Electrochemical Performance of Al-1Zn-0.1In-0.1Sn-0.5Mg-xMn (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) Alloys Used as the Anode of an Al-Air Battery

Wenfeng Zhang,Tongrui Hu,Tao Chen,Xiaowei Yang,Yunfeng Zhu,Tainian Yang,Liquan Li

In this work, Al-1Zn-0.1In-0.1Sn-0.5Mg-xMn (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloys are prepared and used as the anode of an Al-air battery (AAB). We use scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and optical microscopy (OM) to analyze the microstructures of the alloys. The hydrogen evolution rate, electrochemical performance (including polarization curves), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and battery performance of the samples are examined in the 4 M NaOH electrolyte. The experimental data display that the average grain size is significantly refined after adding manganese into the Al-1Zn-0.1In-0.1Sn-0.5Mg alloy, with a decrease in grain size from over 100 μm to about 10 μm. The improved activity of the aluminum anode in the AAB can be attributed to the introduction of manganese. The Al-1Zn-0.1In-0.1Sn-0.5Mg-0.1Mn alloy possesses the optimal overall performance with a lower self-corrosion rate (0.128 mL∙cm−2∙min−1), the highest working potential (1.630 V) and energy density (2415 mWh·g−1), a higher capacity (1481 mAh·g−1) and anodic utilization (49.75%).Keywords:aluminum alloy;aluminum-air battery;self-corrosion;grain size;electrochemical performance

An artificial aluminum–tin alloy layer on aluminum metal anodes for ultra-stable rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries

Xiao Wang,Chen Zhao,Peng Luo,Yan Xin,Yunnian Ge,Huajun Tian

Rechargeable aluminum ion batteries (RAIBs) exhibit great potential for next-generation energy storage systems owing to the abundant resources, high theoretical volumetric capacity and light weight of the Al metal anode. However, the development of RAIBs based on Al metal anodes faces challenges such as dendrite formation, self-corrosion, and volume expansion at the anode/electrolyte interface, which needs the rational design of an aluminum anode for high-performance RAIBs. This work proposes a novel and low-cost strategy by utilizing an alloy electrodeposition method in a low-temperature molten salt system to fabricate an aluminum–tin (AlSn) alloy coating layer on copper foil as the anode for RAIBs, which successfully addresses the issues of dendrite formation and corrosion at the anode/electrolyte interface. The artificial AlSn alloy layer could enhance the active sites for metal Al homogeneous deposition and effectively retard the dendrite formation, which was verified by an in situ optical microscopy study. The symmetric AlSn@Cu cell demonstrates a low average overpotential of ∼38 mV at a current density of 0.5 mA cm−2 and a long-term lifespan of over 1100 h. Moreover, the AlSn@Cu//Mo6S8 full cells deliver a high capacity of 114.9 mA h g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1 and maintain ultra-stable cycling stability even over 1400 cycles with a ∼100% coulombic efficiency (CE) during the long-term charge/discharge processes. This facile alloy electrodeposition approach for designing high-performance Al-based anodes provides insights into the understanding of artificial interface chemistry on Al-based anodes and potentially accelerates the design of high-performance RAIBs.

Nano-SiO2 and Silane Coupling Agent Co-Decorated Graphene Oxides with Enhanced Anti-Corrosion Performance of Epoxy Composite Coatings

Guangjie Hu,Yuxuan Xiao,Jie Ying

Coatings are of great significance for irons and steels in regards to the harsh marine environment. Graphene oxides (GO) have been considered as an ideal filler material of epoxy coating. However, the undesired dispersion in the epoxy together with easy agglomeration and stacking remain great problems for practical application of GO composited epoxy coatings. A method that can effectively solve both self-aggregation and poor dispersion of GO is highly desired. Herein, we present a high dispersion strategy of graphene oxides in epoxy by co-decoration of nano-SiO2and silane coupling agent. The co-decorated GO filled epoxy coating exhibits high anti-corrosion performance, including high electrochemical impedance, high self-corrosive potential, low self-corrosive current, and superior electrochemical impedance stability for ten days to Q235 carbon steel. This work displays new possibilities for designing novel coating materials with high performance toward practical marine anti-corrosion applications. Keywords:graphene oxide;epoxy coating;surface decoration;anti-corrosion

Highly Effective Electrolytes Toward High-Performance Aluminum/Seawater Batteries

