Permeability and Stability of Hydrophobic Tubular Ceramic Membrane Contactor for CO2 Desorption from MEA Solution

Yunzhao Guo,Wenbo Qi,Kaiyun Fu,Xianfu Chen,Minghui Qiu,Yiqun Fan

Ceramic membrane contactors hold great promise for CO2desorption due to their high mass transfer area as well as the favorable characteristics of ceramic materials to resist harsh operating conditions. In this work, a hydrophobic tubular asymmetric alpha-alumina (α-Al2O3) membrane was prepared by grafting a hexadecyltrimethoxysilane ethanol solution. The hydrophobicity and permeability of the membrane were evaluated in terms of water contact angle and nitrogen (N2) flux. The hydrophobic membrane had a water contact angle of ~132° and N2flux of 0.967 × 10−5mol/(m2∙s∙Pa). CO2desorption from the aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA) solution was conducted through the hydrophobic tubular ceramic membrane contactor. The effects of operating conditions, such as CO2loading, liquid flow rate, liquid temperature and permeate side pressure, on CO2desorption flux were investigated. Moreover, the stability of the membrane was evaluated after the immersion of the ceramic membrane in an MEA solution at 373 K for 30 days. It was found that the hydrophobic α-Al2O3membrane had good stability for CO2desorption from the MEA solution, resulting in a <10% reduction of N2flux compared to the membrane without MEA immersion. Keywords:membrane contactor;carbon dioxide;desorption;ceramic membrane

SiC foam with a hollow skeleton and microporous strut wall used as a membrane contactor for the liquid-liquid extraction of Ce3+ and Pr3+

Ye Zhang,Yong Gao,Peng Wang,Yichen Xu,Zhenming Yang,Jinsong Zhang

Membrane contactors have received considerable attention for extraction due to non-dispersive mass transfer through porous membranes. The past decades have seen the rapid development of organic hollow fiber membrane contactors, but very few studies have explored the applications of inorganic membranes in extraction, possibly due to their high costs. In this work, a novel SiC foam material with a hollow skeleton and microporous strut wall was used as a ceramic membrane contactor (HS-FCMC) for rare earths extraction. The foam's structure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The flow and concentration fields inside and outside the foam cell were simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and the mass transfer through the ceramic membrane was analyzed. Based on the nitric acid–Ce 3+ /Pr 3+ –P507–kerosene chemical system, the extraction efficiency of Pr 3+ and Ce 3+ using the HS-FCMC reached 96.13% and 92.86%, respectively. A comparison study with poly tetra fluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fibers was also conducted. The results indicate that the HS-FCMC is suitable for rare earths extraction due to the multiscale porous structure and chemical stability of the hollow-skeleton SiC foam. This research advances the knowledge of inorganic membrane extraction methods.

Electrospinning in membrane contactor: manufacturing Elec-PVDF/SiO2 superhydrophobic surface for efficient flue gas desulphurization applications

Qingping Xin,Kaiqiang Xie,Qingqing Liang,Xu Li,Yinan Zeng,Yuhang Zhao,Lei Zhang,Shaofei Wang,Hong Li,Yuzhong Zhang

In membrane contactors, maintaining a high SO 2 absorption flux and an excellent wetting resistance are crucial for hazardous gas removal. In this study, we adopted an electrospinning strategy to fabricate highly robust superhydrophobic dual-layer Elec-PVDF/SiO 2 composite membrane contactors used for flue gas desulfurization. The composite membrane contactor consisted of a durable and ultrathin three-dimensional (3D) superhydrophobic surface and a porous supporting layer, where the formulation was optimized by regulating the PVDF concentration, solvent ratio and SiO 2 particles content in electrospinning solution. The scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), EDS-mapping, water contact angle (WCA) and surface roughness of as-prepared Elec-PVDF/SiO 2 composite membrane contactors were conducted to explore the physical and chemical structure. The SiO 2 nanoparticles were uniformly loaded in Elec-PVDF/SiO 2 composite membrane contactor, and constructed micro-nano dual-coarse lotus-leaf-like morphology, which noticeably elevated surface roughness ( R a ). The SiO 2 nanoparticles also functioned as hydrophobic modifiers, which boosted the WAC up to 155°. The SO 2 absorption fluxes and SO 2 removal efficiencies were investigated. In particular, the membrane contactor doped with 20 wt% SiO 2 nanoparticles significantly elevated the stability of desulfurization performance. Besides, the membrane mass transfer coefficient ( K m ) and corresponding membrane mass transfer resistance ( H / K m ) were explored.

