Molecular structure transformation is a critical step for synthesis of aviation biofuels from triglycerides, to yield alkanes, aromatics and cycloalkanes. To this end, triglycerides were treated by catalytic cracking coupled with rectification to obtain hydrocarbon fuels, and the molecular weight of the liquid product was adjusted to the desirable boiling range of aviation fuel. To further modify the molecular structures, the pyrolytic hydrocarbons were partially converted into aromatics and cycloalkanes by a two-step process. Different raw materials including soybean oil, rubber seed oil, waste cooking oil and acidified oil were cracked with a 5 wt% base catalyst at 350–450 °C (under the atmospheric pressure) in a benchtop reactor. Afterwards, the linear hydrocarbons of C8–C15 size were transformed into aromatics by HZSM-5 at 350 °C for 6 h. Then, a portion of the aromatics were converted into cycloalkanes catalyzed by Pd/AC at 200 °C and 6 MPa (H2) for 6 h. As a result, a desirable mixture of linear hydrocarbons, aromatics and cycloalkanes was obtained with a similar composition and properties to traditional fossil aviation fuels.

The aerospace industry has extremely strict requirements for metal materials, especially the stability of the material at a low temperature and in harsh environment. Herein, superhydrophobic anti-icing aluminum sheets are fabricated with traditional hydrothermal reaction and modified by (heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetradecyl) triethoxysilane (AC-FAS). Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are used to analyze the surface morphology and chemical compositions. The satisfactory properties of superhydrophobicity and anti-icing result from its dense microcosmic array structure and its low surface energy. The prepared superhydrophobic aluminum surface can realize wettability alteration, in which the contact angle increases from 118° on the original aluminum sheets to 155° with a rolling angle of 10°. In addition, the prepared superhydrophobic surface has anti-icing and self-cleaning ability. According to the aforementioned results, it is believed that the superhydrophobic aluminum sheets can be an excellent candidate in the aerospace field.

Spray droplet size is an important factor affecting spray drift, which is directly related to the spray effect and efficiency by unmanned aerial vehicle . Effect of adjuvants on the droplet size of emamectin benzoate dilute emulsion was systematically investigated by measuring droplet size, dynamic surface tension , and rheology. The results showed that droplet size was independent of dynamic surface tension and viscosity, but was related to the viscoelastic property and strain. For the emulsions with N, N-dimethyldodecylamine-N-oxid (OA), polyalkoxylated butyl ether (LQ) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), the viscous modulus (G′′) were higher than elastic modulus (G′) under the crossover frequency, indicating that the emulsions were the viscous liquid. Furthermore, the diluted emulsions with OA and LQ had small drop, while that with PVA had big drop. These leaded to the breakup of the liquid sheet at lower deformation and the small spray droplet formation. While emulsions containing Guar gum 2-hydroxy-3-(trimethylammonio) propyl ether chloride (Gum Cl) and Sil800 (silicone adjuvant) exhibited a weak elastic behavior, and had the large droplet size. In addition, compared to the emulsions with OA, LQ and PVA, the dilute emulsions with Gum Cl and Sil800 had the large drop diameter, and G′ had a rapid decrease at bigger strain. This suggested the dilute emulsions with Gum Cl and Sil800 had a high stability during atomization . The study would provide a useful guide for selecting drift control adjuvants and raising pesticide efficiency.

The aqueous fraction of bio-oil from biomass fast pyrolysis mainly contains low-molecular-weight oxygenates such as carboxylic acids, ketones, aldehydes, phenols, and furans. In this study, the full components of aqueous bio-oil are directionally converted into carbonyl groups such as aldehydes and ketones, and then the oxygen-containing precursors of aviation fuel are prepared through coupling, focusing on exploring the mechanism of carbonylation and C–C coupling. Studies have revealed that propionic acid, furfural, and phenol can be directionally converted into ketones, in which reaction 3-pentanone, cyclopentanone, and cyclohexanone were formed via ketonization and hydrogenation in the aqueous phase. Then the two components of 3-pentanone, cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, acetone, and acetaldehyde were subjected to aldol condensation to explore the C–C coupling mechanism in the preparation of the C7–C18 precursor of aviation fuel. The mechanism in the high-quality utilization of all components of the aqueous phase bio-oil fraction was explored, which was favorable for the synthesis of biomass-based aviation fuel.

