Icing behavior of supercooled droplets on superhydrophobic polymercoatings between lotus effect and petal effect

Xiaoru Hao,Jun Xie,Yu Zhang,Wei Sheng,Haikun Zheng

This paper investigated anti-icing behavior and wettability of droplets on superhydrophobic polymercoatings between lotus effect and petal effect, which were prepared on surfaces of 2021 aluminum alloy with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-heptafluorodecyl (FAS-17). The prepared surfaces displayed excellent hydrophobicity with contact angles of 154.9° ± 1.5°and 139.8° ± 1.3°, while rolling angles are 4° ± 1.0° (lotus effect) and 30° ± 1.5° (petal effect). Thus, the present study focused on the different characterizations and the anti-icing potential of the superhydrophobic polymersurfaces were analyzed based on three parameters including the icing delay time, the crystallization temperature of water droplets, and contact time of impinging droplets on the cold superhydrophobic polymer coatings (−15 °C). Furthermore, the anti-icing of superhydrophobic coatings between lotus effect and petal effect with freezing time and crystallization temperature experimental phenomena were consistent with the thermodynamic analysis. It is also proved that the droplets have different bounce behavior on different polymercoating surfaces by droplet impact experiment. The study offers a comprehensive perspective on polymercoatings of different wetttablility for anti-icing behavior applications.

Defect by design: Harnessing the “petal effect” for advanced hydrophobic surface applications

Min Mo,Xingjia Bai,Zhonglin Liu,Zhimin Huang,Mengxue Xu,Lanyu Ma,Wenqin Lai,Qiufeng Mo,Songbo Xie,Yanming Li,Yifeng Huang,Ning Xiao,Yihua Zheng

Hypothesis: In the interfacial wetting boundary, the superhydrophobic surface is often damaged, and the anisotropic wettability of its surface has attracted many researchers’ attention. The “petal effect” surface has typical anisotropic wettability . We predict that under the dual conditions of structural defects and high impact velocity , the “petal effect” becomes more adhesive on the surface. Experiments: This study refers to the droplet state on rose petals, structural defects were constructed on the superhydrophobic surface. This paper studies the influence of macro-structural defects on the wettability change from natural to bionic “lotus effect” to “petal effect” in both static and dynamic angles. Findings: Macro defects significantly change the static contact angle of the superhydrophobic surface. The higher the impact velocity of the droplet, the higher the energy dissipation of the “petal effect” surface (DSHS), which improves the adhesion of the surface to the droplet and prolongs the contact time. It is found that the defect structure and high impact velocity will directly affect the deposition and desorption of droplets on the superhydrophobic surface, and they are both essential. This wetting dynamic law is very likely to be helpful in the quantitative design of defect structure scale for dynamic desorption of droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces.

Template-Free Self-Assembly of Fluorine-Free Hydrophobic Polyimide Aerogels with Lotus or Petal Effect

Xin Li,Jin Wang,Yibo Zhao,Xuetong Zhang

Aerogels have been widely used in the fields like thermal insulation, energy storage, environmental remediation, catalysis, drug release, sensor, and cosmic dust collection, etc. Hydrophobic functionalization not only determines the surface energy and basic physical properties of the target aerogels but also be critical for their long-term stability due to their highly open-porous structures. However, there is still lack of facial and versatile methodologies for the hydrophobic functionalization of aerogels, especially for the nonsilica ones. Herein, two efficient fluorine-free strategies were developed to synthesize various hydrophobic and even superhydrophobic polyimide (PI) aerogels. First, superhydrophobic PI aerogels with contact angle higher than 150° were fabricated by the segregation self-assembly process between poly[4,4′-(4,4′-isopropylidenediphenoxy)bis(phthalic anhydride)-co-p-phenylene diamine] and poly[biphenyl-3,3′,3,4′-tetracarboxylic dianhydride-co-2,2′-dimethylbenzidine] (poly(BPDA-DMBZ)). These PI aerogels exhibited a lotus effect that water droplets could not wet the surface but could easily roll off. Second, various hydrophobic PI aerogels, including the well-documented superhydrophilic PI aerogels derived from DMBZ–BPDA and 4,4′-oxydianiline–BPDA, were synthesized by the density-induced hydrophilicity–hydrophobicity transition approach. These PI aerogels exhibited a petal effect that water droplets on the aerogel surface appeared spherical in shape, which could not roll off even when the aerogel was turned upside down. These two reported strategies might open new and straightforward ways to hydrophobic functionalization of other polymeric aerogel systems.

