Breakup Characteristics of Water-in-Oil Emulsion Droplets Influenced by a Rigid Interfacial Film in the Presence of a Polymer Surfactant

Jingjing Gao,Xiaobin Xu,Tao Li,Hongyu Zhang,Jun Xu,Fahai Cao

The emulsified feedstock technique derived from micro-explosion has been applied to improve the feedstock atomization of heavy oil during the catalytic cracking process. The strength of an interfacial film, which is vital for the stability of emulsion, can be enhanced by some polymer surfactants. In this study, n-hexadecane was chosen as the model oil. The effect of oil–water interfacial film properties on the high-temperature breakup of emulsified droplets was investigated, especially the interfacial film strength of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion in the presence of a commonly used non-ionic surfactant and/or polymer surfactant (Arlacel-P135). The mean diameter of dispersed water and interfacial tension and interfacial film strength of emulsions were measured. Afterward, two breakup modes of emulsified droplets were revealed by the single droplet heating test, which are “micro-explosion” and “breakup after bubble expansion”. The emulsified droplet stabilized by Arlacel-P135 is more prone to “breakup after bubble expansion” for the rigid oil–water interfacial film hindering the coalescence of dispersed water. The stability and oil–water interfacial strength of emulsions stabilized by mixed surfactants consisting of Span80, Tween80, and Arlacel-P135 were enhanced with the increase in Arlacel-P135 dosage. Moreover, the addition of Arlacel-P135 (0.2–0.5 wt %) significantly reduced the average breakup delay time (τ) of W/O droplets, since the bubble nucleation was favored by the interfacial film structure formed by polymer surfactant.

Stability Dynamic Characteristic of Oil-in-Water Emulsion from Alkali–Surfactant–Polymer Flooding

Chunhong Nie,Guoqiang Han,Jiawen Ni,Shuxia Guan,Huan Du,Yupeng Zhang,Heting Wang

The relationship model between the droplet lifetime and interface properties is established to characterize the stability of oil droplets, and then, the influence of the alkali–surfactant–polymer (ASP) concentration on the lifetime is analyzed by theoretical calculations. The stability dynamic characteristics of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions from ASP flooding were evaluated using the emulsion stability model (Civan model) based on two-phase separation. The effect of ASP on dynamic characteristics of the emulsion was explored by analyzing film strength qualitatively and measuring interfacial tension and ζ potential. The results showed that the Civan model was suitable to evaluate the stability of the O/W emulsion and to obtain the corresponding dynamic characteristics. The O/W emulsions became more stable with the increasing alkali concentration first at a low alkali concentration (cNaOH < 200 mg/L) and then became less stable with the increasing alkali concentration at a high alkali concentration (cNaOH > 200 mg/L). The stabilities of O/W emulsions were improved with the increasing concentrations of the surfactant and polymer. The mechanism of stabilization of the O/W emulsion by ASP is as follows. The surface-active substances formed by the reaction of alkali and acidic substances in the oil phase, together with surfactants, adsorb at the oil–water interface, reducing the interfacial tension and increasing the strength of the oil–water interface film. The polymer only increases the strength of the interface film by increasing the viscoelasticity of the oil–water interface film.

Impact of melting point of palm oil on mechanical and water barrier properties of gelatin-palm oil emulsion film

Jingdong Xiao,Wenhang Wang,Kun Wang,Yaowei Liu,Anjun Liu,Shaojing Zhang,Yana Zhao

In order to explore the effects of oil's melting points on film performance, a gelatin emulsion film with different degrees (8°, 18°, 24°, 33° and 44°, referring to different melting points) of commercial palm oils were fabricated and its properties were investigated. A variety of size distribution (d 4,3 and d 3,2 ) of oil droplets in film-forming emulsion was observed, with 24° oil being the smallest and most regular. As expected, the addition of palm oil obviously decreased film strength but increased elongation, depending upon oil degree. Among them, more importantly, strength of the film containing 24° palm oil was close to that of the pure gelatin film, coexisting with a satisfied elongation value. Furthermore, reducing water vapor permeability was observed in all emulsion films, wherein film containing 24° oil was lowest. Increasing degrees of palm oil led to an increase in film's opacity and a variation of film color, as well as thermal stability. The aforementioned different effects were consistent with microstructure of the emulsion films, where the film with 24° oil droplets was smoother and compact. In conclusion, the melting point of palm oil had a remarkable influence on properties of the resulting emulsion film, mainly being attributed to the differences in size and related state of oil droplets in emulsion during film processing.

A wireless battery-free eye modulation patch for high myopia therapy

Zhong Tianyan,Yi Hangjin,Gou Jiacheng,Li Jie,Liu Miao,Gao Xing,Chen Sizhu,Guan Hongye,Liang Shan,He Qianxiong,Lin Rui,Long Zhihe,Wang Yue,Shi Chuang,Zhan Yang,Zhang Yan,Xing Lili,Zhong Jie,Xue Xinyu

The proper axial length of the eye is crucial for achieving emmetropia. In this study, we present a wireless battery-free eye modulation patch designed to correct high myopia and prevent relapse. The patch consists of piezoelectric transducers, an electrochemical micro-actuator, a drug microneedle array, μ-LEDs, a flexible circuit, and biocompatible encapsulation. The system can be wirelessly powered and controlled using external ultrasound. The electrochemical micro-actuator plays a key role in precisely shortening the axial length by driving the posterior sclera inward. This ensures accurate scene imaging on the retina for myopia eye. The drug microneedle array delivers riboflavin to the posterior sclera, and μ-LEDs’ blue light induces collagen cross-linking, reinforcing sclera strength. In vivo experiments demonstrate that the patch successfully reduces the rabbit eye’s axial length by ~1217 μm and increases sclera strength by 387%. The system operates effectively within the body without the need for batteries. Here, we show that the patch offers a promising avenue for clinically treating high myopia.
