Optimizing microbial electrolysis cell performance: strategies to mitigate electron mediator degradation on membranes

Zhao Shuo,Zeng Yu,Li Ying,Wang Zhen,Chen Li,Chen Kequan

This investigation probes the role of the electron mediator, neutral red (NR), in the electrosynthesis process, specifically examining its effect on the production of succinic acid by Actinobacillus succinogenes . Our findings reveal that NR, when integrated into the cell membrane, is pivotal for sustaining MEC efficiency. Nevertheless, it is susceptible to both intrinsic and MECs-induced degradation. Notably, during the exponential growth phase of the bacteria, NR is readily incorporated into the cell membrane. However, the supplemental addition of NR fails to significantly enhance the MEC’s capacity for succinic acid synthesis, no matter what stage of bacterial growth. And significant depletion of membrane-associated NR is not adequately compensated by the NR present in the fermentation liquid. The ORP feedback-regulated MECs adeptly conserve the NR on the cell membrane, which is essential for maintaining the efficiency of long-term electrosynthesis. The presence of NR on the cell membrane is essential for the functionality of MECs, yet its external replenishment hard. Implementing precise electro-potential regulation strategies can effectively diminish the degradation of NR, thus maintaining the system’s efficiency.

Accelerated degradation of stainless-steel passive film by humic acid-mediated extracellular electron transfer

Yuntian Lou,Shengyu He,Weiwei Chang,Hao Zhang,Jingzhi Yang,Hongchang Qian,Xiangping Hao,Dawei Zhang

The influence of humic acid-mediated extracellular electron transfer (EET) of Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 in microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) on 304 stainless steel was investigated. Humic acid plays a key role in accelerating passive film degradation in the presence of S. putrefaciens CN32, with a concentration-dependent effect; but has no effect when alone. It facilitated the formation of larger biofilm and increased Fe and Cr dissolution, resulting in a thinner, weakened passive film and intensified pitting corrosion. In-situ scanning electrochemical microscopy demonstrated S. putrefaciens CN32 utilized humic acid to perform outward EET, injecting electrons into the passive film and accelerating MIC.

Z-scheme CuBi2O4/carbon dots nanoflowers heterojunction to enhance solar photocatalytic sterilization

Ziyi Jiang,Qunfeng Yue,Changhong Guo,Huiming Lin

Here, CuBi 2 O 4 /carbon dots (CBO-CDs) were prepared to reveal their high-performance of solar photocatalytic sterilization. Firstly, CuBi 2 O 4 nanoflower assembled by nanotubes were synthesized via a hydrothermal strategy through the regulation of pH condition. The primary nanotubes shorten the distance for charge transfer, and the novel hierarchical structure also provides abundant active sites to enrich substrate. After the loading of CDs, the composites enhance light harvesting across the entire spectrum. Moreover, they possess Z-scheme mechanism endowing efficient charge separation and high redox potential. The photogenerated electrons can capture the dissolved O 2 to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can induce cellular inactivation by cleaving cell membrane and degrading cytogenetic constituents. The notable solar photocatalytic ability not only inactivate E. coli (96.88 ± 1.50 %) and S. aureus (99.96 ± 1.41 %) but also can damage their biofilms (above 91.70 ± 2.54 %) efficiently. Moreover, the practical complex lake sample was also investigated to reveal great bacteriostatic (97.65 ± 1.30 %) and methylene blue degradation (99.91 ± 1.40 %) ability, simultaneously. Additionally, CBO-CDs also can disinfect mask under irradiation, contributing to the development of self-cleaning mask. Given their broad-spectrum antimicrobial, novel biocompatibility, and solar-activation, CBO-CDs possess great practical application potential for sterilization.

Copper-Bearing Metal-Organic Framework with Mucus-Penetrating Function for the Multi-Effective Clearance of Mucosal Colonized Helicobacter pylori

Chunxi Shu,Wei Zhang,Yiwei Zhang,Yu Li,Xinbo Xu,Yanan Zhou,Yue Zhang,Qin Zhong,Cong He,Yin Zhu,Xiaolei Wang

Helicobacter pylori colonizes over 50% of people worldwide. Biofilm formation through penetrating gastric mucus and resistance acquired by H. pylori markedly reduces the efficacy of traditional antibiotics. The present triple therapy and bismuth-based quadruple therapy inevitably causes intestinal flora disturbance and fails to address the excessive H. pylori-triggered inflammatory response. Herein, a mucus-permeable therapeutic platform (Cu-MOF@NF) that consists of copper-bearing metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) loaded with nitrogen-doped carbon dots and naturally active polysaccharide fucoidan is developed. The experimental results demonstrate that Cu-MOF@NF can penetrate the mucus layer and hinder H. pylori from adhering on gastric epithelial cells of the stomach. Notably, released Cu2+ can degrade the polysaccharides in the biofilm and interfere with the cyclic growing mode of “bacterioplankton ↔ biofilm”, thereby preventing recurrent and persistent infection. Compared with traditional triple therapy, the Cu-MOF@NF not only possesses impressive antibacterial effect (even include multidrug-resistant strains), but also improves the inflammatory microenvironment without disrupting the balance of intestinal flora, providing a more efficient, safe, and antibiotic-free new approach to eradicating H. pylori.
