Electro-Fenton and photoelectro-Fenton degradation of sulfamethazine using an active gas diffusion electrode without aeration

Wei Wang,Yanchun Li,Yawei Li,Minghua Zhou,Omotayo A. Arotiba

A novel superhydrophobic gas diffusion electrode based on carbon black (CB)- polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) modified graphite felt cathode was prepared to increase oxygen mass transfer efficiency and produce hydrogen peroxide at the gas-liquid-solid three-phase interface without aeration. The gas diffusion electrode system was further tested for the degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) by electro-Fenton (EF) and photoelectro-Fenton (PEF). In the EF process, SMT was removed effectively, but the mineralization degree was not high due to the generation of organic acids which were difficult to be further degraded. While in the PEF process, organic contaminant can be destroyed by the combined action of Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 , UV/H 2 O 2 and UV radiation, and more efficient mineralization (>83.5%) at low current (50 mA) was attained, which might be attributed to the high H 2 O 2 utilization (70–90%), rapid regeneration of Fe 2+ and photolysis of intermediates. In addition, it was verified that the PEF system had a good adaptability to pH and pollutant concentration . Compared with aeration system, the use of this active gas diffusion cathode in electrochemical advanced oxidation processes significantly reduced energy consumption.

Heterogeneous sono-Fenton catalytic degradation of bisphenol A by Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles under neutral condition

Ruixiong Huang,Zhanqiang Fang,Xiaomin Yan,Wen Cheng

In this study, the Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized as heterogeneous catalysts to effectively degrade bisphenol A (BPA). The properties of the synthesized catalysts were characterized by Brunnaer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The results indicated that the Fe 3 O 4 MNPs appeared to be roughly spherical shapes and their average size was 10–20   nm. The catalytic capacity of MNPs in US   +   Fe 3 O 4   +   H 2 O 2 system with different pH conditions, H 2 O 2 concentrations and MNPs doses was investigated. It was found that the OH radicals were promptly generated due to the catalysis of the Fe 3 O 4 MNPs. BPA could be degraded within a wide pH range from 3 to 9, and the degradation efficiencies were remarkably enhanced by ultrasound. The apparent rate constants were 8.31   ×   10 −3 , 7.96   ×   10 −3 and 5.64   ×   10 −3   min −1 , respectively, when the pH values were 3, 7 and 9, respectively. The removal efficiencies of BPA were all over 95%. About half total organic carbon (TOC) in solution was eliminated under neutral condition by sono-Fenton process. Furthermore, the results of stability and reusability demonstrated that the Fe 3 O 4 MNPS were promising in the treatment of wastewater with refractory organics.

Electro-Fenton degradation of ciprofloxacin with highly ordered mesoporous MnCo2O4-CF cathode: Enhanced redox capacity and accelerated electron transfer

Xueyue Mi,Yi Li,Xingming Ning,Jinhu Jia,Haitao Wang,Yuguo Xia,Yan Sun,Sihui Zhan

The emergence of antibiotics in the environment, especially in drinking water, poses potential harm to human health. It’s urgent to develop effective methods to remove antibiotics in drinking water. In this work, a series of mesoporous Mn x Co 3−x O 4 nanoparticles with high surface area were successfully synthesized and firstly used as effective stable electro-Fenton catalysts to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP). The removal of CIP achieved to 100% within 5 h. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies verified the existence of redox pairs of Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ and Co 2+ /Co 3+ . Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) results suggested that the redox reaction capacity of MnCo 2 O 4 was enhanced and the electron transfer rate on the surface of this bimetallic oxide was 2.67 and 1.6 times the number of MnO 2 and Co 3 O 4 , respectively. The effective degradation of CIP was mainly associated with the increased electron transfer rate and advanced redox reactivity owing to the synergistic effect of manganese and cobalt entrapped in the matrix of mesoporous structure which provided more accessible active sites. The degradation intermediates and possible process mechanism were investigated in detail. The reusability of MnCo 2 O 4 -CF cathode was evaluated five cycles with minimal ion leaching which the concentration of Mn and Co in the system was lower than 2.5 and 3.4 ppm, respectively. This work provides further understanding for removal process of organic pollutants by investigation of redox couple and electron transfer rate of the promising MnCo 2 O 4 -CF cathode.

