Preparing carbonated water-bio-heavy oil emulsions via membrane emulsification for efficient interphase mass transfer desalination

Wenbo Jiang,Yiwen Wei,Shilong Li,Chenye Dai,Can Yuan,Jian Lu,Dong Zou,Tianxiang Yu,Yuqing Sun,Wenheng Jing

Bio-heavy oil with high oxygen content and combustion calorific value has attracted lots of attention as a green and sustainable fuel to cope with the increasingly severe energy shortages. However, the high salt content limits its combustion utilization due to potential risks such as equipment corrosion and wear blockage. The traditional desalination method using sulfuric acid causes a large amount of wastewater, Herein, we propose an assisted metal-ion interphase mass transfer desalination strategy by preparing carbonated water-in-bio-heavy oil (CW/O) emulsions with continuous membrane emulsification. α-Al 2 O 3 membrane with an average pore size of 600 nm was selected as the emulsification medium. Saturated carbonic acid solutions as a dispersed phase were pressed through the membrane pores into bio-heavy oil to form uniform micron-sized CW/O emulsions. The prepared CW/O droplets provide a large interphase mass transfer interface which assists the hydrolysis of fatty acid salts of bio-heavy oil in the acidic environment and yields an efficient transfer of metal ions. As a result, the CW/O emulsion with an average droplet size (D 3,2 ) of 4.29 μm and a specific surface area of 139.63 m 2 /m 3 was prepared at a pressure of 0.5 MPa, achieving a salt removal efficiency of up to 85.62 %. This study provides a novel chemical-free and effective strategy for efficient oil product refining while utilizing CO 2 through the continuous preparation of micron-sized CW/O droplets with sufficient interphase mass transfer area.

Pore structure design of NFES PTFE membrane for membrane emulsification

Jinxue Cheng,Qinglin Huang,Yan Huang,Shiwen Yu,Changfa Xiao,Quan Hu

In this research, a novel poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane with regular geometric pore structure fabricated by near-field electrospinning (NFES) method was firstly utilized in the preparation of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion through membrane emulsification process. Effects of NFES PTFE membranes’ pore aspect ratio (length-width ratio of rectangle pore structure) on the water-in-oil droplet size, droplet size distribution, and uniformity of water-in-oil emulsion was investigated respectively. Results showed that the increase of pore aspect ratio would bring about a smaller water-in-oil droplet size. The average water-in-oil droplet size decreased from 234.9 nm (M-1) to 167.8 nm (M-4) when the pore aspect ratio increased from 1 to 4. Compared with conventional mechanical agitation, the water-in-oil emulsion formed by membrane emulsification process showed not only more uniform water-in-oil droplet size, but also higher long-term stability (remained homogeneous after 30 days). In addition to showing the excellent membrane emulsification performance in harsh environment, the NFES PTFE membrane also exhibited excellent water-in-oil emulsion separation performance. Compared with other NFES PTFE membranes, M-1 membrane showed the highest oil flux (33.4 L m -2  h -1 , -0.02 MPa) and water rejection rate (94.4%) in the separation of water-in-oil emulsion formed by membrane emulsification process.

Integrated membrane emulsification and solution cooling crystallization to obtain a narrow and predictable crystal size distribution

Soojin Kwon,Kiran Mathew Thomas,Richard Lakerveld

ABSTRACT Solution crystallization processes are challenged by the need to control crystal quality attributes such as the crystal size distribution (CSD). Emulsion crystallization is an attractive process intensification strategy to control crystal quality attributes through miniaturization. Droplets of an emulsion can act as tiny crystallizers by confining crystals so that crystal nucleation and growth are limited by the droplet size with available supersaturation. This work presents a novel process concept based on the integration of membrane emulsification and solution crystallization. A water-in-oil emulsion is created through membrane emulsification and glycine is crystallized inside droplets by cooling. The process is characterized in terms of the droplet size distribution, crystal number density, and CSD as a function of the emulsification method and supersaturation. Large and monodisperse droplets obtained from membrane emulsification can achieve a narrow and predictable CSD with higher productivity compared to a mechanical emulsification method. The crystal number density is strongly affected by the initial supersaturation when using membrane emulsification but not the final CSD. In contrast, the CSD changes with supersaturation when applying a mechanical emulsification method. The CSD obtained from a conventional bulk crystallization process is broader and lacks the control imposed by the uniform droplets from membrane emulsification.

