Removal of sudan dyes from aqueous solution by magnetic carbon nanotubes: Equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Xiaoshan Sun,Haijian Ou,Changfeng Miao,Ligang Chen

In this study, magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) have been synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles onto carbon nanotubes, and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope and physical property measurement system. They were used as adsorbents for the removal of sudan I, sudan II, sudan III, and sudan IV from aqueous solution. The effects of experimental parameters on adsorption were fully studied. The results showed that 5   mg MCNTs can remove sudan dyes sufficiently from 20   mL aqueous solution within 60   min at pH in the range of 4–7. Moreover, the existence of NaCl favored the adsorption. The sorbents can be reused more than ten times with 2% acetic acid ethanol as desorption solution. The equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies were investigated. The resultant kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order model. The Freundlich model fitted sudan dyes sorption isotherms better than the Langmuir model. The thermodynamic data calculated from the temperature dependent sorption isotherms demonstrated that sudan dyes sorption on the MCNTs was a spontaneous process.

Influence of host–guest interactions on analytical performance of direct analysis in real-time mass spectrometry

Liu Min,Wang Simin,Ge Wuxia,Bi Wentao,Chen David Da Yong

To systematically study the influence of host–guest interactions on the analytical performance of direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS), the interactions between cyclodextrins (CDs) and different Sudan dyes were investigated. The results showed that the host–guest interaction between CDs and Sudan dyes did not affect qualitative analysis of the target compounds, but led to a lower signal intensity for Sudan dyes, thus affecting quantitative analysis of the target compounds. The stronger the host–guest interaction, the weaker the signal intensity of target compound on DART-MS. The results also show that both in solution and in solid-phase microextraction (SPME), the addition of organic solvents can weaken the host–guest interaction between CDs and Sudan dyes, thus improving the signal intensity in DART-MS. In SPME, adding organic solvents has a certain practical value and can improve the efficiency of Sudan dye analysis. This study suggests that appropriate sample pretreatment is needed to weaken noncovalent interactions prior to DART-MS analysis to obtain more accurate quantitative results. The data provide some insight into the effects of other noncovalent interactions on the efficiency of DART-MS as an analytical tool, as well as the potential to study intermolecular interactions with DART-MS. Immobilization of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks with assist of electrodeposited zinc oxide layer and application in online solid-phase microextraction of Sudan dyes

Xu Ling,Zilin Chen

Herein a facile method for immobilization of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) was developed. The ZIFs grew on electrochemically deposited zinc oxide (ZnO) layer while carbon fiber bundle served as substrate. The synthesized ZIFs-ZnO composite was packed into PEEK tube as sorbent for online solid phase microextraction (SPME)-HPLC-UV analysis of Sudan dyes. Good enrichment efficiency (200–461 fold), low limits of detection (0.002 ng mL −1 ) and wide linear ranges (0.02–20 ng mL −1 , correlation coefficient > 0.9996) were achieved. The analytical method was demonstrated to be practical for analysis of Sudan dyes in environmental water samples with good recoveries (83.5%~95.0%).

Decolorization and detoxification of water-insoluble Sudan dye by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 co-cultured with Bacillus circulans BWL1061

Weijie Liu,Yanting You,Di Sun,Shiwei Wang,Jingrong Zhu,Cong Liu

Effluents loaded with various synthetic dyes are considered as a huge burden to the surrounding ecosystems. Sudan dyes are relatively difficult to decolorize due to its water-insolubility. In the present study, the strain Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 was firstly applied to decolorize Sudan dyes under the anaerobic condition , and the physicochemical parameters on the decolorization were optimized. The results demonstrated that the suitable decolorization condition was temperature 26 °C, initial pH 7.0–8.0 and NaCl concentrations 0–20 g/L. Electron competitive acceptors including nitrite, nitrate, dimethyl sulphoxide and oxygen could cause the significant inhibition to the decolorization of Sudan dyes. Biosurfactant rhamnolipid played a positive role in enhancing the decolorization of Sudan I. The co-culture of S. putrefaciens CN32 and Bacillus circulans BWL1061 is reported for the first time to accelerate the decolorization through improving the synergistic effect of enzymatic degradation and biological reductive effect. The highest decolorization of 90.23% to Sudan I was achieved within 108 h, suggesting that co-culture technique has a good potential in the treatment of dyeing wastewater. Furthermore, the microbial toxicity tests indicated that the toxicity of Sudan I to Escherichia coli BL21 and Bacillus subtilis 168 was obviously decreased after the decolorization.