Robust adhesion of droplets via heterogeneous dynamic petal effects

Yihua Zheng,Chengchun Zhang,Jing Wang,Yan Liu,Chun Shen,Junfeng Yang

Hypothesis Bionics and dynamic interface wetting intensely appeal to many research communities due to their unique practical implications. The rose petals had a highly robust dynamic water-retaining capacity under heavy precipitation. We predicted that the roses became more “hydrophilic” at higher Weber numbers . Experiments Fresh rose petals were directly impacted by droplets, and facile artificial petal-like substrates and superhydrophobic substrates were used in the comparative analysis. The wetting dynamics of the droplet (e.g., topography, bounce dynamics, contact time, three-phase contact lines, and oscillations) were investigated when interacting with four selected target substrates. Findings The present work first time investigated the dynamic wetting rule of the sticky superhydrophobic substrates (SSHS). Simulated and experimental investigations confirmed that the unique coupling synergy between the pinning effect and the inhomogeneous micropapillaes resulted in lopsided contact line velocities, which remarkably suppressed the lateral oscillation and rebounding. This may be a new strategy when designing dynamic water-repellent surfaces and open a promising avenue for emerging areas such as super-efficiency energy conversion and harvesting.

Ampere-level membrane-less water electrolysis enabled by rose-petal-effect-mimetic interface

Kai Deng,Hao Feng,Ying Zhang,Dong Liu,Qiang Li

Summary To maximize product purity, current density and efficiency has never been demonstrated simultaneously for the membrane-less water electrolyzers that eliminate the use of a membrane or a diaphragm, as well as their unfavorable issues. Here, we successfully addressed the trade-offs by leveraging the rose-petal-effect-mimetic (RPEM) design strategy. We mimicked nature by alternating water-repellent and water-adhesive building blocks; the resultant RPEM electrode is in the Cassie-impregnating wetting state, which is ideal for efficient bubble-less gas evolution reactions. A bubble-less HER at a current density of 4.2 A cm −2 , one order of magnitude larger than that of any known bubble-less electrodes, was demonstrated by the RPEM electrode. Based on this, we further constructed the RPEM electrolyzer and demonstrated membrane-less water electrolysis at 1 A cm −2 current density, simultaneously with 61.5% electrolysis efficiency and 0.003% hydrogen crossover, remarkably outperforming the state-of-the-art membrane-less water electrolyzer.

Shape memory superhydrophobic surface with switchable transition between “Lotus Effect” to “Rose Petal Effect”

Yanlong Shao,Jie Zhao,Yong Fan,Zhenping Wan,Longsheng Lu,Zhihui Zhang,Weihua Ming,Luquan Ren

Superhydrophobic surface with tunable water adhesion has attracted great interests due to its unique performances in manipulating the status of water stay and roll-off. Herein, inspired by two typical superhydrophobic models of rose petal and lotus leaves, a superhydrophobic surface that can reversibly transform between the Cassie-Baxter state and the Cassie impregnating state has been developed by regulating the shape memory polymer SMP micro/nanostructures. The superhydrophobic surface with intact micro/nanostructure arrays exhibits excellent self-cleaning properties with extraordinary low water adhesive force, whereas the superhydrophobic surface with compressed microstructure arrays demonstrates high water adhesion. In response to the heating triggered deforming-restoring action, the switchable superwetting transition between those two models can be easily realized by their transformed morphologies. Due to the good shape memory effect of the polymer, the structured SMP assay surfaces can display a multiply switchable transition between the “lotus-effect” and the “rose-petal effect”, revealing a great potential for rewritable liquid patterns, controlled droplet transportation.

Superefficient and robust polymer coating for bionic manufacturing of superwetting surfaces with “rose petal effect” and “lotus leaf effect”

Shuangjie Sun,Heng Li,Yahao Guo,Hao-Yang Mi,Ping He,Guoqiang Zheng,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Mimicking the superwetting behaviors of nature creatures is advantageous for the development of multifunctional surfaces. Superhydrophobic surfaces are desired for applications such as self-cleaning, drag reduction, anti-staining, anti-corrosion, oil-water separation, etc. Herein, a superefficient approach is proposed to produce a robust ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) coating on various substrates by dripping and drying UHMWPE solutions. The superhydrophobic surfaces can be tuned between Cassie impregnating state and Cassie state, which resembles the “rose petal effect” and “lotus leaf effect”, respectively, by simply adjusting the quenching temperature and the solvent system. UHMWPE/ortho-xylene biphasic solution resulted in a wrinkled morphology with a high-adhesion superhydrophobic surface, while the UHMWPE/ortho-xylene/cyclohexanone triple-phase solution led to a highly porous morphology with a low-adhesion superhydrophobic surface. The micro-nano structured surfaces displayed promising applicability in droplet transportation, selective oil absorption, anti-staining, and self-cleaning. They also possess superior stability and durability against various liquids and mechanical impact. This work provides a highly efficient approach to produce versatile bionic superhydrophobic coatings with tunable superwetting states.
