Inspired by the swarming behavior of various bacteria in nature, light-driven micromotor with collective behavior has attracted a great deal of attention, which will be a valuable tool to understand the cooperation and communication between bacterial populations and will contribute to the creation of reconfigurable microrobots and the cooperative transportation of large cargoes. However, it is still challenging to modulate the micromotors’ collective behavior based on local interaction and communication. Herein, we develop a light-powered BiVO 4 -based micromotor with self-propulsion and dynamic ‘predator-bait’ collective behavior, which is based on the photocatalytic reaction of BiVO 4 . The BiVO 4 -based micromotor has great potential in the field of organic pollutant degradation with enhanced apparent rate constant (0.076 min −1 ) which originates from the dynamic ‘predator-bait’ behavior.

Efficient enzymatic degradation of marine polysaccharides is hindered by the limited mass transfer induced from the high viscosity. In this study, taking viscous chitosan as an example, a urease-powered hollow mesoporous silica micromotor (UHMSMM) was prepared as the carrier to immobilize chitosanase (Chi), aiming at improving the degradation of chitosan by self-propulsion. At a urea concentration of 300 mM, Chi@UHMSMM exhibited the maximum motion behavior, confirmed by the doubled diffusion coefficient, even in viscous chitosan. The enhanced motion behavior improved the enzymatic performance. The catalytic efficiency was significantly increased, confirmed by the enhancement (3.8 times) of k c at / K m value. It is demonstrated that the autonomous movement could induce the micromixing of fluid in the microenvironment around Chi according to the simulated result, contributing to improved substrate affinity and catalytic efficiency. Also, the immobilization of Chi on UHMSMM induced a common improvement of enzyme immobilization, including enhanced thermo-stability and acid resistance. As a result, Chi@UHMSMM could work as an efficient platform for degrading chitosan, with a 125.75 % yield enhancement within 40 min. In this work, the reported strategy, which accelerates the enzymatic degradation of chitosan by the self-propulsion of enzyme-driven micro/nanomotors offers a novel approach for improving enzyme reactions in high-viscosity systems.

Micromotors have held great promise for environmental treatment due to their unique self-propelled movement that can significantly accelerate the chemical process in solution. Herein, we have developed a new AO–Mn2O3/γ-AlO(OH) fluorescent micromotor using renewable and uniquely hollow kapok fibers as biological templates. The AO–Mn2O3/γ-AlO(OH) micromotor was powered by the asymmetric decomposition of hydrogen peroxide fuel catalyzed by Mn2O3, reaching a maximum speed of 139.6 μm s−1 in 3% H2O2 solution. The micromotor revealed a markedly enhanced fluorescence effect compared to both pure AO solution and non-micromotor counterparts and exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ detection. The detection range and limit for Hg2+ were 5 × 10−8–5 × 10−5 M and 2.25 × 10−8 M, respectively. The enhanced Hg2+ sensing benefited from the synergy of enhanced fluorescence via the inhibition of the dimerization of AO, fluorescence quenching induced by charge transfer and the enhanced contact between the micromotor and Hg2+ ions resulted from the self-propelled motion. This micromotor-assisted fluorescence detection idea provided a new strategy for the development of sensors with high sensitivity.

Studies on combining the catalytic activity of nanomaterials with self-propelled micro/nanomotors for determining and degrading contaminants in the water environment are rapidly growing, especially in constructing cost-effective platforms that can simultaneously achieve both functions. Herein, we report a novel bifunctional magnetic micromotor (CA-MnO2@Co–N/C) with greatly enhanced micromixing performance, as well as improved detection and degradation capabilities for aniline in water. The CA-MnO2@Co–N/C micromotors were composed of a bioderived carbon matrix, ZIF-67-derived magnetic Co–N/C, and MnO2 nanosheets. The micromotors not only exhibited excellent peroxidase-like activity (POD-like activity) but also showed superior Fenton-like catalytic activity. The micromotors achieved self-propulsion motion by generating O2 bubbles from the catalytic decomposition of H2O2, with the highest speed of 398.88 μm s−1 in 7 wt% H2O2. The CA-MnO2@Co–N/C micromotors exhibited sensitive detection and efficient removal toward aniline in water, which was attributed to the synergistic effect between hierarchical structure, citric acid modification and bubble-driven propulsion. The limit of detection (LOD) for aniline was 0.185 μM, and the highest removal efficiency of aniline reached 83% in 180 min based on our dynamic catalytic reaction platform. In comparison to traditional micro/nanomaterials, the simple fabrication process, self-propulsion performance, and excellent catalytic activity of CA-MnO2@Co–N/C micromotors provided a promising strategy for a dynamic environmental monitoring and remediation platform.

