Smart sensing hydrogel actuators conferred by MXene gradient arrangement

Jiazhou Zeng,Xin Jing,Liya Lin,Gangrong Wang,Yaoxun Zhang,Peiyong Feng

Smart sensing and excellent actuation abilities of natural organisms have driven scientists to develop bionic soft-bodied robots. However, most conventional robots suffer from poor electrical conductivity, limiting their application in real-time sensing and actuation. Here, we report a novel strategy to enhance the electrical conductivity of hydrogels that integrated actuation and strain-sensing functions for bioinspired self-sensing soft actuators. Conductive hydrogels were synthesized in situ by copolymerizing MXene nanosheets with thermosensitive N -isopropylacrylamide and acrylamide under a direct current electric field. The resulting hydrogels exhibited high electrical conductivity (2.11 mS/cm), good sensitivity with a gauge factor of 4.79 and long-term stability. The developed hydrogels demonstrated remarkable capabilities in detecting human motions at subtle strains such as facial expressions and large strains such as knee bending. Additionally, the hydrogel electrode patch was capable of monitoring physiological signals. Furthermore, the developed hydrogel showed good thermally induced actuation effects when the temperature was higher than 30 °C. Overall, this work provided new insights for the design of sensory materials with integrated self-sensing and actuation capabilities, which would pave the way for the development of high-performance conductive soft materials for intelligent soft robots and automated machinery.

Jigang Du,Yang Zhang,Xubing Wu,Wei Li,Bingxue Jiang,Song Wang,Khak Ho Lim,Qingyue Wang,Pei Zhao,Wen-Jun Wang,Pingwei Liu

Embedding the capability of self-sensing to polymeric materials provides tremendous opportunities for developing smart materials with highly important applications. However, a facile method that can introduce this capability to different polymers beyond strain sensing remains elusive. Here, we report a strategy of incorporating a continuous graphene sheet as an electric probe into polymer matrices for developing self-sensing composites. The resulted composite demonstrates impressively high conductivities of 290 S/m at a graphene volume fraction ( V G ) of 0.00068, a good electrical recovery at a cyclic elastic strain of 30% and a strain-sensing upper limit of 80%. Moreover, the glass transition, melting, and photodegradation process of different polymers can also be monitored in situ , and the corresponding glass transition temperature ( T g ) and melting point ( T m ) can be calculated. Our work paves the way for the development and application of novel self-sensing polymer composites with high sensitivity and versatility based on two-dimensional (2D) materials.

Nanocellulose-assisted construction of conductive gradient hydrogel for remote actuated and self-sensing soft actuator

Ya Lu,Shengnan Li,Yuanyuan Ma,Fang Deng,Yiying Yue,Shaohua Jiang,Mingqiang Ye,Yihui Zhou,Huining Xiao,Jingquan Han

Hydrogel actuators show tremendous promise for applications in soft robots and artificial muscles. Nevertheless, developing a stretchable hydrogel actuator combining remote actuation and real-time signal feedback remains a challenge. Herein, a light-responsive hydrogel actuator with self-sensing function is fabricated by employing a localized immersion strategy to incorporate polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel network into semi-interpenetrating carbon nanotube/2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofiber/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (CNT/TOCN/PNIPAM) hydrogel. CNTs impart photothermal response and electrical conductivity to the hydrogels. TOCNs facilitate the dispersion of CNTs and improve the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. The introduction of PAM further reinforces the mechanical strength and promotes the formation of gradient structure, which can prevent interlayer separation during the actuating process. The optimized CNT/TOCN/PNIPAM-PAM hydrogel actuator with enhanced tensile strength (53.0 kPa), stretchability (131.1 %), conductivity (2.5 S m −1 ) and reversible near-infrared (NIR) light responsiveness (bending velocity 6.25° s −1 ) enables a variety of precise and remote light-responsive deformations. The conductive hydrogel-based strain sensor with high sensitivity (gauge factor, 3.6) can rapidly and accurately identify various human movements. Notably, the hydrogel can perceive its actions driven by NIR light through real-time resistance changes, realizing closed-loop monitoring and sensing feedback, which provided new insights for novel soft biomimetic actuating materials and integrated multi-functional devices.