Effect of parameters on ME process by near-field electrospun PTFE membrane

Jinxue Cheng,Naijia Zhao,Yan Huang,Changfa Xiao,Xiao Ma,Qinglin Huang

Background Membrane emulsification (ME) is an attractive membrane process to produce various kind of simple or multiple emulsions. The membrane utilized in ME process should have high dispersed phase flux, narrow pore size distribution and excellent antifouling property. Methods This work proposed a novel near-field electrospun (NFES) poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membranes with ordered rectangular pore geometry. Compared with other membranes, the order pore geometry of NFES PTFE membrane was helpful to obtain a more homogeneous and more stable water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. Significant findings The droplet size was simply controlled by the NFES PTFE membrane pore size. And NFES PTFE membrane was more conducive to the formation of droplets with narrow droplet size distribution because of its unique straight rectangular membrane pore geometry. In addition, W/O emulsion droplet size be regulated in coordination with operating parameters and phase parameters. Results indicated that a smaller rectangular pore area of PTFE membrane would lead to a smaller droplet size. Introducing of shear stress in the continuous phase was contributed to the generation of monodisperse droplets. When the emulsifier (Span 80) content was 1wt%, the smallest droplet size (∼103.6 nm) was obtained.

Fast electron migration for efficient sodium desulfurization by producing activated sodium metal microspheres with large reaction interfaces

Rongxin Zhu,Dongdong Yin,Xingwei Liu,Yuying Jiang,Feng Wang,Can Yuan,Wenbo Jiang,Jian Lu,Yuqing Sun,Yu Guo,Wenheng Jing

Achieving a highly efficient desulfurization of heavy feed oils using sodium metal remains challenging owing to its restricted reaction interface. Herein, membrane emulsification technology was adopted to produce monodisperse activated sodium metal (aNa) microspheres with considerably enhanced reaction interfaces for efficient desulfurization of benzothiophene (BT) without requiring a catalyst. By regulating membrane emulsification parameters, the molten sodium into the model oil using a membrane device, optimized aNa microspheres with a particle size of 27.71 μm and a large specific surface area of 2.17 × 10 5 m 2 ·m −3 , which was 50–100 times larger than that of microspheres prepared via mechanical agitation, were obtained. On the basis of the rich reaction interfaces, the efficient sodium desulfurization would proceed via Coulomb-like explosion initiated by aNa to form solvated electrons and cleavage of the C–S bond at one end to generate C + , which trigger the final cleavage of the C–S bond in BT under the continued attack of the fast C + electron cloud, together with the generation of styrene and sodium sulfide. With the assistance of hydrogenation, fast and efficient benzothiophene desulfurization was achieved with a desulfurization efficiency of > 90 % within 15 min under the optimized reaction conditions, i.e., reaction temperature, pressure, and Na/S ratio. This study provides a fast and efficient sulfur removal technology to replace conventional catalytic hydrodesulfurization.

Pore structure optimization of electrospun PTFE nanofiber membrane and its application in membrane emulsification

Shiwen Yu,Qinglin Huang,Jinxue Cheng,Yan Huang,Changfa Xiao

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanofiber membranes with a kind of novel circular pore structure were fabricated in our study. Firstly, PTFE/PVA spinning solution was electrospun into precursor nanofiber membrane, during which, poly(tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) aqueous dispersion was introduced by electrostatic spraying aiming to optimize the original fibrous network pore structure of electrospinning. After which, the prepared precursor nanofiber membranes were sintered, and PTFE nanofiber membranes were finally obtained. Effects of FEP contents on PTFE nanofiber membranes’ structure and performance were investigated, respectively. From the morphology observation, it was found that the PTFE nanofiber membrane’s pore structure gradually transformed from fibrous network to circular pore due to the melting of FEP resins. Owing to the excellent under-oil hydrophobicity and the uniform circular pore structure, the obtained PTFE nanofiber membranes were utilized in membrane emulsification (ME) process to prepared water in oil (W/O) emulsion. Compared with the conventional mechanical stirring method, the W/O emulsion prepared by ME process showed not only more uniform water droplet size (about 270 nm), but also more stable and higher production efficiency.

Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents based membrane emulsification-assisted liquid-phase microextraction method for determination of pyrethroids in tea beverages

Heng Qian,Qian Yang,Yuan Qu,Ziwei Ju,Wenfeng Zhou,Haixiang Gao

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were used as an extractant for the determination of pyrethroids  in environmental water and tea beverage samples. Three different acids were chosen as hydrogen bond donors for preparation of DESs, and decanoic acid was optimal because of its high recovery. Factors affecting relative recovery were optimized individually, including salt addition, surfactant addition, extraction temperature, DES amount, and sample volume etc. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the relative recovery of pyrethroids was from 89.3% to 97.7%, with relative standard deviation (RSD) values ranging from 1.75% to 2.73%. The linear correlation coefficient ranged from 0.9981 to 0.9992, and the linear range was between 1.9 and 500 μg/L. Based on a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 3:1, the limit of detection (LOD) values were 0.56 to 1.24 μg/L. The enrichment factor ranged from 92 to 105. In conclusion, good extraction efficiency was achieved in tea beverage samples under the optimized conditions.

Generation of Monodisperse Submicron Water-in-Diesel Emulsions via a Hydrophobic MXene-Modified Ceramic Membrane

Huihui Huang,Yuqing Sun,Lele Cui,Yingxiang Ni,Shilong Li,Weihong Xing,Wenheng Jing

Ceramic membranes for emulsification are generally fabricated by particle stacking. As a result, their small adjacent pore distances and hydrophilicity cause water droplets to coalesce when preparing monodisperse submicron water-in-diesel (W/D) emulsions. Here, we present a two dimensional-modified membrane emulsification model for the first time, with the development of a hydrophobic MXene-modified ceramic membrane with a water contact angle of 144.7 ± 1.2°. Benefiting from their large lateral size, MXene nanomaterials not only increase the distance between channels but also provide longitudinal-lateral transport pathways for dispersed phases. Therefore, the dispersed phase droplets can roll along the interlayer nanochannels of the MXene-modified membrane before converging with the continuous phase, thereby preventing the coalescence of emulsions. The MXene-modified membrane presents an excellent emulsification ability for preparing W/D emulsions, and the resulting diesel emulsions are at a submicron level with a unimodal distribution, an average particle size of 400 nm, and a particle size distribution coefficient of 0.7. This novel MXene-modified membrane for emulsification is of great significance since it provides a simple and promising strategy for the development of monodisperse nano or submicron emulsions.

Effects of membrane pore activation on microporous membrane emulsification process and emulsion droplet formation

Hu Yuning,Gong Fangling,Yan Xingran,Li Tong,Chen Jingkun,Wei Wei,Ma Guanghui

The low percentage of pores at which droplets are formed results in lower production efficiency, which is one of the main issues hampering the application of microporous membrane emulsification on a large scale. The effect of microporous membrane pore activation on the droplet’s formation and emulsion performance was systemically investigated by changing both transmembrane pressures and membrane wettability during membrane emulsification. It indicated that the high transmembrane pressure increased the pore activation ratio (the percentage of pores at which droplets are formed) by the growing flux. These induced the enhancements of emulsification efficiency and the degradation of emulsion performance. Different wettability of membrane inflow and outflow influenced the pore activation speed (the speed which droplets are formed at pores). It indicated that the wettability of membrane outflow had a key effect on droplet formation and the high pore activation speed avoided splashing for high emulsion performance.

