Energy storage materials show enormous potential for the development of energy-saving buildings. However, high-performance composite phase-change materials (PCMs) usually exhibit complex and low photothermal conversion efficiencies. This significantly hinders their application in the construction field. Herein, we reported an effective strategy to construct attapulgite, expanded perlite, and graphite (AEG) ternary composite mineral microspheres through spray drying. Supporting materials were selected to integrate the unique advantages of the materials and achieve a functional design with synergistic benefits. Paraffin–AEG (P-AEG) composite PCMs with light-to-heat conversion and thermal energy storage functions were fabricated via vacuum impregnation. The prepared P-AEG exhibited an excellent light–thermal conversion capability, with a conversion efficiency as high as 92%. In addition, the thermal energy storage building materials constructed with the P-AEG composite PCMs and concrete (P-AEG-C) exhibited exceptional thermal management abilities. At the peak position in the heating stage and the bottom position in the cooling stage, the temperature of the P-AEG-C was 3.9 °C lower and 7.5 °C higher than that of concrete, respectively. The P-AEG-C exhibited excellent mechanical properties with a compressive strength of 14.8 MPa, and thus, it has enormous potential in light–thermal conversion applications and energy-saving buildings.

Space cooling and heating consume huge energy resources globally, while existing cooling/heating equipment can only address indoor temperature control. In this work, we report a multifunctional layered Janus-coated fabric (JCF) with radiative cooling/solar heating/Joule heating, which can utilize space and the sun as a source of cooling and heating. By adjusting the reflectivity, emissivity, and absorptivity of the coating, the fabric performs a thermal management function in a complex and changeable environment without consuming energy. In cooling mode, the cooling layer achieves a high solar reflectivity of 96% and an infrared emissivity of 96%, resulting in a 3.1 °C reduction in ambient temperature without any convective shielding. In addition, it reduces temperatures by 1.6 °C on human arms and by 5.1 °C inside houses, respectively. In the heating mode, the heating layer demonstrates excellent light-to-heat conversion efficiency under direct sunlight, achieving a 13.3 °C radiation warming ability, 16 °C heating effect on the surface of the arm, and a 12.8 °C temperature increase in the house. Furthermore, when switched to active heating for temperature regulation, JCF exhibits fast electrical response, high-efficiency electrical heat conversion capability, and stable electrical heat circulation capability. Building energy simulations indicate that widespread deployment of JCF across China could lead to a reduction in cooling and heating energy consumption by more than 25 MJ/m2 in 80% of cities. This multifunctional Janus-coated fabric not only provides a viable engineering path for the practical application of radiative heat management technology but also demonstrates its potential applications in human thermal comfort, smart wearable and building energy efficiency.

The energy shortage crisis is one of the main challenges facing human society. Energy storage blanket (ESB) based on phase change material (PCM) and transparent heat-insulating glass (HIG) based on selective light-absorbing materials show great potential in regulating temperature and reducing building energy consumption. However, the stability of ESB and HIG is insufficient, and there is often a substantial indoor temperature difference when ESB and HIG are applied alone. In this research, stability-enhanced HIG and ESB were prepared. The oxidation and the decline in the heat insulation ability of HIG in air were solved by coating SiO 2 film on the surface of K x WO 3 nanoparticles. The low thermal conductivity and the deformation during the phase change process of ESB were solved by encapsulating PCM with expanded graphite . The combined use of HIG and ESB (HIG-ESB) reduces the temperature difference in the test room from 5.9 to 0.5 °C and the maximum indoor temperature from 50.5–56.4 °C to 28.5–28.9 °C. The energy-saving rates of ESB, HIG, and HIG-ESB in different climatic regions of China are evaluated by numerical simulation. The results show that ESB can save energy in all regions, while the HIG increases energy consumption in cold areas and can achieve a stronger energy-saving effect than ESB in mild areas such as Hong Kong and Changsha.

The colored non-toxic near-infrared (NIR) reflective and infrared radiative pigments are desired in reducing the energy consumption of buildings. In this work, yttrium ferrite (YFeO 3 ) pigments with controllable crystalline structure were successfully synthesized via the method of solid-state reaction at low-heating temperature. The effects of the crystalline structure and microstructure, especially charge state distribution, on the bandgap, chromatic properties, infrared reflection and radiation performance of YFeO 3 pigments were investigated for the first time. With the calcining temperature increased, the structure of obtained pigments changed from hexagonal to orthorhombic, and the bandgap was obviously widened. The black hexagonal YFeO 3 pigments possessed small particle size, and their intensive optical absorption in the NIR range was related to the noticeable multiple reflections induced by the grain boundary. While, the brown orthorhombic YFeO 3 powdered pigments, as well as the corresponding pigmented coatings, possessed good NIR reflection characteristics, and the high solar reflectance values clearly highlight the potential of these pigments as cool pigments. In addition, the obtained YFeO 3 pigmented coatings showed high emissivity in 8–14 μm waveband (atmospheric window), indicating their potential applications in energy saving of buildings by combining NIR shielding and space cooling. The larger amount of Fe 2+ -Fe 3+ ions pairs in the orthorhombic pigments led to the enhancement of free carrier absorption, which enhanced infrared emission and contributed to the slightly decreased NIR reflectance.