Qingchao Xia,Zhengnan Li,Dewei Liu,Nan Song,Nan Zhang,Shuyang Ma,Zeliang Wu,Weiyong Yuan

Graphical A type of Al/H 2 O batteries has been developed using simulated seawater at an appropriate pH and added with PAA as a new electrolyte, which simultaneously greatly retards the self-corrosion of the Al anode and increases the electrocatalytic activity toward the HER. The optimized battery shows energy density higher than reported batteries and power density superior to reported metal/H 2 O batteries. The poor performance of metal/water batteries caused by self-corrosion of anodes and low catalytic activity of cathodes has been a long-standing challenge, greatly limiting their practical applications, in particular the underwater unmanned vehicle (UUV) application. We have fabricated an Al/seawater battery using simulated seawater with an appropriate pH and added with polyacrylic acid (PAA) as the electrolyte. This electrolyte simultaneously greatly retards self-corrosion of the Al anode by in situ forming a PAA-Al 3+ complex film on it and increases the electrocatalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction by improving the electronic structure of Pt. When utilizing the multielement-doped Al sheet as the anode and nickel foam supported loading-amount-optimized Pt/C catalyst as the cathode and adopting the developed new electrolyte, the obtained Al/H 2 O battery exhibits an energy density of 2271 Wh kg −1 , which is the highest among those of all the reported batteries, and a power density of 20.87 mW cm −2 , which outperforms all the reported metal/H 2 O batteries. This work not only develops a new type of high-performance Al/H 2 O batteries for practical applications such as UUVs, but provides scientific insight into the design of superior electrolytes, which could be further extended for improving the performances of various metal batteries.

An effective phosphate ester-containing organic additive for the alkaline Zn-MnO2 batteries

Chuanxi Zhao,Baoyuan Li,Kai Chang,Xin Zhang,Heng Xu,Dongyang Qiu,Qin Wang,He Miao

The Zn electrode in the alkaline Zn-MnO 2 batteries is suffered from the self-corrosion and hydrogen evolution, which deteriorates their discharge performance and storage life. To address these issues, this work proposes a low-cost and effective phosphate ester-containing organic additive, coconut oil alkyl alcohol amide phosphate ester (DG6503), for the alkaline electrolyte of the Zn-MnO 2 batteries. The phosphate ester groups in DG6503 can form a complex precipitate coating on the surface of Zn, and efficiently decrease H 2 evolution rate of the Zn electrode by over 90 %. DG6503 also can suppress the formation of nanoneedle ZnO products during the discharge of Zn-MnO 2 batteries. Therefore, the discharge capacities of the alkaline Zn-MnO 2 batteries can be greatly improved under the various discharge conditions before and after long-term storage. Our work provides a promising method for improving the discharge property and storage life of the alkaline Zn-MnO 2 batteries.

Min Wang,Guanghua Lu,Runren Jiang,Tianjian Dang,Yufang Chen,Jianchao Liu,Zhenhua Yan,Jun Hou

The widespread use of bisphenol F (BPF) as the commonly used alternative to bisphenol A (BPA) in the industry and its hazardous effects on ecological system and human health have attracted widespread attention. In this study, V C -FCN 0.3 hollow nanotube structure with confinement space effects and combined carbon vacancies was constructed by the spatial self-corrosion strategy, which effectively addressed the inherent limitations of conventional carbon nitride and achieved 100% removal rate of BPF within 2 h under visible light. Carbon vacancies not only accelerated the transfer of photogenerated carriers, but also enhanced the adsorption and activation of oxygen that accelerating the production of ·O 2 − , the main active species in this system. In addition, the special spatial structure shortened the mass transfer distance between the target pollutants and the active species. What's more, V C -FCN 0.3 showed excellent, stable, and eco-friendly photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol F over a wide pH range and in five water matrices, contributing effectively to the solution of purification of wastewater containing bisphenol analogues.