Micro/nano-motors (MNMs) that combine attributes of miniaturization and self-propelled swimming mobility have been explored for efficient environmental remediation in the past decades. However, their progresses in practical applications are now subject to several critical issues including a complicated fabrication process, low production yield, and high material cost. Herein, we propose a biotemplated catalytic tubular micromotor consisting of a kapok fiber (KF, abundant in nature) matrix and manganese dioxide nanoparticles (MnO2 NPs) deposited on the outer and inner walls of the KF and demonstrate its applications for rapid removal of methylene blue (MB) in real-world wastewater. The fabrication is straightforward via dipping the KF into a potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution, featured with high yield and low cost. The distribution and amount of MnO2 can be easily controlled by varying the dipping time. The obtained motors are actuated and propelled by oxygen (O2) bubbles generated from MnO2-triggered catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), with the highest speed at 615 μm/s (i.e., 6 body length per second). To enhance decontamination efficacy and also enable magnetic navigation/recycling, magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) are adsorbed onto such motors via an electrostatic effect. Both the Fe3O4-induced Fenton reaction and hydroxyl radicals from MnO2-catalyzed H2O2 decomposition can account for the MB removal (or degradation). Results of this study, taken together, provide a cost-effective approach to achieve high-yield production of the MNMs, suggesting an automatous microcleaner able to perform practical wastewater treatment.

Water contamination resulting from heavy metal ions (HMIs) poses a severe threat to public health and the ecosystem. Attempts are tending to develop functional materials to realize efficient and intelligent adsorption of HMIs. Herein, self-propelled structural color cylindrical micromotors (SCCMs) with reversible HMIs adsorption capacity and self-reporting property are presented. The SCCMs are fabricated by using platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) tagged responsive hydrogel of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) to asymmetrically replicate tubular colloidal crystal templates (TCCTs). Owing to the self-propelled motion of the SCCMs, the enhancive ion–motor interactions bring significantly improved decontamination efficiency. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the SCCMs can realize quick and naked-eye-visible self-reporting during the adsorption/desorption process based on their responsive structure color variation and superior adsorption capacity. Thus, it is anticipated that such intelligent SCCMs can significantly facilitate the evolution of sensing assays and diverse environmental fields.

In the field of sustainable chemistry, it is still a significant challenge to realize efficient light-powered space-confined catalysis and propulsion due to the limited solar absorption efficiency and the low mass and heat transfer efficiency. Here, novel semiconductor TiO2 nanorockets with asymmetric, hollow, mesoporous, and double-layer structures are successfully constructed through a facile interfacial superassembly strategy. The high concentration of defects and unique topological features improve light scattering and reduce the distance for charge migration and directed charge separation, resulting in enhanced light harvesting in the confined nanospace and resulting in enhanced catalysis and self-propulsion. The movement velocity of double-layered nanorockets can reach up to 10.5 μm s–1 under visible light, which is approximately 57 and 119% higher than that of asymmetric single-layered TiO2 and isotropic hollow TiO2 nanospheres, respectively. In addition, the double-layered nanorockets improve the degradation rate of the common pollutant methylene blue under sustainable visible light with a 247% rise of first-order rate constant compared to isotropic hollow TiO2 nanospheres. Furthermore, FEA simulations reveal and confirm the double-layered confined-space enhanced catalysis and self-propulsion mechanism.

Photocatalytic micromotors hold considerable promise for use in water remediation owing to the synergistic effect of a combination of photocatalytic activity and self-propulsive behavior. We designed a symmetric TiO 2 @carbon microsphere (CMS) core–shell micromotor with photocatalytic TiO 2 for enhanced degradation of organic contaminants. TiO 2 @CMS micromotors were obtained via a facile sol–gel method and subsequent heat treatment to obtain an anatase TiO 2 shell. The self-propulsion of TiO 2 @CMS micromotors is governed by asymmetric decomposition of H2O2 via asymmetric illumination of the spherical particles. The photocatalytic propulsion can be switched on and off by modulating the incident light. The speed of the photocatalytic TiO 2 @CMS core–shell micromotors can be increased by increasing either the light intensity or concentration of the chemical fuel, i.e., H 2 O 2 . In the degradation of rhodamine B, the photocatalytic performance of the micromotors was higher than those achieved with control group photocatalysts . The degradation efficiency reached ∼100% in approximately 60 min when all necessary conditions, i.e., use of micromotors, UV irradiation, and H 2 O, were applied. TiO 2 @CMS core–shell micromotors have the advantages of facile preparation, a simple structure, self-propulsion, and a high degradation efficiency and photocatalytic performance. They will therefore be important in the development of methods for water purification and wastewater treatment.

