Rapidly self-healing, magnetically controllable, stretchable, smart, moldable nanoparticle composite gel

Wenhui Zheng,Yangyang Li,Huawei Wei,Guolin Gao,Dawei Zhang,Zaixing Jiang

Rational design of a magnetic and fast self-healing gel is significant in the field of shape construction. Magnetic gels with rapid self-healing ability constructed using nanoparticles and dynamic chemical bonds have so far been elusive. Here, an ultrafast self-healing magnetic gel based on thioctic acid (TA), ferric chloride (FeCl3) and ferric oxide (Fe3O4) has been successfully synthesized. The reversible interactions of the S–S bond, hydrogen bond and iron(III)–carboxylate coordinate bonds endow a 100% self-healing efficiency for the magnetic gel after healing in air for only 10 min, and a saturation magnetization of the gel of 0.27 emu g−1 can be achieved. The intelligent in situ healing ability of the as-obtained magnetic gel guarantees the same function and shape as the original gel. This combination of high-efficiency repaired performance and magnetic properties can broaden the range of applications for shape construction through the “building blocks” consisting of magnetic gels.

Rapid self-healing nanocomposite gel crosslinked by LDH for lost circulation control

Cheng Wang,Jinsheng Sun,Yifu Long,Li Peng,Yingying Li,Ren Wang,Yuanzhi Qu,Xumin Yang

Lost circulation presents a complex challenge in drilling operations. Ascribed to the favorable remaining in fracture, strong resistance to efflux, and entire gel block rather than individual particles, the self-healing gels have been broadly applied as lost circulation material (LCM). In this study, we utilized layered bimetallic hydroxide (LDH) as a dynamic crosslinking agent to synthesize a novel nanocomposite (NC) gel through in-situ polymerization following the stripping of LDH in acrylic acid (AA) solution. LDH/PAA NC gels exhibit excellent self-healing properties, rheological strength, mechanical properties and adhesion properties, with these attributes being influenced by the LDH content. At 110 °C, the optimal LDH/PAA NC gel rapidly self-healed in bentonite mud within 1 h, revealing storage modulus (G′) of 4041 Pa, tensile strength of 8.04 kPa, and adhesion strength of 2.1 kPa. Visual plugging tests revealed that the LDH/PAA NC gel could withstand pressures up to 4 MPa, surpassing the capabilities of MA gel, which lacked self-healing properties. These findings highlight the potential of LDH/PAA NC gels as efficient LCM, offering a promising solution for controlling lost circulation during drilling operations.

Facile synthesis of self-healing gel via magnetocaloric bottom-ignited frontal polymerization

Xiang-Yun Du,Si-Si Liu,Cai-Feng Wang,Guan Wu,Su Chen

A series of the self-healing gels facilely fabricated by VI (N-vinyl imidazole) and MAH-β-CD (β-cyclodextrin grafted vinyl carboxylic acid groups) via bottom-ignited frontal polymerization (BIFP) initiated by magnetocaloric effect. Once ignited the bottom phase, the heat upward propagates to generate the “front” in the upper phase. Then, no further energy is added to maintain the reaction and the whole polymerization process experiences within minutes. In this system, the dependence of frontal velocity and temperature, along with morphology, swelling capacity, mechanical property, and self-healing efficiency, on the preparation parameters is investigated. Interestingly, the gels show good swelling capacity in the organic solvent, comparatively almost no absorption in water. Moreover, the as-prepared gels exhibit excellent auto-healing properties without any external stimuli at ambient temperature. The healed sample possesses 97% recovery of its tensile strength after 8 h healing time, which relies largely on the host–guest interaction between VI and MAH-β-CD. The results demonstrate that FP can be utilized as an efficient and energy-saving method to synthesize self-healing supramolecular gels. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Rapid preparation of auto-healing gels with actuating behaviour