A Proprioceptive Janus Fiber with Controllable Multistage Segments for Bionic Soft Robots

Hao Zhu,Tie Li,Lei Fu,Ju Bai,Shengzhao Li,Yuanyuan Bai,Shihao Deng,Shen Yuan,Qianzuo Liu,Yunping Ma,Lu Peng,Jingyi Xu,Nan Ma,Guanggui Cheng,Jianning Ding,Ting Zhang

Smart fibers capable of integrating the multifunctionality of actuation and self-sensation into a single proprioceptive device have significant applications in soft robots and biomedicine. Especially, the achievement of self-sensing the movement patterns of different actuating segments in one fiber is still a great challenge. Herein, in this study, a fiber with the controllable Janus architecture is successfully proposed via an artful centrifugation-driven hierarchical gradient self-assembly strategy, which couples two functional components of piezoresistive carbon nanotubes and magnetic NdFeB nanoparticles into the upper and lower layers of this flexible fibrous framework with the porous sponge structure partially, respectively. As predicted, the final product exhibits the as-anticipated bionic proprioceptive behaviors of programmable actuating deformation and highly selective response to bending, stretching, and pressure with high washable stability and mechanical performances. More importantly, assisted by the different three-dimensional printing molds, the superlong Janus fibers with various controllable lengths of the reversed but sequential multistage segments can be fabricated, offering the hybrid magnetic actuation and proprioceptive sensation existing at arbitrary nodes. Therefore, several kinds of soft organism-inspired Janus fiber-derived soft robots with the arbitrarily controlled segmental characters were assembled as the proof-of-concept, which can not only realize a snake or inchworm-inspired successive contracting-stretching deformation and a sperm-inspired self-rotating crawling motion but also self-sense the signals of each segment themselves in real time and then be used to navigate an object to target position in a liquid-filled confined tube. It is believed that this work promotes the further development of proprioceptive soft robots.

Intrinsically piezoelectric elastomer based on crosslinked polyacrylonitrile for soft electronics

Rumin Fu,Lingjie Tu,Youjun Guan,Zhengao Wang,Chunlin Deng,Peng Yu,Guoxin Tan,Chengyun Ning,Lei Zhou

Soft and elastic piezoelectric materials have critical applications in emerging fields such as wearable electronics and soft robotics. Although there is much progress towards piezoelectric elastomers , existing methods to achieve such materials rely mainly on blending piezoelectric ceramic or polymer fillers into elastomers. Here, we report a soft tissue-like polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based piezoelectric elastomer, which shows a high piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of ∼ 40 pC/N and an intrinsic super-elasticity (100 % self-recovery). Moreover, ultrahigh compressibility (> 99 % strain) and stretchability (> 250 % strain) are achieved simultaneously for the elastomer. The elastomer can produce long-term stable electrical outputs and exhibit a fast piezoelectric response and high sensitivity due to the stress-induced poling effect. We proceed to demonstrate that the piezoelectric elastomers can be used for simultaneous impact protection and self-sensing, as well as continuous human pulse and complex hand movements monitoring. These results suggest that the material has potential applications for soft electronics.

NIR responsive and conductive PNIPAM/PANI nanocomposite hydrogels with high stretchability for self-sensing actuators

Changhao Qian,Yueqin Li,Lingke Liu,Chen Chen,Lin Han

Integration of mechanical and actuation properties with sensory feedback function in soft actuators remains a challenge. Herein, a highly stretchable and electrically conductive hydrogel with fast stimuli-responsive actuating performance is prepared by in situ growth of polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles in the Pluronic F127 diacrylate (F127DA) cross-linked poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel matrix. The obtained PNIPAM/PANI hydrogel exhibits high stretchability (730%) and fast deswelling properties upon heating. Taking advantage of highly efficient photothermal conversion of the embedding PANI, this hydrogel shows a significant temperature rise of ∼50 °C within 150 s and large volume shrinkage of 65% upon near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. Accordingly, the hydrogel is explored as an underwater actuator, which has achieved programmable deformations to simulate hand-like gestures and Venus flytrap-type locomotion under local NIR irradiation. In addition, the hydrogel is able to translate the local strain into electrical signals. The light-triggered actuation, including bending, weight lifting and moving objects can be monitored by real-time resistance change. These results confirm that actuating and real-time sensory feedback could be integrated in a single homogeneous material, which make it an outstanding candidate in soft actuators and even intelligent biomimetic devices.