Size-optimized Prussian blue and oxygen-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulation: A catalyst in electro-Fenton for antibiotic degradation

Jiayu Zhang,Shilin Yang,Minghui Liu,Baojian Jing,Jinghui Wang,Jie Qiu,Fengxia Deng,Shan Qiu

The Electro-Fenton (EF) process has been identified as a potentially effective solution for the treatment of antibiotic wastewater. However, challenges related to catalyst activity and stability persist as significant obstacles. In this study, we developed a bifunctional catalyst that has demonstrated stability in practical applications. A systematic investigation was conducted into the influence of Prussian Blue (PB) particle size (350–950 nm) on Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ conversion efficiency, and it was identified that 592 nm PB was optimal, achieving the highest conversion rate of 0.162 min −1 . To further enhance Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling, PB was encapsulated within oxidized carbon nanotubes (OCNT), forming an interconnected OCNT/PB catalyst that exhibited a remarkable 204.8 % synergistic enhancement. The superior performance of the catalyst can be attributed to three key factors: (i) The presence of dual active sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and Fenton reaction, separated by an atomic-scale distance of 2.352 Å, facilitating both hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) generation and its subsequent activation into reactive radicals. (ii) OCNT functioning as an electron-transfer bridge between the cathode and PB, effectively overcoming PB’s inherent low conductivity. (iii) Fe complexation on the PB surface with oxygen-containing functional groups, which significantly accelerates Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycling. Quantitatively, the coupling of ORR and Fenton sites accounts for 46.6 % of the catalytic activity, the electron-transfer bridge contributes 21.8 %, and Fe complexation enhances activity by 31.5 %. This study offers novel insights into the design of high-performance EF catalysts and presents an innovative strategy for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants in water.

In situ synthesis of FeOCl@MoS2 on graphite felt as novel electro-Fenton cathode for efficient degradation of antibiotic ciprofloxacin at mild pH

Zejun Liu,Jinquan Wan,Yongwen Ma,Yan Wang

The traditional Electro-Fenton (EF) is an efficient technology for wastewater treatment but suffers from the acidic condition requirement and external catalyst addition. To overcome these challenges, a GF@MoS 2 @FeOCl cathode was fabricated using a facile method. The as-prepared GF@MoS 2 @FeOCl cathode showed excellent performance for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation in EF process with RuO 2 /Ti electrode as the anode. H 2 O 2 was electro-generated and activated on-site at the cathode at mild pH without adding Fe 2+ . CIP was 100% removed with 74.4% of mineralization in 90 min at pH 6. The GF@MoS 2 @FeOCl cathode exhibited good reusability after consecutive runs of degradation. The degradation intermediates were investigated, and the possible mechanism was proposed. This work demonstrated that the prepared GF@MoS 2 @FeOCl cathode is a promising candidate for contaminants treatment in an EF system.

Heterogeneous electro-Fenton removal of polyacrylamide in aqueous solution over CoFe2O4 catalyst

Xu Shanshan,Yang Yi,Li Fanxiu

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal Polyacrylamide (PAM) in environmental water has become a major problem in water pollution management due to its high molecular mass, high viscosity and non-absorption by soil. CoFe 2 O 4 with strong magnetic properties was prepared by solvent-thermal synthesis method and used as the catalyst for the removal on PAM in heterogeneous Electro-Fenton (EF) system. It showed that the removal efficiency of PAM by the heterogeneous EF system using CoFe 2 O 4 catalyst was 92.01% at pH 3 after 120 min. Further studies indicated that ·OH was the most significant active species for the removal of PAM, and the contribution of ·O 2 − and SO 4 ·− for the removal of PAM was less than 15%. The reusability test and XRD, XPS, FTIR analyses proved that the catalyst had good stability. After a repeated use for five times, the catalyst still had a high PAM removal rate and stable structure. The valence distribution and functional groups of the phase components of the catalyst did not change significantly before and after the reaction. The possible mechanism of catalyst activation of H 2 O 2 was deduced by mechanism investigation. The CoFe 2 O 4 is an efficient and promising catalyst for the removal of PAM wastewater. A Co–Fe bimetallic oxide catalyst was prepared by hydrothermal method and used to treat polymer-containing wastewater. The prepared catalyst has strong magnetic properties, is easy to recover and can be reused (resource reuse). In the CoFe 2 O 4 heterogeneous system, the higher contaminant removal rate can be achieved with less catalyst dosage.

