Self-contracting oxidized starch/gelatin hydrogel for noninvasive wound closure and wound healing

Qin Mao,Oskar Hoffmann,Kun Yu,Fei Lu,Guangqian Lan,Fangyin Dai,Songmin Shang,Ruiqi Xie

Major challenges in traditional wound closure methods ( e.g. using sutures and skin staplers) remain inadequately unaddressed; these invasive treatments induce extra puncture wounds, anesthetic side effects, and severe scarring. Herein, an oxidized starch/gelatin-based shape memory hydrogel (OSG) was fabricated as a self-contracting wound dressing to facilitate noninvasive wound closure. The self-contracting properties were attributed by introducing crosslink net-points in the hydrogel polymer structure through Schiff base reaction between oxidized starch (OS) and gelatin. We systematically investigated the self-contracting properties to determine the feasibility of the hydrogel to treat wounds and promote wound closure noninvasively. Following elongation, OSGs could be entirely fixed in a temporary shape at 4 °C, and then contracted under infrared irradiation (IR) for shape memory activation near human physiological temperature (38 °C), providing sufficient recovery force (4 kPa) for successful noninvasive wound closure. Additionally, H&E staining revealed that thicker epidermis and dermis layers were achieved upon OSG treatment, confirming that the OSG facilitated tissue reconstruction in an in vivo rabbit model. Moreover, the OSG-treated wounds displayed smoother skin and no visible scarring compared to sutured wounds. Such excellent performance suggests that OSG hydrogel exhibits high potential as an alternative to medical sutures to facilitate noninvasive would closure.

Self-Retraction of Surfactant Droplets on a Superhydrophilic Surface

Tianyang Gao,Jinjin Li,Yuhong Liu,Jianbin Luo

In the present work, an interesting droplet self-retraction phenomenon of myristyltrimethylammonium bromide (C14TAB) solution on the superhydrophilic mica surface was observed. The self-retraction could only occur within a concentration range from 0.01 to 16 cmc. The maximum variation of the contact angle (from 24.99 to 76.85°) was observed in droplets with a concentration of 0.1 cmc. The self-retraction mechanism was studied based on high-speed photography, surface analyses, surface energy calculation, and model fitting. It was proved that there was a monolayer of C14TAB molecules adsorbed on the mica surface, which formed through the electrostatic interaction between the negative mica and the positively charged headgroups. The formation of this monolayer took only a short time of <67 ms since the droplet touched the surface, and the monolayer was well-distributed and hydrophobic with a surface free energy of 76.041 mJ/m2 (20% of mica’s surface free energy). The reduction of surface tension led to an imbalance at the borderline of the droplet, causing self-retraction. A model was established to simulate the self-retraction process and it agreed with the experimental data well. This study has significant implication in understanding the surface modification caused by surfactant molecules.

Internal curing with superabsorbent polymers of different chemical structures

Peihua Zhong,Mateusz Wyrzykowski,Nikolajs Toropovs,Lei Li,Jiaping Liu,Pietro Lura

This study investigates the absorption behavior of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) with different chemical structures and their effect on cement hydration , early-age autogenous shrinkage and mechanical properties of cement paste . SAP with high density of anionic functional groups absorbed the cement pore solution quickly, and then released it because the anionic groups on the network of SAP complexed with multivalent cations in the pore solution (e.g., Ca 2+ ). Much less release was measured for SAP with low density of anionic groups. Furthermore, SAP with either both anionic and cationic groups or with only non-ionic groups did not release the liquid. Despite their different behavior in solutions, all SAP were able to counteract autogenous shrinkage. SAP with either both ionic groups or high density of anionic groups showed excellent internal curing effect. The internal curing had no negative effect on the compressive strength of the paste when the total cement-to-water ratio was considered.

