In order to solve the environmental problems caused by landfilling and incineration of Fenton sludge, realize the recycling of papermaking solid waste. In this paper, we explored the formation of a layer of calcium carbonate coating on the surface of Fenton sludge by crystallization coating in the Fenton sludge-[Ca(OH) 2 /H 2 O]-CO 2 three-phase reaction system to improve the brightness of Fenton sludge and apply it to the filling of paper. The effects of particle size, temperature, stirring rate and calcium hydroxide addition on crystallization coating effect were studied. The advantages and disadvantages of the coating effect are mainly judged by the brightness and dustiness of the powder material. The research results show that when the particle size is 38–48 μm, the temperature is 25 °C, the stirring speed is 600 r/min, and the ratio of calcium hydroxide to Fenton sludge is 2:1, the brightness of the composite can be increased from 3.56 % ISO to 64.24 % ISO.

Herein, a biochar-supported zero-valent iron (ZVI) nanosheet catalyst (Fe@BC 2-2 ) for the activation of persulfate to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP) was prepared using industrial kraft lignin and Fenton sludge as carbon and iron sources, respectively. Fe@BC 2-2 showed considerably better CIP degradation efficiency (96.9% at 20 mg L −1 ) than traditional catalysts. Furthermore, Fe@BC 2-2 exhibited CIP degradation efficiency above 96% in a wide pH range (3–11) and high resistance to interference from various inorganic anions and humic acid even under real water body conditions. The Fe@BC 2-2 catalyst showed good magnetic separation performance and maintained high CIP degradation efficiency (87.0%) after five degradation–regeneration cycles. CIP degradation was facilitated by ZVI nanosheets along with functional groups and defects on the surface of the biochar. As determined through radical-quenching experiments, both radical and non-radical pathways contributed to the degradation of CIP, with the non-radical pathway being dominant, especially with singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the active species. The degradation pathway of CIP was inferred through the analysis of intermediate products, which showed lower toxicity than CIP. This work not only proposes a strategy for the utilization of traditional kraft pulping lignin and Fenton sludge but also presents an innovative catalyst for the degradation of antibiotics.

Fenton sludge generated in the flocculation stage of the Fenton oxidation process contains significant amounts of ferric iron and organic pollutants , which require proper treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated that adding Fenton sludge to an anaerobic digester can decompose some of the organic pollutants in the Fenton sludge to lower its environmental risk, but iron gradually accumulates in the reactor, which weakens the sustainability of the method. In this study, Fenton sludge was introduced into a hydrolytic acidification reactor with a weak acid environment to relieve the iron accumulation as well as improve the degradation of organic matter. The results showed that the added Fenton sludge acted as an extracellular electron acceptor to induce dissimilatory iron reduction, which increased chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and acidification efficiency by 16.1% and 19.8%, respectively, compared to the group without Fenton sludge. Along with the operation, more than 90% of the Fe(III) in Fenton sludge was reduced to Fe(II), and part of them was released to the effluent. Moreover, the Fe(II) in the effluent could be used as flocculants and Fenton reagents to further decrease the effluent COD by 29.8% and 44.5%, respectively. It provided a sustainable strategy to reuse Fenton sludge to enhance organic degradation based on the iron cycle.

Fenton sludge was converted into magnetic sludge-based biochar (SMBC) using a one-step pyrolysis process and employed as a novel heterogeneous catalyst to activate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) for the oxidative removal of methylene blue (MB). The crystal structure and catalytic activity of SMBC are strongly affected by the pyrolysis temperature. X-ray powder diffraction, Mössbauer, and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer analyses were conducted to determine the crystal phase transfer of iron (Fe) oxides at different pyrolytic temperatures and retention times. The results revealed that the catalytic efficiency of SMBC was strongly related to the crystal phase of Fe oxides. The catalyst obtained at 800 °C for 1 h exhibited superior catalytic properties and degraded 98.56% of the MB (100 mg·L −1 ) in 3 min via the synergistic effect of Fe 3 O 4 , Fe 0 , and biochar. Free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance studies demonstrated that ·OH, O 2 · − and 1 O 2 participated in the H 2 O 2 system, and·OH radicals were promptly generated owing to the catalysis of the SMBC. Aging tests were repeated for four cycles in three conditions to examine the stability of the material. The results showed that SMBC was relatively stable in non-aerated and aqueous conditions, but its activation performance was severely inhibited in an oxygen environment. Furthermore, the catalytic ability of SMBC was maintained at 88.13% after the 4th run. This study presents a cost-effective method of converting ferric sludge to an environmentally friendly catalyst that enables H 2 O 2 activation for degrading refractory organic contaminants .

Fluoride-containing wastewater posed significant environmental and health risks, and the high costs of current defluoridation adsorbents highlight the pressing need for cost-effective solutions. To achieve the advanced treatment of fluoride-containing wastewater and the resource utilization of solid waste, a pyrolytic-hydrothermal carbon adsorbent was developed from Fenton sludge (FS) and rice straw (RS). FS/RS-1:2BC, synthesized at 600 °C pyrolysis and 200 °C hydrothermal treatment with a 1:2 mass ratio, exhibited the highest fluoride ions (F − ) adsorption capacity of 10.57 mg g −1 . Physicochemical characterization revealed FS/RS-1:2BC consisted of porous graphitic carbon from RS and α-Fe₂O₃ from FS, with abundant oxygen-containing groups and a large surface area for F − adsorption. Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic fitting indicated the adsorption of F − was primarily relied on chemical interactions (chemical precipitation, ligand complexation, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction) between F − and the homogeneous monolayer surface, with physical adsorption and intraparticle diffusion as secondary mechanisms. FS/RS-1:2BC exhibited excellent stability and applicability, with a broad pH acceptance range (pH 3.5–8). It maintained 9.58 mg g −1 adsorption capacity under weakly alkaline and achieved around 90 % adsorption efficiency in coexisting anions. Regeneration experiments indicated that FS/RS-1:2BC retained 81.9 % adsorption capacity after five regeneration cycles. The development of FS/RS-1:2BC not only provided a cost-effective adsorbent for low-concentration fluoride removal from tailwater but also established a new approach for resource utilization of solid wastes.

A novel magnetic hydrochar synthesized from Fenton sludge (FS) and sewage sludge (SS) was employed in the anaerobic decolorization of acid orange 7 (AO7). The stable presence of Fe 3 O 4 in magnetic hydrochar was confirmed by physicochemical characterization. The degradation efficiency of AO7 in the anaerobic system with the addition of hydrochar prepared in an optimal proportion (SS:FS=1:3, named as HC-1:3) could reach 98.55%, which was 1.91 times higher than the control system. Particularly, superior electrical conductivity, electron transport system activity and azo reductase activity of the sludge in anaerobic system with HC-1:3 were achieved. The redox of Fe(Ⅲ)/Fe(Ⅱ) in anaerobic system was realized by dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria enriched with HC-1:3. According to the six-cycle batch experiments and 120-day continuous-flow UASB experiments, the addition of HC-1:3 into the anaerobic system facilitated the diversity of microbiological community and increased the ecological stability of anaerobic system. The possible electron transfer mechanism involving in the magnetic hydrochar-based anaerobic system for AO7 removal was speculated preliminarily. The as-prepared magnetic hydrochar not only showed a promising future in anaerobic system for recalcitrant contaminants degradation, but also provided a new approach for the resource utilization of FS and SS.
