The preparation of room-temperature self-healing polymeric materials with good healing efficiency and high mechanical strength is challenging. Two processes are essential to realise the room-temperature self-healing of materials: (a) a non-crystallised structure and interpenetration and diffusion of polymer chains; (b) fast reorganisation of the intermolecular bonds at damaged sites. Using these strategies, a new polyurethane elastomer is prepared in this study via three-step polyadditions using polytetramethylene ether glycol, isophorone diisocyanate, 2,6-pyridinedimethanol, and 4,4′-methylene bis(2-chloroaniline). The prepared elastomer possesses excellent tensile strength (34.1 MPa), high toughness (127.3 MJ m−3), high fracture energy (119.1 kJ m−2), and good stretchability (2014%). Furthermore, it exhibits strain-induced strengthening behaviour and its mechanical performances are superior to those of previously reported room-temperature self-healing polymer materials. The polyurethane elastomer synthesised via optimized hierarchical H-bonding interactions ultimately exhibited a synchronous self-healing efficiency of more than 83% with tensile strength, elongation, and toughness at 25 °C ± 2 °C after self-healing for 48 h. This study offers beneficial insights into the preparation of room-temperature self-healing polymers with high mechanical strength.

Acquiring simultaneous high strength and toughness, and efficient self-healability of polyurethane (PU) elastomer is of great challenge due to their exclusive dependence on hard segments. Herein, a transparent, puncture-resistant, notch-insensitive, resilient and self-healable elastomer (PDO-IP2.5) with giant tensile strength (29.5 ± 0.9 MPa), excellent toughness (124.9 ± 2.2 MJ/m 3 ), outstanding fracture energy (83.9 kJ/m 2 ), high puncture energy (625 mJ) and balanced self-healing efficiencies (SEs calculated in tensile strength, elongation at break and toughness > 95%) and fast physical wound re-mending (~60 s upon hot airflow) is successfully developed through deliberate phase regulation, i.e. rational design of asymmetric and bulky hard segments and optimization of hard segments content. The resulting loosely-packed hard domains play a pivotal role in conferring self-healability and generating stress-induced crystallization (SIC) of polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) chains during large deformation, which not only facilitates the chain mobility for heat-responsive dynamic exchange of hydrogen bonds and oxime-carbamate but also dissipate external force during stretching to help the SIC evolution of PTMEG chains. The SIC domains act as physical crosslinking junctions and reinforcing phase, resulting in remarkable strengthening and toughening. This strategy could enlighten researchers in academia and industry to develop strong and tough elastic materials. In the meantime, the unique comprehensive performance of the as-synthesized elastomer confers it with potential practical use in engineer-grade fields of puncture-resistant tire sealant and durable protective coatings.

Expanding the practical application range of self-healing materials has become an important challenge for developing smart materials. Herein, the synthesis of printable, triple-mode fluorescence responsive, and colorless self-healing elastomers, formed by the combination of disulfide cross-linked polyurethane (PU) polymers, carbon dots (CDs) down-conversion fluorescence materials, and lanthanide ions doped upconversion fluorescence materials. The PU elastomers with optimal mechanical properties and good restorability (recover large strain of 500% after relaxation at room temperature (R.T.) for 2 h) are selected to incorporate CDs for fabricating fluorescence responsive elastomers (denoted as PU-CDs). Significantly, the prepared PU-CDs exhibit not only superior tensile strength and toughness (20.95 MPa and 85.13MJ m –3 , respectively) than the previously reported R.T. self-healing elastomers but also show good self-healing properties and achieve blue fluorescence emissions under the ultraviolet excitation. Furthermore, a series of dual-mode fluorescence patterns based on formulated core@shell structural upconversion inks are prepared on the transparent PU-CDs elastomers by a directly screen-printing method. Self-healing and integrating a series of fluorescence patterns and damaged electrical patterns can also be accomplished successfully. The designed self-healing materials provide new ideas and important guidance for developing and applying the next generation of smart materials.

Lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ) doped upconversion crystals (UCCs) have promising application in optical anti-counterfeiting device, biomedical sensors and volumetric displays. However, these designed optical devices cannot recover their functions after mechanical damage and scratches. Herein, the novel upconversion fluorescence-responsive disulfide crosslinked polyurethane (DSPU) self-healing elastomers were designed for the first time, including the impaction of red-green-blue UCCs into DSPU (DSPU-UCCs) films and screen-printed fluorescence patterns on DSPU films. The DSPU-UCCs films exhibit tunable red-green-blue upconversion emissions as well as favorable mechanical properties (1037% stretchability) and self-healing ability (97.8% efficiency). The further investigations of the surface scratches and rheology results show that the disulfide bonds offer more efficient metathesis efficiency at higher temperatures. Moreover, the fluorescence-responsive self-healing elastomers can be reprocessed and reshaped, thus showing outstanding recyclability and sustainability. Directly screen-printing method was employed to fabricate versatile fluorescence patterns on DSPU elastomers, which can replace the traditional methods of relying on high-cost molds or masks to fabricate patterns. Healing scratches electronic patterns and assembling a series of versatile fluorescence patterns suggest that the upconversion fluorescence-responsive DSPU elastomers are highly promising for implementation in practical applications.

It remains an inherent challenge to simultaneously endow the self-healing materials with robust mechanical properties and extra functions, such as luminescence. Herein, a series of ultrastrong and tough elastomers were synthesized by simultaneously introducing multiple hydrogen bonds and polydentate chelating lanthanide-terpyridine (Ln3+-Tpy) coordination interactions into polymer chains. The optimal materials (noted as HMPU-Tpy0.1-Ln) show a record-high tensile strength of 40.9 MPa and a superior toughness of 308.63 MJ m–3 with a large extensibility of 2067%. In particular, the true fracture stress (0.91 GPa) of the HMPU-Tpy0.1-Ln polymer is comparable to that of typical spider silk (0.80–1.50 GPa) and its toughness is about 1.9 times that of typical spider silk (≈160 MJ m–3). The dynamic nature of the multiple hydrogen bonds and Ln3+-Tpy coordination also endow the material with acceptable self-healing performance, which can be improved by heating. Superior luminescence performance of the characteristic emission of the corresponding Ln3+ ions can be observed under the excitation of UV light. Besides, the break/recovery of energy transfer between Ln3+ and polymer–ligands triggered by acid–base gas endows HMPU-Tpy0.1-Ln with luminescence off/on switching behavior. We believe that the adopted approach in this work paves the way to prepare ultrastrong self-healing luminescent materials with stimulus-response performance.

The development of underwater remote stimulus-responsive self-healing polymer materials for applications in inaccessible and urgent situations is very challenging because water can readily disturb traditional noncovalent bonds and absorb heat, UV light, IR light, and electromagnetic wave energy at the wave band of micrometers and millimeters. Herein, visible-light-responsive diselenide bonds are employed as the healing moieties to produce a water-enhanced and remote self-healing elastomer triggered by a blue laser, which possesses excellent underwater transmission capability. During healing, the strain at break reaches ∼200% in 5 min and its toughness almost fully recovers within 1 h, which is estimated to be the fastest reported to date for healing silicone elastomers with a healing efficiency above 90%. The remote underwater pipeline sealing is instantly accomplished with the diselenide-containing elastomers by a blue laser 3 m away, thereby providing a direction for future emergent healing applications.

Corrosion remains a critical challenge, particularly in aqueous environments, where traditional coatings struggle to maintain integrity. Despite advancements, self-healing materials often exhibit insufficient healing efficiency and stability underwater. This work presents a novel PDMS-based self-healing elastomer, PDMS-SS 1 /UPy 1 , incorporating dynamic disulfide bonds and 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidone (UPy) unit for robust amphibious self-healing. Synthesized via a two-step reaction, PDMS-SS 1 /UPy 1 exhibits high thermal stability (T 5 % = 362 °C), excellent mechanical properties, and >92 % self-healing efficiency at 90 °C. FTIR, Raman, and XPS confirm successful SS/UPy incorporation, while SEM and AFM reveal uniform morphology. Contact angle measurements and adhesion tests confirm environmental stability and substrate compatibility. Furthermore, EIS demonstrates exceptional corrosion resistance (>10⁸ Ω·cm² in NaCl solution), and the innovative application of distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis provides deeper insights into the coating's electrochemical behavior. PDMS-SS 1 /UPy 1 offers a promising solution for durable anti-corrosion protection in demanding aqueous environments.

