyde were used as the monomers for the one-step synthesis of phenol-urea-formaldehyde (PUF) foaming resin that was used to block air leakage in mining. An orthogonal test was used to study the effects of urea amount, catalyst amount, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the foaming property of the resin. The results showed that the optimum parameters for synthesizing PUF resin are as follows: 1 mol phenol, 0.5 mol urea, 3 mol formaldehyde equivalents of paraformaldehyde, and 0.05 mol catalyst at 75°C for 3 h. The infrared and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the PUF resin showed that the chemical structure of the PUF resin was significantly different from that of phenol-formaldehyde resin, indicating that a copolymerization reaction has occurred among the three components, that is, phenol, urea, and paraformaldehyde. In this study, PUF foam was prepared from catalysts and PUF resin. The results showed that the foaming capacity and oxygen index of the PUF foam were significantly improved by using urea, whereas the shrinking percentage decreased with no change in compression strength. Hui Wang,Mingyu Wang,Jinku Zhang,Di Wu,Zhezhe Qi,Xinbei Dong,Xing Zhang,Hongyuan Yan,Yehong Han

A urea-melamine-hexamethylenetetramine resin (UMHR) was synthesized using water as the reaction medium, with hexamethylenetetramine serving as an environmentally friendly crosslinking agent in place of traditional formaldehyde. The resin was optimized as an efficient solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent through optimization of synthetic parameters. A precise detection method for berberine hydrochloride in Pudilan antiphlogistic oral liquid was established by optimizing extraction parameters. The method exhibited excellent linearity, with a correlation coefficient ( r ≥ 0.9998) over a concentration range of 0.40–100.0 μg/mL. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) were 0.094 μg/mL and 0.314 μg/ mL, respectively. Recoveries ranged from 87.9 % to 97.3 %, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 3.2 %. This study presents a novel and environmentally friendly analytical approach for the quality control of traditional Chinese medicine preparations.

Surfactant-Induced Reconfiguration of Urea-Formaldehyde Resins Enables Improved Surface Properties and Gluability of Bamboo

Lulu Liang,Yu Zheng,Yitian Wu,Jin Yang,Jiajie Wang,Yingjie Tao,Lanze Li,Chaoliang Ma,Yajun Pang,Hao Chen,Hongwei Yu,Zhehong Shen

The high-efficiency development and utilization of bamboo resources can greatly alleviate the current shortage of wood and promote the neutralization of CO2. However, the wide application of bamboo-derived products is largely limited by their unideal surface properties with adhesive as well as poor gluability. Herein, a facile strategy using the surfactant-induced reconfiguration of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins was proposed to enhance the interface with bamboo and significantly improve its gluability. Specifically, through the coupling of a variety of surfactants, the viscosity and surface tension of the UF resins were properly regulated. Therefore, the resultant surfactant reconfigured UF resin showed much-improved wettability and spreading performance to the surface of both bamboo green and bamboo yellow. Specifically, the contact angle (CA) values of the bamboo green and bamboo yellow decreased from 79.6° to 30.5° and from 57.5° to 28.2°, respectively, with the corresponding resin spreading area increasing from 0.2 mm2to 7.6 mm2and from 0.1 mm2to 5.6 mm2. Moreover, our reconfigured UF resin can reduce the amount of glue spread applied to bond the laminated commercial bamboo veneer products to 60 g m−2, while the products prepared by the initial UF resin are unable to meet the requirements of the test standard, suggesting that this facile method is an effective way to decrease the application of petroleum-based resins and production costs. More broadly, this surfactant reconfigured strategy can also be performed to regulate the wettability between UF resin and other materials (such as polypropylene board and tinplate), expanding the application fields of UF resin.Keywords:surfactant;urea-formaldehyde resin;bamboo;laminated bamboo veneer;gluability

Development of Phase Change Plywood Composites Using Pickering Emulsion-Based Adhesives for Thermal Energy Storage

Minzhi Chen,Chunlin Fan,Minghao Zhu,Nana Pan,Qi Quan,Xiaoyan Zhou

Wood-based phase change materials (WBPCM) have the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption in plywood structures, but the quest for a streamlined production strategy to facilitate their industrialization remains a formidable challenge. In this work, phase change plywood (PCP) was prepared by phase change adhesive (PCA), in which urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) served as the adhesive and different contents of paraffin wax (PW) as phase change materials (PCM). The use of PCA enabled the efficient and simplified production of wood-based composites with excellent energy-saving properties. By combination of the low thermal conductivity of wood with the energy storage capabilities of PCA, PCP demonstrated a high latent heat capacity of 67.53 J/g at 47.6 °C. 2D correlation Fourier transform infrared (2D FTIR) was carried out to analyze the phase transition mechanism. By adding PCA, the heat transfer time of PCP-3 from 40 to 55 °C was extended by 181%, compared with conventional plywood, which indicated an excellent energy-saving ability. Furthermore, finite element simulation was conducted to statistically simulate the thermal transition process of PCP. Our work presents a strategy for the design of phase change plywood with excellent energy-saving properties, while also enabling large-scale production.

