Biofilms are known to be difficult to eradicate and control, complicating human infections and marine biofouling. In this study, self-polishing and anti-fouling waterborne polyurethane coatings synthesized from gemini quaternary ammonium salts (GQAS), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polycaprolactone diol (PCL) demonstrate excellent antibiofilm efficacy. Their anti-fouling and anti-biofilm performance was confirmed by a culture-based method in broth media, with the biofilm formation factor against Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative bacterial strains (E. coli) for 2 days. The results indicate that polyurethane coatings have excellent anti-biofilm activity when the content of GQAS reached 8.5 wt% againstS. aureus, and 15.8 wt% againstE. coli. The resulting waterborne polyurethane coatings demonstrate both hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation, and the surface erosion enzymatic degradation mechanism enables them with good self-polishing capability. The extracts cyto-toxicity of these polyurethane coatings and degradation liquids was also systematically studied; they could be degraded to non-toxic or low toxic compositions. This study shows the possibility to achieve potent self-polishing and anti-biofilm efficacy by integrating antibacterial GQAS, PEG, and PCL into waterborne polyurethane coatings.Keywords:anti-fouling;anti-biofilm;self-polishing;waterborne polyurethane

Traditional self-polishing marine antifouling coatings are mainly based on thermoplastic acrylic resins and polyurethanes, seawater degradable thermosetting resins are rarely reported. Here, we synthesized a seawater degradable epoxy resin (DIGE) containing pyrrolidone structure as the film former. The degradation rate and antifoulant releasing rate of the antifouling coatings (DIGE-EPs) were controlled by compounding DIGE with the commercial epoxy resin E51 in various mass ratios. The hydrolysis of pyrrolidone structure by ring-opening in weakly alkaline environment increased the hydrophilicity and influenced the electron density of neighboring ester bond electron clouds, which enhanced the hydrolysis of ester bonds. This allowed for the formation of a self-renewing surface. This degradation process was well monitored by surface topography, surface roughness, mass loss and surface water contact angle in the artificial seawater conditions. Antimicrobial tests revealed that DIGE-EP coatings maintained efficient antibacterial properties even after two months of hydrolysis, with the bactericidal rate reaching 99.7 % and 99.9 % against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. In addition to the role of antifouling agent release from the inside of resin matrix, more importantly, it was related to the intrinsic antifouling property of the resin, resulting from the in-situ formed β-amino alcohol structure during curing and its nice hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the coating had excellent film properties, along with adhesion exceeding 8 MPa and impact strength reaching 90 kg·cm, which met the long-term use requirements. These combined advantages provide valuable insights for developing effective solutions to complex marine biofouling challenges.

Ships and underwater facilities suffer from marine biofouling, which causes great harm. The most effective method against biofouling is to use self-polishing antifouling coatings. However, traditional coatings achieve antifouling performance by releasing toxic heavy metal antifouling agents , causing ecological problems. To solve this contradiction, a self-polishing antifouling coating polymer based on eugenol methacrylate was prepared. The hydrolysis of phenolic ester group realizes the transformation of resin segment from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity . The self-polishing process releases eugenol , which is natural and non-toxic into seawater . It is the first time when self-polishing coating polymer achieves self-polishing by hydrolysis of phenolic ester groups and release of natural phenolic products. Eugenol release rate was the fastest at the beginning of immersion of the coating, reaching 0.48 μg·cm −2 ·day −1 for EMFP-25. After immersion in artificial seawater for 15 days, the release rate of eugenol from the coating tends to be stable, and the EMFP-25 with the highest release rate can reach 0.14 μg·cm −2 ·day −1 . The resin has good antibacterial and anti-algae properties, and the mussel attachment experiments show that mussels have a tendency to avoid resin coatings with high eugenol content.

Corrosion susceptibility is a critical obstacle for Mg alloy usage in harsh environments. Bioinspired superhydrophobic surface (SHS) affords a new way to combat corrosion. However, problems, e.g., water vapor condensation and air dissolution, ceaselessly hurdle practical usage of SHS for long-term corrosion inhibition . In this report, targeting the corrosion inhibition of Mg alloy in seawater , a refreshable self-polishing superhydrophobic coating is bound onto AZ31 Mg alloy bridging via a ceramic/paraffin buffer layer to solve the two problems encountered by traditional SHS. Firstly, the liquid paraffin is injected into the porous ceramic structure constructed by micro-arc oxidation (MAO). Then, carbon soot (CS) is grown onto the ceramic/paraffin layer via a combustion method. The internal CS layer is firmly bonded due to the molten paraffin. Meanwhile, the external superhydrophobic CS layer is soft and floppy to perform self-polishing property under dynamic water flow condition. The refreshable feature endows the regeneration of SHS. Using water jet flush (5.8 m/s) and immersion test up to 168 h, Mg alloy covered ceramic layer and carbon soot (MMAO-CS) coating demonstrates excellent stability. Using diatoms as target organisms to illustrate seawater anti-biofouling property, a few diatoms are found on MMAO-CS even after immersion for 10 d due to the low modulus and self-polishing of the external superhydrophobic layer invaded by the water phase and bio-organisms. For prohibiting corrosion in seawater environment, MMAO-CS coating possesses prominent resistance with |Z| 0.01 Hz (2.82 ×10 7 Ω cm 2 ) of 6 orders of magnitude larger than bare AZ31 (42.9 Ω cm 2 ), enabling its potential usage in marine environment.

