Robust photothermal anti/de-icing hydrophobic coating based on polydopamine (PDA) composition

Xiangming Yang,Yan Liu,Yuting Zhong,Hui Chen

The hydrophobic soft coating has low ice adhesion strength and hydrophobic stability in low-temperature and high-humidity environments, which is crucial for preventing ice formation on infrastructure and transportation systems. However, creating mechanically durable hydrophobic soft coatings using simple methods remains challenging. In this study, a high-hardness particle-toughened, self-stratifying organic layer with high photothermal conversion rate was developed to enhance coating durability and ice-repellent performance. By optimizing the ratio of dopamine (DA) and sodium alginate (SA), a hydrophobic photothermal agent (DPSn) with high hardness and a significant light-heat effect was synthesized. A durable, hydrophobic photothermal anti-ice coating (AR/20 %PDMS/x%DPS1) with varying DPS1 amounts was successfully created using a straightforward one-step spray method, utilizing the self-stratification characteristics of acrylic resin (AR) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), along with the toughening effect of DPSn. The fiber cross-linked structure of DPS1 achieved a photothermal conversion rate of 87.5 %. Adding 4 wt% DPS1 increased the surface temperature of the AR/20 %PDMS coating to 96.5 ± 2.4 °C and boosted the coating’s adhesion strength from 6.70 ± 0.3 MPa to 7.23 ± 0.7 MPa. The AR/20 %PDMS/4%DPS1 coating demonstrated excellent anti-/de-icing performance after 60 friction cycles, 60 icing/de-icing cycles, and 132 h of acid-base immersion. Its simple preparation process and durable ice-repellent properties make it highly suitable for practical applications in photothermal hydrophobic soft coatings.

Cathode/Anode Interface and Performance of a Membrane-Free Thermally Regenerative Flow Battery via Density-Induced Self-Stratified Electrolytes

Shuai Tang,Qiang Jiang,Yu Shi,Liang Zhang,Jun Li,Xuhui Jiang,Peng Zou,Zhang Luo

Thermally regenerative batteries have promising applications in low-temperature waste-heat recovery, but ammonia crossover severely reduces battery power generation and its stability. To address this issue, a membrane-less self-stratified thermally regenerative flow battery was constructed to alleviate ammonia crossover. The interface visualization, power generation feasibility, and the effects of flow rate were investigated. The results reveal that the density difference of the anolyte/catholyte leads to self-stratification. The interface moves continually due to ammonia diffusion in the static catholyte, resulting in a significant decrease in the battery performance. By regulating the catholyte flow rate, a steady anode–cathode interface can be achieved, thereby solving the key problem of ammonia crossover and achieving stable power generation. Increasing the catholyte flow rate can produce a stable interface and prevent the interface from moving to the cathode. However, a high catholyte flow rate will allow the interface to surpass the anode electrode, causing battery performance to increase and then decrease with flow rate. Increasing the ammonia flow rate can effectively improve the anode mass transfer and battery performance. The interface is affected by temperature change, so the interface is investigated at different temperatures. Within a specific range, there is no significant change in the position of the interface, and the battery’s maximum power density improves linearly with temperature.

Simultaneous realization of antifouling, self-healing, and strong substrate adhesion via a bioinspired self-stratification strategy

Peng Hu,Ru Xie,Qingyi Xie,Chunfeng Ma,Guangzhao Zhang

Antifouling ability and substrate adhesion are typical trade-offs seen for a silicone coating. Furthermore, the self-healable inability limits their duration. This study reports a bioinspired self-stratifying coating composed of a polyurethane with dopamine and silane pedant groups and a bi-silanol-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) with fluorocarbon and poly(ethylene glycol) segments as a reactive amphiphilic polymer (RAP). During coating formation, the RAP with low surface energy can be enriched on the surface due to the self-stratifying effects, whereas the bioinspired dopamine and silane groups provide the coating with strong substrate adhesion. Besides, the multiple hydrogen bonds formed between the urethane linkages and the dopamine groups allow the coating to heal. Our study indicates such a polyurethane-based coating has excellent antifouling ability against proteins, bacteria, and diatoms, good self-healing performance at room temperature in air and water, as well as high adhesion strength on various substrates such as ceramic, steel, glass, and wood. This study provides a promising and universal strategy for the simultaneous realization of antifouling, self-healing, and strong substrate adhesion. The coatings could meet the needs of applications in marine antifouling, biomedical instruments, and other fields.

Self-Stratifying Colorful Low-Emissivity Paint for Thermal Regulation and Energy Saving

Yilin Wang,Guowei Tang,Xuexue Xiang,Mulin Qin,Yu Qiu,Jian-Cheng Lai,Yucan Peng

Low-emissivity materials are regarded as promising candidates for thermal insulation. However, aesthetic concerns often hinder their practical application, primarily due to metallic gray coloration. While some colorful low-emissivity paints have been developed to address this issue, the labor application costs and complex preparation processes remain significant drawbacks. Here, a new category of self-stratifying colorful low-emissivity paints (SSCLPs) is presented, engineered to spontaneously form a distinct bilayer structure with a single application, thus eliminating the need for a second coat. Through careful formulation, the resulting bilayer coating features a highly reflective bottom layer and an infrared (IR)-transparent colored top layer, demonstrating low mid-infrared emissivity (as low as 0.107), high near-infrared reflectance (up to 0.814), and selectively visible reflectance for desired colors. Simulations confirm that effective stratification is essential for achieving the desired optical properties. Thermal insulation experiments demonstrate that SSCLPs can efficiently resist radiative heat transfer. Furthermore, building energy simulations indicate that SSCLP application to a two-story office building can yield annual heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) savings of up to 13.38 MJ m − 2 , with an associated CO 2 emission reduction of 1.1 kg m − 2 . This study contributes to advancing thermal insulation materials that promote energy savings and sustainability objectives.