Thermal conductivity of kerosene-based nanofluids is experimentally studied in the paper. Aluminum (Al), alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles were dispersed respectively in RP3 aviation kerosene, and thermal conductivity of those nanofluids was measured in a wide range of fluid temperature and particle mass fraction. The increase rate of thermal conductivity of kerosene-based nanofluids reached 60% at a temperature of 403 K. The thermal conductivity of nanofluids changes with different particles, particle size, particle concentration and temperature et al. The change rules are given in this paper in detail. Meanwhile, the experimental results of thermal conductivity are compared with the theoretical model proposed in our previous work originally for water-based nanofluids, and the comparison results are found to be good.

Catalytic conversion of biomass to liquid fuel is one of critical part to ease dependence on fossil fuel. Herein, a route of transformation of biomass-derived furfural and levulinic acid into long-chain hydrocarbon fuels was developed. A C20 oxygenate with 95 % mol yield was firstly synthesized through condensation-polymerization reactions catalyzed by NaOH. Various techniques were employed to verify the chemical structure of the C20 oxygenate. The condensation mixture was then directly subjected to hydrodeoxygenation reaction to prepare long-chain hydrocarbons with a catalytic system of Pd/C and H 3 PO 4 in aqueous phase. A 57.1 % weight yield of liquid fuel was obtained with main products of C12, C14, and C18 hydrocarbons. The mass percent of carbon and hydrogen in fuel was significant improved to 95.91 %, as well as the high heat value was increased to 47.04 MJ/kg.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a promising solution for reducing aviation-related carbon emissions. However, conventional SAF production methods such as waste oil aromatization face challenges like complex processing requirements and the generation of unwanted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study presents a novel, aromatization-free approach to SAF production by co-upcycling waste oils and polystyrene (PS) plastics. The inherent aromatic ring structures in PS plastics are utilized to directly form aromatic hydrocarbons, bypassing the need for traditional aromatization. A two-stage pressurized fixed-bed reactor was employed, where waste oils and PS underwent co-hydropyrolysis to generate intermediates, followed by gas-phase catalytic hydrogenation. Under optimized conditions (0.15 MPa H 2 , 480 °C for co-hydropyrolysis, 350 °C for hydrogenation, and 5 mg Pd/SBA-15 catalyst), this process yielded 71.0 wt% C 8 -C 16 jet fuel components, with 84.5 % selectivity. In comparison, catalysts with higher acidity, such as Pd/HZSM-5 and Pd/USY, promoted side reactions like cracking, leading to lower liquid yields (35.7 wt% and 18.1 wt%, respectively) and a more complex product mixture. Additionally, Pd/SBA-15 catalyst demonstrated excellent stability, maintaining consistent catalytic performance over 10 repeated cycles, and showed potential for scalability with a variety of waste plastics and oils. The study underscores the feasibility of co-upcycling waste oils and PS plastics, offering an efficient, sustainable pathway to streamline SAF production while reducing the environmental impacts associated with conventional methods.

Production of alternative, clean aviation fuel from biomass synthesis gas via Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis has attracted much attention. In this paper, Al-SBA-15 supported cobalt catalysts with different Al/Si ratios were successfully prepared for the production of aviation fuel by FT synthesis. The physical and acidic properties of the Co/Al-SBA-15 catalysts were characterized by XRF, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, TEM, H2-TPR, 27Al NMR, NH3-TPD, and Py-FTIR. The formation of long-chain hydrocarbons was inhibited by the ordered mesoporous structure. Fischer–Tropsch activity and selectivity were demonstrated to be affected by the acidity of the Al-SBA-15 supports. The selectivity turned to lighter iso-paraffin products. Co-based catalyst with Al/Si ratio of 0.01 exhibited the highest selectivity (52.4%) for aviation fuel (C8–C18 products) and much higher ratio of iso-paraffin/normal-paraffin (iso/n) (20.2%). This study might provide useful information for the selective production of aviation fuel via FT synthesis.

The catalytic conversion of renewable biomass-derived aldehydes and ketones to aviation fuels is very attractive for sustainable development. We provided insight into the production of aviation fuel from typical biomass carbonyl platform compounds (furfural, acetone, butanone, and butyraldehyde) by aldol condensation followed with hydrodeoxygenation over bifunctional catalyst Ni/Mg–Al-O/AC, focusing on the mechanism of condensation reaction. It was found that high temperature is not only conducive to aggravate the depth of aldehyde ketone condensation reaction, further convert dimer to trimer, but also promote its self-condensation. The optimal condensation temperature of aldehydes and ketones under this idea was 170 °C, the carbon number range of the jet fuel intermediates was C7–C14, and the yield of condensates reached 79.23%. In order to explore the mechanism in the aldol condensation of aldehydes and ketones, the evolution law of typical products was studied by controlling the reaction time, and seven main condensation pathways were proposed. The ratios of aldehyde/ketone in the reactant and the ratios of each component within the aldehyde and ketone were adjusted, and it was found that the reaction priority of chain aldehydes is the highest in this reaction system, and the reaction priority of small-molecule ketones with low carbon number is higher than that of high carbon number ketones. The presence of long-chain groups in the hydrogenated oil increased the density of jet fuel, and it has a higher calorific value, which are very promising as aviation fuels or additives of aviation bio-fuels.

