A cellulose-reinforced eutectogel was constructed by deep eutectic solvent (DES) and cotton linter cellulose. Cellulose was dispersed in the ternary DES consisting of acrylic acid, choline chloride and AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O. The photoinitiator was then introduced into the system to in situ polymerize acrylic acid monomer to form transparent and ionic conductive eutectogels while keeping all the DES. The crosslinks formed by Al 3+ induced ionic bonds and reversible links formed by hydrogen bonds give the eutectogels high stretchability (3200 ± 200 % tensile strain), self-adhesive (52.1 kPa to glass), self-healing and good mechanical strength (670 kPa). The eutectogels were assembled into sensors and epidermal patch electrodes that demonstrated high quality human motion sensing and physiological signal detection (electrocardiogram and electromyography). This work provides a facile way to design flexible electronics for sensing.

The fabrication of adhesive hydrogel systems is quite important for biological applications. Herein, two-stage thiol-based click reactions have been employed for the preparation and adhesion of hydrogels. In the first stage, two self-adhesive hydrogels (HG-1 and HG-2) were constructed via the thiol-based click reactions and thiol–thiol coupling reaction under different stimuli, employing the same functional copolymer poly(propargyl methacrylate-co-N-(3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl) methacrylamide-co-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (poly(PMA-co-DMA-co-PEGMA), polyPDP) and a 4-arm thiol-PEG cross-linker. Subsequently, the two prepared hydrogels achieved responsive self-adhesion properties via the second stage of thiol-based click reactions between the preserved functional groups under different stimuli. Moreover, the self-adhered hydrogels exhibited increased mechanical strength after adhesion. The present strategy thus provides a facile approach for the fabrication of hydrogel systems with on-demand self-adhesive properties.

Polyelectrolyte hydrogels, combining the conductivity of polyelectrolytes with the flexibility of hydrogels, have become a popular candidate for flexible sensors, soft robotics, and electronic skins due to their remarkable stability in electrical conductivity. However, their mechanical properties and adhesive strength are limited because of their single-type bonding interaction. This work introduces a double-networked (DN) polyelectrolyte hydrogel formed through polymer chain entanglements, chemical crosslinking, and the incorporation of multiple strong and/or weak bonding interactions. The first network is a chemically crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAAm). The second network consists of polyelectrolytes (poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and poly(methacrylic acid sodium salt) (PMAANa)), which form numerous weak and/or strong ionic bonds. Weak and/or strong hydrogen bonds are present within and between two networks. The mechanical properties and adhesive strength of the polyelectrolyte DN hydrogel can be tailored through modulating the content of PAAm, polyelectrolytes, and co-solvents. The optimal compositions have a tensile modulus of 10.8 kPa, tensile fracture strain of 1000%, and adhesive strength of 37.8 kPa. The hydrogel sensors are successfully applied to flexible electrodes for various devices for detecting human motion, handwriting recognition, and continuous monitoring of electrophysiological signals. The distinctive solvent-adjustable transparency of the gel also allows for its utilization in information encryption and decryption.

Conductive hydrogels are characterized by their extraordinary stretchability, flexibility, and biocompatibility, making them ideal materials for flexible wearable sensors. However, they often encounter challenges such as freezing and water loss, which can adversely affect their conductivity and stretching performance. In this study, we introduce a conductive hydrogel incorporating polyethylene glycol (PEG), acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AM), and lithium chloride (LiCl), which exhibits low-temperature tolerance, resistance to drying, self-adhesion, and mechanical robustness. The hydrogel’s excellent mechanical properties, including an elongation at break of 1120% and a toughness of 2.9 MJ m–3, are attributed to the formation of a tight polymer network between P(AA-AM) and PEG through hydrogen bonding. The multiple hydrogen bonding system between PEG and the polymer networks, combined with the hydration of LiCl and electrostatic interactions between the carboxyl group and Li+, significantly enhances the hydrogel’s freezing resistance (down to −60 °C), water retention (with only 20% water loss after 15 days), and self-adhesion (with an adhesion strength to pig skin of up to 55.08 kPa). When employed as a flexible sensor, the P(AA–AM)/PEG/LiCl hydrogel exhibited excellent sensing properties for monitoring various human motions, with an impressive gauge factor of 1.91 and electrical conductivity of 4.50 S m–1 Moreover, it maintained a high electrical conductivity (3.82 S m–1) even at −20 °C. The conductive hydrogel consistently produced stable and reliable electrical signals in response to external mechanical stimuli, making it a preferred material for human motion monitoring.