Improving the wet adhesive bonding of bamboo urea-formaldehyde adhesive using styrene acrylate by controlling monomer ratios

Sai Wu,Lulu Liang,Furong Chen,Zheng Yang,Yu Zheng,Yitian Wu,Lanze Li,Gaobo Lou,Juntao Dai,Yajun Pang,Hao Chen,Qun Fang,Zhehong Shen

The utilization of bamboo resources can significantly alleviate the wood shortage and facilitate CO 2 neutralization. However, the adhesive bonding performance of bamboo is not ideal, which greatly limits its application. Therefore, the biggest challenge is to explore a simple and effective method to enhance the bonding between bamboo and adhesive. In this study, we synthesized three butyl acrylate-styrene (BS) emulsions with different monomer ratios and incorporated them into urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins to prepare butyl acrylate-styrene modified urea-formaldehyde (BUF) adhesives. Results show that BS emulsion not only prolongs the workability time of UF adhesives (95 s–108 s), but also reduces the free formaldehyde content (0.38%–0.26%). Specifically, BS emulsion with the highest hard/soft monomer ratio makes BUF adhesive the lowest activation energy, showing the accelerated curing reaction. Specifically, the prepared laminated bamboo-veneer lumber (LBVL) exhibits the best wet-bonding strength and meets the Chinese National Standard, suggesting that BS emulsion with a higher hard/soft monomer ratio can enhance bonding performance. Thus, this efficient method can not only enhance various adhesive properties, but also improves the bonding performance on LVBL, which can greatly ease the shortage of wood resources and speed up the development of the bamboo industry.

Curing kinetics and plugging mechanism of high strength curable resin plugging material

Jing-Bin Yang,Ying-Rui Bai,Jin-Sheng Sun,Kai-He Lv

Lost circulation, a recurring peril during drilling operations, entails substantial loss of drilling fluid and dire consequences upon its infiltration into the formation. As drilling depth escalates, the formation temperature and pressure intensify, imposing exacting demands on plug materials. In this study, a kind of controllable curing resin with dense cross-network structure was prepared by the method of solution stepwise ring-opening polymerization. The resin plugging material investigated in this study is a continuous phase material that offers effortless injection, robust filling capabilities, exceptional retention, and underground curing or crosslinking with high strength. Its versatility is not constrained by fracture-cavity lose channels, making it suitable for fulfilling the essential needs of various fracture-cavity combinations when plugging fracture-cavity carbonate rocks. Notably, the curing duration can be fine-tuned within the span of 3–7 h, catering to the plugging of drilling fluid losing of diverse fracture dimensions. Experimental scrutiny encompassed the rheological properties and curing behavior of the resin plugging system, unraveling the intricacies of the curing process and establishing a cogent kinetic model. The experimental results show that the urea-formaldehyde resin plugging material has a tight chain or network structure. When the concentration of the urea-formaldehyde resin plugging system solution remains below 30%, the viscosity clocks in at a meager 10 mPa·s. Optimum curing transpires at 60 °C, showcasing impressive resilience to saline conditions. Remarkably, when immersed in a composite saltwater environment containing 50000 mg/L NaCl and 100000 mg/L CaCl 2 , the urea-formaldehyde resin consolidates into an even more compact network structure, culminating in an outstanding compressive strength of 41.5 MPa. Through resolving the correlation between conversion and the apparent activation energy of the non-isothermal DSC curing reaction parameters, the study attests to the fulfillment of the kinetic equation for the urea-formaldehyde resin plugging system. This discerning analysis illuminates the nuanced shifts in the microscopic reaction mechanism of the urea-formaldehyde resin plugging system. Furthermore, the pressure bearing plugging capacity of the resin plugging system for fractures of different sizes is also studied. It is found that the resin plugging system can effectively resident in parallel and wedge-shaped fractures of different sizes, and form high-strength consolidation under certain temperature conditions. The maximum plugging pressure of resin plugging system for parallel fractures with outlet size 3 mm can reach 9.92 MPa, and the maximum plugging pressure for wedge-shaped fractures with outlet size 5 mm can reach 9.90 MPa. Consequently, the exploration and application of urea-formaldehyde resin plugging material precipitate a paradigm shift, proffering novel concepts and methodologies in resolving the practical quandaries afflicting drilling fluid plugging.

