Cordierite-bonded porous SiC membrane supports with diatomite as silicon source were prepared in air at 1150–1400 °C via reaction bonding technique. The phase composition, microstructure, flexural strength , open porosity, pore size distribution as well as dielectric properties of membrane supports were investigated as a function of the mass ratio of different starting materials, sintering temperature , graphite content and holding time. It was found that the diatomite addition strongly promoted the phase transformation towards cordierite, meanwhile, due to the enhancement of necks at the contacting pionts growth by the additions of diatomite (5.17 wt%), a high three-point flexural strength of 49.19 MPa was achieved at an open porosity of 37.72% sintered at 1250 °C for 3 h. Meanwhile, the cordierite structure can incorporate of diatomite (like Fe 2 O 3 ) by solid solution formation, which can highly enhance on the electrical properties of cordierite-bonded SiC porous ceramics .

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membrane supports, as critical components of ceramic membrane filters, must exhibit outstanding performance in mechanical properties, porosity, and chemical stability. In this study, MoO₃ was employed as a sintering aid, with SiC and α-Al₂O₃ serving as raw materials and walnut shell powder as a pore-forming agent. The effects of varying sintering temperatures (1250–1400°C) and MoO₃ contents on the properties of SiC porous ceramic membrane supports were systematically investigated. Special emphasis was placed on elucidating the mechanisms by which MoO₃ addition influences porosity, flexural strength, pore size distribution, and chemical stability. Experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of MoO₃ facilitates low-temperature sintering of SiC supports through a dissolution-precipitation mechanism. This process promotes the formation of mullite whiskers that reinforce interparticle necking regions while enhancing the uniformity of neck connections. Optimal performance was achieved at 1350°C with 8 wt% MoO₃ addition, yielding a bending strength of 37.01 ± 1.72 MPa, average pore size of 1.735 μm, most probable pore size of 1.7 μm, open porosity of 39.12 %, and exceptional corrosion resistance. This work establishes both theoretical foundations and practical strategies for low-temperature fabrication of high-performance SiC porous ceramics, while expanding the application potential of molybdenum-based sintering aids in structure-function integrated ceramic materials.

An efficient and reusable catalyst was developed by depositing palladium nanoparticles on an amine-functionalized ceramic membrane support using a nanoparticulate colloidal impregnation method. The as-prepared Pdloaded ceramic membrane support was characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM, XPS, ICP, and its catalytic properties were investigated in the liquid-phase p -nitrophenol hydrogenation. A comparative study was also made with the palladium nanoparticles deposited on an amine-functionalized ceramic membrane support by an impregnation-reduction method. The palladium nanoparticles could be homogeneously immobilized on the ceramic membrane support surface, and exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the p -nitrophenol hydrogenation. The catalytic activity of the Pdloaded ceramic membrane support prepared by the nanoparticulate colloidal impregnation method increased by 16.6% compared to that of impregnation-reduction method. In the nanoparticulate colloidal impregnation method, palladium nanoparticles were presynthesized, higher loading of Pd(0) could be obtained, resulting in better catalytic activity. The as-prepared Pd-loaded ceramic membrane support could be easily reused for several cycles without appreciable degradation of catalytic activity.

In this study, in-situ growth of columnar mullite reinforced silicon carbide porous membrane supports were prepared, and the addition of TiO 2 helped to reduce the sintering temperature for the anisotropic growth of necked columnar mullite crystals. The synthesis of in situ columnar mullite makes reasonable use of the oxidized silica of silicon carbide, and in turn reduces the loss of the silicon carbide porous membrane support under strong corrosive conditions. The material showed a flexural strength of up to 72.95 MPa, and a water flux of 31612.83 L·m -2 ·h -1 ·bar -1 when sintered for 2 h in an air environment at 1250 °C. The flexural strength after corrosion in 20 vol% H 2 SO 4 and 1 wt% NaOH solution (90 °C) exceeded 93%. This shows that this porous silicon carbide ceramic membrane scaffold has potential applications in the field of water treatment under harsh environments.

Pore formers are essential for preparation of high performance ceramic membrane supports. The removal of the pore former is a key process affecting the sintering rate and quality. To avoid excessive concentration of pore former removal at a certain temperature, we choose carbon black, sawdust and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) as a composite pore former to prepare supports with high flux and sinter the supports rapidly. According to thermal analysis results of the three pore formers, we designed the ratio of sawdust/carbon black/HEC as 5/3/2. By tuning the firing temperature, pore former content and heating rate, the supports prepared with this method exhibited a pure water flux of 45.4 m 3 m −2 h −1 bar −1 and a bending strength of 46.2 MPa. The properties are highly dependent on the pore former content and slightly on the heating rate, which means that the composite pore former method can greatly reduce the time consumption without damage to the support quality. The corrosion experimental results also indicate the supports are quite resistant to strong acid and alkali corrosion. In summary, the composite pore former method is a promising way to fabricate supports with excellent performances and realize the fast firing of high porosity ceramic membrane supports.

Novel light and strong hierarchical porous mullite-bonded SiC structures with total porosity ranging from 68 % to 95 % were fabricated by combining material extrusion (MEX) and in-situ reaction bonding technique. These structures comprise three porosity families and wide porosity hierarchization over four orders of magnitude in length scales. The pore parameters were precisely controlled by the nozzle path and starch (as a poreforming agent) content. The sintering temperature effect on phase composition, porosity, sintering shrinkage, and mechanical properties was systematically investigated. As the SiC powders were sintered at 1550 °C, they were compactly bonded by mullite and cristobalite necks. The single filaments demonstrated a flexural strength of 74 MPa at a porosity of 35 %. The hierarchical porous mullite-bonded SiC lattice structure with a total porosity of 69 % was near-net-shape sintered and exhibited a compressive strength as high as 41 MPa. Such structures are highly promising for wide applications such as electromagnetic shielding, burners, membrane supports, porous burners, filters, thermal insulation , catalyst supports, etc.