Traditional self-polishing antifouling coatings kill surface organisms by releasing toxic substances, which are damaging to the ecosystem. As a natural antimicrobial substance, eugenol is environmentally friendly and has been proven by different research teams to be effective in enhancing the anti-fouling effect of coatings in the real sea. While in these previous research works, the eugenol was released directly into the seawater thus cannot further serve as surface antifouling effect, leading to a limited antifouling effect of the coating. In this work, the quaternary ammonium component was introduced into the butyl ester-based resin - poly (eugenol methacrylate - acryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride - hexafluorobutyl methacrylate - methyl methacrylate - butyl methacrylate - ethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate) (EMQFP) coating for the first time by simple one-step free radical polymerization method. On the one hand, the eugenol produced by hydrolysis is anchored to the quaternary ammonium on the coating surface for a period of time due to the cationic-π interaction, instead of being released into seawater immediately after hydrolysis, thus increasing the utilization rate of eugenol; on the other hand, the negatively charged carboxylate groups generated after hydrolysis in the coating are mutually attracted to quaternary ammonium through electrostatic effect, so the resin chain segment conformation on the coating surface adjusted to produce zwitterionic-like structure, and the hydration of zwitterionic inhibits primary fouling adhesion.

The demand for non-toxic antifouling coatings has led to the development of multifunctional antifouling coatings. In this work, a series of coumarin acids with fluorescence were first prepared via the Knoevenagel condensation reaction . Then, multifunctional zinc acrylate resins were produced successfully by employing an acrylic acid monomer , ZnO, and coumarin acids by free radical polymerization and polycondensation processes. The self-polishing and antifouling properties of the resins were investigated by dynamic simulation experiments, E. coli growth inhibition experiments, algae adhesion inhibition experiments, and marine environment antifouling experiments. The results show that the zinc acrylate resins containing the coumarin structures not only have good self-polishing performance but also have better antifouling performances than the zinc acrylate resin containing benzoic acid . This work not only reveals the antifouling mechanism of the multifunctional resins, but also provides a new strategy for the development of environmentally friendly antifouling coatings.

New acrylate grafting epoxy antifouling resins containing benzoisothiazoline ketone (BIT) group were successfully synthesized, and their structures and performances were determined. Experimental data indicated that the new acrylate grafting epoxy antifouling resins have a strong bonding to the cured epoxy resin coating through chemical reaction and self-stratifying. And the paint prepared by using the new resin as matrix has excellent self-polishing and antifouling properties. Especially its antifouling period could be modified by changing the weight ratio of the usage of the mixed monomers and epoxy resin in the preparing process of the acrylate grafting epoxy antifouling resins.

Currently, it is highly desirable to develop a novel antifouling resin with a controllable hydrolysis rate and stable and effective antifouling performance for marine antifouling coatings. In our study, we prepared natural rosin-based zinc (RZn-x) resins by a relatively facile and green synthetic method from Zn(OH) 2 and antimicrobial natural rosin, which is considered a toxicity-free raw material, thus ensuring the green and antimicrobial character of the material. In their optimal combination, the RZn-x coating surface exhibited ideal peeling behaviour upon immersion in seawater, which caused the WCA of the material surface to change from 55° before immersion to 135° after immersion for 60 days and enhanced the antifouling properties. Dynamic simulation experiments of these resins also demonstrated that the hydrolysis rate of this material immersed in dynamic seawater was related to the zinc content, and we could control the self-polishing ability of the resins by adjusting the content of Zn(OH) 2 participating in the reaction. Moreover, hydrolysis led to a hydrophobic surface, which could prevent fouling organisms from adhering. Laboratory bioassays against BSA adsorption (immersed for 4 h: 1.986 μg/cm 2 ), bacterial (over 95 % reduction) and marine algal adhesion (more than 60 % reduction) revealed outstanding anti-protein, bacteriostasis and anti-algal growth and adhesion properties compared to pure rosin and the control sample. The long-term antifouling capability in marine field tests indicated that the RZn-x resins maintained their antifouling activity for more than 6 months, especially RZn-50, which showed excellent antifouling performance.

