Cotton fabrics are prone to harboring pathogenic microorganisms due to their microporous structure, leading to material degradation and potential health hazards. While conventional sterilization methods in medical systems such as autoclaving, UV irradiation, and chemical disinfectants are constrained by equipment reliance, restricted applicability, and possible hazards, this study introduces a sunlight-driven antibacterial solution. By constructing a pg-C3N4/ZnO heterojunction photosensitizer on the fabric surface, a Schottky barrier was created at the interfaces of ZnO and pg-C3N4, which enhanced carrier separation efficiency under solar illumination, thereby boosting reactive oxygen species generation for efficient sterilization. To overcome the limitations of traditional loading techniques such as impregnation and chemical precipitation in achieving precise ZnO deposition on pg-C3N4, atomic layer deposition was employed to optimize the heterojunction’s interfacial structure and energy band alignment, thereby maximizing ROS generation (demonstrating a 3.63-fold enhancement) and enabling efficient sunlight-driven antibacterial activity. The resulting composite exhibits dual antimicrobial mechanisms: high ROS concentrations induce oxidative damage to bacterial membranes, DNA, and proteins, while Zn2+ release from ZnO decomposition further disrupts microbial metabolism. Through stable amine-aldehyde covalent grafting, the pg-C3N4/ZnO system demonstrates durable antibacterial performance, rapid sterilization under washing, drying, and daily use conditions, and excellent scalability. This cost-effective and eco-friendly technology holds significant promise for applications in hygienic textiles, medical environments, and public infrastructure.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) can significantly reduce the negative impact of emerging infectious diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria on public health and the global economy. However, conventional PPE without self-disinfection properties cannot kill the attached microorganisms efficiently, and may cause cross-contamination and environmental damage. Herein, an efficient aggregation-induced emission photosensitizer (AIE PS), ( E )-2-(3-cyano-5,5-dimethyl- 4-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)-styryl)furan-2(5H)-ylidene)malononitrile (TPE-TCF), was in-situ packaged within hollow nanospheres of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) by the assistance of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), to prepare TPE-TCF/SDS@ZIF-8 nanoparticles (NPs). These NPs exhibited both high reactive oxygen species (ROS) production efficiency and good stability. Then, they were assembled onto a polyacrylonitrile/polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PPP) electrospun nanofiber mats to form composite nanofiber mats TZ-PPP via a visible light-induced dopamine (DA)-assisted co-deposition method. The electrospun nanofiber mats serve as an efficient antibacterial nano-platform, providing more adsorption sites for the composite NPs, enabling the exposed composite NPs to interact with oxygen sufficiently, and maximizing their antibacterial efficacy substantially. Importantly, the TZ-PPP composite nanofiber mats retained the initial ultra-high ROS production efficiency and superior antibacterial performance of TPE-TCF/SDS@ZIF-8 NPs. Under the irradiation of low-power white light (400-830 nm, 50 mW cm -2 ), TZ-PPP nanofiber mats were able to remove more than 99.9% (10 min) and 99.0% (40 min) of bacteria and fungi, respectively, with significant photodynamic inactivation of microorganisms. This study is an exploration of the combination of AIE PS with nanofibers, whose outstanding photodynamic antibacterial properties provide new perspectives for the development of novel medical protective materials.

The development of new kinds of organic semiconductor-based photocatalysts has being attracting more and more research attentions due to their advantages over traditional inorganic photocatalysts and their great application prospects. In this work, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), a low-cost homopolymer largely used in the textile industry, was found for the first time to possess the photocatalytic capability due to its good light absorption and proper electronic band structure to generate radicals. Under simulated solar illumination, it successfully degraded organic pollutants of phenol and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and disinfected Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) bacteria. After 2 h treatment, the residual concentrations of phenol and SMX decreased to ∼ 75.9 % and ∼ 89 % respectively, while the survival ratio of E. coli cells dropped to only ∼ 28 % after 1 h treatment. h + and ·O 2 – were found to be the main active species in its photocatalytic process. It had a good stability and reusability, and worked well in the real water matrix of tap water, beneficial for its practical applications. PAN, PAN-based organics, and organics with similar structures as PAN could become a new series of organic semiconductor-based photocatalysts for various technical applications, especially as wearable products with self-disinfection property to provide protection against bacteria and viruses.

Combining photodynamic antimicrobials with nonwovens is prospective. However, common photosensitizers still have drawbacks such as poor photoactivity and the inability to charge. In this study, a photodynamic and high-efficiency antimicrobial protective material was prepared by grafting bis benzophenone-structured 4,4-terephthaloyl diphthalic anhydride (TDPA) photosensitizer, and antimicrobial agent chlorogenic acid (CA) onto spunbond-meltblown-spunbond (SMS) membranes. The charging rates for · OH and H 2 O 2 were 6377.89 and 913.52 μg/g/h. The light absorption transients structural storage remained above 69% for 1 month. High electrical capacity remained after seven cycles indicating its rechargeability and recyclability. The SMS/TDPA/CA membrane has excellent bactericidal performance when under illumination or lightless conditions, and the bactericidal efficiency of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reached over 99%. The construction of self-disinfection textiles based on the photodynamic strategies proposed in this paper is constructive for expanding and promoting the application of textile materials in the medical field.

The outbreak of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 causes an urgent need for abundant personal protective equipment (PPE) which leads to a huge shortage of raw materials. Additionally, the inappropriate disposal and sterilization of PPE may result in a high risk of cross-contamination. Therefore, the exploration of antimicrobial materials possessing both microbe interception and self-decontamination effects to develop reusable and easy-to-sterilize PPE is of great importance. Herein, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active luminogen-loaded nanofibrous membrane ( [email protected] ) sharing sunlight-triggered photodynamic/photothermal anti-pathogen functions are prepared using the electrospinning technique. Thanks to its porous nanostructure, [email protected] shows excellent interception effects toward ultrafine particles and pathogenic aerosols. Benefiting from the superior photophysical properties of the AIE-active dopants, [email protected] exhibits integrated properties of wide absorption in visible light range, efficient ROS generation, and moderate photothermal conversion performance. A series of antimicrobial evaluations reveal that [email protected] could effectively inactivate pathogenic aerosols containing bacteria (inhibition rate: >99%), fungi (~88%), and viruses (>99%) within only 10 min sunlight irradiation. This study represents a new strategy to construct reusable and easy-to-sterilize hybrid materials for potential bioprotective applications.

Protective masks are critical to impeding microorganism transmission but can propagate infection via pathogen buildup and face touching. To reduce this liability, we integrated electrospun photocatalytic graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanoflakes into standard surgical masks to confer a self-sanitization capacity. By optimizing the purine/melamine precursor ratio during synthesis, we reduced the g-C3N4 band gap from 2.92 to 2.05 eV, eliciting a 4× increase in sterilizing hydrogen peroxide production under visible light. This narrower band gap enables robust photocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species from environmental and breath humidity to swiftly eliminate accumulated microbes. Under ambient sunlight, the g-C3N4 nanocomposite mask layer achieved a 97% reduction in the bacterial viability during typical use. Because the optimized band gap also allows photocatalytic activity under shadowless lamp illumination, the self-cleaning functionality could mitigate infection risk from residual pathogens in routine hospital settings. Both g-C3N4 and polycaprolactone demonstrate favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability, making this approach preferable over current commercially available metal-based options. Given the abundance and low cost of these components, this scalable approach could expand global access to reusable self-sanitizing protective masks, serving as a sustainable public health preparedness measure against future pandemics, especially in resource-limited settings.