Enhanced carbon dioxide capture via amphiphobic PVDF membrane modification for membrane contactors: Overcoming wettability challenges

Chang Li,Yanbin Yun,Fengguang Huang,Jiaming Mao,Jia Liu,Wenjuan Yang,Chunyun Zhou,Meng Li

The membrane contact absorption method is a promising technology for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture, enhancing absorption efficiency and mitigating aerosol emissions. However, membrane wetting, an inevitable issue during the membrane contact absorption process, leads to a rapid decline in absorption rates, thereby limiting the development of this methodology. Focusing on the tendency of organic absorbents to induce membrane wetting, this study reports a novel modification method for amphiphobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes. This method leverages polydopamine nanoparticles (PDANPs) to construct stable multi-level reentrant structures on the membrane surface, which are further enhanced for their hydrophobic properties through surface fluorination. The resultant amphiphobic membrane exhibits exceptional resistance to both water and organic wetting, with a water contact angle as high as 152.82° and contact angles above 90° for various organic absorbents. Long-term experiments demonstrate that the membrane material prepared by this method facilitates the stable and long-running operation of membrane contactors. Based on these findings, we analyze the structure–property relationship between the membrane surface microstructure and its amphiphobic performance. In conclusion, the fluorinated polydopamine hierarchical structure effectively resists membrane wetting induced by CO 2 absorbents, contributing to the promotion and application of CO 2 membrane absorption technology

Selective separation of copper and nickel by membrane extraction using hydrophilic nanoporous ion-exchange barrier membranes

Jianfeng Song,Xuhong Niu,Xue-Mei Li,Tao He

Hydrophilic nanoporous ion exchange barrier membrane, based on polyethersulfone (PES)/sulfonated polyphenylether sulfone ketone (SPPESK), was utilized for the pH dependent separation of copper and nickel ions with a commercial extractant, LIX84-I. The extraction and stripping performance of the membrane was demonstrated in a single stage membrane contactor as well as in an integrated extraction/stripping system. By adjusting the feed pH to 2.9, a complete separation of copper and nickel was achieved using the membrane contactors, where a copper flux of 1.10   ×   10 −8   mol/cm 2   s was observed. In an extraction/stripping integrated sandwiched membrane extraction contactor, significantly higher copper flux was observed due to the coupling of copper stripping. In addition, the PES/SPPESK barrier membrane prevented the loss of the organic extractant, exhibiting high stability in 30 days dynamic test. The results indicated that the membrane extraction contactor system is of great potential for selective extraction of metal ions.

Hybrid model as an efficient predictor of mass transfer behavior in hollow fiber membrane contactors with complex geometries

Yihan Yin,Hongxia Gao,Zhiwu Liang

Hollow fiber membrane contactors coupling amine absorption method have emerged as an ideal choice for carbon capture due to their high specific surface area, low cost, and ease of scalability. In this study, COMSOL Multiphysics 6.0 software was used to develop three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) models to investigate the CO 2 mass transfer performance of N-Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) + Piperazine (PZ) and 3-Dimethylamino-1-propanol (3DMA1P) + 2-(Methylamino)ethanol (MAE) blended solutions under various operating conditions, and the simulation results were evaluated with the experimental data. The results indicate that the outcomes obtained from the 2D model are generally higher than the experimental data, whereas the results from the 3D model show good agreement with the experimental data. Considering the stringent convergence conditions, low computational efficiency, and the inability of 3D models to dynamically describe the changes in mass transfer performance under membrane wetting conditions, a 2D-3D hybrid model was developed, making it possible to efficiently compute mass transfer performance during the dynamic membrane wetting process. The hybrid model was developed by quantifying the uneven fluid distribution from the 3D model into correction factors for both the gas and liquid phases, and incorporating these factors into the original 2D model. By comparing the simulation results of the hybrid model with experimental data, it is found that the non-wetting hybrid model for the MDEA + PZ blended solution exhibits strong agreement with experiments, achieving an absolute average relative deviation (AARD) within 4.95 %. Meanwhile, for the 3DMA1P + MAE mixed solution, the 5 % wetted hybrid model accurately predicts mass transfer performance with an AARD of less than 5.55 %. Moreover, the results obtained from the hybrid model are consistent with those from the 3D model, while significantly reducing the calculation time from over 3 h to less than 1 h. This demonstrates that the hybrid model can efficiently and accurately predict CO 2 absorption flux (J CO2 ) and membrane wetting under various operating conditions.

