A new triboelectric nanogenerator with excellent electric breakdown self-healing performance

Zhipeng Wu,Jun Chen,D.W. Boukhvalov,Zhenyang Luo,Lijun Zhu,Yijun Shi

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can convert all kinds of mechanical energy into electricity. Comparing with the traditional electromagnetic generator (EMG), TENG has obvious higher efficiency in harvesting low frequency mechanical energy with advantages of much lower cost, smaller size and so on. However, TENG suffers unpredictable damages due to stretching, bending, compression, interface friction, electric breakdown, etc. Materials with self-healing properties provide a good solution to this problem. In this study, a new TENG was developed based on a new type polyurethane-based self-healing elastomer with good mechanical self-healing property (healing efficiency is about 96%) and excellent electric breakdown self-healing performance (healing efficiency is 90%). Self-healing mechanism study indicates that the excellent self-healing properties comes from a combination of intermolecular hydrogen bonding, weak and dynamic coordination bonds between Fe 3+ and pyridine rings. The developed TENG can generate an open-circuit voltage of 180 V, a short-circuit of 1.3 μA, and with a maximum power of 40 mW·m −2 . The developed TENG shows an excellent stability (no output performance degrading even after a 3000 cycles). It is also interesting to find that the output electrical properties of the developed TENG before and even after several times mechanical self-healing or electrical breakdown self-healing can be almost 100% restored to the original state.

Constructing Electrically and Mechanically Self-Healing Elastomers by Hydrogen Bonded Intermolecular Network

Ruiyu Yang,Yujin Yao,Zaihua Duan,Zhen Yuan,Huiling Tai,Yadong Jiang,Yonghao Zheng,Dongsheng Wang

One key limitation of artificial skin-like materials is the shortened service life caused by mechanical damages during practical applications. The ability to self-heal can effectively extend the material service life, reduce the maintenance cost, and ensure safety. Therefore, it is important and necessary to fabricate materials with simultaneously mechanical and electrical self-healing behavior in a facile and convenient way. Herein, we report a stretchable and conductive self-healing elastomer based on intermolecular networks between poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) through a facile and convenient postreduction and one-pot method. The introduction of rGO provides the PAA-GO elastomers with good mechanical stability and electrical properties. Moreover, this material exhibited both electrical and mechanical self-healing properties. After cutting, the elastomers self-healed quickly (∼30 s) and efficiently (∼95%) at room temperature. The elastomers were accurate and reliable in detecting external strain even after healing. The elastomers were further applied for strain sensors, which were attached directly to human skin to monitor external movements, including finger bending and wrist twisting.

Coordinated silicon elastomer coating@fabrics with oil/water separation capabilities, outstanding durability and ultra-fast room-temperature self-healing ability

Yawen Huang,Yuxing Shan,Shuai Liang,Xiuli Zhao,Gang Jiang,Chengyao Hu,Junxiao Yang,Lili Liu

Coating@fabrics with self-healing hydrophobic properties for oil/water separation have attracted significant attention. However, currently used self-healing coating@fabrics only enable the recovery of surface properties of the coating on fabrics. If the coating gets seriously damaged from the interior (i.e., torn apart), the recovery of the oil/water separation performance becomes difficult. In this study, a novel strategy to achieve a self-healing ability based on coating materials with reversible dynamic bonds was proposed. To develop this idea, a self-healing silicon elastomer cross-linked via cobalt (Co)-based coordination was coated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics. The as-modified fabrics exhibited hydrophobic properties with a contact angle (CA) of >140°, a high oil/water separation factor of around 99%, high durability (even at extremely low temperatures), and an ultra-fast self-healing ability at room temperature. After being immersed in liquid nitrogen and damaged under beating, the modified fabrics still exhibited fast self-healing properties (healing time was just 10 min) and a high oil/water separation efficiency of above 98%. Thus, this study proposes a novel design concept for the fabrication of coating@fabrics with outstanding self-healing efficiency to recover oil/water separation performance at room temperature, and may pave a way for the development of an efficient family of self-healing fabrics.