Nanocellulose-mediated bilayer hydrogel actuators with thermo-responsive, shape memory and self-sensing performances

Yuanyuan Ma,Ya Lu,Yiying Yue,Shuijian He,Shaohua Jiang,Changtong Mei,Xinwu Xu,Qinglin Wu,Huining Xiao,Jingquan Han

Inspired by creatures, abundant stimulus-responsive hydrogel actuators with diverse functionalities have been manufactured for applications in soft robotics. However, constructing a shape memory and self-sensing bilayer hydrogel actuator with high mechanical strength and strong interfacial bonding still remains a challenge. Herein, a novel bilayer hydrogel with a stimulus-responsive TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (TOCN/PNIPAM) layer and a non-responsive TOCN/polyacrylamide (TOCN/PAM) layer is proposed as a thermosensitive actuator. TOCNs as a nano-reinforced phase provide a high mechanical strength and endow the hydrogel actuator with a strong interfacial bonding. Due to the incorporation of TOCNs, the TOCN/PNIPAM hydrogel exhibits a high compressive strength (~89.2 kPa), elongation at break (~170.7 %) and tensile strength (~24.0 kPa). The prepared PNIPAM/TOCN/PAM hydrogel actuator performs the roles of an encapsulation, jack, temperature-controlled fluid valve and temperature-control manipulator. The incorporation of Fe 3+ further endows the bilayer hydrogel actuator with a synergistic performance of shape memory and temperature-driven, which can be used as a temperature-responsive switch to detect ambient temperature. The PNIPAM/TOCN/PAM-Fe 3+ conductive hydrogel can be assembled into a flexible sensor and generate sensing signals when driven by temperature changes to achieve real-time feedback. This research may lead to new insights into the design and manufacturing of intelligent flexible soft robots.

A biomimetic, multifunctional, superhydrophobic graphene film with self-sensing and fast recovery properties for microdroplet transportation

Guomin Ding,Weicheng Jiao,Rongguo Wang,Yue Niu,Lifeng Hao,Fan Yang,Wenbo Liu

Recently, multifunctional superhydrophobic surfaces with high adhesion behavior have attracted much attention for microdroplet transportation. Here, we report for the first time a multifunctional, rose-petal-like, superhydrophobic graphene film via the self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) that has self-sensing and fast recovery properties for microdroplet transportation. This superhydrophobic film does not require a hydrophobic coating and has a micro-nanoscale hierarchical structure. Because of its structure, our biomimetic, superhydrophobic film has high adhesive force to water droplets and can be used as a medium for microdroplet transportation. In addition, because the film was constructed using pure graphene, it has excellent conductivity properties and an immediate response system is also built to detect potential damage. Moreover, owing to the gas sensing properties of graphene, our film has self-sensing properties where the resistance of the film increases gradually when water droplets are close to it. What's more, the film has an ultra-fast Joule heating rate of 18 °C s−1. Based on these properties, the recovery time for the resistance of the film can be reduced by 57.7% for water droplet transportation. Therefore, our multifunctional, superhydrophobic graphene film can be used for smart microdroplet manipulation in the future.