An experimental study on synthesis of glycolic acid via carbonylation of formaldehyde using PTFE membrane contactor

Zhihao Zhu,Guodong Kang,Ying Sun,Sha Yu,Meng Li,Jie Xu,Yiming Cao

The batch and continuous synthesis of glycolic acid via carbonylation of formaldehyde using high-temperature and high-pressure poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane contactor was demonstrated in this paper. The experiments in conventional stirred tank reactor were also conducted for comparison. The results showed that the yield of glycolic acid was significantly improved in membrane contactor system compared to the stirred tank reactor. At reaction temperature of 120 °C and reaction pressure of 5.0 MPa, the yield of glycolic acid was higher than 90% when the reaction time was 1 h, while it was only about 45% in the conventional stirred tank reactor. The enhancement of yield was due to the improvement of mass transfer or dispersion of CO in membrane contactor system, which could provide larger gas-liquid contact area and shorter mass transfer distance. The stability of PTFE hollow fibre membranes was also investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), liquid entry pressure (LEP), bubble point (BP) and contact angle (CA) measurements. The characterizations indicated that PTFE membranes exhibited good chemical and thermal stability in this reaction system. This study provided new idea and reference for the carbonylation of formaldehyde and similar gas-liquid reactions.

Effect of polytetrafluoroethylene hollow fiber microstructure on formaldehyde carbonylation performance in membrane contactor

Zhihao Zhu,Ying Sun,Haijun Yu,Meng Li,Xingming Jie,Guodong Kang,Yiming Cao

Membrane contactor is regarded as a promising method for reaction and process intensification. The feasibility of formaldehyde carbonylation to synthesize glycolic acid using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane contactor has been proved in our previous study. In this paper, the effect of membrane microstructure on process performance was further investigated. Three porous PTFE hollow fibers with different pore sizes and one polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/PTFE composite membrane with dense layer were fabricated for comparison. The physical and chemical properties of four membranes, including chemical composition, morphology, contact angle, liquid entry pressure, thermodynamic analysis and gas permeability, were systemically characterized. Experiments of formaldehyde carbonylation under different reaction conditions were conducted. The results indicated that the yield of glycolic acid increased with decreasing pore size for porous membranes, which was due to the improvement of wetting behavior. The dense layer of PDMS in composite hollow fiber could effectively prevent the solvent from entering membrane pores, thus the membrane exhibited the best performance. At reaction temperature of 120 °C and operation pressure of 3.0 MPa, the yield of glycolic acid was always higher than 90% as the mass ratio of trioxane and phosphotungstic acid increased from 0.2:1 to 0.8:1. The highest turnover frequency was up to 26.37 mol⋅g −1 ⋅h −1 . This study provided a reference for the understanding and optimization of membrane contactors for the synthesis of glycolic acid using solvent with low surface tension.

CO2 capture based on Al2O3 ceramic membrane with hydrophobic modification

Hongming Fu,Kaili Xue,Jihao Yang,Zhaohao Li,Heng Zhang,Dan Gao,Haiping Chen

In this paper, Al 2 O 3 ceramic membrane is modified to hydrophobicity by grafting 1 H,1 H,2 H,2 H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane. And its properties are characterized in detail. CO 2 capture performance of ceramic membrane is investigated by experiments. Results show that wetting resistance after modification is significantly improved, and contact angle increases from the initial 49.8–130.9°. However, hydrophobic modification has no significant effect on the crystalline phase, surface morphology and pore size distribution of the ceramic membrane. With ethanolamine (MEA) as absorbent, CO 2 mass transfer rate and capture efficiency using modified hydrophobic ceramic membrane are 46.6 × 10 −3 mol/(m 2 ·s) and 98.0%, showing significantly increase compared to the original membrane. After 72 h immersion in MEA solution, quality of ceramic membrane does not change significantly. And there is almost no change in average pore size. We believe this study will provide a reference for the industrial application for CO 2 capture by gas-liquid membrane contactor with ceramic membrane.