Water-Responsive Self-Contractive Silk-Based Skin Anti-Aging Tensioners with Customizable Biofunctions

Yating Xie,Lele Geng,Siyuan Ni,Wei Ni,Ruizhe He,Tiantian Liu,Gai Zhang,Tiger H. Tao,Keyin Liu,Yinbo Peng

Skin anti-aging treatments have become increasingly popular. Currently, the prevalent treatment method involves implanting skin tension regulation threads (skin lifting threads) under the skin, and radiofrequency treatments. In this study, inspired by the natural supercontraction of spider silk, the molecular structure of silk fibroin fibers is modulated into an oriented configuration. This modification endows silk proteins with water-responsive self-contraction capabilities, leading to the development of innovative self-contracting silk-based skin tensioners (SSSTs). To align with clinical requirements, skin tension regulation materials are functionalized by testing for their self-contraction, near-infrared laser heating function, and bacteriostatic properties. The SSSTs exhibited remarkable self-contraction properties, drug-loading and sustained-release capabilities, notable antibacterial effects, controllable degradation, and good biocompatibility. Moreover, the near-infrared light heating function effectively increased subcutaneous temperature, demonstrating its potential for enhancing and prolonging skin lifting effects. Therefore, SSSTs can be applied for skin tension regulation to improve and delay skin aging. The results may pave the way for novel strategies in skin rejuvenation, with broad implications for the field of skin anti-aging.

Microstructure tailoring of internal curing agents: modified cement particles/superabsorbent polymers composites balancing strength and shrinkage mitigation

Yasen Li,Cheng Zhang,Yangyang Xiang,Yanru Chen,Tingzhong Li,Honghai Cui,Guoxing Sun

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are widely studied as internal curing agents in high-performance concrete, but their adverse effects on pore structure remain a challenge. This study introduces an innovative cement-integrated SAP (CiSAP) by modifying the interface, using KH570-modified cement (KMC) as the functional core. By optimizing KMC content, the microstructure was improved, leading to enhanced performance. Structural characterization confirmed that KMC was successfully embedded into the polymer network. CiSAP30 reduced shrinkage by 61.4 % due to its excellent desorption efficiency. The 28-day strength retention of CiSAP in cement-based materials varied from 93.4 % to 99.6 %, compared to the reference group without CiSAP. MIP and fractal dimension analysis indicated that CiSAP refined the microstructure by reducing large capillary pores and filling macropores. The sustained water release from CiSAP, along with KMC hydration, promoted long-term densification and controlled autogenous shrinkage. This study provides a novel strategy for designing internal curing agents for high-performance cement-based materials.

Basic magnesium sulfate cement: Autogenous shrinkage evolution and mechanism under various chemical admixtures

Yongshan Tan,Hongfa Yu,Dingyi Yang,Taotao Feng

Basic magnesium sulfate cement (BMSC) is a new type of whisker self-toughening cement-based material. Owing to its excellent mechanical properties , it has been applied to high-speed rail cover plates and military protective materials. However, the shrinkage deformation problem affects the application of BMSC in other fields. This article describes the effects of three chemical admixtures on the basic mechanical properties and autogenous shrinkage deformation of BMSC. Isothermal calorimetry (IC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) were performed to study the influence of different chemical admixtures on the phase and microstructure of BMSC. Finally, based on the microscopic phase and structure analysis results, the autogenous shrinkage mechanism of BMSC under the action of different chemical admixtures was systematically analyzed. The results show that citric acid (CA) and amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) can significantly improve the compressive strength of BMSC. Based on the phase analysis and microstructure analysis , ATMP and CA can induce more formation of the needle-like 5-1-7 phase. The results of shrinkage deformation show that the unmodified BMSC has obvious expansion, and the expansion rate increases with time. However, the BMSC modified by chemical admixtures shows small expansions at first, and then begins to show continuous shrinkage deformation. The expansion in the unmodified BMSC during crystal growth stems from the crystallization pressure of Mg(OH) 2 as the main driving force. However, the formation of Mg(OH) 2 is inhibited in the modified BMSC, so the shrinkage deformation of BMSC was mainly caused by the formation of the 5-1-7 phase.