Self-sensing coaxial muscle fibers with bi-lengthwise actuation

Lizhong Dong,Ming Ren,Yulian Wang,Jian Qiao,Yulong Wu,Jianfeng He,Xulin Wei,Jiangtao Di,Qingwen Li

Artificial muscle fibers as a promising biomimetic actuator are needed for such applications as smart soft robots, muscle function restoration, and physical augmentation. Currently developed artificial muscle fibers have shown attractive performance in contractile and torsional actuations. However, the contractile muscle fibers do not have the capability of stimulus-responsive elongation, and real-time identifying their contractile position by themselves is still challenging. We report herein the preparation of a Ti3C2Tx MXene/single walled carbon-nanotubes (SWCNTs)-coated carbon nanotube (CNT)@polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coaxial muscle fiber that integrates the important features of self-position sensing and bi-lengthwise actuation. The bi-lengthwise actuation is realized by utilizing the large expansion coefficient difference of PDMS in response to solvent and heat, which results in ∼5% maximum elongation by n-heptane adsorption and ∼19% maximum contraction by electric heating under the optimal conditions. Meanwhile, due to the piezoresistive effect of the MXene/SWCNTs layer, the resistance change of this coating layer is almost linearly dependent on the contraction of the coaxial muscle fiber, providing a function of real-time self-position sensing. Furthermore, an application of using a bundle of these multifunctional coaxial muscle fibers for a bionic arm has been demonstrated, which provides new insights into the design of integrated intelligent artificial muscles with synergistic multiple functions.

Asymmetric bilayer CNTs-elastomer/hydrogel composite as soft actuators with sensing performance

Huijing Li,Yun Liang,Guorong Gao,Shuxin Wei,Yukun Jian,Xiaoxia Le,Wei Lu,Qingquan Liu,Jiawei Zhang,Tao Chen

Living creatures have the nature of actuating and sensing under external stimuli to better adapt to the environment. For instance, the combination of muscles actuation and skin sensing ensures our intelligent interaction with external environments. In terms of the soft robot, implanting sensation and actuation in one system can assist us to control it better and more efficiently. However, in the development of biomimetic materials, the simultaneous realization of actuating and sensing performance in bionic soft robots is still a great challenge. Here, we propose a novel asymmetric bilayer CNTs-elastomer/PNIPAm hydrogel composite with integrated actuating and sensing performances. Due to the excellent photothermal effect of CNTs and thermo-responsiveness of PNIPAm, under the NIR irradiation, the PNIPAm hydrogel layer would shrink and the bilayer composite would thus perform a bending deformation. At the same time, based on a piezoresistive sensing mechanism of the CNTs-elastomer, the actuating procedure can be recorded. This work may open up a new insight in the designing and fabricating intelligent biomimetic hydrogel soft robots with integrated self-sensing capacity.

Simultaneous enhancement of mechanical robustness and self-sensing performance in fly ash-based geopolymer nanocomposites

Hailong Hu,Yefan Liu,Lei Chen,Fan Zhang

The simultaneous enhancement of both mechanical robustness and self-sensing capabilities in geopolymer nanocomposites significantly advances the precision and dependability of structural health monitoring systems. In this study, the uniform dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) within fly ash-based geopolymer composites is successfully achieved through the in-situ chemical synthesis of a silica (SiO 2 ) coating on the GNP surface. The resulting composite material exhibits a significant enhancement in sensitivity, which is attributed to the presence of the SiO 2 coating on the GNPs. In comparison to uncoated GNP/geopolymer composites, varying the concentration of the precursor tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) from 0 to 8 ml enables the formation of SiO 2 coatings with different thicknesses, which effectively modulates the resistivity of the composite to meet specific sensing application requirements. The self-sensing sensitivity of the composite shows a considerable increase of 479.7 %, accompanied by a concurrent 89.1 % increase in elastic modulus. Notably, the gauge factor (GF) of geopolymer composites reached up to 491, which surpasses the results reported in recent literatures. The underlying mechanism suggests the in-situ SiO 2 coating significantly enhances the composite’s sensitivity and mechanical properties by improving the interface bonding between GNP and the geopolymer matrix, acting as a dielectric layer to reduce direct contact and particle agglomeration, and exhibiting excellent chemical and thermal stability. This advancement holds paramount importance in mitigating risks associated with structural failures, prolonging the operational lifespan of critical infrastructure, and ultimately improving public safety standards.