Optically transparent wood has emerged as a promising glazing material. Thanks to the high optical transmittance, strong mechanical properties, and excellent thermal insulation capability of transparent wood, it offers a potential alternative to glass for window applications. Recently, thermo-, electro-, and photochromic transparent woods that dynamically modulate light transmittance have been investigated to improve building energy efficiency. However, it remains challenging to widely replace windows with transparent wood because of its poor weather resistance. In this study, an environment-friendly thermochromic transparent wood film (TTWF) with thermal switching of transmittance is proposed and demonstrated. To achieve thermochromism, the bleached wood is impregnated with the vanadium dioxide (VO2)/polyvinyl alcohol composite. Due to the self-densification of cellulose microfibrils during the evaporation of solvents, the transparent wood is in the form of thin films, which can be attached on the inner face of a window to protect it from severe weather conditions, making the installation convenient and low-cost. Furthermore, the surface of VO2-TTWF is modified by octadecyltrichlorosilane to enhance the waterproof ability and achieve self-cleaning and antidust functions. The proposed VO2-TTWF shows great potential for application in energy-efficient buildings using sustainable materials with advanced optical properties (i.e., Tlum = 50.5%, ΔTsol = 3.4%, and haze = 70%) that are mechanically robust (i.e., σ = 130.6 MPa along the wood growth direction), have low-thermal conductivity (i.e., K = 0.29 W m–1 K–1 along the perpendicular direction to the wood fibers), and demonstrate hydrophobic self-cleaning and antidust functions (i.e., contact angle: 121.9°). An experiment, using a model house, showed that the VO2-TTWF attached on the inner face of the window could significantly reduce the indoor air temperature by 33.9 °C compared with a bare glass panel, proving that VO2-TTWF has potential to be applied as a new-generation energy-efficient material for smart windows.

Graphical Looking through wood : Facile fabrication of transparent wood at any thickness of any size is reported. As the picture shows, compared with 1 mm-thick transparent wood (right), the 10 mm-thick transparent wood (left) still exhibits very high optical transmittance. Moreover, the preparation efficiency is much higher than the traditional method. As an energy-saving building material, transparent wood (TW) is highly attractive because of the advantages of high optical transmittance, excellent mechanical properties, and good thermal insulation. However, the current research is limited to fabricating small-size samples in the laboratory because thick or large-size transparent wood is almost impossible to be achieved. A method that can easily and efficiently produce transparent wood with any size and any thickness is desirable for practical applications. Transparent wood made from wood fibers as a substrate allows the cell walls to bind more tightly to the impregnated polymer, resulting in high light transmittance. Compared with wood prepared by using previously reported approaches, the transparent wood prepared by this new method not only retains the same advantages but also has higher preparation efficiency and is suitable for large-scale production. Under a simulated real environment, the retainability of indoor temperature by a sample house utilizing the transparent wood reveals excellent thermal insulation of the fiber-based transparent wood owing to its low thermal conductivity, showing significant benefits in saving thermal energy.

Chromogenic smart windows are one of the key components in improving the building energy efficiency. By simulation of the three-dimensional network of polymer hydrogels, thermal-responsive phase change materials (TRPCMs) are manufactured for energy-saving windows. For simulated polymer hydrogels, tetradecanol (TD) and a color changing dye (CCD) are filled in situ in poly(n-butyl isobutyrate) (PBB) networks. TRPCMs convert solar energy into thermal energy through a dark blue CCD. The TD phase change material (PCM) absorbs heat energy to become a transparent liquid. Simultaneously, the CCD changes from blue to colorless and transparent at around 45 °C. As a result, as-prepared TRPCMs transform from an opaque state at room temperature to a high-transparency state after melting (74.5%). TRPCMs also show a good thermal storage capacity, with a phase transition enthalpy exceeding 161.9 J g–1. As-prepared smart materials can simultaneously achieve photothermal conversion, thermal energy diffusion, latent heat storage, and resistance to liquid leakage at the phase interface between opaque and transparent states, providing more options for the design of energy-saving buildings.