Dual-functional electrocatalyst of defective cobalt-nitrogen-doped porous carbon for enhanced in-situ hydrogen peroxide generation and electro-Fenton tetracycline degradation

Xuan Luo,Ruiying Zhu,Li Zhao,Xiaobo Gong

Tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) is one of the organic pollutants that can be consistently monitored in the aquatic environment and pose a great threat to the environment. The development of a bifunctional electro-Fenton (EF) catalyst capable of in situ H 2 O 2 production and decomposition to ·OH to degrade the pollutant is an efficient and green approach to deal with antibiotic pollution. The bifunctional catalysts Co, N double doped defective carbon materials were prepared by pyrolysis ball milling method using zeolite imidazolium ester skeleton structural materials (ZIFs) series materials as precursors, which showed more than 80% selectivity to H 2 O 2 and could basically remove TC within 120 min in EF system. Carbon defects and graphitic nitrogen can effectively improve the selectivity and yield of H 2 O 2 , while graphitization degree improves the charge transfer rate, the doping of Co and pyridinic-N contribute to the decomposition of H 2 O 2 into ·OH. The active species present in the Co 1 /Zn 1 -NPC/EF system is ·OH, and factors such as coexisting ions, humic acid and water quality have little effect on the efficiency of the degradation of TC in the Co 1 /Zn 1 -NPC/EF system, whereas Co 1 /Zn 1 -NPC electrocatalytic catalyst has excellent stability and stable treatment performance for a wide range of pollutants, as well as being an environmentally friendly green catalyst without metal leaching. Furthermore, the possible pathways and the toxicity hazard of TC degradation were proposed. The bifunctional electrocatalyst prepared in this research provides a novel strategy for the green and efficient treatment of pollutants in wastewater.

Cobalt based bimetallic catalysts for heterogeneous electro-Fenton adapting to vary pH for HEDP and MIT degradation

Liping Wei,Kexin Zhou,Hui-qiang Li,Ping Yang,Baicang Liu

Most of the materials studied as catalysts in the electro-Fenton system are variants of iron oxide or iron hydroxide. However, iron-based catalysts often exhibit weak catalytic capabilities under neutral and alkaline conditions. In this work, we synthesized three cobalt based bimetallic oxides, Co2CuOx, Co2AlOx, and Co2NiOx, using hydrothermal method and evaluated them as catalysts for the heterogeneous electro-Fenton system to remove 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and Methylisothiazolinone [2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one] (MIT). Co2NiOx has the highest catalytic degradation activity for HEDP, and Co2CuOx has the best catalytic degradation effect for MIT. Based on characterization results of the catalysts, the reasons for the differences in the pollutant removal efficiency were analysed, and the optimal pH for the three cobalt based oxides to remove HEDP and MIT was investigated. The results showed that the optimal pH values of the three cobalt based bimetallic oxides are not only influenced by the second metal type, but also by the properties of pollutants. Therefore, suitable cobalt based catalysts can be selected based on the different properties of pollutants, or the composition of cobalt based catalysts can be adjusted to meet the different pH requirements of target wastewater. The three cobalt based bimetallic oxides exhibited good degradation of HEDP and MIT under neutral conditions, which to some extent solved the problem of narrow pH range in the practical application of the electro-Fenton process.

A novel Cu/Fe cathode prepared by a facile redox pathway for phenol degradation electrocatalytically via the electro-fenton assisted electro-chlorination process

YeXin Liang,Mingzhe Yuan,Haimei Cheng,Haiqin Lv,Lei Zhao,JiaLi Tang,Yong Feng,Ying Huang,Qingguo Meng

Electrochemical methods for treating phenolic wastewater have been widely studied, with most research focusing primarily on the anode, while the cathode has generally served as a counter electrode. This study aims to enhance the electrocatalytic process by developing a new Fe/Cu-based cathode using a simple redox method. We created a CuO Cu@Fe-Fe 2 O 3-x (0 < x < 1, combining Fe 2 O 3 and FeO) electrode, referred to as CCFFO, to facilitate the electro-Fenton process without requiring additional H 2 O 2 or Fe 2+ . In our electrolysis system with NaCl as the electrolyte for electro-chlorination process, phenol concentration was reduced from 100 mg/L to below 0.5 mg/L within 10 min. Optimal experimental conditions were determined by evaluating various parameters such as chloride electrolyte concentration, current density, electrode plate spacing, aeration, pH, and cathode types. Additionally, the role of chloride ions in phenol degradation was investigated through free radical quenching experiments. A 500-hour continuous flow experiment demonstrated the durability of the CCFFO cathode. GC/MS analysis identified intermediates formed during phenol degradation and the underlying catalytic mechanism was explored. The results indicate that the electro-chlorination process at the anode is the primary driver of phenol degradation, assisted by the electro-Fenton process on the CCFFO cathode. The CCFFO cathode effectively prevents the production of harmful by-products like perchlorate. The degradation efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) were 63.5 % and 80.25 %, respectively. Achieving a phenol degradation efficiency of 99.5 % within 10 min, the CCFFO cathode and electrolytic system show significant potential for wastewater treatment applications.

