The commercial powdered activated carbon (PAC) has been selectively oxidized by two methods. The two oxidized methods are wet oxidation with ammonium persulfate and thermal treatment after acidification with hydrochloride acid, respectively. The two oxidized PAC were then functionalized with thermoresponsive poly ( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) in aqueous solution at ambient temperature. Comparing the two oxidized PAC products and their grafted derivatives, the oxidized PAC modified with thermal treatment after acidification shows larger surface area of 1184 m 2 /g and better adsorption of bisphenol A. Its derivative also exhibits relatively large surface area and adsorption capacity after grafted with PNIPAM. The maximum surface adsorption capacity simulated under Langmuir Models reached 156 mg/g. In addition, the grafted PAC products show self-flocculation behaviors with rapid response to temperature because of the thermal phase transition and entanglement behaviors of PNIPAM. The present study provides a new way to obtain carboxyl-rich activated carbon with large surface area and better adsorption capacity. The retrievable grafted PAC with good self-flocculation effect responsive to temperature will have high potential application in water remediation which requires pre-heating and emergency water treatment in the wild.

Microalgae-bacteria symbiotic systems were known to have great potential for simultaneous water purification and resource recovery, among them, microalgae-bacteria biofilm/granules have attracted much attention due to its excellent effluent quality and convenient biomass recovery. However, the effect of bacteria with attached-growth mode on microalgae, which has more significance for bioresource utilization, has been historically ignored. Thus, this study attempted to explore the responses of C. vulgaris to extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) extracted from aerobic granular sludge (AGS), for enhancing the understanding of microscopic mechanism of attached microalgae-bacteria symbiosis. Results showed that the performance of C. vulgaris was effectively boosted with AGS-EPS treatment at 12–16 mg TOC/L, highest biomass production (0.32±0.01 g/L), lipid accumulation (44.33±5.69%) and flocculation ability (20.83±0.21%) were achieved. These phenotypes were promoted associated with bioactive microbial metabolites in AGS-EPS (N-acyl-homoserine lactones, humic acid and tryptophan). Furthermore, the addition of CO 2 triggered carbon flow into the storage of lipids in C. vulgaris , and the synergistic effect of AGS-EPS and CO 2 for improving microalgal flocculation ability was disclosed. Transcriptomic analysis further revealed up-regulation of synthesis pathways for fatty acid and triacylglycerol that was triggered by AGS-EPS. And within the context of CO 2 addition, AGS-EPS substantially upregulated the expression of aromatic protein encoding genes, which further enhanced the self-flocculation of C. vulgaris . These findings provide novel insights into the microscopic mechanism of microalgae-bacteria symbiosis, and bring new enlightenment to wastewater valorization and carbon-neutral operation of wastewater treatment plants based on the symbiotic biofilm/biogranules system.

Self-flocculated powdered activated carbon (PAC) with high recovery performance and unique adsorption performance of bisphenol A (BPA) has been synthesized. PAC was treated with acidification to increase its surface active points without influence on its surface area. The PAC after acidification was functionalized in the presence of macro-initiators and then grafted with N -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in aqueous solution (PAC-PNIPAM). By controlling the grafting degrees of PNIPAM, the synthesized PAC-PNIPAM exhibited different removal efficiency of BPA, the maximum adsorption capacity simulated under Langmuir models reached 247.532 and 116.298 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the desorption behaviors of BPA also changed significantly from two-stage desorption to minor desorption in water, suggesting the potential application of PAC-PNIPAM in removal of concerned pollutants. Additionally, PAC-PNIPAM showed a good self-flocculation effect, implying that PAC after adsorption could be easily retried and recovered to avoid the secondary pollution of the adsorbent. In all, our work demonstrated potential application of this newly synthesized PAC in water purification and micro-pollutant remediation.

This article reports on the fabrication of hybrid boron nitride (BN) grafted with thermoresponsive poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and their self-flocculation effect caused by the thermal phase transition and entanglement behavior of PNIPAM. Compared with the initial BN, the PNIPAM graft BN (BN-PNIPAM) has larger area, pore volume and self-flocculation effect with rapid response to temperature. After grafting, the effective self-flocculation could be acquired in a wide concentration from 0.01 g/L to 10 g/L, the corresponding removal percentage with the phase transition is higher than 95% at high initial concentration. Furthermore, BN has a significant increase in the absorption of hydroquinone after grafting. Thermoresponsive adsorption and self-coagulation will make BN-PNIPAM recyclable in potential water restorations.

This article reports on the fabrication of hybrid titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles grafted with thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and their self-flocculation effect caused by the thermal phase transition and entanglement behavior of PNIPAM. Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was conducted rapidly (within a few minutes) in aqueous solution at ambient temperature by using CuBr/N,N,N′,N′′,N′′-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as the catalysts and started from the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles derivatized with ATRP initiators. Without purifying the inhibitor, the grafted PNIPAM gives low molecular weights (Mn < 3000) and a narrow molecular weight distribution (PDI < 1.1) determined by GPC detection, which gives the hybrid TiO2–PNIPAM both a self-flocculation effect with rapid response to temperature, and a temperature-controlled switching effect of the degradation of Rhodamine B in solution. Moreover, the hybrid TiO2–PNIPAM exhibits a particular dispersion effect at ambient temperature in aqueous solution caused by the hydrophilicity and the entanglement interaction of the grafted PNIPAM. These effects for hybrid TiO2–PNIPAM provide a new way to re-use TiO2 nanoparticles for pollutant degradation systems and to avoid secondary pollution effectively due to the thermal phase transition and entanglement behavior.