The increasing energy consumption in buildings exacerbates the worldwide energy shortage and environmental pollution problems. To reduce the energy consumption, emerging thermal management technologies such as radiative cooling, thermal insulation, and phase change thermal regulation have been used in building envelopes. Most recently, aerogel-based tunable daytime radiative supercoolers have been proved to be an ideal candidate for energy consumption savings. Herein, a phase change material (PCM) enhanced thermostat for energy-efficient buildings is designed to go beyond the limitation of insulating radiative coolers. Compared to cutting-edge aerogel coolers, the proposed phase change thermostat featuring latent heat storage and release is capable of dynamically adjusting its thermal regulation performance along with the change of the environmental temperature, further absorbing the heat during the daylight for cooling and releasing the stored heat at night to suppress overcooling. The phase change thermostat with low thermal conductivity, high solar reflectance, considerable infrared emissivity, and high energy storage density shows great potential for all-day temperature-adaptive thermal management in energy-saving buildings.

Electro- and thermochromic materials have been greatly applied in smart windows and displays due to the excellent properties of color variation and solar radiation. However, the mono color and single response to voltage and temperature hinder their application and development. Here, a multimode dynamic color-changing device (T/ECD) was developed by integrating the electrochromic property of synthetic viologen dyes and the thermochromic properties of hydroxypropyl acrylate (HPA). The T/ECD achieves four modes of optical regulation, namely, colorless transparent state, tinted transparent state, colorless opaque state, and tinted opaque state, which can be regulated independently/coordinately using heat and voltage. The optimized T/ECD switched color at 1.2 V with 15 s or adjusted the transparent/opaque state at >34 °C with 46 s. In addition, based on the red viologen (ViO-R), green viologen (ViO-G), and blue viologen (ViO-B) dyes, colorful T/ECDs were successfully designed and fabricated, and T/ECDs have excellent cycling properties, expanding the application requirement. Moreover, we demonstrated their application in smart windows and privacy protection. The design philosophy and successful exploration have great prospects for energy-saving buildings, displays, and information masking/storage systems.

Transparent heat-insulation glass (HIG) with a highly selective light-absorbing coating and an energy-storage blanket (ESB) loaded with phase change materials show considerable potential in reducing building energy consumption. However, the energy-saving effect of a single material is usually not ideal, and the instability of HIG and ESB limits their applications. In this work, HIG with enhanced stability and a form-stable ESB was prepared. The temperature difference between various indoor areas and energy consumption were reduced simultaneously because of the temperature regulation function of the HIG and ESB in the light and dark areas. Na x WO 3 @SiO 2 -coated HIG showed excellent daylighting and near-infrared-light-shielding ability with visible light transmittance of 71% and near-infrared light transmittance of 16%, respectively. Moreover, polyethylene glycol/halloysite nanotube composite phase change material with a high enthalpy of 71.1 J/g and a suitable phase change temperature of 27.5 °C was prepared for the form-stable ESB. The test room experiment indicated that the combination of the HIG and ESB (HIG–ESB) reduced the indoor temperature difference from 6.8 °C to 0.9 °C and the maximum temperature by 33–40%. The energy consumption simulation revealed that the ESB can save energy in all selected cities, whereas HIG is only applicable to cities in warm regions. HIG–ESB achieved the highest annual energy-saving rate of 43.9% in Hong Kong. The joint application of the HIG and ESB provides a new strategy for developing passive energy-saving buildings.

In recent years, with the increasing demand for building energy efficiency and comfort in daily life, electrochromic smart windows have attracted widespread attention. Electrochromic smart windows utilize electrochromic material (ECM) technology to change the color or transparency of the window under the action of an electric field, thereby regulating the light and heat entering the room and achieving energy-saving effects. A bistable electrochromic material is a material that can switch between two color states and maintain one of these states without an external electric field. Although ECMs with bistable properties can significantly reduce energy consumption, current research on their application in smart windows is limited. Therefore, three conjugated extended viologen polymers with thiophene derivative bridges, PDV-MMA, PBV-MMA, and PTV-MMA, were designed and synthesized, and electrochromic devices (ECDs) were prepared. The introduction of thiophene derivatives not only prolongs the effective conjugated chain length of viologen, but also extends the electrochromic (EC) response to the near-infrared (NIR) region. In addition, by inserting different thiophene derivatives to separate the two pyridinium moieties, viologen polymers emit strong fluorescence that can be quenched by applying a negative voltage. The electrochromic device based on PDV-MMA material has fast response time (1.8 s), low turn-on voltage (−0.9 V), high color contrast (73.7%), high coloring efficiency (550 cm2/C), and cycling stability (3300 cycles). In addition, ECD based on PDV-MMA exhibits bistable characteristics, with only a 10% transmittance decay within 221 min, displaying clear patterns even after 20 h of power outage, and significantly reducing indoor temperature (7.0 °C) in simulated indoor environments. These characteristics make the application of electrochromic smart windows highly attractive in energy-efficient buildings. The study also demonstrated an intelligent window system driven by a solar cell (SC), further validating its feasibility in practical applications.