In this work, a self-healing elastomer involving reversible imine bonds was synthesized by Schiff base reaction between the amino groups in amino-modified polydimethylsiloxane (APDMS) and the aldehyde groups in 1,4-diformylbenzene (DFB). The incorporation of amino-modified multi-walled carbon nanotube (AMWCNT) allowed for good dispersion of AMWCNT with few aggregates and effectively balanced the mechanical properties and self-healing performance, achieving a mechanical strength of 132.3 kPa and a self-healing efficiency ( HE ) of 99.87% at room temperature after 24 h. The reversible imine bond based on the Schiff base linkage promotes quick self-healing upon damage without any external stimulus at room temperature. Through electroless deposition, copper and nickel patterns were formed on the surface of the elastomer, establishing conductive pathways. The average resistivity of the copper trace was 5.40 × 10 −8 Ω·m (3.63 × 10 −7 Ω·m for nickel trace), which is 3.18 times that of regular copper wire (5.19 times for regular nickel wire). Upon cleavage and self-healing of the elastomer with copper lines, with the resistivity increment by 14.43% in average (11.01% for nickel wire). This work offers an alternative pathway to the development of self-healable silicone elastomers for future flexible electronics. Highlights Elastomer with balanced mechanical properties and self-healing performance. Recyclable elastomer through hot-press treatment. Copper patterns were electroless-deposited on the elastomer. Damaged pattern restored conductivity within 24 h at room temperature.

As far as the self-healing elastomers are concerned, there is a contradiction between mechanical strength and self-healing performance because it’s hard to acquire strong intermolecular interaction and flexible segments motion concurrently. How to prepare room-temperature self-healing elastomers with high strength remains an enormous challenge. Herein, we synthesized room-temperature self-healing thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) incorporated with multiple hydrogen bonds, reversible disulfide bonds and coordination bonds simultaneously. The prepared elastomers exhibit a tensile strength of over 16.1 MPa and a fracture strain of 771%, which are robust in comparison to most previous reports. The multiple dynamic bonds endow the elastomers with a high self-healing efficiency (94%) within 24 h at room temperature . The self-healing mechanism was expounded from the perspective of the aggregate structure such as the degree of aggregation, the degree of microphase separation and molecular dynamics. It can be calculated by the dynamic mechanical analysis that the activation energy of the target elastomer is lower than that of samples without dynamic interactions, which is of advantage to self-healing properties.

The integration of self-healing properties into waterborne polyurethane (WPU) represents a significant advancement in materials chemistry. However, the practical application of self-healing WPU is often hindered by its compromised toughness, flexibility, and water resistance, as well as the challenges accompanied by complex production processes and high manufacturing costs. In this study, we propose a novel network optimization strategy that leverages the synergistic effects of multiple lateral hydrogen bonds from amide (A)–urea (U) motifs, hydrophobic aggregation of non-crystalline flexible alkyl segments, branched topology, and intrinsic intermolecular interactions within WPU. This strategy is implemented through a straightforward, stepwise chain extension synthesis of WPU, incorporating a biomass-derived chain extender (CA) designed from the condensation of cost-effective dimer acid and pentylenediamine. Remarkably, the optimized WPU exhibited bio-elastic tissue-like properties, including self-healing capability, high strength, toughness, ductility, low modulus and minimal water absorption. The self-healed material, derived from recycled film fragments, achieves an ultimate tensile strength of 41.4 MPa and an elongation at break of 1040%, with no significant stiffening or loss of elasticity. Additionally, the material demonstrated excellent interfacial adhesion, conductivity and strain sensitivity, making it suitable for use as a conductive elastomer. Furthermore, when plasticized with electrolytes, the material exhibited room-temperature self-healing within the conductive network, providing broad potential for applications in flexible electronics and related fields.

Due to the multiple different properties in self-healing elastomers that are mutually exclusive based on the different and contradictory molecule chain structures, simultaneously achieving the ultrahigh mechanical performance and high durability of self-healing elastomers is a great challenge and the goal that has always been pursued. Herein, we report a novel strategy to fabricate a self-healing elastomer by introducing interlaced hydrogen bonds with superhigh binding energy. Distinguishing from the quadruple hydrogen bonds reported already, the interlaced hydrogen bond with a lower repulsive secondary interaction and higher binding energy is composed of two molecule units with different lengths and steric hindrance. Connected by the interlaced hydrogen bonds, a supramolecule interlocking network is formed to lock the polymer chains at room temperature, endowing the poly(urethane–urea) elastomer with an unprecedented ultrahigh strength (117.5 MPa, even higher than some plastics), the superhigh fracture energy (522.46 kJ m–2), and an excellent puncture resistance (puncture force reached 181.9 N). Moreover, the elastomers also exhibited excellent self-healing properties (healing efficiency up to 95.8%), high transparency (the average transmittance up to 91.0%), and good durability (including thermal decomposition resistance, thermal oxidation aging resistance, water resistance, and solvent resistance), providing a theoretical basis and technical reference in the development and broadening the application prospects of self-healing elastomers.