Crosslinked reprocessable phosphor/polyurethane composite networks with thermal induced self-healing capacity and ultraviolet conducted fluorescence effect

Xiyang Zeng,Tao Chen,Yonggui Liu,Ting Zhang,Li Wang

In recent years, self-healing materials have attracted extensive attentions, however, the low elasticity have limited their applications, and it is difficult to track their healing process on macroscale. Herein covalently crosslinked polyurethane (PU) composite networks were developed with thermal induced self-healing capability and ultraviolet (UV) initiated fluorescence effect, which were synthesized by polytetrahydrofuran glycol (PTMG) as soft segment, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as hard segment, incorporating with blue phosphate (BP) of SrAl 2 O 4 doped with Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ . The physio chemical properties and self-healing process of polyurethane were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM), optical microscope (OM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and tensile test. The results showed that the network materials were successfully developed with high elastic tensile properties. After healing at 60 °C for one hour, the PU network demonstrated a high healing efficiency and elongation at break. Moreover, the obtained hybrid networks emitted an intense blue light under UV with high fluorescent intensity to track healing process. Additionally, the synergistic effect of transesterification of dynamic hydrogen bond provided the composite networks reproducibility for recycling use. This self-healing polyester material shows promising applications in the fields of diagnostic healing and optoelectronic components.

Plant oil and amino acid-derived elastomers with rapid room temperature self-healing ability

Wenjin Guo,Xiaohan Wang,Xingyuan Lu,Xiang Li,Yang Li,Junqi Sun

The replacement of petrochemical-based self-healing elastomers with biomass-based counterparts is of great significance for environmental protection. Herein, oleic acid and histidine are exploited for the fabrication of biomass-derived elastomers with rapid room temperature self-healing ability. The self-healing elastomers are first synthesized by grafting histidine onto poly(oleic acid) (denoted as POA–His), followed by crosslinking POA–His with transition metal salts. The mechanical properties of the resulting elastomers can be readily controlled by the variation of metal ions as the strength of the coordination bonds is determined by the type of metal ions. The reversibility of the coordination bonds between histidine and metal ions allows the elastomers to be finely healed at room temperature within 1.5 h and recycled multiple times without degradation. We believe that the present study provides a novel route for the fabrication of elastomers with extended service life, good reliability, and minimal impact on the environment.

Incomplete ionic interactions and hydrogen bonds constructing elastomers with water accelerated Self-Healing and self-healing strengthening capacities

Hao Jiang,Tong Yan,Wuting Pang,Meng Cheng,Zhihao Zhao,Tinglei He,Zhikun Wang,Chunling Li,Shuangqing Sun,Songqing Hu

Self-healing polymers with microphase separation structure typically require external stimuli to achieve self-healing, and their performance often degrades. To solve these issues, we introduce tertiary amine and carboxyl groups into polymer. The intermolecular ionic interactions and H-bonds contribute to the formation of microphase separation structures, endowing polyurethane elastomers (PU-n) outstanding mechanical properties with a maximum tensile strength and toughness of 20.61 MPa and 59.02 MJ/m 3 , respectively. The self-healing of the prepared PU-n can be achieved at room temperature and accelerated significantly by water because hard phases can be dissociated, resulting in enhanced molecular movement. After self-healing with water, the enhanced molecular movement and further ionization of ionic groups lead to stronger H-bonds and ionic interactions, promoting more distinct microphase separation. Thus, the mechanical strength is strengthened and the self-healing efficiency can reach 104.72 %. The enhanced molecular movement and strengthened intermolecular interactions when self-healing with water can also be verified through in-depth analysis of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the self-healing process. Furthermore, PU-n display remarkable shape memory and can be recycled through exposure to solvents and hot water. This study provides a novel and general method for preparing materials that can self-heal with water and self-strengthen after self-healing.