The maneuver of small bubbles in a programmed way will advance numerous processes, including gas evolution reaction and aeration. Unlike in-air droplets, rapidly rising bubbles in liquid medium can hardly be steered through interaction with solid substrates, causing difficulties in maneuvering bubbles. We pattern and lubricate nanoporous substrates with regions of contrasting wettability that is similar to the back of Namib desert beetles and subsequently immerse the lubricated surface underwater to spontaneously form spatially patterned Nepenthes-inspired slippery surfaces after the dewetting of lubricants. As a result, bubbles are confined on lubricant-infused surfaces, with their high mobility well preserved. The interfacial states of attached bubbles are analyzed, and their dynamic sliding velocities are quantified. Using the lubricated patterned surfaces, we further demonstrate the predefined motion of bubbles driven by buoyancy at a small tiling angle, as well as a self-propulsion of bubbles driven by surface tension force at a tilting angle of 0°, respectively. The spatially lubricated surfaces simplify gas handling in liquid medium and have potential applications in fields where bubble handling is crucial.

Halloysite-based tubular nanorockets with chemical-/light-controlled self-propulsion and on-demand acceleration in velocity are reported. The nanorockets are fabricated by modifying halloysite nanotubes with nanoparticles of silver (Ag) and light-responsive α-Fe2O3 to prepare a composite of Ag–Fe2O3/HNTs. Compared to the traditional fabrication of tubular micro-/nanomotors, this strategy has merits in employing natural clay as substrates of an asymmetric tubular structure, of abundance, and of no complex instruments required. The velocity of self-propelled Ag–Fe2O3/HNTs nanorockets in fuel (3.0% H2O2) was ca. 1.7 times higher under the irradiation of visible light than that in darkness. Such light-enhanced propulsion can be wirelessly modulated by adjusting light intensity and H2O2 concentration. The highly repeatable and controlled “weak/strong” propulsion can be implemented by turning a light on and off. With the synergistic coupling of the photocatalysis of the Ag–Fe2O3 heterostructure and advanced oxidation in H2O2/visible light conditions, the Ag–Fe2O3/HNTs nanorockets achieve an enhanced performance of wastewater remediation. A test was done by the catalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. The light-enhanced propulsion is demonstrated to accelerate the degradation kinetics dramatically. All of these results illustrated that such motors can achieve efficient water remediation and open a new path for the photodegradation of organic pollutions.

Coagulation within blood vessels is a major cause of cardiovascular disease and global mortality, highlighting the urgent need for effective anticoagulant strategies. In this study, we introduce a dynamic and highly efficient anticoagulant platform, achieved through the fabrication of a novel colloidal microrobot with unique functional properties. The microrobot is a Janus colloidal sphere with one hemisphere coated with heparin-mimicking polymers and the other with gold. This structure endows the microrobot with self-propulsion capabilities, powered by biocompatible near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, without the need for chemical fuel. The heparin-mimicking polymers not only prevent blood clotting but also promote endothelial cell growth while inhibiting the proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Additionally, the self-propulsion feature allows the microrobot to travel long distances within blood vessels and precisely target sites for anticoagulation. Our work validates an approach for the production of biofunctionalized microrobots, which introduces a novel avenue for anticoagulation application through the development of innovative biofunctionalized colloidal devices.

Long-range communication is ubiquitous among living organisms, but it remains undiscovered among synthetic micro/nanomotors. Here, we report the long-range hydrodynamic communication among synthetic micromotors. With the high activities when powered by a mixed fuel of N 2 H 4 and H 2 O 2 , catalytic micromotors move in a stable oblique head-down orientation and thus generate strong, steady converging phoretic flows near a substrate. Consequently, they can emit robust hydrodynamic signals to trigger neighboring motors within a long range and also initiate an “approach-hit-and-run” response when sensing the signals emitted from others. This hydrodynamic communication can be reciprocal or one-way, intraspecific or interspecific, spontaneous or controllable, and it widely exists in various catalytic micromotor systems. Utilizing the hydrodynamic signal, the micromotor can also act as a leader to gather small particles (followers) and exhibit a biomimetic competitive behavior against others for the followers. This work may facilitate the fabrication of intelligent micro/nanorobots for micromanipulations and biomimetic micro/nanorobotic systems.
