Self-propelling nanomotor made from halloysite and catalysis in Fenton-like reaction

Jian Wang,Yan Zhang,Weikun Ning,Peiping Zhang,Bo Jin,Yan Wang,Wei Zhang,Wenqing Li,Cundi Wei,Shiding Miao

A new class of catalytically self-propelled nanomotors were fabricated by modifying natural clay tubes, halloysite, with randomly distributed particles of MnO 2 and Fe 3 O 4 . The prepared MnO 2 –Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs composites were validated to be efficient Fenton catalysts in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Compared to the previous preparation of rolled-up microtubes or other template-assisted syntheses, this strategy has its merits in utilizing clay minerals of abundance, cheap-price, and no complex instruments needed. The nanomotors were able to be prepared on a large scale. The MnO 2 –Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs motors displayed powerful autonomous movement, and a high velocity of up to 380 µm s −1 was achieved in 5.0 wt. % H 2 O 2 solution. For Fenton catalysis of RhB, the removal ratio of 94% dye molecules was obtained within 30 min, which was triply higher than other samples of the nonpropelling sample Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs. The autonomous movement provided adsorptive bubble separation, and the adsorption capacity was greatly enhanced by halloysite. These synergistic effects boosted the removal efficiency of dye molecules. The presence of magnetic MnO 2 –Fe 3 O 4 made these motors move directionally in external magnetic fields and provided a facile recovery for collecting heterogeneous catalysts.

Autonomous motion of immobilized enzyme on Janus particles significantly facilitates enzymatic reactions

Yang Hu,Yan Sun

Autonomous motion propelled by the reactions of enzymes asymmetrically immobilized on Janus particles have attracted great attention due to its possible auspicious application as active biocompatible platforms. However, no research has focused on the effect of the autonomous motion on enzyme reactions. Hence, this work was designed to fabricate different enzyme-immobilized particles with asymmetrical (Janus) and symmetrical enzyme distributions and to investigate the interplay between enzymatic reactions and their motion behavior with lipase and urease as model enzymes. It was found that all the EIPs displayed substrate-concentration-dependent enhanced diffusions, but Janus enzyme-immobilized particles exhibited maximum enhancement (60%) of autonomous motion represented by diffusion coefficient as well as superior specific activity increments (>2 times). Namely, the enzymatic reactions were more significantly facilitated by the autonomous motions of the Janus enzyme-immobilized particles. The results indicated that the asymmetrical enzyme distribution on Janus particles enhanced the favorable mutual promotion between the self-propelled movement and enzymatic reactions, leading to improved diffusional and enzymatic performance. The results have thus provided insights into the design of new materials for enzyme immobilization and novel immobilized enzyme systems for various applications.

Sisheng Hu,Shuibin Shao,Huan Chen,Jiajia Sun,Jing Zhai,Hanyu Zheng,Mimi Wan,Yuhong Liu,Chun Mao,Jing Zhao

In this case, the development of Janus heparin-loaded ammoniated-hollow mesoporous silica (H-A-HMS) nanomotors was reported. First, A-HMS nanoparticles were prepared by combination of hard template (Fe3O4 regarded as core), soft template (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) regarded as mesoporous template agent) and ammoniated process. Then, the heparin was loaded into A-HMS nanoparticles by a simple soaking process, and Janus H-A-HMS nanomotors were fabricated by platinum (Pt) decorating onto the partial surface of H-A-HMS nanoparticles, which the bubble-propelled motion was obtain by the help of Pt catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into oxygen (gas) and water. Finally, results of a performance test indicated that the H-A-HMS nanomotors we proposed had good blood compatibility, noncytotoxicity, high load and controlled release of heparin, and autonomous motion ability. They will bring great potential for more applications of heparin in the biomedical field.

Yang Han,Yangsai Lyu,Ningning Xing,Xiaolei Zhang,Kaiyuan Hu,Hui Luo,Dickon H. L. Ng,Jia Li

Micromotors that combine the merits of micro-devices with specific functions and autonomous motion have numerous applications in environmental remediation. However, their practical application is blocked by low productivity, a complex preparation process and high cost. Herein, we developed a facile biomass route to synthesize ion-imprinted MnO2/CoFe2O4 Janus micromotors with appealing recognition and capture capacities for Pb(II) ions. Owing to the combination of autonomous motion, the ion imprinting technique, and magnetic recovery, the ion-imprinted MnO2/CoFe2O4 Janus micromotors exhibited highly sensitive and selective adsorption and quick removal of lead ions from water. Such a Janus micromotor reveals great potential in environmental remediation.

Responsive Janus Structural Color Hydrogel Micromotors for Label-Free Multiplex Assays.

