Botryosphaeria dothidea, a notorious plant pathogen, is responsible for causing chestnut rot during postharvest storage. This research aimed to assess the antifungal properties of perilla essential oil (PEO) and perillaldehyde (PAE) againstB. dothidea. PEO’s and PAE’s inhibitory effects onB. dothideawere investigated using an agar dilution method, a fumigation method, and an in vivo assay in chestnuts and shell buckets. Based on the results of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, it was confirmed that the main component of PEO was elemicin. The antifungal mechanism of PEO and PAE againstB. dothideawas investigated by conducting staining experiments of the fungal cell wall and cell membrane. PEO and PAE strongly inhibit the mycelial growth ofB. dothideain a dose-dependent manner. The inhibitory mechanism is mainly related to the destruction of the integrity of the fungal cell wall and plasma membrane. Notably, PEO retains its antifungal efficacy againstB. dothideain chestnuts, effectively prolonging their storage life. These findings indicate that PEO and PAE are nontoxic, eco-friendly botanical fungicides, holding promise for controlling postharvest chestnut rot.

In order to the antifungal activity of chitosan (CS) and to obtain a better natural bio-antimicrobial agent, CS was modified with acrylpimaric acid (APA). The grafting sites of APA on CS were controlled by adjusting the reaction time and the ratio of reactants to obtain APA grafted with CS C 2 -NH 2 (NCSAA) and C 6 -OH (CSAA). Intermediates to protect C 2 -NH 2 (PMCSAA) and final sample derivatives (PCSAA) were prepared using phthalic anhydride. The structural and crystal variations of the four derivatives were analyzed and determined by FTIR, 1 H NMR and XRD. The in vitro antifungal activities of the four modified samples against V. mali, C. lunata, A. solani, F. oxysporum f. sp. niveum, and F. graminearum were evaluated by the mycelial growth rate method, and PCSAA was screened for optimal inhibitory effect on V. mali with an EC 50 = 38.66 μg/mL. The SEM and TEM showed that these derivatives cause the loss of mycelial contents by disrupting the ultrastructure of the mycelium, destroying the internal structure of the mycelium, and preventing the cells from carrying out their normal life activities. In vivo experiments showed better curative effect (79.09 % ± 2.00) and protective effect (80.93 % ± 0.03) of PCSAA at 200 μg/mL.

A novel self-catalytic activation approach is developed for the preparation of hierarchically porous carbon from rotten potato wastes. Metals already existing within the rotten potatoes were used as the catalysts and gases emitted during pyrolysis were used as the activating reagents, leading to the cleaner production of hierarchically porous carbon materials without additional reagents. The as-made activated carbon exhibits high BET surface area of 2201 m 2 g −1 , optimal hierarchically porous, and good conductivity of 14.2 S cm −1 . When fabricated into a symmetrical supercapacitor , it displays a relatively high capacitance of 54 F g −1 (29.2 F cm −3 ) at 0.5 A g −1 , and excellent cycling reliability of exceeding 100% retention after 5000 cycles in 6M KOH, and an energy density of 20.8 Wh kg −1 (11.2 Wh L −1 ) in 1 M TEABF 4 /AN. More importantly, the approach outlined herein also offers a promising strategy for cleaner production of advanced activated carbon derived from other biomass wastes.

BACKGROUND Kiwifruit rot is an important disease caused by different fungal pathogens, which can lead to huge economic loss in the kiwifruit industry. The aims of this study were to discover an effective botanical compound that significantly inhibits the pathogens causing kiwifruit rot, evaluate its control efficacy against this disease, and reveal the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS A strain of Fusarium tricinctum (GF-1), isolated from diseased kiwifruit, could cause fruit rot in both Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis and Actinidia chinensis var. deliciosa . Different botanical chemicals were used for antifungal activity test against GF-1 and thymol was the most effective one with a 50% effective concentration (EC 50 ) of 30.98 mg L −1 . The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of thymol against GF-1 was 90 mg L −1 . Control efficacy of thymol against kiwifruit rot was evaluated and the results indicated that thymol could effectively decrease the occurrence and spread of kiwifruit rot. The mechanisms underlying the antifungal activity of thymol against F. tricinctum were investigated, and it showed that thymol could significantly damage the ultrastructure, destroy the plasma membrane integrity, and instantaneously increase energy metabolisms of F. tricinctum . Further investigations indicated that thymol could extend shelf life of kiwifruit by increasing their storability. CONCLUSION Thymol can effectively inhibit F. tricinctum that is one of the causal agents of kiwifruit rot. Multiple modes of action are involved in the antifungal activity. The results of this study indicate that thymol can be a promising botanical fungicide to control kiwifruit rot and provide useful references for thymol application in agriculture system. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Pitaya ( Hylocereus undatus ) fruit is susceptible to pathogens that induce fruit decay after harvest. Cuticular waxes covering the outermost plant surfaces are the first site of plant-environment interactions; however, their changes in response to fruit decay are under-researched. Herein, the surface microstructures and chemical composition of wax on pitayas, as well as their changes in response to fruit decay, were comparatively studied. The varieties ‘Baishuijing’ (BSJ) and ‘Hongshuijing’ (HSJ) were examined after harvest. The fruit appearance, morphology, and wax composition differed between cultivars. The surface of both pitaya cultivars was smooth, although traces of granules and a thicker lipid layer were observed using histochemical staining in HSJ than in BSJ, as well as a higher cuticular wax content. Fruit decay rate increased rapidly in both cultivars under room storage conditions, and greater sensitivity to pathogens was found in BSJ than HSJ. As well as the occurrence of fruit decay, the total wax coverage, very-long-chain primary alcohols, aldehydes, fatty acids, and triterpenoids decreased in BSJ, while remaining relatively stable in HSJ. Correspondingly, the relative gene expression levels of HuKCS11 (−1, 2, and 3) , HuKCS17 , and HuKCS19 (for the elongation of very-long-chain fatty acids), HuCER1 (for aldehydes or n -alkanes), HuFAR (−1 and 2) (for primary alcohols), HuBAS1 (−1, 3, and 4) (for β-amyrin), and HuLUS1 (for lupeol) were considerably modified following fruit senescence during storage. The difference in surface topography and wax accumulation between cultivars might have affected pathogen susceptibility after harvest. These results may help when choosing varieties of pitaya based on surface characteristics and cuticular chemicals. They may also help to optimize strategies for postharvest preservation and storage.