A combination of surface lubrication and antibacterial performance is highly imperative for biomedical implants in clinic. In this study, motivated by mussel-inspired adhesion, articular cartilage superlubrication, and drug-loading capacity of cyclodextrins, a new copolymer of p(DMA-MPC-CD) (namely PDMC) with self-adhesion, lubrication, and drug loading & release properties is developed for fabricating a versatile platform to construct a synergistic bacteriostatic/bactericidal surface. Specifically, the biomimetic coating is prepared via polydopamine mediated layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method on the surface of titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V), and characterized by quartz crystal microbalance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and surface wettability to confirm the modification process. The biocompatibility evaluation using L929 cells shows that the coating, even with pre-loaded bactericide, presents satisfied biocompatibility in vitro. Additionally, the enhanced lubrication and bacterial resistance properties of copolymer-coated Ti6Al4V (Ti6Al4V@PDMC) are attributed to the tenacious hydration shell that is formed surrounding the zwitterionic phosphorylcholine charges. Furthermore, the bactericidal function of the biomimetic coating is successfully achieved by releasing the pre-loaded bactericide in a sustained manner, which effectively kills the adhered bacteria on the surface. In summary, the bioinspired surface functionalization strategy developed here may act as a universal and promising method for achieving enhanced lubrication and synergistic bacteriostatic/bactericidal properties in biomedical implants.

Conductive hydrogels are considered as highly promising candidates for fabricating flexible and wearable electronic devices. However, traditional hydrogels inevitably lose their inherent characteristics under extreme climatic conditions, which seriously hinders the practical application of hydrogel-based electronics. Herein, a toughened, self-healing, self-adhesive and transparent conductive gel (PAA-Zr4+/Gly/IL) with extraordinary temperature adaptability is prepared via a one-step photopolymerization of the acrylic acid (AA) monomer in Gly (glycerol)–IL ([Bmim]Cl) hybrid solvent containing Zr4+ ions. The carboxyl–Zr4+ coordination bonds and multiple hydrogen bond interactions within the gel networks contribute to the excellent mechanical properties (0.42 MPa at 1436% strain) and self-healing capability. Meanwhile, the synergistic effects of Gly and IL endow the as-prepared gel with significant temperature tolerance, which can maintain remarkable flexibility and mechanical strength even after being stored at −50, 20 and 50 °C for 30, 30 and 10 days without extra sealed packaging. Impressively, the PAA-Zr4+/Gly/IL gel-based sensors exhibit favorable sensitivity and repeatable response capability upon both mechanical and thermal stimulation. As a strain sensor, it demonstrates a wide sensing range (5–700%), prominent signal stability (1100 cycles at 300% strain) and precise human motion detection along two opposite directions. As a thermal response sensor, it can accurately and reliably sense temperature changes in a wide range from −50 to 50 °C. Noticeably, owing to the significant self-healing properties and temperature tolerance, the pristine and healed PAA-Zr4+/Gly/IL gels after long-term storage at various temperatures (−50, 20 and 50 °C) are also capable of demonstrating a recognizable and reliable signal response when detecting tensile strains and prosthetic finger bending movements in normal and harsh environments. This work provides a powerful strategy to design versatile conductive elastomers with broad and long-term temperature tolerance for future flexible and wearable electronics.

With the rapid development of flexible wearable electronics, conductive hydrogels acting as flexible sensors have attracted increasingly extensive attention. Although significant progress has been made in designing and constructing hydrogel-based sensing devices, it is still a challenge to realize facile and fast preparation, long-term stability at extreme temperatures, high sensitivity and versatility at the same time in a conductive hydrogel. Herein, we report a facile metal ion catalytic strategy to quickly construct lithium chloride (LiCl)-doped conductive multiple-crosslinked (PSL) hydrogels, which are composed of a chemically crosslinked polyacrylamide network and interconnected long chains of polyethyleneimine and silk fibroin via physical crosslinking interactions. The obtained PSL hydrogels can achieve favourable tensile properties (141.75 kPa strength, 719.25% strain and 431.58 kJ m−3 toughness), high transparency (over 85%), outstanding adhesion behavior and repeatability towards various substrate materials. Interestingly, the introduction of LiCl can notably accelerate hydrogel formation at room temperature (within 30 s). Meanwhile, hydrogen bonds between LiCl and water molecules evidently elevate the moisturizing and antifreezing abilities of the hydrogel. Importantly, PSL hydrogel-based wearable strain sensors show high sensitivity, broad detection ranges and the capability to monitor human movements of elbows, wrists, fingers, knees and throats, demonstrating its application potential in the new generation of flexible wearable electronics.

It remains challenging for traditional cartilage replacements to simultaneously have the antifouling ability, self-adhesion, and adequate mechanical properties in the physiological environment. Here we develop a tri-layer hydrogel to address this issue. The precursor hydrogel was prepared through a three-cycle freezing-thawing process involving a blend of poly vinyl alcohol, chitosan and deionized water, followed by 3 h immerse in 25 wt% aqueous solution of grape seed protein. The top layer was modified with methacryloyl chloride and polymerized with sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA). Meanwhile, the bottom layer was coated with the adhesive of gelatin and tannin. On account of the multiple linkages (crystalline domains, hydrogen bonds, and ionic interactions), the compressive stress remained 42 MPa and the swelling ratio was 0.1 g/g even after a week immersion in simulated synovial fluid. Because of the introduction of SBMA, the hydrogel could resist non-specific protein adsorption and the coefficient of friction was 0.023 in simulated synovial fluid. The amino acids and polyphenol groups could form noncovalent interactions with various substrates, resulting in excellent underwater adhesion capability. The synergy of biocompatible materials and environmentally friendly progress led to exceptional biocompatibility, having promising applications in cartilage replacement.

