Microcracks on the surface and inside inevitably occur during processing and use. The use of photo-initiated, self-healing, self-warning microcapsules to repair and monitor these microcracks is of practical importance to prolong the life of coated fabrics. In this work, the microcapsules (EP/FA/SiO 2 ) with SiO 2 as wall material, epoxy resin , fluorescent agent and cationic photoinitiator as core material were prepared using the interfacial in situ polymerization method . The self-healing self-warning PVC coated fabric was obtained by scraper coating method. The self-healing, self-warning and mechanical properties of the coated fabric were characterized. The results show that the microcapsules have an encapsulation efficiency of 79 % and a core-wall structure. The wall thickness is about 200 nm and the particle size is 1.7 μm. The microcapsules have excellent thermal stability below 320 °C. The microcapsules have good dispersion in the PVC coating surface and the repair agent has good wettability in the PVC coating surface . When the cuts expand, the previously embedded microcapsules break open and release the fluorescent active ingredient and the repair agent of the capsule core. Under UV light irradiation, the scratches may show a yellow fluorescence to indicate the location of the damage to the coating. The repair agent (epoxy resin) fills the cuts and then polymerizes with the cationic photoinitiator under UV light. As the exposure time increases, the cut gradually narrows and the strength of the coated fabric increases. After 36 h of UV exposure, the cut disappears and the strength of the coated fabric is 742 N, reaching the strength (768 N) of the fabric before scratching. This indicates that the coated fabric has a good photo-initiated self-healing effect.

Smart polymeric coatings with early corrosion self-warning and damage self-repairing characteristics have garnered tremendous interest due to their ability to sense corrosion reactions and repair coating defects. However, tracking the repair process and its underlying protection mechanism is highly challenging. Herein, we report the construction of a novel composite coating by incorporating multifunctional nanosensors (graphene oxide-zeolitic imidazole frameworks loaded with 1,10-phenanthroline) into a thermo-responsive polyurethane. Under damaging events, the localized acidity derived from metal corrosion stimulates the decomposition of the nanosensors to produce 1,10-phenanthroline and benzimidazole. The generated ferrous ions are rapidly sensed by the released 1,10-phenanthroline to produce a conspicuous red color, which warns of the corrosion occurrence. In profiting from the photothermal effect of graphene oxide, the composite coating exhibits efficient crack closure behavior under near-infrared light irradiation. Morphology observation indicates that a coating scratch (about 30 μm wide) almost closed with 20 s of irradiation. The photothermally activated crack closure combined with benzimidazole inhibition endows the prepared coating with superior self-repairing performance. Interestingly, the change in color intensity around the coating defect can assist in tracking the repair process. Therefore, this work provides a novel strategy to visualize microscopic behaviors during damage and repair processes.

The corrosion and damage from the environment directly reduce the lifespan of metal-based absorbing materials, severely limiting their widespread application. Designing a novel system to promptly alert against corrosion, subsequently offer corrosion inhibition after the alert to create a window for artificial repair of the materials, this would be a completely new approach. Herein, a “microcapsule-type” multifunctional absorbing material (CIP-M) is obtained. CIP-M is composed of self-warning and anticorrosive core material, Fe 3+ responsive inner shell, and microwave absorbing CIP particles outer shell. The multifunctional CIP-M in coating (CIP-M-EP) exhibits a significant fluorescence self-warning effect under 254 nm light in the early stages of corrosion. Meaningfully, thanks to the 3D CIP core–shell structure, the maximum reflection loss of CIP-M-EP is up to −35.96 dB, much higher than other coatings. Meantime, once corrosion occurs, the corrosion resistance properties of CIP-M greatly inhibit further the attack by the corrosion medium. CIP-M-EP coating maintains higher impedance modulus at 0.01 Hz and microwave absorbing performances during the first 45 days of corrosion, providing sufficient time for artificial repair of the coating. More interestingly, CIP-M also endows materials with good flexibility, anti-counterfeiting, and information encryption functions. These effective extend the application fields of CIP-M.

Corrosion of metal materials has become a major challenge for marine facilities. Traditional anti-corrosion coatings cannot detect local corrosion in time, leading to significant maintenance costs. Therefore, providing an intelligent response performance to traditional anticorrosive coatings is essential. This study proposes an intelligent epoxy anticorrosion system based on the dual-mode response mechanism of visual color development and fluorescence quenching. The molecular structure was designed with the combination of 1,10-phenanthroline-5-amine (APhen) and E44 epoxy resin through a simple ring-opening reaction to obtain modified epoxy resin (EAPhen). The intelligent responsiveness of the epoxy resin was achieved through a simple and efficient complexation reaction. Subsequently, under the curing crosslinking of polyether amine D400, an epoxy resin anticorrosive coating (EAD-x) with excellent mechanical properties and visual response to corrosion products (Fe 2+ ) was prepared. Furthermore, the high crosslinking density and dense three-dimensional network structure provided EAD-4 coating with good physical barrier properties. Additionally, APhen and local corrosion product Fe 2+ were able to form a passivation layer protective film after a complexing reaction. The synergistic effect of these mechanisms gave the epoxy resin excellent corrosion resistance. After 7 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the |Z| 0.01 Hz value of the EAD-4 coating remained as high as 2.56 × 10 11 Ω•cm 2 . Moreover, due to the “pinning” effect of E44, the adhesion level of EAD-4 coating to the substrate reached 5 B. In conclusion, this study provides a concept for realizing the visual self-warning function of local corrosion which is expected to offer a more reliable and efficient anti-corrosion protection scheme for marine engineering facilities while promoting sustainable development in this field.

Interface defects can significantly diminish the protective performance of a system. Specifically, coating aging is accelerated markedly by UV radiation, high temperature, high humidity, and microbial attack. To address these issues, this study develops a functional integrated intelligent coating with anti-corrosion and anti-fouling capabilities (SCC/ZPhP) via interfacial reinforcement and multi-component composite engineering. In this system, sericite (SC) acts as both a barrier and a loading platform, aiming to enhance the coating’s barrier performance while mitigating particle aggregation. Furthermore, constructing a Ce/Zn heterostructure (C/Z) reduces the composite’s band gap ( E g ), which effectively promotes charge separation and improves photocatalytic and photocathodic protection properties. 1,10-Phenanthroline encapsulated in polyacrylic acid (PhP) exhibits pH-responsive behavior, enabling on-demand release of the active component. The resulting red coloration facilitates visual identification of corrosion areas and supports self-healing protective effects. Compared to epoxy coatings (EP), the SCC/ZPhP coating demonstrates better weathering and anti-aging performance, maintaining impedance modulus of 10 1 ⁰ Ω·cm 2 and 10 11 Ω·cm 2 after the exposure period. Moreover, the incorporation of active factors endows the coating with excellent anti-fouling capabilities, achieving an antimicrobial rate of up to 98%. This effectively inhibits the adhesion and accumulation of marine organisms, thereby significantly reducing the risk of structural damage. Therefore, this study proposes a novel design strategy for developing multifunctional intelligent protective coatings with anti-corrosion and anti-fouling functionalities. Such coatings offer promising potential to extend the service life and enhance the structural stability of offshore engineering systems. Graphical abstract