In Situ Visualization of Ion Transport Processes in Aqueous Batteries

Yongtang Chen,Xueyan Li,Junshuo Lian,Kang Fu,Zhongxi Zhao,Yi He,Peng Tan

Aqueous rechargeable batteries are regarded as one of the most reliable solutions for electrochemical energy storage, and ion (e.g., H+ or OH–) transport is essential for their electrochemical performance. However, modeling and numerical simulations often fall short of depicting the actual ion transport characteristics due to deviations in model assumptions from reality. Experimental methods, including laser interferometry, Raman, and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, are limited by the complexity of the system and the restricted detection of ions, making it difficult to detect specific ions such as H+ and OH–. Herein, in situ visualization of ion transport is achieved by innovatively introducing laser scanning confocal microscopy. Taking neutral Zn–air batteries as an example and using a pH-sensitive probe, real-time dynamic pH changes associated with ion transport processes are observed during battery operation. The results show that after immersion in the zinc sulfate electrolyte, the pH near the Zn electrode changes significantly and pulsation occurs, which demonstrates the intense self-corrosion hydrogen evolution reaction and the periodic change in the reaction intensity. In contrast, the change in the pH of the galvanized electrode plate is weak, proving its significant corrosion inhibition effect. For the air electrode, the heterogeneity of ion transport during the discharging and charging process is presented. With an increase of the current density, the ion transport characteristics gradually evolve from diffusion dominance to convection-diffusion codominance, revealing the importance of convection in the ion transport process inside batteries. This method opens up a new approach of studying ion transport inside batteries, guiding the design for performance enhancement.

Synergistic effect of surfactant and 1,10-decanedithiol as corrosion inhibitor for zinc anode in alkaline electrolyte of zinc-air batteries

Hongyu Cen,Yijian Gao,Shasha He,Zhuo Peng,Chonggang Wu,Zhenyu Chen

The self-discharge by corrosion of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) will result in the reduced coulombic efficiency and lower energy efficiency. The additives in electrolyte should not only inhibit the occurrence of self-corrosion during battery dormancy, but also achieve a stable cycle of adsorption–desorption during battery operation, improving the durability of discharge cycles. But the former requires strong binding between additives and zinc to form a dense protective film, while the latter requires easy desorption of additives and zinc without affecting discharge power, which is contradictory to balance. In this study, a dynamic combination of additives and zinc, as well as a design of multi-channel strategy for the corresponding protective layer, have been proposed to solve the issues of self-corrosion and discharge cycle stability. Specifically, the surfactant (octylphenol polyoxyethylene ether phosphate (OP-10P)) and 1,10-decanedithiol (DD) have been selected as the combined anti-corrosion additives in ZABs with concentrated alkaline solution. The synergistic inhibition mechanism and the stabilization mechanism in zinc-air full cells have been studied systematically. The results indicated that the combined inhibitors inhibited the self-corrosion of Zn efficiently in the dormancy, and the inhibition efficiency reached 99.9 % at the optimized proportion. OP-10P achieve the preferential adsorption on the zinc surface, and then the chelates of DD with Zn 2+ deposit on the outer layer to form the protective film with fine hydrophobic performance. The stability of ZABs in discharge and charging cycles has been improved owing to the multilayer adsorption film on zinc surface, which retains ion transport channels with the homogeneously pores to weaken the dendrites and side reactions during galvanostatic cycles. A probable model on zinc surface was established to discuss the actual working mechanism.

High-Strength agarose gel electrolyte enables long-endurance wearable Al-air batteries with greatly suppressed self-corrosion

Pengfei Sun,Juntong Chen,Yuanlin Huang,Jing-Hua Tian,Sha Li,Gulian Wang,Qiaobao Zhang,Zhaowu Tian,Li Zhang

Al-air batteries (AABs) are a great option for outdoor wearable electronics due to their high theoretical energy density (8100 Wh kg −1 ), huge industrial reserves and easy recyclability of Al, but suffer from severe self-corrosion, low Al utilization and harmful liquid leakage. Herein, we first devise a high-strength agarose gel electrolyte (AGE) that combines high toughness and super solution carrying capacity, for the construction of wearable AABs with high energy density, safety, easy assembly and greatly suppressed self-corrosion. The rigid AGEs convert the traditional Al/liquid interface into an Al/quasi-solid interface, thus leading to the formation of a Sn-dominated passivation layer that drastically inhibits the self-corrosion of Al. The in-depth failure mechanism study of AGE-based AAB coin cells demonstrates that three most critical factors affecting the discharge behavior of Al anodes are in order: H 2 accumulation, working current density and OH − replenishment. On this basis, the optimized large-area soft-package AAB (10 cm 2 ) shows a 20.1-hour discharge duration and a specific capacity of 2148.5 mAh g −1 (2766.9 Wh kg −1 ), outperforming those of the state-of-the-art AABs based on other gel electrolytes. More impressively, a practically useful wearable AAB pack is further prepared to drive the LED array and a smart phone.

