Corrosion-sensing and self-healing dual-function coating based on 1,10-phenanthroline loaded urea formaldehyde microcapsules for carbon steel protection

Jinke Wang,Yao Huang,Lingwei Ma,Xin Guo,Shanghao Wu,Chenhao Ren,Dawei Zhang

In this work, a smart coating with corrosion-sensing and self-healing dual functions was developed on carbon steel by incorporating the urea formaldehyde (UF) microcapsules loaded with 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) molecules. Phen as both the corrosion-sensing indicator and corrosion inhibitor was encapsulated into the UF microcapsules via the oil-water (O/W) emulsion in-situ polymerization method. When the coating was damaged, the Phen molecules released from UF/Phen microcapsules would react with the Fe 2+ ions generated from the active anodic corrosion site of the carbon steel substrate, and displayed a prominent red color chelate compound for corrosion-sensing application. During the neutral salt spray test, the corrosion evolution underneath the damaged coating can be rapidly detected within 15 min. Besides, the corrosion activity near the coating scratch can be effectively inhibited due to the adsorption of released Phen on the exposed substrate surface. After 72 h of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the low frequency impedance modulus of the scratched coating containing 10 wt% UF/Phen microcapsules was almost 7 times that of the scratched blank coating. The smart coating can not only achieve timely corrosion sensing, but also suppress the corrosion activity, which is of great importance for practical corrosion protection applications.

Multi-channel preparation and high-throughput screening of coating fillers with optimized corrosion sensing and inhibition properties for smart protective coatings

Jinke Wang,Lingwei Ma,Zhibin Chen,Yue Wang,Chenhao Ren,Tong Liu,Li Ma,Cunguo Lin,Dawei Zhang

A high-throughput method was proposed to screen coating fillers with both good corrosion-sensing and inhibition performances. SiO 2 nanoparticles loaded with different percentages of phenanthroline (Phen) and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (HDMIC) were prepared (Ph-HD@SN) using a multi-channel synthesis instrument. The corrosion-sensing ability of different Ph-HD@SN to detect Fe 2+ ions can be determined by spectrophotometric method within 30 s. The corrosion inhibition effect of Ph-HD@SN was evaluated by visual assessment and quantification of iron dissolution from carbon steel in NaCl solutions containing different nanoparticles . The optimized Ph-HD@SN was incorporated into epoxy coating to achieve the corrosion-sensing and self-healing properties.

Stimulus Responsive Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework to Achieve Corrosion Sensing and Active Protecting in Polymeric Coatings

Chengbao Liu,Bei Qian,Peimin Hou,Zuwei Song

Metal substrates beneath polymeric coatings are susceptible to localized corrosion, which could result in lifetime reduction and catastrophic failure without timely repair treatment. In situ detection of corrosion and repair coating defects are in high demand yet challenging to fulfill so far. Herein, we report a smart polymeric coating by integrating nanosensors into the coating matrix, which is capable of efficient corrosion sensing and active anticorrosion protecting. The nanosensors were constructed by zeolitic imidazolate framework encapsulated with the polyethylene glycol-tannic acid complex. The morphology, chemical constitution, and stimulus responsiveness of nanosensors were systematically analyzed. The generation of local corrosion beneath coating can be promptly sensed and reported by a conspicuous purple color derived from tannic-iron ion coordinates. Meanwhile, local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results proved that the metal degradation process at the defected interface can be largely inhibited, exhibiting active anticorrosion property. Furthermore, the constructed smart coating possessed superior impermeability and long-term protective performance under simulated seawater and harsh salts spray conditions. This feasible and effective strategy based on simple nanosensors to engineer smart coatings paves a new way to develop high environmental adaptability protective materials with protecting, corrosion sensing, and self-healing functions.

LDH-Based “Smart” Films for Corrosion Sensing and Protection

Xuejie Zhao,Yujie Yuan,Yuankun Wei,Zhe Zhang,You Zhang

In a “smart” corrosion-protective coating system, both the active anti-corrosion and the early corrosion detection of underlying metals are highly required. It is practical significant to develop materials that possess self-detecting of the early local corrosion and self-healing of coating defects simultaneously. The organic compound 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) is an effective inhibitor and a fluorescent sensor probe for corrosion of aluminum alloy. Therefore, a layer double hydroxide (LDH) nanocontainer film loaded with the 8HQ was developed for the active corrosion protection purpose of aluminum alloy AA2024. In corrosive environments, the 8HQ are released from LDH film to inhibit the corrosion process, leading to the loss of the complexation with Al3+ions in LDH laminates, thus turning off fluorescence. Results show that the LDH film loaded with 8HQ composites can improve the anti-corrosion performance of the film by releasing corrosion inhibitors on demand. Simultaneously, due to the complexation of 8HQ and Al3+ions, the LDH film is fluorescent at the initial stage under ultraviolet light, and then becomes non-fluorescent at the corrosion sites, indicating the corrosion evolution process of the coating. The 8HQ-loaded LDH film with self-healing and self-detecting dual functions provides promising opportunities for the effective corrosion protection of aluminum alloy due to its “smart” and multifunctional properties. Keywords:layered double hydroxide;8-hydroxyquinoline;films;corrosion sensing;corrosion inhibition;aluminum alloy

Self-healing and corrosion-sensing multifunctional coatings containing pH-sensitive TiO2-based composites

Yangyang Cao,Zheng Wang,Jieru Wan,Yuzhu He,Yunqiang Li,Sheng Wang,Yanli Wang,Dalei Song,Tao Zhang

Polyelectrolyte-encapsulated nanocontainers can effectively respond to changes of pH and thus control the on-demand release of corrosion inhibitors. A pH-responsive release system (Phen-Tpp@MTNs-PDDA) was developed based on the cationic polyelectrolyte poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDDA) encapsulated mesoporous TiO 2 nanocontainers (MTNs) loaded with 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) and tripolyphosphate ions (Tpp) corrosion inhibitors. The epoxy coating (EP) embedded with Phen-Tpp@MTNs-PDDA (Phen-Tpp@MTNs-PDDA/EP) demonstrates superior self-healing properties and confers long-term protection on the metal substrate through the cooperative effect of Phen and Tpp. Simultaneously, this hybrid coating is endowed with corrosion sensing capability based on the color development originating from the interaction of Phen and carbon steel. This self-healing and corrosion-sensing multifunctional coating provides an effective strategy for the corrosion protection of metals.

Corrosion Sensing and Visualizing Epoxy Coatings Enabled by Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Nanosensors

Chunying Xu,Chengbao Liu,Peimin Hou,Li Cheng

Coating microdamage and interfacial corrosion are inevitable for the metal/coating system during service, leading to the premature failure of the equipment and posing significant safety hazards. However, challenges remain regarding the achievement of early detection of corrosion and the visual monitoring of damage. Herein, a novel polymeric coating system exhibiting robust capabilities for corrosion sensing and visualization has been developed through the combination of meticulously designed nanosensors. These nanosensors were synthesized utilizing a zeolitic imidazolate framework that is infused with phenanthroline (Phen) corrosion probes. The onset of metal corrosion at the interface of coating damage can be promptly sensed and reflected by an apparent orange-red color, attributing to the formation of Phen-Fe 2+ coordinates. The impermeability and corrosion resistance of the epoxy coating have been greatly improved through introducing the synthesized nanosensors. This straightforward yet powerful strategy based on elaborate nanosensors, offering a new perspective for design of multifunctional and long-life protective materials.