Bio-based self-stratifying waterborne coatings via silicone-induced phase separation for enhanced hardness and anti-graffiti performance

Yuchen Zhang,Gonghao Wang,Die Yang,Yongbo Ding,Yinxiu Zuo,Liang Shen

This study developed a green and bio-based waterborne coating system that self-stratifies via silicone-induced phase separation. The system is built on a rosin acid-modified epoxy ester/acrylate hybrid resin and includes a small amount of vinyl-terminated silicone oil to promote phase separation. Two resin formulations were prepared, namely a silicone oil-free epoxy ester/acrylate hybrid resin (designated as EAR20, rosin acid constitutes 20 % of the total carboxylic acid content of epoxy ester) and a counterpart containing 2.5 wt% vinyl-terminated silicone oil (designated as EAR80–2.5, rosin acid constitutes 80 % of the total carboxylic acid content of epoxy ester). Self-stratifying coatings were fabricated by blending these two resins, with optimal performance observed at a 2:1 (EAR20:EAR80–2.5) mass ratio. During curing, the silicone-containing resin phase preferentially migrated to the surface, forming a distinct silicone-rich upper layer in a one-step process. This stratified architecture yields a hard, hydrophobic surface while preserving robust adhesion and mechanical integrity in the bulk. Compared to the silicone-free coating (with pure EAR20), the self-stratifying coating exhibited a markedly higher surface hardness (pencil hardness increased from B to H) and significantly improved durability. Water resistance in an immersion test extended from 7 days to 12 days without failure, and abrasion resistance increased from 5 ± 1 to 41 ± 2 cycles. The static water contact angle also rose from 75 ± 2° to 89 ± 2°, indicating a more hydrophobic surface. Furthermore, the silicone-rich top layer imparted anti-graffiti functionality, enabling sprayed ink to be easily wiped off without residue. Overall, this silicone oil-induced stratification strategy synergistically enhances both mechanical robustness and surface properties, offering a promising and sustainable route for developing high-performance waterborne coatings.

Self-stratified aqueous biphasic Zn–I and Zn–Br batteries enabled by spontaneous phase separation and halogen extraction effects of ionic liquids

Kaiqiang Zhang,Yang Ge,Qianchuan Yu,Pengbo Zhang,Yuge Feng,Zuoxiu Tie,Jing Ma,Zhong Jin

Self-stratified liquid electrode batteries are considered as a viable solution for large-scale energy storage applications due to their high safety and low cost. However, achieving long-term operation stability with high efficiency of selective ion migration/separation in multiple liquid phases remains a challenge. Here, we report an aqueous biphasic system based on imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) for constructing membrane-free self-stratified aqueous biphasic Zn–I and Zn–Br batteries. The limited intersolubility and density difference between the IL-dominated catholyte and the aqueous anolyte create a self-stratified liquid-liquid phase separation structure, promising a reliable battery construction. Molecular dynamics simulations identify the internal association of IL, which forms a 3D H–bond network with the C–H···O interaction being the primary contributor, along with a thermodynamic electron transfer of ≤0.03 e. Additionally, a unique π + –bond effect is found between the positively charged imidazole ring of cation and the anion of IL. The as-constructed self-stratified aqueous biphasic Zn–halogen batteries work stably without the necessity of air isolation and exhibit long-term cycling stability (with a capacity mentation of 81.0 % for Zn–I batteries and 76.8 % for Zn–Br batteries over 1000 cycles), high energy efficiencies (93.5 % for Zn–I batteries and 86.7 % for Zn–Br batteries), inherent fire resistance and good scalability, demonstrating great potential for large-scale energy storage applications.

Method for preparing a self-stratifying epoxy/acrylic resin coating with micron-sized FeSiCr

Zhang Linbo,Hong Mu-Nai Jin,Yang Ruoyu,Jiang Xianyu,Zhou Yusheng,Zhang Tongqing,Yuan Le

This study develops and explores a self-stratifying coating system that incorporates both epoxy and acrylic resins. It examines the impact of film thickness and substrate type on self-stratification behavior, confirms predictions from the surface energy model, and identifies the surface tension gradient as the primary driving mechanism for stratification. Additionally, this research investigates the influence of FeSiCr powder on the stratification behavior of the coating. Results demonstrate that the self-stratifying coating, composed of a blend of epoxy and acrylic resins with FeSiCr powder, exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to coatings formulated solely from a mixture of epoxy resin and FeSiCr powder. SEM-EDS analysis reveals that the enhanced corrosion resistance can be attributed to the accumulation of epoxy resin and FeSiCr at the bottom of the coating, while the acrylic resin forms an effective protective layer on the surface. Furthermore, the study examines the effects of FeSiCr powder content, solvent addition, and volatilization rate on the stratified structure and appearance of the coating. The findings indicate that at relatively low FeSiCr powder content, the layered structure of the coating remains largely intact, with the powder predominantly residing within the epoxy resin layer. However, increasing the powder content compromises the self-stratification structure, leading to a rougher coating surface. It is also observed that augmenting the quantity of the xylene/butyl acetate mixture reduces pit formation on the surface, while the use of MIBK solvent results in incomplete stratification and exacerbates surface roughness.