CoFe hydroxide towards CoP2-FeP4 heterojunction for efficient and long-term stable water oxidation

Zhi Liu,Yu Dai,Xin Han,Chengyi Hou,Kerui Li,Yaogang Li,Hongzhi Wang,Qinghong Zhang

Electrochemical water splitting stands out as a promising avenue for green hydrogen production, yet its efficiency is fundamentally governed by the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, we investigated the growth mechanism of CoFe hydroxide formed by in situ self-corrosion of iron foam for the first time and the significant influence of dissolved oxygen in the immersion solution on this process. Based on this, the CoP 2 -FeP 4 /IF heterostructure catalytic electrode demonstrates exceptional OER activity in a 1 M KOH electrolyte, with an overpotential of only 253 ± 4 mV (@10 mA cm −2 ), along with durability exceeding 1000 h. Density functional theory calculations indicate that constructing heterojunction interfaces promotes the redistribution of interface electrons, optimizing the free energy of adsorbed intermediate during the water oxidation process. This research highlights the importance of integrating self-corroding in-situ growth with interface engineering techniques to develop efficient water splitting materials.

Controlled Synthesis of ZrO2@Zn Anode and Effect on the Cycle Life of Zinc–Air Battery Under High-Temperature Operating Conditions

Sun Lili,Sun Xudong,Wang Yong,Li Yongcun,Luo Anyu

Zinc anodes degrade rapidly under high-temperature operating conditions, significantly impeding the development and commercial application of Zn–air batteries. In this study, zirconia-coated zinc (ZrO 2 @Zn) was synthesized using a facile sol–gel method. The composition, structure, and electrochemical properties of the ZrO 2 @Zn anode were characterized. The results show that ZrO 2 @Zn has a core–shell structure contributing to regulating the cycle life of the battery. The passivation current of ZrO 2 @Zn is lower than that of Zn. This indicates that ZrO 2 @Zn exhibits enhanced passivation stability performance. The cycle life of ZrO 2 @Zn can be extended to 72 h at extreme operating temperatures of 60 °C, nearly double that of bare Zn. The coating ZrO 2 applied on the surface of Zn can effectively avoid the direct contact between Zn and electrolyte and reduces the self-corrosion of Zn anode. The increased adsorption of H + ions by ZrO 2 at elevated temperatures without affecting the deposition of Zn 2+ prolongs the lifetime of the ZrO 2 @Zn anode. The core–shell structure of ZrO 2 @Zn effectively mitigates the occurrence of anodic side reactions and inhibits the growth of Zn dendrites, thereby safeguarding the active material and extending the battery’s cycle life.

Developing improved electrolytes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries to achieve excellent cyclability and antifreezing ability

Anran Wang,Weijun Zhou,Aixiang Huang,Minfeng Chen,Qinghua Tian,Jizhang Chen

Due to their low cost, high safety, environmental friendliness, and impressive electrochemical performances, aqueous zinc-ion batteries are considered promising alternative technologies to lithium-ion batteries for use in large-scale applications. However, existing aqueous zinc-ion batteries usually suffer from poor cyclability and cannot operate at subzero temperatures. Herein, to solve these problems, the electrolyte in aqueous zinc-ion batterie is optimized by adding the appropriate amounts of diethyl ether and ethylene glycol. Results show that the addition of 1% diethyl ether contributes to the best cyclability at 25 °C. Furthermore, the addition of 30% ethylene glycol results in the best electrochemical performances at 0 and − 10 °C. This significant performance improvement at low temperatures is ascribed to the high ionic conductivity of the modified electrolyte and the low charge transfer impedance of the battery with the modified electrolyte at 0 and −10 °C. It is also shown that the modified electrolyte can decrease the nucleation overpotential of zinc plating, enhance the interfacial stability between the zinc metal and electrolyte, suppress the zinc dendritic growth and side reactions, and decrease the self-corrosion rate of the zinc anode. This work offers a facile strategy to realize aqueous zinc-ion batteries with excellent cyclability and antifreezing ability and may inspire research on other aqueous energy storage systems.