Design, synthesis and characterization of a starch-based superabsorbent polymer and its impact on autogenous shrinkage of cement paste

Xinchun Guan,Jianjian Zhang,Shengying Zhao

The commercial sodium polyacrylate (PAA) and poly acrylic acid-co-acrylamide (PAM) are commonly used superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) that act as internal curing agents of cement pastes . However, their adaptability relatively low to the alkaline environment hinders their practical application in concrete. Based on the application and compositions of SAPs, a starch-based superabsorbent polymer (SSP) was designed and synthesized using corn starch by modulating charge density and hydrophilic group . SSP exhibited water absorption of 1305 g/g in deionized water and 86 g/g in cement filtrate. The water absorption and water desorption processes of SSP follow the second-order kinetics model . Increasing the hydrophilicity of the ionic groups and the proportion of non-ionic groups can enhance the water absorption and salt resistance of SSP. The SSP containing -SO 3 H and -CONH 2 groups has low crystallinity and high thermal stability, forming thin gel membranes in solutions. Compared to PAA and PAM, SSP shows faster water absorption, higher water storage and slower water desorption. Its mitigating effect on autogenous shrinkage of cement paste is significantly higher than that of PAA and PAM, with less compressive strength loss.

Synthesis of a spherical starch-based superabsorbent polymer and its influence on the microstructure of hardened cement paste

Jianjian Zhang,Shuai Bai,Jingjing Lyu,Xinchun Guan

The traditional superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are usually irregular particles prepared from petroleum derivatives. Additionally, they often encounter issues such as premature water desorption and inadequate water absorption when applied in cement-based materials. This research synthesized a spherical starch-based superabsorbent polymer (SSSP) with stable water absorption using inverse suspension polymerization, analyzed the influencing factors, adsorption-desorption performance and microstructure of SSSP, and investigated its influence on the cement paste. The results indicate that, the factors affecting the sphericity of SSSP are stirring speed, N 2 flow rate, dosage of suspending agent, and the mass ratio of organic phase to aqueous phase in sequence. The water absorption and water storage of starch-based SAP are 2.8 times and 1.4 times higher than those of traditional petroleum-based SAPs. The salt (alkaline) resistance of SSSP is enhanced by grafting stronger hydrophilic –SO 3 H and non-ionic –CONH 2 groups, with the former being more readily grafted onto starch. The dried SSSP particles exhibit a smooth surface with a sphericity of 0.98, forming spherical hydrogels upon water absorption. SSSP mitigates 75 % of the autogenous shrinkage of cement paste, with a compressive strength 8.6 % lower than the control group, but still higher than that of other SAP pastes. The voids formed by SSSP desorption are mainly spherical, containing hydration products inside, and the pore distribution in its paste tends towards a smaller scale, with a higher proportion of high-density and ultra-high-density C–S–H.

Analysis of the pore-forming mechanism of SAP and its influence mechanism on cement paste performance based on fluorescence impregnation method

Mingwei Wang,Bin Li,Zhendi Wang,Ling Wang

Understanding the porosity characteristics and mechanisms of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) in cement-based materials is crucial for evaluating their effects on autogenous shrinkage and compressive strength in cement-based materials. In this study, SAPs with different chemical compositions were synthesized by copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM). Absorption and release behaviors were analyzed, while pore formation parameters were assessed using ultraviolet fluorescence impregnation and digital image processing. Combined with FTIR, TG/DTA, and performance tests, water release characteristics, pore formation mechanisms, and regulatory effects on cement paste were evaluated. Key findings include in terms of absorption behavior, the equilibrium absorption capacity in cement filtrate decreases as AA content in SAP increases. Pore-forming absorption capacity in actual cement paste is higher than that obtained in cement filtrate. The ability of SAP to reduce autogenous shrinkage depends on its water storage and release properties. The optimal composition for minimizing shrinkage is m AA : m AM = 25 %:75 %. For compressive strength, SAP-induced porosity ( η pf ) is the primary factor. Similar η pf values for certain compositions lead to lower strengths. When SAP contains only −CONH groups, the compressive strength is highest. This study provides a theoretical basis for optimizing SAP composition to reduce autogenous shrinkage and enhance concrete strength.