Study on the Thermal Stability of Urea-Formaldehyde Resin Microcapsules with Nanosilica Incorporation by Molecular Dynamics Simulation and Experiments

Yanfang Zhang,Youyuan Wang,Yudong Li,Zhengyong Huang,Adnan Yaseen,Yaxiong Tan

It is an innovation to self-heal the microdefects inside materials by doping microcapsules. Urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) microcapsule is widely used in self-healing materials owing to its excellent mechanical properties. However, when it is used in electrical insulation materials, the thermal stability of the microcapsules need to be enhanced owing to the relatively high internal temperature of the material under the long-term action of electric field. In this paper, molecular dynamics simulation is used to calculate the properties related to the thermal stability of UF microcapsule with and without nanosilica incorporation. The simulation result shows that incorporating nanosilica can increase the density and glass transition temperature, decrease the fractional free volume of UF materials. The UF microcapsules with and without nanosilica incorporation are prepared experimentally, and thermogravimetric test result shows that incorporating nanosilica can enhance the thermal stability of UF microcapsule; scanning electron microscope result shows nanocomposite microcapsule has more UF debris adhered on its surface. By establishing the interface model of UF and nanosilica to explore the internal mechanism, it is found that the interface interaction between UF and nanosilica is conducive to enhancing the thermal stability of UF material.

Study on the erosion reducing mechanisms of microencapsulated hydroxyl silicone oil with a hybrid shell

Xueyang Li,Rui Wu,Zichao Li,Guo Chen,Hanbin Zhou,Yucheng Zhang,Zhenggang Xiao

The erosion of barrel weapons is becoming increasingly severe with the application of high-energy gun propellants, which significantly reduces the service life. To address this issue, a type of microcapsules with hydroxyl silicone oil and urea–formaldehyde (UF) mixed with nano TiO 2 was prepared. The morphology, element distribution, thermal stability, and chemical composition were characterized by SEM, EDS, TG, and FT-IR, respectively. The results reveal that the structure of microcapsules is intact and nano TiO 2 was successfully embedded in the shell. Erosion simulation test was introduced to synthesize the erosion reducing by microcapsules. The erosion reducing rate could reach 11.63% when 2 wt% of microcapsules were added to triple-base gun propellants. And a deposit layer could be observed on the surface of erosion tubes. However, the limited addition of nanoparticles fails to provide effective protection.

Nitrogen Migration and Conversion in Chars from Co-Pyrolysis of Lignocellulose Derived Pyrolysis Model Compounds and Urea-Formaldehyde Resin Adhesive

Mengyao Guo,Shu Yu,Shu Zhang,Juntao Wei,Wenran Gao,Weina Bao,Lei Shi,Hong Zhang,Deliang Xu

In thermal conversion utilization, nitrogen-rich biomass such as waste wood-based panels will release a large amount of NOxinto the atmosphere, causing serious harm to the surroundings. By means of co-pyrolysis, N in waste wood-based panels can be fixed in chars instead of discharging into the atmosphere in the form of volatile matter, which can reduce NOxemission and lay a foundation for the preparation of nitrogen-rich carbon materials with high added value. As the most commonly used adhesive in the production of wood-based panels, urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive (UF) is the main nitrogen source in waste wood-based panels. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of glucose, ethyl maltol and 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2H)-furanone (DMHF) on nitrogen migration and conversion during UF pyrolysis by adjusting the different proportions of model compounds and UF. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that ethyl maltol and DMHF had lower thermal stability and the pyrolysis process was concentrated in the range of 90–168 °C, which does not coincide with the mass loss temperature of UF. UF can promote the pyrolysis of these three model compounds at the initial stage to some extent. The elemental analysis showed that the N retention in co-pyrolysis chars increased in varying degrees with the increase of the addition of model compounds; the nitrogen retention in chars of glucose-UF, ethyl maltol-UF and DMHF-UF increased by 28.47%, 3.48% and 16.45% with the increase of the model compound content from 50% to 90%, respectively. The XPS results showed that the relative content of N-6 in chars increased with the increase of ethyl maltol content, and the relative content of N-5 in chars increased with the increased addition of DMHF. Glucose had little effect on the distribution of N-functional groups in chars. Keywords:wood;thermal conversion;model compounds;urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive;char;nitrogen migration and transformation

Enhancing the safety of lithium-ion batteries: synthesis and performance evaluation of APP@UF microcapsule electrolyte additives

Tianyu Zhou,Zhixiang Xing,Longtai Qi,Yecheng Liu

A B S T R A C T Ammonium polyphosphate was successfully encapsulated within a urea-formaldehyde resin shell via in-situ polymerization, yielding flame-retardant microcapsules. The synthesized microcapsules exhibited effective flame retardancy, as confirmed by various characterization techniques and ignition tests. The synthesized flame-retardant microcapsules (APP@UF) were uniformly integrated into the electrolyte matrix and subsequently assembled into electrochemical cells for performance evaluation. During thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries, the internal temperature escalates. Upon reaching 210 °C, the microcapsule shell undergoes rupture, releasing APP to suppress the thermal runaway reactions within the battery, thereby achieving lithium-ion battery safety based on the concept of active protection. Furthermore, the microcapsules demonstrated stable dispersion in commercial lithium-ion electrolytes. Coin cells were assembled using electrolyte mixtures containing varying mass fractions of the microcapsules. At an addition level of 2 wt%, the battery retained 85.52 % of its capacity after 100 cycles under constant current charge-discharge conditions. The incorporation of microcapsules enhances battery safety without compromising electrochemical performance, presenting a viable strategy for improving the initial safety of lithium-ion batteries during thermal runaway.