Hydrogels as skin wound dressings have been extensively studied owing to their good flexibility and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the mechanical performance, adhesive capability, antifouling and antibacterial properties of conventional hydrogels are still unsatisfactory, which hinder the application of hydrogel for cutaneous healing. Here, we developed a novel biocompatible multifunctional hydrogel with super flexible, fatigue resistant, antifouling and self-adhesive capability for effective wound healing, where naturally rigid polymers including quaternized chitosan (QCS) and Tunicate cellulose nanocrystals (TCNCs) are used as bioactive cross-linkers and reinforcers to endow the hydrogel with excellent mechanical and antibacterial property, and the synergistic contributions from the poly(acrylic acid/methacrylate anhydride dopamine/sulfobetaine methacrylate) (poly(AA/DMA/SBMA)) chains and QCS endow the hydrogel with excellent adhesive property, antioxidant, antifouling and pH-responsive sustained drug release capabilities. The optimized hydrogel exhibited high tensile strength (77.69 KPa), large tensile strain (889.9 %), large toughness (307.51KJ.m −3 ), high adhesive strength (35.57 KPa) and ideal compressive property. The in vivo infected full-thickness skin model demonstrated that the hydrogel with vanvomycin sustained release ability efficiently improved the granulation tissue formation, facilitating collagen deposition and reducing inflammatory expression, thus effectively accelerating wound healing. This superiorly skin-adhesive antibacterial biocompatible hydrogel appears to be a promising candidate for wound therapy.

A purely physically crosslinked double network (DN) hydrogel, poly(sulfobetaine- co -acrylic acid)/chitosan-citrate (P(SBMA-co-AAc)/CS-Cit) DN hydrogel, was prepared based on electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between the polymer chains. The hydrogel is highly stretchable, transparent, anti-fatigue, self-adhesive and has good self-healing properties with a self-healing efficiency as high as 95.4%. Furthermore, the resistance of the P(SBMA-co-AAc)/CS-Cit DN hydrogel is sensitive to a wide strain window and the relative resistance shows stable and reliable change during deformation. Herein, the hydrogel was demonstrated as a strain sensor to detect human motions, such as joint bending and swallowing. More excitingly, before ionic crosslinking, the P(SBMA-co-AAc)/CS-Cit composite hydrogel is injectable, thus the P(SBMA-co-AAc)/CS-Cit DN hydrogel sensor can be made into various complex shapes by injecting the P(SBMA-co-AAc)/CS-Cit composite hydrogel into citrate solution, including multilayer structures, exhibiting a great potential for applications as 3D printing strain sensors.

The advent of hydrogel-based strain sensors has attracted immense research interest in artificial intelligence, wearable devices, and health-monitoring systems. However, the integration of the synergistic characteristics of good mechanical properties, self-adhesiveness, self-healing capability and high strain sensitivity for fabricating hydrogel-based strain sensors is still a challenge. Here, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel composed of a polyacrylamide (PAAm)/chitosan (CS) hybrid network is fabricated for wearable strain sensors. The PAAm network is cross-linked by hydrophobic associations, and the CS network is ionically cross-linked by carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs). These two networks are further interlocked by physical entanglement and hydrogen bond interactions. The obtained hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility, puncture resistance and self-healing capability because of the efficient energy dissipation of the dynamic cross-linking network. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibit self-adhesive behavior on various materials, including polytetrafluoroethylene, wood, glass, aluminum, rubber and skin. Notably, the hydrogels can be applied as soft human-motion sensors for real-time and accurate detection of both large-scale and small human activities, including joint motions, speaking, breathing, and even subtle blood pulsation. Therefore, it is anticipated that the flexible, self-adhesive, self-healing and conductive hydrogel-based strain sensor will have promising applications in artificial intelligence, soft robots, biomimetic prostheses, and personal health care.

Dual-network conductive hydrogels have drawn wide attention in epidemic electronics such as epidemic sensors and electrodes because of their inherent low Young’s modulus, high skin-compliance, and tunable mechanical strength. However, it is still full of challenges to gain a dual-network hydrogel with high stretchability, low hysteresis, and skin-adhesive performance simultaneously. Herein, to address this issue, a novel dual-network hydrogel (denoted as PAa hydrogel) with polyacrylamide as the first network and topologically entangled polydopamine as the secondary network was prepared through a facile gel-phase in situ self-polymerization and soaking treatment. Benefiting from the topological enhancement as well as the synergetic effects of hydrogen bonds and metal coordination bonds, low modulus (∼10 kPa), excellent stretchability (1090.8%), high compression (90%), negligible hysteresis (η = 0.019, energy loss coefficient), rapid recovery in seconds, and self-adhesion are obtained in the PAa hydrogels. To demonstrate their practical use, a states-independent and skin-adhesive epidemic sensor was successfully attached on human skin for motion detection. What is more, by using the hydrogel as an epidemic electrode, electromyogram signals were accurately detected and wirelessly transmitted to a smart phone. This work offers a new insight to understand the strengthening mechanism of dual network hydrogels and a design strategy for both epidemic sensors and electrodes.
