In this work, we investigated the abatement of highly concentrated 1H-Benzotriazole (BTA) in aqueous solution by ozonation. Focusing on the COD removal and BTA degradation, the effects of different operational factors were explored, including different initial BTA concentrations (100–1000 mg/L), ozone dosages (16–48 mg/min) and initial pH values (3–11). It was found that the degradation of BTA was obviously affected by the initial concentration of BTA, pH value and O 3 dosage. And the optimized pH value was observed at 11. The increasing of ozone dosage and the pH value would accelerate the degradation efficiency of BTA and COD removal, while the increasing of initial BTA concentration would hamper this process. Based on the effects of ozone dosage, initial BTA concentration and initial pH value, a kinetic model was established with the function of C = C 0 exp(−8.68Q O3 2.4997 C 0 −2.1262 [OH − ] 0.0444 t).

The present study applied the ozonation process to degrade 2,4-di- tert -butylphenol (2,4-DTBP), an emerging micropollutant detected in typical bamboo pulp and papermaking wastewater (BPPW). The effects of various influencing factors on the degradation performance and corresponding degradation mechanism were investigated. The results showed that ozone could degrade 2,4-DTBP rapidly with a reaction rate constant of (1.80 ± 0.05) × 10 5 M –1 ·s –1 . The removal efficiency of 2,4-DTBP (5 mg/L) could reach 100% when the ozone dosage exceed 6 mg/L in a neutral medium. The presence of coexisting chemicals in BPPW such as Cl – and HCO 3 – promoted the removal performance of 2,4-DTBP. In contrast, NH 4 + and humic acid presented inhibition on 2,4-DTBP removal. The ozonation of 2,4-DTBP was dominated by the ozone molecule, and this was primarily attributed to electrophilic substitution and 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions. Twenty-seven kinds of intermediate products were identified by UPLC-Q-TOF/MS. The variations in their productions were based on the changes in ozone dosage. The degradation pathways were proposed. The toxicity of 2,4-DTBP was weakened after ozonation. As for the ozonation of actual biochemical effluent of BPPW, the desirable treatment performance was obtained. This study proved the feasibility of ozonation and provided data basis for subsequent pilot study.

Dioxolanes, which are structural analogs to dioxane, are emerging persistent mobile organic contaminants. These compounds are frequently detected in water and wastewater, but their removal has been rarely addressed in the literature. This work systematically investigated the ozonation of two representative dioxolanes, i.e., 1,3-dioxolane (1,3-D) and 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane (2-M-1,3-D). The degradation rates of two dioxolanes exhibited a positive correlation with both ozone dosage and solution pH increment. Specifically, direct ozone oxidation dominates the degradation of dioxolanes at slightly acidic pH, while hydroxyl radical ( • OH) becomes the primary oxidant under weak alkaline condition. The second-order reaction rate constants of ozone with 1,3-D and 2-M-1,3-D were determined to be 5.48 and 8.00 M −1 s −1 , respectively. The reaction rate constants with • OH were 9 orders of magnitude higher, reaching (3.75-8.18) × 10 9 and (2.65-5.78) × 10 9 M −1 s −1 for 1,3-D and 2-M-1,3-D, respectively. A kinetic model involving 112 reactions well simulated the degradation of 1,3-D and 2-M-1,3-D under various conditions accordingly. Eight transformation products were identified totally, and seven of them (i.e., formic acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxylic acid, and 1,2-ethanediol monoacetate) were quantified. The observed evolution of these identified degradation products concludes that the degradation of 1,3-D and 2-M-1,3-D during ozonation mainly involves H-abstraction, dimerization, ring opening, disproportionation, and hydrolysis. This work not only provides essential kinetic data of dioxolanes, but also sheds light on their potential transformation mechanisms and aquatic environment risks during ozonation process.