Utilizing polyethyleneimine-capped silver nanoclusters as a new fluorescence probe for Sudan I–IV sensing in ethanol based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer

Ning Yu Chen,Hong Fei Li,Zhong Feng Gao,Fei Qu,Nian Bing Li,Hong Qun Luo

In this work, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between Sudan I–IV and polyethyleneimine-capped silver nanoclusters (PEI-AgNCs), which are smaller than the critical size for electronic energy quantization (∼2   nm), is investigated and subsequently utilized for Sudan I–IV sensing in ethanol. The PEI-AgNCs exhibit strong blue fluorescence when excited at 375   nm, and the fluorescence would be greatly enhanced when the nanoclusters are dissolved in given organic solvents, especially in n-propanol and ethanol. The characteristic emission peak of Ag nanoclusters is centered at 450   nm in ethanol. Upon addition of Sudan dyes, the fluorescence of PEI-AgNCs can be efficiently quenched. The fluorescence quenching efficiency was proportional to the concentration of Sudan dyes. Thus, precise quantification of Sudan I–IV can be made. Under optimum conditions, this fluorescence method shows a wide linear range of 0.4–25   μM Sudan I, 0.4–30   μM Sudan II, 0.2–20   μM Sudan III, and 0.2–25   μM Sudan IV, with the corresponding detection limits (3 σ /slope) of 11.0, 12.2, 8.0, and 7.6   nM, respectively. Using commercial chilli powder as a model sample, detection of Sudan I–IV could be made with satisfactory results. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism for detection of Sudan dyes is discussed.

Synthesis of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer strategy and its application in the Sudan dyes residue analysis

Xiaoyu Xie,Liang Chen,Xiaoyan Pan,Sicen Wang

Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) have become a hotspot owing to the dual functions of target recognition and magnetic separation. In this study, the MMIPs were obtained by the surface-initiated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using Sudan I as the template. The resultant MMIPs were characterized by transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, and X-ray diffraction. Benefiting from the controlled/living property of the RAFT strategy, the uniform MIP layer was successfully grafted on the surface of RAFT agent-modified Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles, favoring the fast mass transfer and rapid binding kinetics. The developed MMIPs were used as the solid-phase extraction sorbents to selectively extract four Sudan dyes (Sudan I, II, III, and IV) from chili powder samples. The recoveries of the spiked samples in chili powder samples ranged from 74.1 to 93.3% with RSD lower than 6.4% and the relative standard uncertainty lower than 0.029. This work provided a good platform for the extraction and removal of Sudan dyes in complicated matrixes and demonstrated a bright future for the application of the well-constructed MMIPs in the field of solid-phase extraction.

Magnetic metal-organic frameworks for fast and efficient solid-phase extraction of six Sudan dyes in tomato sauce

Xin-Ran Shi,Xue-Lei Chen,Yu-Lan Hao,Li Li,Hou-Jun Xu,Man-Man Wang

Magnetic solid-phase extraction is an effective and useful technique to preconcentrate trace analytes from food samples. In this study, a magnetic trimeric chromium octahedral metal-organic framework (Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 @MIL-101) was fabricated and characterized. Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 @MIL-101 was applied as an adsorbent of magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with high performance liquid chromatography to effectively isolate and simultaneously determine six Sudan dyes (Para Red, Sudan I–IV, and Sudan Red 7B) from tomato sauce. Potential factors affecting the MSPE were investigated in detail, and adsorption efficiency of Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 @MIL-101 was compared with those of conventional adsorbents, such as neutral alumina, HLB, and C 18 . The developed method facilitated the extraction with using only 3 mg of adsorbent in 2 min. In addition, enhancement factors of 50, linear range of 0.01–25 μg/mL, and detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.5–2.5 μg/kg were obtained. The intra-day and inter-day recoveries for spiked Sudan dyes were in the range of 72.6%–92.9% and 69.6%–91.6%, respectively, with relative standard deviations of ≤9.2%.

Etched poly(ether ether ketone) jacket stir bar with detachable dumbbell-shaped structure for stir bar sorptive extraction

Wei Zhou,Chenlu Wang,Xuemei Wang,Zilin Chen

Development of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) device with high stability and extraction efficiency is critical and challenging by date. In this work, etched poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) tube with high mechanical strength and large specific surface area was used as jacket for SBSE device. By etching with concentrated sulfuric acid, the smooth outer surface of PEEK become porous with plenty of micro holes, which was beneficial for coating of sorbents and significantly improved the extraction performance. After functionalized by bio-polydopamine method, strong hydrophobic p-naphtholbenzein molecular was immobilized onto the chemical resistant PEEK surface (PNB@E-PEEK) as stationary phase. We also firstly developed a simple detachable dumbbell-shaped structure for improving the workability of PEEK jacket stir bar. The dumbbell-shaped construction can eliminate the friction between stir bar and container, and the design of detachable structure make elution can be accomplished easier with small amount of organic solvent. It was interesting that the developed detachable dumbbell-shaped PNB@E-PEEK stir bar showed exceptional stability and extraction efficiency for SBSE enrichment of multiple analytes including several Sudan dyes, triazines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkaloids and flavonoid. By coupling with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV), PNB@E-PEEK stir bar based SBSE-HPLC-UV method was applied for the analysis of common Sudan dye pollutants. The method showed low limits of detection (0.02-0.03 ng/mL), good linearity (R 2  ≥ 0.9979) and good reproducibility (relative standard deviation ≤ 7.96%). It has been successfully applied to determine three dye pollutants in tap and lake water.