The freshness of food is directly connected with safety, hygiene, and human health. Accurate quantification of biogenic amine level is crucial for assessing the food quality. Therefore, a dual-excitation ratiometric fluorescent probe MCCN based on hemicyanine dye for the examination of biogenic amines was constructed. After the addition of biogenic amines to the MCCN solution, an elimination reaction occurred after a nucleophilic addition reaction to form Schiff base MC-CA , resulting in colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence responses. The probe MCCN solution was blue. After successively adding biogenic amines (cadaverine, n-butylamine and spermidine), the fluorescence emission intensity of probe MCCN at 709 nm reduced under excitation at 650 nm, meanwhile a new fluorescence emission peak emerged at 545 nm gradually increased under excitation at 450 nm, accompanying by a visible color variation from blue to yellow. The probe MCCN also displayed remarkable selectivity toward biogenic amines over other analytes. Based on the above excellent characteristics, the probe MCCN was successfully utilized to detect biogenic amines in the extract supernatant of shrimp and fish during the spoilage process. In addition, photographing the MCCN -loaded food extract supernatant enabled the correlation of color parameters with storage time, affording an accurate and simple method to reveal food spoilage process. The excellent sensing performance makes the MCCN probe a convenient and accurate screening platform for real-time assessing food freshness.

In this study, we developed a method for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous assembly assay and anchoring them with camellia seed cake polyphenols (CPs). Zeta potential analysis demonstrated a higher binding affinity of CP-AgNPs to Penicillium digitatum , which could be attributed to the interaction between the hydroxyl group of CP-AgNPs and the polysaccharide present on the fungal cell wall. Compared to AgNPs, the CP-AgNPs outperformed conventional AgNPs in antifungal activity against P. digitatum . The mechanism underlying this antimicrobial effect involves raising the level of oxidative stress by regulating the expression levels of oxidative stress response genes. In addition, CP-AgNPs/CS showed highly effective in reducing citrus decay levels during chamber storage. In conclusion, the use of CPs as anchoring agent in the in-situ aqueous assembly of CP-AgNPs improved their biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties. CP-AgNPs hold great promise for applications in fruit preservation, especially citrus preservation.

Plant extracts represent a rich repository of metabolites with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Neem (Azadirachta indica) is a medicinal plant considered the tree of the 21st century. In this study, we investigated the antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of propyl disulfide (PD), a major volatile compound in neem seed, against the pericarp browning (BI), microbial decay incidence (DI), and water loss of longan fruit. Fresh longan cv. Shixia samples were packaged in oriented polypropylene (OPP) and polyethene (PE) packages of different thicknesses (20, 40, and 60 µm). Sterile gauze was fixed inside the packages and 500 uL of PD was placed on them to avoid the direct contact of PD with fruit samples. Packages were sealed immediately to minimize vaporization and stored at 12 ± 1 °C for 18 days. Fruit samples packaged in open net packages served as controls. The results showed that fruit treated with PD in OPP and PE packages significantly prevented losses of water, DI, and BI compared to control treatment. PD also maintained the color, TSS values, TA values, pH values, high peel firmness, high TPC content, and high TFC content, and reduced the activity levels of PPO and POD. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis indicated that the exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp of longan peel were smooth, uniform, and compact with no free space compared to control, where crakes, a damaged and loose structure, and a lot of fungal mycelia were found. The shortest shelf life of 9 days was observed in control as compared to 18 days in OPP-20 and OPP-40; 15 days in OPP-60, PE-20, and PE-40; and 12 days in PE-60 packaging films. Therefore, PD as a natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agent, in combination with OPP-20 and OPP-40 polymeric films, could successfully be applied commercially to extend the postharvest shelf life of longan. Keywords:longan;fruit;polymeric films;antioxidant activity;enzymatic browning;neem;propyl disulfide;microbial decay;essential oil

