Application of Fenton’s reagent degrades dissolved and colloidal substances in old corrugated container white water

Mingfu Li,Guangxing Li,Yi Liu,Ye Jin,Kelei Zhang,Lianxin Luo

Fenton’s reagent has strong oxidizing properties and can effectively remove refractory organic pollutants. Fenton’s reagent was applied to deal with the dissolved colloidal substance (DCS) in the white water of old corrugated container (OCC). The optimum reaction condition on Fenton treatment was analyzed by response surface methodology (RSM) based on response values of DCS and COD Cr . The result indicated that the optimized condition is as following, pH is 2.45, a mass ratio of H 2 O 2 and COD Cr is 1.1 and a mole ratio of FeSO 4 and H 2 O 2 is 0.35. Under the optimum condition of a single factor experiment, the experimental results showed that the removal rate of CODcr and DCS was 90.68 % and 1.61 g/L respectively, which was consistent with the response surface analysis prediction values. During the Fenton oxidation, the particle sizes of DCS decreased, the ions content and turbidity of the white water decreased, however the electrical conductivity and zeta potential of the white water raised slightly. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis proved that benzoic acid and nonandioic acid can be effectively removed by Fenton’s reagent, however the content of dehydroabietic acid decreased by 24.07 %.

Loofah-Derived Adsorbent Column for Sustainable Purification of Oily Fumes: Synergistic Effect of Filtration and Adsorption

Jiayi Zhong,Bonian Zhou,Lei Liao,Aimiao Qin,Shengpeng Mo,Xiaobin Zhou,Jianwen Wei,Hongqiang Wang,Yinming Fan,Huan Zhang

Loofah is deemed a promising candidate for the purification of oily fumes. Our research utilized H3PO4for initial activation of loofah (TCS), producing loofahderived carbon (TGSC-0). Subsequently, Fenton’s reagent was utilized for further modification to yield loofah-derived carbon (TGSC-1). TGSC-1 was used in the form of an adsorption column to simultaneously treat multiple pollutants from oily fumes, with surface Fe3+, Fe2+, and H2O2catalyzing ·OH and ·OOH generation to enhance adsorption of the oils and non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC). Characterization showed that the specific surface area of TGSC-1 was 427.97 m2/g and pore sizes ranged from 0.50 to 3.50 nm. The rich mesoporous and macroporous structures of TGSC-1 enhanced the capability of carbon layer adsorption. Langmuir adsorption kinetics suggested that adsorption proceeded via monolayer adsorption pathways, while L-τ lines revealed shorter protective effect times for adsorbing PM10and PM2.5than for oils and NMHC. The results indicated that TGSC-1 exhibited maximum saturated adsorption capacities of 25.79, 13.02, 9.82, and 15.99 mg/g for oils, NMHC, PM2.5, and PM10, respectively. Increasing resistance of the adsorption column exhibited a notable synergistic effect of filtration and adsorption in treating oily fumes. It combines renewable materials with low-energy processing, delivering eco-economic benefits for sustainable development and application.

Characteristics and inhibition of mercury re-emission from desulfurization slurry by Fenton reagent

Hao Wu,Hen Chen,Qianwen Wang,Hongmin Yang

In this paper, the mercury re-emission from desulfurization slurry and mercury distribution in gas-liquid-solid three-phase at different desulfurization slurry parameters were studied. Besides, the inhibition performance of Fenton reagent for mercury re-emission and distribution was also investigated. The results show that the Hg 0 would re-emit from desulfurization slurry, and the proportions of mercury in gas-liquid-solid three-phase were about 12.17%, 77.72% and 12.08% at typical desulfurization slurry parameter. The S(IV) concentration (sulfite and/or bisulfite concentration), temperature and pH value of desulfurization slurry had great impacts on mercury re-emission and distribution. The increase of S(IV) concentration weakened the mercury re-emission, increased the proportions of mercury in solid phase and liquid phase. The increase of slurry temperature could intensify the mercury re-emission, increase the proportion of mercury in solid phase, but decrease the proportion of mercury in liquid phase. Higher pH value was favorable for the weakening of mercury re-emission, but would increase the proportion of mercury in solid phase and liquid phase. Moreover, the introduction of Fenton reagent into desulfurization slurry could inhibit the mercury re-emission and some mercury that should be re-emitted before would be restrained in solid phase, leading a slight increase of proportion of mercury in solid phase. The existing of oxygenated free radicals , which were generated from Fenton reagent, was the main reason for the inhibition of mercury re-emission. The increase of Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 concentration was conducive to the promotion of inhibition performance, but the effect gradually to weaken. The appropriate value of Fe 2+ concentration was 0.04 mM with the H 2 O 2 concentration of 0.30 mM in experiments. In addition, the better inhibition performance (about 80%) of Fenton reagent for mercury re-emission would be realized at lower S(IV) concentration (1–5 mM), lower temperature (30–40 °C) and lower pH value (4.0–5.0) of slurry.