Oral environment targeting sutures for refractory oral wound

Shuze Wang,Jin Wang,Yue Wang,Xintong Ye,Liyun Zhang,Guangqi Yan,Xue Wang

The use of sutures for stable wound closure in the humid, microbiologically complex oral environment is critical for mucosal healing. However, traditional absorbable sutures often loosen due to oral movements, leading to micro-gaps and accelerated microbial colonization, which disrupts healing. Inspired by spider silk's "expansion-induced supercontraction" in humidity, this study develops tea polyphenols self-contracting sutures to enhance mechanical reinforcement and repair efficiency. This next-generation degradable suture features a spider silk-inspired elastic network: polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) chains provide entropy-driven elastic recovery, while an ion-crosslinked network of sodium alginate and Ca²⁺ serves as a moisture-responsive unit. When dry, the network maintains pre-tension. Upon hydration, water molecules competitively coordinate with alginate and Ca²⁺, reducing crosslink density. This allows the PVA network to actively contract within four hours post-surgery, approximating wound edges, minimizing gaps, and reducing bacterial invasion. This next-generation degradable suture exhibits robust antibacterial activity, with 90.3 % inhibition against E. coli and 95.6 % against S. aureus. It also exerts significant biological regulation: compared to controls, it upregulates anti-inflammatory IL-10 expression by 2.41-fold, enhances oxidative stress scavenging capacity by 1.87-fold, and promotes angiogenesis. In vivo tests on difficult oral wounds show this next-generation degradable suture accelerates healing, reduces scarring, and improves tissue regeneration quality, especially in infected wounds. It holds broad potential for minimally invasive oral and maxillofacial surgeries and infection-prone wound repair.

The influence of nano-silica composite superabsorbent polymer on the autogenous shrinkage of mortar

Yinghui Shen,Zhiyu Wang,Yifan Zhou,Juan Du,Junying Lai,Kuangliang Qian,Shaoqin Ruan,Yutian Bi,Xiaoqian Qian

To address the diminished shrinkage reduction capacity due to high ion sensitivity of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) within cement-based materials, this study employs solution polymerization where acrylic acid and acrylamide are copolymerized with nano-silica at varying concentrations to synthesize innovative SAPs. The investigation encompasses the structural groups, microscopic morphology, liquid absorption characteristics of these SAPs, and their effect on mortar's autogenous shrinkage. The results indicate that nano-silica can be encapsulated within polyacrylate-acrylamide network via physical adsorption and chemical grafting. The incorporation of nano-silica enhances the water absorption and retention capacities of SAPs in alkaline environments. Nano-silica composite SAPs absorb sufficient internal curing water and prolong the subsequent moisture gradient-driven water release process, continuously releasing water within matrix to maintain internal humidity, thereby further enhancing the shrinkage reduction effect on mortar. Based on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observations of SAPs morphologies within mortar and X-ray Computed Tomography (X-CT) monitoring of internal curing water distribution, it is revealed that nano-silica undergoes pozzolanic reactions, forming a tightly connected domain with matrix. This facilitates continuous water release to the surrounding through capillary action, thus maintaining capillary pore liquid levels. Consequently, it effectively mitigating shrinkage stress and deformation, leading to an enhancement in shrinkage reduction effects.

A compact aqueous K-ion Micro-battery by a Self-shrinkage assembly strategy

Yuyang Han,Chunlong Dai,Jingguo Lin,Feng Liu,Hongwei Ma,Ying Wang,Bing Lu,Changxiang Shao,Qiang Guo,Xuting Jin,Xinqun Zhang,Zhipan Zhang

Micro-batteries are promising power sources to drive miniaturized or portable electronic devices due to their higher energy density than micro-supercapacitors. Current micro-batteries still suffer from relatively large footprint and unsatisfactory areal electrochemical performance caused by loose electrode structure. Here, we develop a compact aqueous K-ion micro-battery through the self-shrinking of reduced graphene oxide hydrogel to realize small footprint and high areal capacity at the same time. With a volume of as small as 0.00381 cm −3 , this micro-battery delivers the highest areal capacity (5.1 mAh cm −2 ) and energy density (4.78 mWh cm −2 ) among all reported micro-batteries. Meanwhile, this micro-battery can be prepared into different shapes and attached onto a range of animals (ants, crabs and butterflies, etc.) for wide applications.
