Effect of polyethoxylated flavonoids (PMFs)-loaded citral and chitosan composite coatings on citrus preservation: From the perspective of fruit resistance

Yurong Li,Long Guo,Juanjuan Wei,Yijun Yao,Li Xu,Zhiqin Zhou

Previous studies have shown that polymethoxylated flavonoids-loaded citral emulsion (PCT) can inhibit the growth and reproduction of Penicillium in citrus; however, PCT is difficult to apply to fruit preservation due to its high fluidity and volatility. Therefore, in this study, we combined PCT with chitosan (CS) to investigate the effect of a composite coating on citrus preservation. The results showed that compared to the control group, the CS-PCT group could effectively reduce the decay rate and maintain moisture availability, color difference, and hardness. Moreover, the contents of nonenzymatic antioxidants and volatile substances with antimicrobial activity were better preserved. In addition, the activities of related antioxidant enzymes were greater in the treatment group, and the expression of the corresponding enzyme-encoding genes was upregulated. Consequently, CS-PCT treatment could effectively maintain fruit quality and improve the resistance of citrus fruits during storage; moreover, it can be considered a nontoxic and efficient citrus preservative.

Physicochemical and microstructural properties of edible film simulating the cell wall of wheat aleurone and its regulation of post-harvest apricot moisture

Minghui Ge,Ruifeng Ying,Meigui Huang

Summary Post-harvest apricot fruits are susceptible to moisture loss and disease leading to quality deterioration. Herein, we identified that the cell wall of the wheat grain regulated the hydration properties of grains. Arabinoxylan/β-glucan/ferulic acid/cellulose (ABF-C) composite films simulating the cell wall of the wheat aleurone layer were prepared and showed excellent thermodynamic properties and hydration properties. Meanwhile, the decay percentage, weight loss percentage and respiration intensity of apricot fruits at 35 days of storage were greatly decreased by 23.5%, 23.93% and 39.95%, respectively, and the shelf life of apricot fruits was extended by 7 days after the coating ABF-8%C composite film treatment. The ABF-C composite films effectively prevented the dissipation of moisture of high mobility in apricot fruits during storage. We provide new insight into moisture regulation mechanism of edible films simulating cell wall structure on post-harvest fruits.

Chitosan-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and sodium alginate bilayer edible films for chestnut preservation

Mengyu Liu,Peiying Zhang,Yanwen Wu,Jie Ouyang

To address the challenge of preserving fresh chestnuts, chitosan (CS), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), nisin (N), and sodium alginate (SA) were utilized in the preparation of a bilayer edible film named CS-HPMC-N/SA, which was compared to the monolayer films CS-HPMC and CS-HPMC-N. In comparison to the CS-HPMC film, the CS-HPMC-N and CS-HPMC-N/SA films exhibited increased water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen permeability, and thickness, while transparency, tensile strength (TS), and elongation at break (EAB) were reduced. The bilayer film CS-HPMC-N/SA showed higher WVP, transparency, thickness, and EAB, but lower TS than the monolayer film CS-HPMC-N. The chestnuts coated with CS-HPMC-N/SA showed lower respiratory intensity and decay rate compared to those coated with CS-HPMC and CS-HPMC-N. These results suggested that the bilayer film CS-HPMC-N/SA, containing nisin, has potential as an edible material for preserving fresh chestnuts.

Fabrication and characterization of novel porous hydrogels for fragile fruits: A case study

Lei Wang,Dong Li,Yaoting Xue,Siyang Li,Xuxu Yang,Li Li,Tiefeng Li,Zisheng Luo

Mechanical damage during transportation impairs fruit quality. Protecting fragile fruits through packaging is essential. Herein, this paper presents a case study of fresh strawberries embeded in porous hydrogels (PHs) to maintain quality and avoid damage during shelf-life period. The hydrogels were biologically fabricated using alginate networks and soy protein isolates to yield a porous structure. With three times of foaming rate, the PH could dissipate 70%–78% deformation energy in the first loading cycles. It also maintained an energy dissipation rate of 51.52% after 200 loading cycles. The strawberries stored in these PHs exhibited a remarkably better quality than those in other package materials after transportation simulation and free-fall tests, their damage indices were inhibited under 14% (above 36% in control). Additionally, during a two-day shelf-life period, rotten rate of strawberries after transportation simulation and that after free-fall tests were detected as 2.49 ± 1.86% (48.33 ± 5.67% in control) and 13.34 ± 3.76% (94.96 ± 3.76% in control), respectively. Moreover, PHs possessed a high specific heat capacity of 3956 ± 49 J kg −1  K −1 and a low friction coefficient of 0.081 ± 0.003, maintaining a low temperature around the fruit and avoiding fruit abrasion. The PHs were also biodegradable. Therefore, the PHs was considered as promising packaging for maintaining fresh and fragile produce.

A crosslinked and percolation network alginate coating for litchi prevention

Xiaonan Yin,Yan Zhou,Yugeng Tang,Deying Kong,Wei Xiao,Lin Gan,Jin Huang,Yongqiang Zhang

The short shelf life of Litchi is due to its rapid metabolism after being harvested. Refrigeration is not a suitable method for preserving litchi, as the browning process of litchi that has been cryogenic will accelerate when it is brought to room temperature. This study introduces an alginate-based coating as a solution to control the post-harvest metabolism of litchi. The coating achieves this by simultaneously establishing crosslink and percolation networks, both of which act as barriers. The percolation network is created using rod-like cellulose nanocrystals , which possess excellent percolation properties. This network effectively reduces moisture loss. Compared to the control group, the coated litchi exhibited a 38.1 % lower browning index and a 62.5 % lower decay rate. Additionally, the soluble solid content increased by 107.1 %. The inclusion of cellulose nanocrystals and the crosslinking of calcium ions enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite membrane . Specifically, the tensile strength and elongation at break increased by 70 % and 366 % respectively. As all the components in the coating are edible, it is environmentally friendly and safe for human consumption.
