Smart materials that can respond to multistimuli have been broadly studied. However, the smart materials that can spontaneously answer the ever-changing inner environment of living bodies have not been reported. Here, we report a strategy based on the dynamic chemistry to develop possible self-adapting solid materials that can automatically change shape without external stimuli, as organisms do. The self-adapting property of a chitosan-based self-healing hydrogel has been rediscovered since its dynamic Schiff-base network confers the unique mobility to that solid gel. As a result, the hydrogel can move slowly, like an octopus climbing through a narrow channel, only following the natural forces of surface tension and gravity. The fascinating self-adapting feature enables this hydrogel as an excellent drug carrier for the in vivo wound treatment. In a healing process of the rat-liver laceration, this self-adapting hydrogel demonstrated remarkable superiority over traditional drug delivery methods, suggesting the great potential of this self-adapting hydrogel as a promising new material for biomedical applications. We believe the current research revealed a possible strategy to achieve self-adapting materials and may pave the way toward the further development, study, and application of new-generation smart materials.

Herein, we report a microenvironment self-adaptive multifunctional hydrogel (GBOD-PF) dressing with intrinsic hemostasis, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that promotes collagen deposition, activates the immune response, and angiogenesis, accelerates large-scale chronic wound healing. To address these needs, aldehyde-functionalized dextran (ODT) was first synthesized through oxidation, and an injectable hydrogel was prepared by mixing Gel and ODT solutions in the presence of borax and paeoniflorin (PF) through the formation of dynamic Schiff base bonds (GBOD-PF). This multifunctional hydrogel exhibits remodeling and self-healing properties, enhanced adhesion strength and biocompatibility. Moreover, it possesses broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and superior hemostasis, providing early-stage protection for complex wounds. Notably, GBOD-PF targets the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, a core mediator of inflammation, thereby dampening the inflammatory cascade. The results demonstrate the application of the GBOD-PF hydrogel in an infection wound and diabetic model wound healing model, which enhanced immune response, induced M1-to-M2 macrophage repolarization to establish anti-inflammatory microenvironment, regulated MMP-9, promoted angiogenesis, thereby inducing a pro-regenerative response. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the treatment of chronic wound repair and tissue regeneration.

Diabetic infected wounds struggle to self-heal due to hyperglycemia, bacterial infection, and lack of effective treatments. Herein, a hyaluronic-based self-adaptable (HASA) hydrogel was developed via the host–guest interaction between γ-cyclodextrin (γCD) and coumarin. The reversible host–guest linkers conferred the HASA hydrogel with high network dynamics, enabling excellent injectability and shape adaptability. By encapsulating the levofloxacin (LEV) within the γCD cavity and incorporating the insulin (INS) into the hydrogel network, a dual drug-loaded HASA (HASA@LEV&INS) hydrogel was easily fabricated. Owing to its efficient enzymatic degradation and drug release properties, the HASA@LEV&INS hydrogel showed remarkable abilities in inhibiting bacterial growth and upregulating cell activity under high-glucose conditions. In treating diabetic infected wounds, the HASA@LEV&INS hydrogel achieved a wound contraction rate of up to 96.8% by day 14, demonstrating enhanced wound healing efficacy. This work provides a promising strategy for accelerating the healing of diabetic infected wounds.

Neovascularization is critical to improve the diabetic microenvironment, deliver abundant nutrients to the wound and promote wound closure. However, the excess of oxidative stress impedes the healing process. Herein, a self-adaptive multifunctional hydrogel with self-healing property and injectability is fabricated through a boronic ester-based reaction between the phenylboronic acid groups of the 3-carboxyl-4-fluorophenylboronic acid -grafted quaternized chitosan and the hydroxyl groups of the polyvinyl alcohol, in which pro-angiogenic drug of desferrioxamine (DFO) is loaded in the form of gelatin microspheres ( [email protected] ). The boronic ester bonds of the hydrogel can self-adaptively react with hyperglycemic and hydrogen peroxide to alleviate oxidative stress and release [email protected] in the early phase of wound healing. A sustained release of DFO is then realized by responding to overexpressed matrix metalloproteinases. In a full-thickness diabetic wound model, the [email protected] loaded hydrogel accelerates angiogenesis by upregulating expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 and angiogenic growth factors, resulting in collagen deposition and rapid wound closure. This multifunctional hydrogel can not only self-adaptively change the microenvironment to a pro-healing state by decreasing oxidative stress, but also respond to matrix metalloproteinases to release DFO. The self-adaptive multifunctional hydrogel has a potential for treating diabetic wounds.

Human–machine interaction plays a significant role in promoting convenience, production efficiency, and usage experience. Because of the universality and characteristics of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, active EEG interaction is a promising and cutting-edge method for human–machine interaction. The seamless, skin-compliant, and motion-robust human–machine interface (HMI) for active EEG interaction has been in focus. Herein, we report a self-adaptive HMI (PAAS-MXene hydrogel) that can activate rapid gelation (5 s) using MXene cross-linking and conformably self-adapt to the scalp to help improve signal transduction. In addition to exhibiting satisfactory skin compliance, appropriate adhesion, and good biocompatibility, PAAS-MXene has demonstrated electrical performance reliability, such as low impedance (<50 Ω) at physiologically relevant frequencies, stable polarization potential (the rate of change is less than 6.5 × 10–4 V/min), negligible ion conductivity, and impedance change after 1000 stretch cycles, thereby realizing acquisition of EEG signals. In addition, a cap-free EEG signal acquisition method based on PAAS-MXene has been proposed. These findings confirm the high-precision detection ability of PAAS-MXene for electrocardiogram signals and EEG signals. Therefore, PAAS-MXene offers an option to actively control intention, motion, and vision through active EEG signals.