Facile preparation of PMMA@PLA core-shell microspheres by PTFE membrane emulsification

Jinxue Cheng,Naijia Zhao,Yuxin Zhang,Yan Huang,Qinglin Huang,Changfa Xiao

Uniform-sized core-shell microspheres have received more and more attentions owing to the therapeutic application such as controlled release and drug targeting. In this work, we proposed a facile method to fabricate core-shell microspheres with uniform size. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)@polylactic acid (PLA) core-shell microspheres with controllable core and shell size were prepared by combining membrane emulsification (ME) technology and solvent evaporation method. Specially, the near-field electrospinning (NFES) poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membranes and biaxially stretched PTFE membranes were utilized in the ME process. Subsequently, a series of PMMA@PLA core-shell microspheres were successfully prepared, where the core size of microspheres depended on the hydrophobic NFES PTFE membrane while the shell size depended on the hydrophilic biaxially stretched PTFE membrane. Meanwhile, the variation of droplet size and distribution with the evaporation temperature, pressure and continuous phase rotating speed were also investigated. When the solvent evaporation temperature was 40 °C, the obtained PMMA@PLA core-shell microspheres showed optimal morphology and size distribution. Moreover, the shell size increased with the increase of operating pressure and the decrease of continuous phase rotating speed. This facile strategy showed great potential for efficiently preparing uniform-sized core-shell microspheres in large scale.

Preparation of colon-targeted alginate microspheres loaded with the honokiol-doxorubicin conjugate and their therapeutic effect on colon cancer

Limei Zhang,Huatai Zhu,Peng Ye,Yuting Ren,Hongyu Wang,Jiandu Lei,Jing He

Combining drug delivery technologies with chemotherapeutic drugs is very attractive in terms of enhancing antitumor efficacy and reducing toxicity. Alginate microspheres stand out in the field of drug delivery due to their biocompatibility and high conversion rate. However, there are certain drawbacks in their preparation technology and further research is needed on how to prepare alginate microspheres with uniform particle size using high-viscosity sodium alginate solution. Therefore, this study proposed a novel microfluidic membrane emulsification technique for the preparation of alginate microspheres from high-viscosity sodium alginate solution. A tumor microenvironment-responsive colorectal cancer-targeted oral drug delivery system was constructed using a disulfide-bonded coupling of honokiol and doxorubicin as a model drug to achieve precise targeting, efficiency enhancement and toxicity reduction. The results showed that the prepared microspheres were relatively homogeneous in particle size. The in vitro model showed the high stability of the microspheres in the gastric acid environment and the colon-targeted release characteristic. And the system triggered the breakage of redox bonds and the precise release of the drug, showing good antitumor activity. This study contributes to the construction of drug delivery systems and the study of colon cancer treatment, which has a promising application.

Determination of four pyrethroid insecticides in water samples through membrane emulsification-assisted liquid–liquid microextraction based on solidification of floating organic droplets

Heng Qian,Lu Hu,Chaoran Liu,Huazi Wang,Haixiang Gao,Wenfeng Zhou

A novel membrane emulsification-assisted liquid–liquid microextraction method based on the solidification of floating organic drops was used to detect four pyrethroid pesticides (deltamethrin, etofenprox, fenpropathrin, and bifenthrin). In this method, [P 44412 ]Br was used as a surfactant that could be removed from water via the addition of KPF 6 . The extraction solvent was separated after centrifugation and solidification on the water surface. The parameters affecting the recovery of the target compounds, including the surfactant amount, [P 44412 ]Br-to-KPF 6 molar ratio, addition of salt, extraction solvent volume, and temperature, were individually optimized and further analyzed through an orthogonal array design (OAD) experiment. The optimized conditions were based on the results of the OAD experiment and single-factor analysis. Using these experimental conditions, the recovery of the four pyrethroids ranged from 91.3% to 98.1% with relative standard deviation (RSD) values ranging from 1.7 to 2.2%. Good linearity was observed, with values from 0.9982 to 0.9997, and the linear range was between 1 and 500   μg/L (5–500   μg/L for fenpropathrin). The limit of detection (LOD) values based on a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 3:1 were 0.37–0.75   μg/L. The enrichment factor ranged from 90 to 96. Therefore, this method is suitable for the determination of pyrethroid pesticides in environmental water samples.
