Multifunctional polymeric micelles, which possess capabilities for tracking, bioimaging, stimuli-responsive drug release and tumor targeting, are essential in facilitating the effective delivery of anticancer drugs. Hence, a novel copolymer (CD-CS-Bio-TPAA, CCBT) was synthesized with biotin and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin conjugated chitosan as the hydrophilic segment and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) featured tetraphenylethene derivative (TPAA) as the hydrophobic segment. Interestingly, under acidic conditions, CCBT exhibited color-tunable AIE behavior as a result of the cleavage of benzoic imine bonds in TPAA molecules, transitioning from red to yellow. Furthermore, CCBT could also self-assemble into polymeric micelles and be used as drug carriers to encapsulate paclitaxel (PTX) (PTX/CCBT PMs) for self-indicating cancer therapy. In vitro release experiments demonstrated that PTX/CCBT PMs could release drugs specifically under acidic conditions. Fluorescence imaging experiments demonstrated that CCBT PMs exhibited excellent cell imaging capabilities and could be tracked due to their unique color-changing behavior. Moreover, PTX/CCBT PMs exhibited notable cytotoxic effects on MCF-7 cells and showed selective internalization by MCF-7 cells through biotin receptor-mediated active targeting. In vivo antitumor experiments confirmed that PTX/CCBT PMs possessed remarkable tumor-inhibiting effects and low systemic toxicity. This work suggested that PTX/CCBT PMs provided new ideas for self-indicating breast cancer treatment.
A conventional theranostic system usually employs a single fluorescence channel to show the pharmacokinetic events, which usually fails to quantitatively reveal the true cumulative drug release and with low accuracy. Herein, indocyanine green (ICG) and chlorins e6 (Ce6) are selected not only as conventional photothermal/photodynamic agents, but also to offer two independent fluorescence channels to cross validate the authenticity of pharmacokinetic events and to quantitatively reveal cumulative drug release in tumor tissues in a “turn on” manner. Employing the Ca 2+ of amorphous calcium carbonate as a reversible linker, the photosensitivity and fluorescence of Ce6 are physically quenched by ICG during circulation to reduce the side effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) while being readily restored in tumor tissue to reveal the quantitative drug release. Most importantly, the combination of photothermal therapy (PTT) and PDT allows low-temperature synergistic therapy of cancer through the controlled expression of heat shock protein in cells and mild hyperthermia enhanced reactive oxygen species diffusion/penetration among cells. This work not only develops a facile approach to fabricate a dual-channel theranostic system to precisely indicate the accumulation and quantitative drug release in tumor tissue, but also presents a unique low-temperature synergistic strategy to destroy tumor in an effective and minimally invasive manner.

A durable and renewable superhydrophobic and superoleophilic poly(m-phenyleneisophthalamide)/silicon dioxide (PMIA/SiO2) membrane was prepared for oil/water separation in harsh conditions, the membrane have a self-indicating capacity when it is to become inoperable. Its nanoroot-shaped micro-nanostructure was achieved by covering each individual electrospun PMIA/SiO2 nanofiber with a dense silicone nanofilament layer to form a superhydrophobic surface, the water contact angle was more than 150°and the sliding angle was less than 1°. The porous nanofiber network served as a substrate to ensure the high absorption capacity of oils and oil/water separation efficiency, and increase the roughness for hydrophobicity . Its superhydrophobicity, high separation efficiency, and excellent stability and durability in oil/water separations under various extreme conditions, such as high temperature, acid/alkali solutions, and seawater for long periods can be preserved. This behavior is attributed to the robust micro-nanostructure, superior corrosion resistance , and excellent mechanical properties . Congo red in the PMIA substrate acts as a color indicator to indicate superhydrophobic surface failure, and the disabled material can be recovered absolutely by in-situ regrowth of silicone nanofilaments. This material is expected to become a highly effective renewable and sustainable material for oil-spill cleanup and recycle.