High Internal Phase Emulsion Polymeric Monolith Extraction Coupling with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography for the Determination of Para Red and Sudan Dyes in Chilli Samples

Du Fuyou,Zheng Xian,Deng Jianchao,Zou Jiao,Zeng Qiulian,Li Jianping,Ruan Guihua

Polymerized high internal phase emulsion (polyHIPE) monoliths were synthesized by in situ polymerization of the continuous phase of a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) in syringes and successfully applied as monolithic sorbents to extract Para Red and Sudan dyes in chilli samples. Several parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were investigated, including the type of desorption solvent, sample loading rate, sample volume, and pH. Under the optimized conditions, a method using a monolithic polyHIPE column combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed for the simultaneous extraction and sensitive determination of Para Red and Sudan dyes in chilli samples. The proposed method had good linearity, with correlation coefficients ( R 2 ) from 0.9985 to 0.9995 and low detection limits (LODs, S/N = 3) in the range 1.5–12 ng/mL for the five analytes. The mean recoveries were ranged from 82.6 to 114.3% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 4.2%.

Magnetic naphthalene-based polyimide polymer for extraction of Sudan dyes in chili sauce

Kai Hu,Jingyi Qiao,Weixia Zhu,Xiaohui Chen,Chunhong Dong

A facile and rapid method was reported for the preparation of magnetic nanocomposite of naphthalene-based polyimide polymer modified Fe 3 O 4 (Fe 3 O 4 @NPI), which was characterized and explored as sorbents for extraction of Sudan dyes (Sudan I, II, III and IV) in chili sauce prior to their HPLC determination. Some potential parameters influencing the MSPE efficiency were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Under the optimal experimental conditions an approach for the analysis of Sudan dyes was developed by coupling with high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). Good linearity ( r  > 0.9932) with linear range of 0.05–50 ng L −1 was obtained. The enrichment factors, LODs and LOQs for the proposed method were found to be in the ranges of 80.9–88.9, 0.02–0.05 ng g −1 and 0.07–0.17 ng g −1 , respectively. The method was utilized to analyze target Sudan dyes in real chili sauce samples, and sufficient recoveries ranged from 92.6 to 98.6% were obtained with RSDs <5.8%. These results indicate that the prepared Fe 3 O 4 @NPI is an effective sorbent for the extraction of Sudan dyes prior determination.

Novel Cu2+-based immobilized metal affinity magnetic nanoparticles for fast magnetic solid-phase extraction of trace Sudan dyes in food samples

Wei Zhou,Xin Wang,Youping Liu,Weikang Zhang,Xin Di

A novel type of Cu 2+ -based immobilized metal affinity magnetic nanoparticles (MHNTs@PDA@Cu 2+ ) was designed and synthesized by a facile and green strategy, and served as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of trace Sudan dyes in foodstuffs. Owing to π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic and Cu 2+ -azo coordination, MHNTs@PDA@Cu 2+ possesses superior affinity and very fast adsorption capability to Sudan dyes (adsorption time of 1 min). The main parameters influencing the extraction efficiency of MSPE were investigated and optimized. By coupling MHNTs@PDA@Cu 2+ -based MSPE with HPLC-UV, a simple, fast and sensitive method for the determination of trace Sudan dyes in food samples were developed. Good linearity (R 2  ≥ 0.9937) and low limits of detection (0.06–0.10 μg L −1 ) were obtained. The method was successfully applied to determine Sudan dyes in juice, soy sauce and red wine, and the recoveries for the spiked samples ranged from 78.1% to 112.4% with RSD less than 9.0%.

Flower-like layered double hydroxide-modified stainless-steel fibers for online in-tube solid-phase microextraction of Sudan dyes

Zaicheng Yuan,Wei Zhou,Zilin Chen

Layered double hydroxides are a family of inorganic crystals that have gained a lot of attention due to its special structure and properties such as high porosity, large specific area, and excellent anion exchange ability. In this work, flower-like NiAl-layered double hydroxides with high specific area were in situ immobilized onto the stainless steel fibers by bioinspired polydopamine modification method and packed into poly (ether ether) ketone tube for online solid-phase microextraction with high performance liquid chromatography analysis. Thanks to the high specific surface area and excellent extraction ability of the NiAl-layered double hydroxides, the fibers showed excellent extraction performance to three Sudan dyes with enrichment factors between 260 to 650 folds. After optimization of the reaction and extraction conditions, an online solid-phase microextraction method was developed for determination of Sudan dyes in water samples and chili samples. The method has limits of detection of 0.01 to 0.02 ng/mL, good linearity and good reproducibility (≤1.45%).