Huan Wang,Lijun Cai,Dagan Zhang,Luoran Shang,Yuanjin Zhao

Micromotors with self-propelling ability demonstrate great values in highly sensitive analysis. Developing novel micromotors to achieve label-free multiplex assay is particularly intriguing in terms of detection efficiency. Herein, structural color micromotors (SCMs) were developed and employed for this purpose. The SCMs were derived from phase separation of droplet templates and exhibited a Janus structure with two distinct sections, including one with structural colors and the other providing catalytic self-propelling functions. Besides, the SCMs were functionalized with ion-responsive aptamers, through which the interaction between the ions and aptamers resulted in the shift of the intrinsic color of the SCMs. It was demonstrated that the SCMs could realize multiplex label-free detection of ions based on their optical coding capacity and responsive behaviors. Moreover, the detection sensitivity was greatly improved benefiting from the autonomous motion of the SCMs which enhanced the ion-aptamer interactions. We anticipate that the SCMs can significantly promote the development of multiplex assay and biomedical fields.

Self-powered locomotion of a hydrogel water strider

Hong Zhu,Borui Xu,Yang Wang,Xiaoxia Pan,Zehua Qu,Yongfeng Mei

Hydrogels are an exciting class of materials for new and emerging robotics. For example, actuators based on hydrogels have impressive deformability and responsiveness. Studies into hydrogels with autonomous locomotive abilities, however, are limited. Existing hydrogels achieve locomotion through the application of cyclical stimuli or chemical modifications. Here, we report the fabrication of active hydrogels with an intrinsic ability to move on the surface of water without operated stimuli for up to 3.5 hours. The active hydrogels were composed of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups and underwent a dynamic wetting process to achieve spatial and temporal control of surface tension asymmetry. Using surface tension, the homogeneous active hydrogels propelled themselves and showed controlled locomotion on water, similar to common water striders.

One-step fabrication of multifunctional micromotors

Wenlong Gao,Mei Liu,Limei Liu,Hui Zhang,Bin Dong,Christopher Y. Li

Although artificial micromotors have undergone tremendous progress in recent years, their fabrication normally requires complex steps or expensive equipment. In this paper, we report a facile one-step method based on an emulsion solvent evaporation process to fabricate multifunctional micromotors. By simultaneously incorporating various components into an oil-in-water droplet, upon emulsification and solidification, a sphere-shaped, asymmetric, and multifunctional micromotor is formed. Some of the attractive functions of this model micromotor include autonomous movement in high ionic strength solution, remote control, enzymatic disassembly and sustained release. This one-step, versatile fabrication method can be easily scaled up and therefore may have great potential in mass production of multifunctional micromotors for a wide range of practical applications.

Self-propelled Janus magnetic micromotors as peroxidase-like nanozyme for colorimetric detection and removal of hydroquinone

Xiaolei Zhang,Bin Liu,Tao Wei,Zongming Liu,Jinkai Li

Micromotors, which combine nanotechnology with autonomous movement, have attracted extensive interest in the field of environmental monitoring and remediation. However, it is still a challenge to develop a facile method to prepare a multifunctional micromotor for simultaneously detecting and removing organic pollutants from water. Herein, we report a novel magnetically controllable Janus micromotor with peroxidase-like activity for simultaneous colorimetric detection and degradation of hydroquinone (HQ). Such polyethylene glycol (PEG) modified Janus micromotor was composed of calcined manganese(II) acetate modified Fe3O4@polyacrylic acid (PAA) and ferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. The obtained Janus micromotors (P-FM JMMs) have a unique asymmetric structure and exhibit autonomous motion with a maximum speed of 95.2 ± 3.02 μm s−1 in the presence of 100 mM H2O2. Combining the advantages of autonomous motion and superior peroxidase-like activity, P-FM JMMs as effective micromotors were established for dynamic sensitive colorimetric detection of HQ with a detection limit of 0.0923 μM and rapid degradation of HQ via excellent Fenton-like activity in water. In addition, such Janus micromotors also could achieve effective magnetic recovery to reduce water pollution. The strategy provides a new insight for the future multifunctional task allocation of micromotors on demand.

3D hierarchical LDHs-based Janus micro-actuator for detection and degradation of catechol

Ningning Xing,Yangsai Lyu,Jia Li,Dickon H.L. Ng,Xiaolei Zhang,Weilin Zhao

Micro/nanomotors that combine the miniaturization and autonomous motion have attracted much research interest for environmental monitoring and water remediation . However, it is still challenging to develop a facile route to produce bifunctional micromotors that can simultaneously detect and remove organic pollutants from water. Herein, we developed a novel Janus micromotor with robust peroxide-like activity for simultaneously colorimetric detection and removal of catechol from water. Such laccase (Lac) functionalized Janus micromotor consisted of calcined MgAl-layered double hydroxides (MgAl-CLDHs) nanosheets and Co 3 O 4 -C nanoparticles (Lac-MgAl-CLDHs/Co 3 O 4 -C), revealing unique 3D hierarchical microstructure with highly exposed active sites. The obtained Janus micromotors exhibited autonomous motion with a maximum velocity of 171.83 ± 4.07 µm/s in the presence of 7 wt% H 2 O 2 via a chemical propulsion mechanism based on the decomposition of H 2 O 2 by Co 3 O 4 -C layer on the hemisphere surface of Janus micromotors. Owing to the combination of autonomous motion and high peroxide-like activity, Lac-MgAl-CLDHs/Co 3 O 4 -C Janus micromotors could sensitively detect catechol with the limit of detection of 0.24 μM. In addition, such Janus micromotors also could quickly degrade catechol by •OH generated from a Fenton-like reaction. It is a first step towards using autonomous micromotors for highly selective, sensitive, and facile detection and quick removal of catechol from water.

