Tactile sensory organs for three-dimensional (3D) force perception are essential for most living organisms and enable them to perform complex and sophisticated tasks to survive and evolve. Magnetic-based tactile sensors have been developed rapidly in recent years due to the exploitability of 3D force decoupling. Here, a method of magnet splicing is introduced, which can be applied to a magnetic tactile sensor to realize 3D self-decoupling of magnets’ displacements. This method enables the magnets to produce a completely consistent magnetic field distribution as the ideal magnetization model within a certain working range, eliminating the compensation and correction of the 3D magnetic flux density signal. This method carves out a new way for the practical application of 3D decoupling theory, showcasing the great potential in the fields of magnetic sensors and magnetic actuators.

Bionic electronic skin (e-skin) with intrinsic compressibility and stretchability holds significant potential in robotic haptics, enabling robots to perceive and interact with objects of various shapes effectively. However, creating a biomimetic e-skin with precise dual-signal decoupling remains a challenge. To address this, we present a bifunctional sensor inspired by the spider-hunting mechanism, which captures signals during predation. This sensor is constructed using pressure-stretched multilayer electrospinning of nanofibers-polyvinyl alcohol (CNC-PVA), followed by gas-phase polypyrrole (PPy) polymerization. The innovative superimposed design of the homologous multilayer sensing module, combined with a conductive nanofiber network structure, enables remarkable multi-signal self-decoupling capabilities. Key features of this sensor include high-pressure sensitivity (14.8 kPa −1 for 0–21 kPa) and an impressively fast response time of 57 ms. As a pressure sensor, it demonstrates repeatability over 5 cycles, while as a stretching sensor, it achieves high sensitivity (gauge factor, GF=1.22) and remains stable over 1000 cycles. Furthermore, this self-decoupled sensing system can independently detect dual signals (shape and weight of objects), thereby empowering robots to recognize and handle various objects more effectively. This multifunctional, low-cost sensor offers an advanced solution to overcome problems in functional e-skin for enhanced robotic object manipulation and recognition capabilities.

The rapid development of ocean exploration and underwater robot technology has put forward new requirements for underwater sensing methods, which can be used for hydrodynamic characteristics perception, underwater target tracking, and even underwater cluster communication. Here, inspired by the specialized undulated surface structure of the seal whisker and its ability to suppress vortex-induced vibration, a multidirectional hydrodynamic sensor based on biomimetic whisker array structure and magnetic 3D self-decoupling theory is introduced. The magnetic-based sensing method enables wireless connectivity between the magnetic functional structures and electronics, simplifying device design and endowing complete watertightness. The 3D self-decoupling capability enables the sensor, like a seal or other organisms, to perceive arbitrary whisker motions caused by the action of water flow without complex calibration and additional sensing units. The whisker sensor is capable of detecting a variety of hydrodynamic information, including the velocity (RMSE < 0.061 m s −1 ) and direction of the steady flow field, the frequency (error < 0.05 Hz) of the dynamic vortex wake, and the orientation (error < 7°) of the vortex wake source, demonstrating its extensive potential for underwater environmental perception and communication, especially in deep sea conditions.

Wearable 3D motion capture is a critical technology that underpins human–machine interactions, metaversing, and telemedicine. However, most existing sensors face challenges in achieving accurate vector perception and efficient decoupling of 3D motion. In this study, self-decoupled 3D motion sensors are constructed by vertically integrating uniaxial pressure- and biaxial strain-sensing units based on ordered conductive fibers. The developed sensors can specifically perceive body movements and automatically decompose them into a normal-pressure component and two planar-strain components along three orthogonal axes, with the intensities of the three-axis signals indicating the motion amplitude and direction. Notably, the sensors exhibit a directional resolution of 2°, with detection ranges of 100 kPa for stress and 100% for strain, whereas the crosstalk between the two units remains at 2.08% of the full scale. Furthermore, a wearable 3D motion-capture system is developed, enabling the acquisition of comprehensive movement data, including amplitudes and directions, with an accuracy of 99% for recognizing motion modes. The real-time reconstruction and visual synchronization of body postures are demonstrated in the virtual reality environment. This study offers an alternative perspective on wearable 3D motion capture for widespread applications in intelligent societies.