Trimethoprim degradation by Fenton and Fe(II)-activated persulfate processes

Shizong Wang,Jianlong Wang

Trimethoprim is a pollutant ubiquitous in the environment due to its extensive application, and it cannot be effectively removed by conventional wastewater treatment processes . In this study, the Fenton and the Fe(II)-activated persulfate processes were employed to degrade trimethoprim in an aqueous solution. The results showed that the concentration of persulfate, H 2 O 2 and Fe(II) a had significant influence on the degradation of trimethoprim in both processes. De-ionized water spiked with trimethoprim resulted in the complete degradation of trimethoprim (0.05 mM) by the mineralization of 54.9% of Fenton's reagent when the concentrations of H 2 O 2 and Fe(II) were 1 mM and 0.05 mM, respectively. In contrast, 73.4% of trimethoprim was degraded by the mineralization of 40.5% of the Fe(II)-activated persulfate process when the concentration of persulfate and Fe(II) were each 4 mM. Intermediate compounds with different m / z were detected for the Fenton and the Fe(II)-activated persulfate processes, indicating alternative degradation pathways. In the actual wastewater spiked with trimethoprim, the removal efficiency of trimethoprim decreased to 35.8% and 43.6%, respectively, for the Fenton and the Fe(II)-activated persulfate processes. In addition, the decomposition efficiencies for hydrogen peroxide and persulfate were 43.8% and 92.5%, respectively, which was lower than those in the de-ionized water system. These results demonstrated that wastewater components had a negative influence on trimethoprim degradation and the decomposition of the oxidants (persulfate and H 2 O 2 ). In summary, the Fe(II)-activated persulfate process could be used as an alternative technology for treating trimethoprim-containing wastewater.

Green synthesis of polypyrrole for CO2 capture from humid flue gases

Zhe Wang,Zhuo Li,Liying Liu,Peizhi Cao,Shupeng Li,Gang Kevin Li

Post-combustion carbon capture from fossil fuels for concentrated sources such as power plants is considered as one of the efficient ways to mitigate CO2 emissions. However, conventional adsorbents in physical adsorption processes have faced challenges in the presence of moisture in flue gases. Here, we successfully synthesized polypyrrole (PPy) adsorbent using Fenton's reagent and demonstrated that the filtrate could be recycled for the synthesis of PPy. The single-component gas-adsorption capacities of PPy were measured to obtain CO2, CH4, and N2 adsorption amounts of 16.73, 5.19, and 1.06 cm3 g−1 at 303 K and 101 kPa, respectively. Calculations by the IAST method demonstrated that PPy had excellent gas selectivities for CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 of 46 and 4.0, which could be utilized for CO2 separation in flue gases and biogas. To simulate flue gas carbon capture, we investigated the dynamic adsorption capacity of PPy on CO2 in the presence of water vapor using a breakthrough device in the laboratory. The CO2 adsorption capacity was twice higher in moisture than in dry conditions, which was attributed to the presence of water vapor-formed hydrogen bonds that enhance its adsorption capacity through electrostatic and acid–base interactions of CO2 with PPy. This green and facilely synthesized polypyrrole adsorbent has great potential for carbon capture in high humidity flue gases.

Synergistic effect of combined hydrothermal carbonization of Fenton's reagent and biomass enhances the adsorption and combustion characteristics of sludge towards eco-friendly and efficient sludge treatment

Yeqing Li,Xingru Yang,Mingyu Zhu,Liming Dong,Hao Jiang,Quan Xu,Hongjun Zhou,Yongming Han,Lu Feng,Chengfei Li

The amount of lignocellulose biomass and sludge is enormous, so it is of great significance to find a treatment combining the two substances. Co-hydrothermal carbonization (Co-HTC) has emerged as an efficient approach to dispose sludge. However, the improvement of sludge upgrading and combustion performance remains an important challenge during the Co-HTC of sludge. In this work, the Co-HTC of sludge and Fenton's reagent at different mixing ratios was proposed to achieve sludge reduction. Moreover, the addition of two kinds of biomass improved the adsorption capacity and combustion performance of hydrochars . When sludge and sawdust were the Co-HTC at the mass ratio of 1:3, the liquid phase Pb concentration decreased notably to 18.06%. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of hydrochars was further improved by modification, which was in accordance with pseudo-second-order kinetics. Particularly, the hydrochars derived from the Co-HTC had higher heating value (HHV) and could be used as a clean fuel. This study proposed a new technical route of combining the HTC with Fenton's reagent and lignocellulose biomass, which could be served as a cleaner and eco-friendly treatment of sludge.

