Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been recognized as an effective absorbent for uranium. Recognizing and revealing its fate in coordinating with uranyl ions (U(VI)) under various conditions are vital for its practical application. In this work, HAP nanoflowers were synthesized by a simple wet chemical method, and the immobilization properties of HAP on U(VI) and U(VI) phase transformation during immobilization process were investigated systematically using a host of experimental methods and advanced characterization techniques. The results show that HAP can effectively immobilize U(VI) at high concentrations (50–3000 mg/L), with a maximum U(VI) adsorption capacity (q) of 10,200 mg/g and a distribution ratio (K d ) higher than 1.16 × 10 5 mL/g. Under the presence of sufficient U(VI) and a pH around 1.5 ∼ 3.0, HAP can rapidly react with U(VI) to form Autunite (Ca(UO 2 ) 2 (PO 4 ) 2 ·3H 2 O) with a nanoflake morphology, which is demonstrated excellently long-term stability. A moderately low pH that enables form adequately free calcium ions and phosphate groups via hydrolysis of HAP is essential to the mineralization of U(VI). This work is expected to pave the way for the use of HAP to develop highly efficient immobilization agents for the remediation of uranium-contaminated scenes and presents a comprehensive insight into the mechanisms of long-term U(VI) stabilization.

Repositioning and securing the cranial bone flap after craniotomy remain significant challenges in neurosurgery. Traditional fixation methods often suffer from weak mechanical strength, bioinertness, limited osteogenic capacity, and a lack of antibacterial properties, complicating clinical outcomes. Recent medical adhesives offer superior fixation but face significant limitations in cranial bone applications. In this study, we explored the application of PAH (Poly (allylamine) hydrochloride)-TPP (Tripolyphosphate) coacervate (PT) as a bone adhesive. The PT coacervate demonstrated excellent anti-swelling (anti-swelling ratio less than 1 %), self-healing, and injectable properties, as well as exceptional shape adaptability and cytocompatibility. Adhesion tests revealed its outstanding adhesion (99.06 ± 11.76 kPa for lap shear and 121.42 ± 16.73 kPa for end to end), long-term durability, and tunable adhesion strength. Furthermore, the coacervate demonstrated broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (antibacterial rate more than 90 %), with mechanistic studies revealing promising strategies to address localized and systemic drug-resistant infections. Additionally, the coacervate's self-mineralizing properties significantly enhanced its osteogenic performance. In vivo studies confirmed its effective fixation, robust antibacterial activity, and improved osteogenesis, underscoring its suitability for cranial bone flap repositioning and fixation after craniotomy. In summary, this coacervate adhesive offers a promising therapeutic solution for addressing the challenges of cranial flap fixation in neurosurgery.

Despite advancements in biomimetic mineralization techniques, the repair of large-scale bone defects remains a significant challenge. Inspired by the bone formation process, a multidimensional biomimetic cascade strategy is developed by replicating the biomineralization cascade, emulating the hierarchical structure of bone, and biomimicking its biological functions for efficient bone regeneration. This strategy involves the photocrosslinking of sodium methacrylate carboxymethyl cellulose-stabilized amorphous magnesium-calcium phosphate with methacrylate-modified type I collagen to create a self-mineralizing hydrogel. The hydrogel is then integrated with either naturally derived or synthetic oriented bulk scaffolds. The resulting composite, named Osteomimix, provides excellent mechanical support and can be customized for irregular bone defects using CAD/CAM technology. Through in vitro and in vivo studies, this work finds that Osteomimix exhibits spontaneous in situ biomimetic mineralization in a cell-free environment, while modulating immune responses and promoting vascularized bone formation in a cell-dependent manner. Built on bone-specific insights, this strategy achieves biomimicry across temporal, spatial, and functional dimensions, facilitating the seamless integration of artificial constructs with the natural tissue repair dynamics.