In-situ synthesis of 3D GA on titanium wire as a binder- free electrode for electro-Fenton removing of EDTA-Ni

Shulong Wen,Zhuyu Niu,Zhen Zhang,Lianghao Li,Yuancai Chen

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) could form stable complexes with toxic metals such as nickel due to its strong chelation. The three-dimensional (3D) macroporous graphene aerogels (GA), which was in-situ assembled by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets on titanium wire as binder-free electrode, was presented as cathode for the degradation of EDTA-Ni in Electro-Fenton process. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) results indicated 3D GA formed three dimensional architecture with large and homogenous macropore structure and surface area. Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) and Rotating Ring-disk Electrode (RRDE) results showed that the 3D GA cathode at pH 3 displayed the highest current density and electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), and better two-electron selectivity for ORR than other pH value, confirming the 3D-GA cathode at pH 3 has the highest electrocatalytic activity and generates more H 2 O 2 . The factors such as pH, applied current density, concentration of Fe 2+ , Na 2 SO 4, and aeration rates of air were also investigated. Under the optimum conditions, 73.5% of EDTA-Ni was degraded after reaction for 2   h. Mechanism analysis indicated that the production of OH on the 3D GA cathode played an important role in the removal of EDTA-Ni in the 3D GA-EF process, where the direct regeneration of Fe 2+ on the cathode would greatly reduce the consumption of H 2 O 2 . Therefore, it is of great promise for 3D-GA catalyst to be developed as highly efficient, cost-effective and durable cathode for the removal of EDTA-Ni.

Degradation kinetics of sodium alginate via sono-Fenton, photo-Fenton and sono-photo-Fenton methods in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles

Qingfeng Zhou,Yanfeng Liu,Gaobo Yu,Furui He,Kai Chen,Dunchao Xiao,Xinyu Zhao,Yuhong Feng,Jiacheng Li

Sono-photo-Fenton, sono-Fenton and photo-Fenton methods combined with heterogeneous TiO 2 nanoparticles are adopted to investigate the degradation of sodium alginate (NaAlg), and the kinetics mechanism is also explored. Experimental results suggest that the reaction order of NaAlg degradation ( n ) is 0.51 and the extent of photocatalytic degradation can increase with the loading of TiO 2 nanoparticles. Meanwhile, as the catalyst concentration increases from 0.05 to 0.5 gL −1 , the degradation rate constant ( k ) is decreased. In addition, the structure of degraded NaAlg is characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), 1 H NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses. The FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectra results indicate that the C2-C3 bond in the structure of NaAlg is broken and intra-molecular esters are formed during the degradation process due to the strong oxidization of the Fenton system. In general, the sono-photo-Fenton process with TiO 2 nanoparticles could provide an efficient way to degrade the NaAlg to low-molecular-weight.

Kinetic study of the degradation of rhodamine B using a flow-through UV/electro-Fenton process with the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid

Ying Zhang,Guanting Luo,Qi Wang,Yinqiao Zhang,Minghua Zhou

An UV enhanced electro-Fenton (EF) process was conducted in a flow-through system to remove rhodamine B (RhB) in the presence of ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA). The process was denoted as UV/EDTA/EF where EDTA formed complexes with iron ions, thus keeping them soluble at high pH values. The process was very efficient as it could initiate the fast reduction of Fe III to Fe II and thus the decomposition of H 2 O 2 . The influence of Fe dose, the ratio of EDTA:Fe, aeration rate, flow rate, current, initial RhB concentration and pH on the RhB removal in the UV/EDTA/EF process was investigated. The best RhB removal was obtained as 89.9% at [Fe] 0  = [EDTA] 0  = 0.2 mM, current = 50 mA, aeration rate = 20 mL min −1 , flow rate = 7 mL min −1 , pH = 7 and [Na 2 SO 4 ] 0  = 0.05 M. The degradation of EDTA during the process was also studied. Radical scavenging experiments indicated that OH was the dominant radical for RhB removal. While, the photolysis of Fe III EDTA was mainly responsible for EDTA degradation. RhB and EDTA removal in different systems was compared. The stability test proved that in the presence of EDTA, the UV/EF process could remove RhB with high efficiency in the first two runs. While, the efficiency dropped remarkably after EDTA’s complete depletion. The mechanisms of the UV/EDTA/EF process were proposed. UV/EDTA/EF conducted in the flow-through system was able to efficiently remove RhB as well as EDTA in a wide pH range and proposed as a promising approach for wastewater treatment .