Integration of membrane contactors and catalytic solvent regeneration for efficient carbon dioxide capture

Kaili Xue,Guoxiong Zhan,Xiaona Wu,Heng Zhang,Zhen Chen,Haiping Chen,Junhua Li

To develop an energy-efficient and available carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture technique with amine-based solvents and membrane contactors (MCs), an innovative technological route was proposed to remove CO 2 from industrial flue gas by coupling MCs with catalyst-aided solvent regeneration (MC-CR). A laboratory-scale experimental setup with ceramic membrane module was then designed and built to accurately estimate the performance of the MC-CR route, using aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA) and powder metatitanic acid [TiO(OH) 2 ] as the solvent and catalyst, respectively. The results indicated that the nanofluid effect of the catalyst reduced the mass transfer resistance and promoted a concentration change in the liquid film , resulting in a high CO 2 absorption rate. The surface acidic sites of TiO(OH) 2 boosted the process of proton transfer in the solvent, thus facilitating the decomposition of carbamate. The CO 2 capture efficiency increased by 9.48% and the energy consumption of solvent regeneration considerably decreased by 40.8% at dosage of 2 wt% TiO(OH) 2 . In addition, matched pressure regulation for gas–liquid flow in the MCs effectively avoided membrane fouling and wetting after 180 min continuous operation. Industrial-scale simulation indicated that the MC-CR route achieved a low capture cost at $46.7/t CO 2 , a decrease of 28% compared with the cost of the traditional route. This study established the groundwork for developing MC technology as an effective approach for low-cost industrial CO 2 capture.

CO2/N2 separation using a ceramic membrane contactor and ZIF-8 in [TEPA][MIm]

Zhaohao Li,Tianjing An,Jiaxi Yang,Dan Gao,Hongyuan Zhang,Heng Zhang

Capturing CO 2 from the flue gas in the power plant is an important measure to realize the low-carbon combustion of the fossil energy. This paper presents a novel technique which combines traditional methods of the chemical absorption, the physical adsorption and the membrane absorption. The ionic liquid ([TEPA][MIm]) is utilized to improve the CO 2 absorption performance and reduce the energy consumption. While the porous skeleton (ZIF-8) is added to the ionic liquid to reduce the viscosity while introducing the physical adsorption. Moreover, the hydrophobic ceramic membrane is utilized as the separation interface between the gas phase and the liquid phase, which can avoid the entrainment and overflow of the liquid phase while increasing the specific surface area. In terms of the material preparation and the characterization, the addition of ZIF-8 does not destroy the original chemical composition of [TEPA][MIm]. The average contact angle of the hydrophobic ceramic membrane is 140.55°, and the failure temperature is greater than 400 K, which conforms to the application situation of the power plant. In terms of the CO 2 capture and the desorption performance, the maximum CO 2 capture amount reaches 2.03 mol/mol. The temperature of complete desorption is 70 °C. Furthermore, the capture performance after five cycles can reach 80 % of the initial performance. The performance is better than that of the CO 2 capture technology utilizing the traditional monoethanolamine solution.

Enhancing CO2 capture performance by changing membrane fiber arrangement in multi-fiber membrane contactors

Yihan Yin,Qi Liu,Min Xiao,Hongxia Gao,Bo Jin,Zhiwu Liang

Membrane absorption has garnered significant attention due to its ability to combine the advantages of membrane separation and chemical absorption methods. During the scale-up of membrane absorption equipment, the fluid flow and mass transfer processes tend to have serious non-ideal effects, arising from the increase in aspect ratio and the number of membrane fibers. However, traditional one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) models are unable to describe the impact of geometry on mass transfer performance. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) steady-state model is established to simulate the mass transfer process in a multi-fiber membrane contactor using COMSOL Multiphysics software. The 3D steady-state model is proven to be able to accurately predict the CO 2 absorption flux (J CO2 ) under various operating conditions by comparing the simulation results with experimental data. The results indicate a strong correlation between mass transfer performance and fluid velocity distribution. To further explore the flow behavior of gas and liquid at different locations, a 3D dynamic simulation model is developed and compared with experimental data. This model can describe the non-ideal flow behavior and the characteristics of gas and liquid phases in reactors with complex geometries. The results of the 3D dynamic model show that there are priority and slow regions for fluid flow, and CO 2 mass transfer performance can be enhanced by concentrating the membrane fiber arrangement in the priority region. The model developed in this study can be used to evaluate defects in fluid flow patterns, such as channeling, back mixing, and tailing. Furthermore, the 3D steady-state and dynamic models can guide the design of membrane contactors, optimize operating conditions, and provide a reference for analyzing fluid flow morphology and structural optimization in membrane contactors.