Because of high water loss and rot observed in postharvest sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) roots, a carnauba wax (CW)–based nanoemulsion without or with glycerol monolaurate (CW-GML) was developed by a high-energy emulsification approach. The effects of the two coatings on decay, respiration rate, weight loss, surface color, total soluble sugar, and starch content as well as the sensory quality of sweet potato roots were investigated during storage at 20°C for 50 days. Compared with the control treatment (water) and CW coating alone, CW-GML coating exhibited higher emulsion stability and antifungal activity, and treatment resulted in a uniform and continuous coating on roots. The CW-GML and CW coatings both effectively reduced root weight loss and respiration rate and inhibited decay incidence compared with control roots during storage. The CW-GML coating showed markedly stronger inhibition of root rot than the CW coating. Both the CW-GML and CW coatings promoted an increase in root sweetness but did not negatively impact perceived flavor. The overall results demonstrate that the CW-GML coating holds great promise as an effective postharvest technology to preserve food quality and extend shelf life of sweet potato roots.

Penicillium expansum , a causal agent of blue mold rot, leads to substantial postharvest losses in the fruit industry. Due to environmental pollution and the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains, the use of synthetic chemical fungicides faces severe challenges. Natural antifungal compounds derived from plants are considered promising alternatives. In this study, the antifungal activities of coumarin and five hydroxylated derivatives against P. expansum and involved mechanisms were investigated. Among the six coumarins, 3-hydroxycoumarin (3-HC) demonstrated strong inhibitory effects on mycelial growth, germ tube elongation, conidiation, patulin production, and the best control effect on blue mold in apple and jujube fruit. Moreover, 3-HC increased the sensitivity of P. expansum to the cell wall, oxidative, and osmotic stresses . In silico analyses, including target fishing, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations, revealed that the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family in P. expansum (Pempks), were the potential targets of 3-HC. Bio-layer interferometry and ATP competition assays found that 3-HC could directly bind to PempkB and PempkC , and inhibit the MAPK activity. Our results suggested that 3-HC may act as an ATP-competitive MAPK inhibitor to affect the MAPK signaling pathway and inhibit the development and pathogenicity of P. expansum .

Mangoes are highly susceptible to post-harvest spoilage, leading to significant losses. This study aimed to optimize the encapsulation of lemongrass essential oil (LEO) using ultrasonic-assisted hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and response surface methodology (RSM). The ultrasonic-assisted inclusion complex (UIC) was characterized through various techniques including particle size analysis, SEM, UV–vis, FTIR, XRD, and TGA. The antibacterial activity of the UIC was evaluated, and its effectiveness in prolonging mango shelf life was assessed by monitoring parameters such as weight loss, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), malondialdehyde (MDA), vitamin C (VC) content, and external appearance. The results indicated that ultrasonic-assisted encapsulation significantly improved the encapsulation efficiency (EE), with optimal conditions of a core-wall ratio of 9:1, ultrasonic power of 150 W, and temperature of 36 °C. The UIC exhibited sustained release of LEO and enhanced antimicrobial activity, resulting in significant reductions in weight loss, firmness degradation, and metabolic changes during mango storage. Treated mangoes also showed improved appearance, with delayed onset of black spots and browning. These findings suggest that ultrasonic-assisted HP-β-CD encapsulation of LEO is an effective, eco-friendly strategy for postharvest preservation of mangoes, offering substantial potential for extending shelf life and maintaining fruit quality.

This work fabricated natamycin-loaded zein-casein nanoparticles (N-Z/C NPs) by a pH-driven approach and applied to control postharvest peach brown rot caused by Monilinia fructicola . When casein and phosphoric acid were used as a stabilizer and neutralizing acid, respectively, NPs with mean particle sizes < 100 nm and zeta-potentials < −30 mV could be obtained. The NPs could increase the aqueous dispersibility of natamycin and showed high stability against environmental changes, which could be attributed to both hydrophobic stacking and hydrogen bonds between natamycin and zein. Besides, the effects of N-Z/C NPs on the storage of peach were assessed in vitro and in vivo . Nanoencapsulation did not affect the antifungal activities of natamycin. The NPs with 20 and 80 µg/mL of natamycin could basically inhibit the spore germination and mycelial growth of M. fructicola , respectively. The N-Z/C NPs coatings exhibited better results than natamycin in controlling of peach brown rot.