Green energy-efficient synthesis of Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite and its application for hydroxylation of phenol

Zeyu Han,Feng Zhang,Xinhong Zhao

Currently, there remains a great challenge to synthesize zeolites in an energy-saving and environmentally friendly manner. Herein we report a novel solvent-free route of synthesizing Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite, which is featured by using Fenton's reagent as a promoter. The influences of crystallization time, amount of hydrogen peroxide and low-temperature pretreatment on the synthesis of Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite were investigated in detail. The results indicate that the combination of solvent-free synthesis with Fenton's reagent can facilitate the rapid crystallization of Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite. The resultant Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite was used as a catalyst for phenol hydroxylation, and characterized by XRD , SEM, ICP-AES, N 2 physisorption and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Notably, it exhibits a much better catalytic performance as compared with the reference catalyst by conventional solvent-free method. The observed enhanced catalytic performance for this Fe-ZSM-5 catalyst is attributed to its larger BET surface area and mesoporous volume as well as enrichment towards phenol.

Fenton-like reagent pretreatment for enhanced activation of corn straw: A green approach to sustainable activated carbon with improved electrochemical performance

Weijuan Lan,Xinxin Zhao,Yanqing Yang,Hua Huang,Dongxue Yin,Jiawei Wang,Hanli Wan,Hui Li

Corn straw is the second most produced agricultural residue globally, and the efficient utilization of this resource is of great environmental and economic importance. The study utilized Fenton-like reagents for the pretreatment of corn straw, followed by carbonization and activation. It was found that the activated carbon samples pretreated with Fenton-like reagents exhibited remarkable microporous structures with good electrochemical properties. Specifically, activated carbon samples treated with a 0.1 M concentration of FeCl 3 solution and 3 wt% H 2 O 2 reached a specific surface area of 1842 m 2 /g, with a capacitance of up to 342 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 . The findings of the life cycle assessment demonstrate that the utilization of Fenton-like reagent pretreatment resulted in a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and ecotoxicity in comparison with conventional methodologies. The study observed a near 30 % decrease in CO 2 emissions and a 59 % reduction in terrestrial ecotoxicity. This pretreatment method has been demonstrated to enhance activation efficiency while concomitantly reducing the amount of activator required. This study demonstrates the potential of Fenton-like reagent pretreatment technology in improving the electrochemical performance of activated carbon and reducing environmental impact, providing a green and efficient process path.

Mechanistic Chemistry of Extraordinary Capacity of Salvianolic Acid B on Oxidatively-damaged Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Tingting Wang,Xican Li,Yunrong Li,Jianrun Wu,Yuyin Huang,Gang Wei,Dongfeng Chen

As the main bioactive component of Chinese herbal medicine Danshen, salvianolic acid B (Sal B, or lithospermic acid B) was observed to maintain the viability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) treated by Fenton's reagent in the study. Interestingly, at a higher concentration, Sal B could even increase the viability rate to 175.1%. In mechanistic analysis experiments, Sal B was found to resist DNA destruction by •OH radical, scavenge various radicals in vitro , reduce Cu 2+ → Cu + , chelate Fe 2+ to yield an absorption maximum at 710 nm. Based on these results, we concluded that, (1) Sal B can not only protect MSCs against •OH-induced damages, but also promote their proliferation. This extraordinary capacity makes Sal B an ideal candidate in MSCs transplantation especially when MSCs are polluted by iron-overload or other oxidative stress factors and, can partly be responsible for the versatile properties of Sal B in pharmacology. The possible mechanisms of its protective effect are hypothesized to include Fe 2+ chelating, and direct radical scavenging which is involved in electron transfer (ET) or hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the catechol moieties. Its proliferation-promoting effect is presumed to be from its ester group, carboxylic group, or benzofuran ring.