Asymmetrical Bullet-Shaped imprinted nanomotors for enhanced selective Pb(II) Removal: On-the-Move recognition and Capturing

Jinxin Liu,Pan Wang,Hengjia Zhu,Jianming Pan

Conventional heavy metal adsorbents are limited by passive mass transfer mechanisms that constrain separation efficiency in practical applications. Herein, we report a novel approach integrating autonomous nanomotor propulsion with selective molecular recognition for enhanced Pb(II) removal. Bullet-shaped Janus nanomotor adsorbents (JSNMs@IIPs) were synthesized through asymmetric emulsion templating, featuring silver nanoparticle-catalyzed propulsion chambers and ion-imprinted polymer recognition shells. Under H 2 O 2 fuel (10.0 wt%), JSNMs@IIPs exhibited controlled autonomous motion (23.1μm s −1 ) that delivered significant kinetic enhancement with 265 % faster adsorption rates compared to static systems. The JSNMs@IIPs achieved maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity (158.5 mg g −1 at 318 K) while maintaining high selectivity (k = 16.8–61.3) against competing metal ions and excellent regenerability (93 % capacity retention over seven cycles). XPS analysis revealed coordination-based adsorption through Pb-N interaction formation within pre-organized imprinted cavities, while autonomous motion enhanced mass transfer through active convection. This work establishes motion-enhanced molecular recognition for advanced separation technologies, demonstrating that nanomotor propulsion can simultaneously improve kinetics and maintain selectivity in complex separation challenges.

Enzyme Cascade Reaction-Propelled Multicompartmental Colloidal Motors

Qihan Zhang,Jun Liu,Yingjie Wu

Graphical An enzyme-driven multicompartmental colloidal motor was synthesized by using a facile microfluidic-based microdroplet technology. The colloidal motor could trigger enzyme cascade reaction in biocompatible fuel to generate local concentration gradient to provide net propulsion force for autonomous movement. Due to the advantages of the multicompartment, the colloidal motor has great potential for co-encapsulation of active species in biomedical applications. Compartmentalization is a crucial natural methodology to enable multiple biocatalytic transformations to proceed efficiently. Herein, we report a biocompatible multicompartmental colloidal motor that can achieve autonomous movement in the biological environment through two-enzyme cascade reactions of immobilized enzymes. The colloidal motors with the heterogeneous multicompartment structure were prepared in one step by microfluidic technology, and the compartmentalized encapsulation of glucose oxidase (GOD) and catalase (CAT) was realized. The fabricated colloidal motor was size controllable by tuning the flow rates of the microfluidic system, and its autonomous movement can be triggered by good responsiveness to the alkaline environment. In glucose medium of pH 7.5, the pH-responsive alginate cores of the colloidal motor swell to facilitate fuel penetration and enzyme-catalyzed reactions. The enzyme cascade between GOD and CAT immobilized in the colloidal motor chamber results in the self-propulsion of the colloid motor in glucose medium. The compartmentalized encapsulation of immobilized enzyme improves the stability of the enzyme and enables multicompartmental colloidal motors to self-propel in an alkaline intestinal environment through an enzyme cascade reaction. These features indicate that such multicompartmental colloidal motors actuated by enzyme cascade reaction in biocompatible fuel have great potential for co-encapsulation and autonomous movement in different applications.

Effects of microplastic exposure on the early developmental period and circadian rhythm of zebrafish (Danio rerio): A comparative study of polylactic acid and polyglycolic acid

Jialu Luan,Shuhui Zhang,Yixin Xu,Liang Wen,Xizeng Feng

Polyglycolic acid (PGA) is an emerging biodegradable plastic material. Together with polylactic acid (PLA), PGA is considered a suitable alternative to conventional plastics and has been widely used in biomedical and food packaging industries. However, degradable plastics continue to face the drawbacks of harsh degradation environment and long degradation time, and may harm the environment and the human body. Therefore, our study focused on assessing the effects of degradable microplastics PGA and PLA on the development and neurobehavior of zebrafish. The results showed that PGA and PLA had little effect on 3–10 hpf embryos. However, developmental stunting was observed in a100 mg/L PGA and PLA-exposed group at 24 hpf. In addition, PGA and PLA exposure decreased the survival and hatching rates, increased wakefulness, and reduced sleep in zebrafish. This indicates that PGA and PLA may affect the circadian behavior of zebrafish by affecting the brain–derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Therefore, our results suggest that PGA and PLA exposure induces developmental toxicity, reduces voluntary locomotion, induces of anxiety–like behaviors, and impairs sleep/wake behaviors in zebrafish larvae. This also suggests that the potentially toxic effects of degradable plastics cannot be ignored and that the biological effects of PGA require further research.