The carbonyl platform compound from the catalytic pyrolysis of holocellulose was employed for the integrated aldol condensation and hydrogenation to produce hydrocarbons in the range of jet fuel. By the carbonylation of the pyrolysis vapor from holocellulose prepared from rape straw, bagasse and poplar (RS-Holo, BG-Holo and PL-Holo), it was revealed that BG-Holo rich in cellulose as the raw material presented the most production of carbonyl compounds including aldehydes and ketones. The optimal temperature for carbonylation of pyrolysis vapor from holocellulose was determined to be 400 °C, with the maximized carbon yield of carbonyls reaching 46.11%, which was boosted to the summit of 53.59% with more addition of ZrO 2 catalyst. The integrated aldol condensation and hydrogenation were carried out using the catalytic pyrolysis bio-oil as the reactant over Ni/Mg-Al-O/AC bifunctional catalyst, with the highest carbon yield of hydrocarbons reaching 78.11%. The production mechanism of the final targeted alkanes was speculated, and it was discovered that ketones and aldehydes with short carbon chains are more prone to secondary condensation than those with long carbon chains, resulting in high-energy–density aviation fuel. Furthermore, the heating value of final oil was calculated based on an empirical formula, which was comparable to that of Jet A, meeting the standard of ASTM7566. The final oil’s distillation range distribution was simulated, and most of it fell in the range of aviation fuel. In this study, catalytic fast pyrolysis of holocellulose followed by integrated aldol condensation and hydrogenation was proved to be a promising way for producing aviation fuel.

Heavy bio-oil based carbon material (HBC) was prepared via carbonization and activation, and the basic Mg-Al-O/HBC using HBC as the carrier was synthesized for the first time for the aldol condensation of cyclopentanone to produce aviation fuel precursor. It revealed that a higher carbonization temperature and heating rate led to the decreasing production of biochar. HBC presented the highest specific surface area (2046.92 m 2 /g) and total pore volume (1.2964 cm 3 /g) at the carbonization temperature of 700 °C, the heating rate of 15 °C/min, A/C ratio of 3:1, and the activation temperature of 800 °C, in which the largest proportion of micropores was 87.19%. Compared with Mg-Al-O, a higher strength of weak and moderate basic sites was found in Mg-Al-O/HBC, which was beneficial for the aldol condensation. A higher yield of targeted condensates in the range of C9∼C16 was achieved at 87.28% in the aldol condensation of cyclopentanone over Mg-Al-O/HBC catalyst. However, the condensation performance of the composite catalysts decreased seriously in the 5th run, which was related closely to the appearance of boehmite AlO(OH) and the pore blockage of HBC. To match the basic catalyst and HBC carrier well from the viewpoint of pore property, Al ions were substituted with Zr ions, and the yield of the target condensates over Mg-Zr-O/HBC was kept stably at 72.07% at the fifth use. This study provides a unique, viable and effective method to produce porous carbon from heavy fraction of bio-oil as the carbon source, and also its good application in the production of high-valued fuels.

The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignocellulose-based furan compounds holds significant potential for the synthesis of aviation fuel. However, challenges such as high catalyst costs and low yields persist. This study proposes a two-step strategy, involving pre-hydrogenation followed by HDO, to convert the C 15 condensation product derived from furfural and levulinic acid into hydrocarbons within the aviation fuel range. A Ni-based catalyst supported on zirconium phosphate (ZrP) with the incorporation of Nb 2 O 5 was synthesized. At 340 °C, 4 MPa H 2 , and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) = 14.9, using Ni-Nb 2 O 5 /ZrP as the catalyst for HDO, considering the pre-hydrogenation, the overall yield of alkanes in the C 10 –C 15 jet fuel range from solid condensation products FLF is 62.4%, with a yield of C 15 alkanes of 16.2% and C 14 alkanes of 25.2%. A series of characterizations and comparative experiments were carried out. Experimental studies have demonstrated that doping with Nb 2 O 5 plays a crucial role in enhancing the HDO performance. The characterization results indicate that the introduction of an appropriate amount of Nb 2 O 5 increased the electron density of ZrP, enriched the catalyst's acidic sites, in addition, the ratio of Bronsted acid to Lewis acid sites in the catalyst increases. Finally, a brief analysis of industrialization potential was conducted.