Sustainable disposal of Fenton sludge and enhanced organics degradation based on dissimilatory iron reduction in the hydrolytic acidification process

Mingwei Wang,Ye Sun,Qilin Yu,Zhiqiang Zhao,Yang Li,Yaobin Zhang

Fenton sludge generated in the flocculation stage of the Fenton oxidation process contains significant amounts of ferric iron and organic pollutants , which require proper treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated that adding Fenton sludge to an anaerobic digester can decompose some of the organic pollutants in the Fenton sludge to lower its environmental risk, but iron gradually accumulates in the reactor, which weakens the sustainability of the method. In this study, Fenton sludge was introduced into a hydrolytic acidification reactor with a weak acid environment to relieve the iron accumulation as well as improve the degradation of organic matter. The results showed that the added Fenton sludge acted as an extracellular electron acceptor to induce dissimilatory iron reduction, which increased chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and acidification efficiency by 16.1% and 19.8%, respectively, compared to the group without Fenton sludge. Along with the operation, more than 90% of the Fe(III) in Fenton sludge was reduced to Fe(II), and part of them was released to the effluent. Moreover, the Fe(II) in the effluent could be used as flocculants and Fenton reagents to further decrease the effluent COD by 29.8% and 44.5%, respectively. It provided a sustainable strategy to reuse Fenton sludge to enhance organic degradation based on the iron cycle.

Boron-enriched rice-like homologous carbon nanoclusters with a 51.5% photoluminescent quantum yield for highly sensitive determination of endogenous hydroxyl radicals in living cells

Zhong-Xia Wang,Lei Hu,Xiao-Qiong Li,Yi-Lei Jia,Ting Wang,Wei Wang

Exploring the ultrahigh quantum efficiency of a carbon-based probe via a green and simple technique, and utilisation of its sensing ability for highly bioactive molecule detection is still highly challenging. Herein, we prepared a novel boron-enriched rice-like homologous carbon nanoclusters (BRCNs) with an ultrahigh quantum efficiency of ∼51.5% by introduction of a conjugated structure attached to the CN bond and an electron-withdrawing boron active centre. Unexpectedly, the BRCNs obtained showed a stable dispersion of rice-like carbon nanograins, composed of small carbon dot assembled nanoclusters with an average diameter size of ∼30 nm, and containing boron units of ∼24.68 at%. What's exciting is that the BRCNs obtained exhibited an “on–off–on” three-state emission with the addition of an hydroxyl radical (OH˙) and its antioxidants. Thus, two distinctive fluorescent responses for OH˙ and antioxidants based on the BRCN probe had been developed, and the mechanism has been determined using TEM, XPS, FT-IR, FL, UV-vis spectrophotometry, UPS and fluorescent lifetimes. The OH˙, generated from the Fenton's reagent, preferentially attack the electron-deficient vacancy p orbit of the boron atom in the surface of the BRCNs, which results in the boron atom being easily substituted/attacked by OH˙, and leading to spontaneous aggregation induced quenching (AIQ) due to the existence of a strong intermolecular hydrogen bond between denatured BRCNs. Furthermore, the proposed method was also successfully applied to monitor endogenous OH˙ generation in HeLa cells by confocal imaging, which could be used for elucidating OH˙-induced oxidative damage to biological tissues and proteins.

3D-Printed Fe-Ni Porous Framework Structures for Efficient and Recyclable Degradation of Azo Dyes in Wastewater

Li Ma,Wei-Ming Yang,Lin Xue,Jie Zhang,Ke-Xin Lin,Pei-Jian Chen,Xiang Zhang,Hai-Shun Liu

Graphical The co-catalysis of iron-nickel bimetals can not only achieve the complete degradation of organic pollutants but also continue to be recycled. The introduction of Ni enhances the reducibility of the 3D Fe 50 Ni 50 catalyst surface, promotes electron transfer, enriches the surface with Fe (II) during degradation, maintains activity, and provides a self-healing effect. Advanced oxidation processes offer a potent, eco-friendly solution for degrading organic wastewater. Creating high-activity and stability catalysts is crucial to addressing water pollution concerns. Nevertheless, due to constraints in their preparation, prevalent catalysts often lack satisfactory cyclic stability and pose challenges in recovery. This research introduces an innovative catalyst, the 3D printed Fe-Ni porous framework (3D Fe 50 Ni 50 ), characterized by its high activity, robust stability, and straightforward recovery process. The catalytic performance of 3D Fe 50 Ni 50 is attributed to the synergistic effects of its bimetallic constituents and its distinct porous architecture. Under optimal conditions, the kinetic reaction constant reaches 1.56 min −1 . It represents a 26-fold increase over commercially available Fenton's reagent ZVI powder. And the Fe 50 Ni 50 catalyst can be employed cyclically up to 132 times, maintaining a degradation efficiency of over 90% relative to its initial performance. The findings of this article suggest that incorporating Ni augments the catalyst surface's reducibility, facilitating electron transfer. This bestows the catalyst with a nice self-healing ability, ensuring sustained degradation. This investigation paves the way for the design of catalysts with heightened activity and stability and presents promising applications in wastewater treatment.