Room temperature readily self-healing polymer via rationally designing molecular chain and crosslinking bond for flexible electrical sensor

Xianzhang Wu,Jinqing Wang,Jingxia Huang,Shengrong Yang

Mechanically tough polymers with excellent room temperature self-healing capacity have aroused strong interest in soft electronics, electronic skins and flexible energy storage devices. However, achieving such polymers remains a challenge due to tardy diffusion dynamics. Herein, a robust and readily self-healing polymer, which is synthesized by one-pot polymerization among 2,4′-tolylene diisocyanate, isophorone diisocyanate, and poly(oxy-1,4-butanediyl), is achieved through reasonably tuning the hardness of the molecular segment and the strength of the dynamic crosslinking bond. The poly(oxy-1,4-butanediyl) that act as a soft segment can effectively avoid the microphase separation, enabling rapid chain mobility of the polymer at the room temperature. Furthermore, the dual H-bonding from 2,4′-tolylene diisocyanate segment acting as a relatively strong crosslinking bond contributes to high mechanical strength, while the weaker single H-bonding from isophorone diisocyanate segment can efficiently dissipate strain energy by bond rupture, endowing the polymer with rapid room temperature self-healing ability. Featuring state-of-the-art of robust stress strength (≈1.3 MPa), high self-healing efficiency (97% within 6 h), and large tensile strain (≈2100%), the resulting polymers are used for the fabrication of stretchable and self-healable electrical sensor, which can be employed to monitor a variety of physiological activities in real time. The described strategy is promising and universal for healable materials, displaying great potential for developing soft electronics.

Hydrogen bonding derived self-healing polymer composites reinforced with amidation carbon fibers

Ying Wang,Dawei Jiang,Lu Zhang,Bin Li,Caiying Sun,Hui Yan,Zijian Wu,Hu Liu,Jiaoxia Zhang,Jincheng Fan,Hua Hou,Tao Ding,Zhanhu Guo

Self-healing polymer materials (SHPM) have aroused great interests in recent years. Ideal SHPM should have not only simple operations, but also high elongations at break, tensile strain and self-healing properties at room temperature. Herein, the amidated carbon fibers (CFs) reinforced self-healing polymer composites were designed by hydrogen bonding interaction between functionalized CFs and hyperbranched polymers. The amidated CFs were prepared by transformation of hydroxyl to acylamino through a one-step amidation. By introducing amidated CFs, amidated CFs self-healing polymer composites (called AD-CF) exhibited many desirable characteristics compared to pure polymer composites, such as a better elasticity, lower healing temperatures, and higher self-healing efficiencies. The stress–strain test was selected to carefully study the self-healing property of the AD-CF. The observed same recovery condition, i.e. without any mechanical breakdown after the 10 sequential cycles of cutting and healing indicates no aging of the AD-CF. The ability of AD-CF to exhibit a soft state and rapid self-healing at room temperature makes it possible for much wider applications.

High Modulus Epoxy/GO-PANI Self-Healing Materials Without Catalyst by Molecular Engineering and Nanocomposite Fabrication

Geonwoo Kim,Cigdem Caglayan,Gun Jin Yun

Nowadays, self-healing materials have been studied actively in electronics, soft robotics, aerospace, and automobiles because they can prolong the life span of the materials. However, overcoming the trade-off relationship between mechanical properties and self-healing performance is challenging. Herein, graphene oxide-polyaniline (GO-PANI) filler was introduced to overcome this challenge because GO has a highly excellent modulus, and nitrogen atoms in PANI can endow a self-healing ability through hydrogen bonds. Aside from the hydrogen bond in PANI, the hydrogen bond in the carbonyl group and the disulfide exchange bond in the epoxy matrix also helped the materials heal efficiently. Therefore, the modulus of SV-GPN1 (Self-healing Vitrimer-GO-PANI1) reached 770 MPa, and a 65.0% healing efficiency was demonstrated. The modulus and self-healing efficiency were enhanced after adding GO-PANI filler. The self-healing ability, however, deteriorated when adding more GO-PANI filler because it hindered the collision between the molecules. Meanwhile, SV-GPN1 was excellent in reproducibility, which was proven by the experiment that 16.50 mm thick SV-GPN1 also displayed a self-healing ability. Thus, SV-GPN1 can be applied to structural materials in industries like aerospace because of its self-healing ability, excellent modulus, and reproducibility.