Marine biofouling is detrimental to ships and has been a significant issue in the marine industry for several decades. The development of effective, long-term, and environment-friendly antifouling coating is important but remains a challenge in oceanographic engineering. A series of novel amphiphilic block copolymers (PVP- co -PTFEMA), containing hydrophilic segments (N-vinylpyrrolidone, or NVP) and hydrophobic segments (trifluoromethyl methacrylate, or TFEMA), are grafted on the nanosilica surface via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The as-prepared amphiphilic copolymers-functionalized silica , SiO 2 - g -(PVP- co -PTFEMA), can be blended well with self-polishing resin, which could obtain a new type of self-polishing nanocomposite coating. The SiO 2 - g -(PVP- co -PTFEMA) based composite coating exhibits satisfactory antibacterial and antifouling properties due to the synergistic effect of a strong hydration layer of hydrophilic NVP fragments and low adhesion of hydrophobic TFEMA unit. The slow hydrolysis of the as-prepared self-polishing nanocomposite coating results in the formation of micro/nano structures due to the exposure of SiO 2 - g -(PVP- co -PTFEMA) in seawater. Moreover, the SiO 2 - g -(PVP- co -PTFEMA) based nanocomposite coating exhibits high mechanical durability. The as-prepared self-polishing nanocomposite coating combines outstanding antifouling performance and high mechanical durability, which could be an ideal choice in marine antifouling applications.

The hydration layer and low elastic modulus of hydrogel give it great potential for application in the field of marine antifouling. The combination of hydrogel materials with self-polishing antifouling resins will endow the self-polishing antifouling resins with more antifouling mechanisms. In this study, a self-polishing antifouling resin coating which can form hydrogel microlayer in water was prepared, and the structure of hydrogel microlayer was adjusted by adjusting the content of self-crosslinking monomer N-hydroxymethacrylamide (HAM). With the increase of HAM content, the hydrogel microlayer is more obvious. Meanwhile, the formation of hydrogel microlayer made the resin coating have better antifouling performance: the water-based self-polishing resin coating (HAM3) with significant hydrogel microlayers reduced the relative adsorption area of proteins from 41.48 % to 9.56 %, in comparison to the TIPSMA5 coating with an insignificant hydrogel microlayer, and the more obvious the hydrogel layer, the less number of algae attached to resin coating (The minimum attached number of Chlorella was 7.6 × 10 2 /mm 2 and Nitzschia closterium was 6.1 × 10 2 /mm 2 ). The construction and reinforcement of the hydrogel microlayer enabled the coating to exhibit a slow release of the antifouling agent 4, 5-dichloro-2-octylisothiazolinone (The antifouling agent release rate of the HAM3 coating was reduced from 1.0 μg·cm −2 ·d −1 for the TIPSMA5 coating to 0.15 μg·cm −2 ·d −1 ), and the hydrogel microlayer also enabled the resin coating to exhibit good drag-reducing properties. The water-based self-polishing antifouling resin, capable of forming hydrogel microlayers, is of considerable importance for enhancing the performance of water-based antifouling coatings and reducing the cost of coatings.

Fluorescent antifouling is a method that utilizes substances fluorescent repellent effect to prevent organisms attachment and fouling. It is considered one of the directions for developing environmentally friendly marine antifouling materials. The current fluorescent antifouling materials were characterized by issues such as single functionality, unclear antifouling mechanisms, and suboptimal antifouling performance. In this study, three carbazole derivatives containing carbon–carbon double bonds were synthesized by Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction, and a series of zinc acrylate resins containing carbazole derivative structures were further synthesized through free radical polymerization. Three carbazole derivatives were tested for their fluorescence and their growth inhibition properties against bacteria and algae. The results showed that the three carbazole derivatives not only had high fluorescence intensity, but also had good inhibitory effects on bacteria and algae, with the highest inhibition rate of 81% on algae. The fluorescence properties, algal inhibition properties and anti-algal adhesion properties of the resin were investigated. The results showed that the fluorescence intensity of the resin was enhanced with the increase of carbazole derivative content. The inhibition rate of the resin against algae was as high as 88.5%, and the anti-algal adhesion rate of the resin was improved under light conditions. Mechanistic studies showed that the resin influenced the cell wall, and the fluorescence caused the algae to prioritize photosynthesis rather than attachment and settlement. Self-polishing performance test results showed that the introduction of carbazole derivatives improved the stability of the resin. The results of the real sea antifouling test show that the resin integrates fluorescence, chemical activity and self-polishing, and has excellent antifouling performance. This provides a theoretical basis for the development of environmentally friendly marine antifouling materials.

An indole derivative containing a carbon-carbon double bond was purposefully synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction based on 6-chlorine-1 H -indole and characterized by IR, 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR. Antibacterial and inhibiting algae attachment experiments were carried out on the indole derivative. The indole derivative was indicated to have good antibacterial and algae inhibiting properties, then, was introduced into acrylic metal salt resin. Multifunctional acrylic metal salt resins were synthesized via free radical polymerization and polycondensation reactions using acrylic monomers, the indole derivative, metal salts and naphthenic acid. The synthesized resins were characterized by IR and 1 H NMR, and the results showed that these target products were successfully synthesized.