Feng-Xiang Wang,Qing Li,Si-Si Liu,Xiang-Yun Du,Cai-Feng Wang,Su Chen

Gels with multiple stimuli-responsive actuating behaviour have shown great potential in many applications. Nevertheless, facile approaches to rapidly preparing gel actuators are still highly needed, and obtaining gels possessing both actuating and auto-healing capabilities remains a challenge. Herein, we report the rapid preparation of gel actuators with a self-healing ability. Dual-component gels, composed of poly(BA-co-VI-co-AM) (G-1) and poly(BA-co-AA-co-AM/β-CD) (G-2) (BA = butyl acrylate, VI = N-vinyl imidazole, AM = acrylamide, AA = acrylic acid, β-CD = β-cyclodextrin), are prepared within 10 minutes (min) via biphase frontal polymerization (FP). Both G-1 and G-2 gels show excellent intrinsic self-healing properties based on hydrogen bonds, with healing efficiencies of 91% and 97%, respectively; self-healing between G-1 and G-2 also occurs due to hydrogen bonding and host–guest interactions. Moreover, dual-component gels, in terms of G-1 and G-2 bilayer gel flowers and strips, heterogeneous healed bilayer gel strips, and microfluidic-directed bilayer gel microsphere ensembles, all show actuating behaviour in acidic, alkaline and organic solutions, with actuation degrees up to 96% in 5 min. The actuation mechanism is also proposed. This work might provide new insights into fast synthesis of self-healing dual-component gels towards application in the actuator field.

Degradable Temperature-Sensitive Hydrogel Loaded with Heparin Effectively Prevents Post-Operative Tissue Adhesions

Puxin Lang,Tiantian Liu,Shiqi Huang,Zhaojie Zhou,Mengxing Zhang,Yunzhu Lin,Qin He,Yuqin Yao,Zhenmi Liu,Ling Zhang

Tissue adhesions could occur following surgeries, and severe tissue adhesions can lead to serious complications. Medical hydrogels could be applied at surgical sites as a physical barrier to prevent tissue adhesion. For practical reasons, spreadable, degradable, and self-healable gels are highly demanded. To meet these requirements, we applied carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) to poloxamer-based hydrogels to generate low Poloxamer338 (P338) content gels displaying low viscosity at refrigerator temperature and improved mechanical strength at body temperature. Heparin, an effective adhesion inhibitor, was also added to construct P338/CMCS-heparin composite hydrogel (PCHgel). PCHgel presents as a flowable liquid below 20 °C and could rapidly transform into gel when spread on the surface of damaged tissue due to temperature change. The introduction of CMCS enabled hydrogels to form a stable self-healable barrier at injured positions and slowly release heparin during the wound healing period before being degraded after ∼14 days. Ultimately, PCHgel significantly reduced tissue adhesion in model rats and displayed higher efficiency than P338/CMCS gel without heparin. Its adhesion suppression mechanism was verified, and it also displayed good biosafety. Therefore, PCHgel showed good clinical transformation potential with high efficacy, good safety, and ease of use.

Injectable Co-assembled microgels for programmed endogenous regeneration of nucleus pulposus

Yize Zhao,Xing Li,Chengkun Zhao,Yujiang Fan,Ganjun Feng,Yong Sun

Endogenous regeneration of the nucleus pulposus (NP) is hindered by inefficient recruitment of stem/progenitor cells, limited control over differentiation, and poor matrix maintenance. Here, we developed a microsphere-based platform (GBKE) that transforms upon mild hydration into a dynamic, self-healing hydrogel, allowing in situ gelation and stable retention within soft tissues. The hydrogel forms a highly porous, interconnected network that facilitates nutrient transport and deep cellular infiltration. The microspheres form an interpenetrating network structure by co-assembling through β-sheet/π-π stacking driven self-assembly, combining gelatin methacrylamide (GelMA) with the self-assembling small molecule BPAA-GFF. The chondrogenic-inducing small molecule kartogenin is bound to the BPAA-GFF nanofiber network through non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic forces, achieving sustained inducing effect. The MSC affinity peptide E7 is covalently coupled to the surface of the microspheres to achieve targeted cell homing. Thanks to the enhanced effect of the nanofiber network induced by BPAA-GFF, the storage modulus (≈1700 Pa) and critical shear stress (≈35 Pa) of the microgels are significantly higher than those of pure GelMA microgel. In vivo, GBKE microgels significantly improved disc height index and extracellular matrix restoration in rat models, maintaining NP regeneration for at least 8 weeks. In rabbit models, MRI analyses and histological results confirmed durable structural and functional repair for up to 12 weeks. This system enables the programmed regulation of endogenous cell behavior, offering a promising approach for minimally invasive intervertebral disc repair.