Effect of failure modes on healing behavior and multiple healing capability of self-healing polyurethanes

Libang Feng,Zhengyang Yu,Yaohui Bian,Yanping Wang,Yanhua Zhao,Liuxiaohui Gou

Materials can suffer from different damages in actual application. Consequently, diversified failure modes can be caused, while different failures may have unalike repairing effect. Thereupon, it is quite important of exploring the effect of failure modes on the repairing behavior of self-healing materials. Herein, a kind of thermoplastic polyurethane containing Diels-Alder bonds (PU-DA) has been synthesized successfully. Based on the dual actions of thermo-reversible Diels-Alder reaction and molecular movement, the as-prepared polyurethane exhibits excellent self-healing performance. The repairing behavior of polyurethanes with different failure modes has been investigated both qualitatively and quantitatively. Results show that polyurethanes with various cracks can be repaired. However, PU-DA film with shallower crack exhibits a high healing efficiency as compared to that with deeper crack at the similar heat treatment. Meanwhile, polyurethane has multiple healing capability and cracks can be caused and repaired repeatedly. Additionally, PU-DA fragments can recombine together as a whole even after destroyed by tearing, indicating PU-DA also exhibits outstanding reprocessing capability. The research can lay foundation for realizing the favorable repairing of various failure modes, and further promote self-healing materials and technology applied into practice.

Reinforcement of Self-Healing Polyacrylic Acid Hydrogel with Acrylamide Modified Microcrystalline Cellulose†

Changzhuang Bai,Qiuhua Huang,Xiaopeng Xiong

Summary of main observation and conclusion Self-healing hydrogel such as polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel has attracted increasing attention based on its promising potential applications. However, it usually suffers from low strength especially as mechanical device. Herein, a commercial microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was modified with acrylamide to graft polyacrylamide (PAM) chains on the particle surface. The acrylamide-modified MCC (AM-MCC) was then dispersed in monomer solution of acrylic acid to prepare composite hydrogel. The mechanical properties of the obtained composite hydrogels and the self-healed hydrogels were carefully measured by compressive and tensile tests, and by dynamic mechanical analysis. Our results demonstrate that introduction of a small amount of AM-MCC such as 3 wt% can not only reinforce the original hydrogel and the healed hydrogel markedly, but also improve self-healing efficiency obviously. The analyses indicate that in addition to the reversible multi-interactions such as hydrogen bonding and ionic interactions, the entanglements between the PAA chains of the hydrogel matrix and the PAM chains grafted on the MCC particles have also played an important role on the improvement in mechanical performances and the healing ability of the hydrogel. Moreover, the responsiveness to exterior ion has been tested to indicate potential application of the composite hydrogel as self-healable sensor.

The Addition of an Ultra-Small Amount of Black Phosphorous Quantum Dots Endow Self-Healing Polyurethane with a Biomimetic Intelligent Response

Jia-Hui Zhong,Yan Zhou,Xin-Xin Tian,Ying-Lu Sun,Bi-Ru Shi,Zhen-Yu Zhang,Wen-Hua Zhang,Xiang-Dong Liu,Yu-Ming Yang

This study explores new applications of black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) by adding them to self-healing material systems for the first time. Self-healing polyurethane with an ultra-small amount of BPQDs has biomimetic intelligent responsiveness and achieves balance between its mechanical and self-healing properties. By adding 0.0001 wt% BPQDs to self-healing polyurethane, the fracture strength of the material increases from 3.0 to 12.3 MPa, and the elongation at break also increases from 750% to 860%. Meanwhile, the self-healing efficiency remains at 98%. The addition of BPQDs significantly improves the deformation recovery ability of the composite materials and transforms the surface of self-healing polyurethane from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, making it suitable for applications in fields such as electronic skin and flexible wearable devices. This study provides a simple and feasible strategy for endowing self-healing materials with biomimetic intelligent responsiveness using a small amount of BPQDs.
