Self-Stretchable Fiber Liquid Sensors Made with Bacterial Cellulose/Carbon Nanotubes for Smart Diapers

Qianqian Liang,Dong Zhang,Yuchen Wu,Shiyan Chen,Zhiliang Han,Baoxiu Wang,Huaping Wang

Liquid sensors for detecting water and body fluids are crucial in daily water usage and health monitoring, but it is challenging to combine sensing performance with high tensile deformation and multifunctional applications. Here, a substrate-free, self-stretchable bacterial cellulose (BC)/carbon nanotube (CNT) helical fiber liquid sensor was prepared by the solution spinning and coiling process using BC as the water-sensitive matrix and CNTs as the active sensing materials. The BC/CNT (BCT) fiber sensor has a high stretch ratio of more than 1000% and a rapid response for a current change rate of 104% within 1 s, which is almost unaffected under washing and various stretching or knotting deformations. By combination of the BCT fiber, we can design smart diapers or water level detectors, which rapidly monitor the status of smart diapers or water level, and the monitoring result can be transferred on time through an alarm device or smartphone. In short, the scalable and continuous preparation of the self-stretchable BCT helical fiber will provide a capacious platform for the development of a wearable sensor applied in daily life (such as smart diapers, water level detection, etc.)

Continuous and integrated PEDOT@Bacterial cellulose/CNT hybrid helical fiber with “reinforced cement-sand” structure for self-stretchable solid supercapacitor

Qianqian Liang,Jia Wan,Peng Ji,Dong Zhang,Nan Sheng,Shiyan Chen,Huaping Wang

As the demand for wearable electronic devices persistent to booming, the stretchability of supercapacitors is essential. However, it is still challenging in preparing fiber-based stretchable supercapacitors with the self-stretchable structure instead of relying on an elastic matrix. Here, we constructed a self-stretchable poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT)@bacterial cellulose(BC)/Carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid helical fiber with “reinforced cement-sand” structure through wet-spinning and coiling processes by using dissolved BC as bonded matrix, undissolved BC nanofibers and CNT as supporters, PEDOT as reinforcements materials. This structure avoids the disadvantage of relying on the elastic matrix or auxiliary materials to provide elasticity. More importantly, the helical fiber can exhibit the ultimate stretch of 1175%, and the cyclic tests demonstrate the remarkable cycle stability after 100 times of 100% cyclic stretching. Meanwhile, the self-stretchable PEDOT@BC 1 /CNT 2 hybrid helical fiber electrodes show a gravimetric specific capacitance as high as 175.1F/g, which can remain stable under different bending degrees and tensile strains. The energy density and power density of the solid supercapacitor can reach 4.0 Wh/kg and 120.1 W/kg, respectively. This work provides a new strategy of stretchable supercapacitors independent of elastic materials, which will show wide application prospects in wearable electronic products.

Protein fibers with self-recoverable mechanical properties via dynamic imine chemistry

Sun Jing,He Haonan,Zhao Kelu,Cheng Wenhao,Li Yuanxin,Zhang Peng,Wan Sikang,Liu Yawei,Wang Mengyao,Li Ming,Wei Zheng,Li Bo,Zhang Yi,Li Cong,Sun Yao,Shen Jianlei,Li Jingjing,Wang Fan,Ma Chao,Tian Yang,Su Juanjuan,Chen Dong,Fan Chunhai,Zhang Hongjie,Liu Kai

The manipulation of internal interactions at the molecular level within biological fibers is of particular importance but challenging, severely limiting their tunability in macroscopic performances and applications. It thus becomes imperative to explore new approaches to enhance biological fibers’ stability and environmental tolerance and to impart them with diverse functionalities, such as mechanical recoverability and stimulus-triggered responses. Herein, we develop a dynamic imine fiber chemistry (DIFC) approach to engineer molecular interactions to fabricate strong and tough protein fibers with recoverability and actuating behaviors. The resulting DIF fibers exhibit extraordinary mechanical performances, outperforming many recombinant silks and synthetic polymer fibers. Remarkably, impaired DIF fibers caused by fatigue or strong acid treatment are quickly recovered in water directed by the DIFC strategy. Reproducible mechanical performance is thus observed. The DIF fibers also exhibit exotic mechanical stability at extreme temperatures (e.g., −196 °C and 150 °C). When triggered by humidity, the DIFC endows the protein fibers with diverse actuation behaviors, such as self-folding, self-stretching, and self-contracting. Therefore, the established DIFC represents an alternative strategy to strengthen biological fibers and may pave the way for their high-tech applications.
