High-sensitive electrochemical sensor of Sudan I based on template-directed self-assembly of graphene-ZnSe quantum dots hybrid structure

Ling Wang,Ran Yang,Jianjun Li,Lingbo Qu,Peter de B. Harrington

In this work, a very sensitive electrochemical sensor for Sudan I was established based on nanohybrids of graphene-ZnSe quantum dots . Positively charged cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) functionalized graphene was used as a template-directed building block to self-assemble negatively charged ZnSe quantum dots (QDs). The hybrids of ZnSe-CTAB-graphene exhibited strong enrichment effect on Sudan I and gave superior electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of Sudan I. Applying differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), the peak current of Sudan I is proportional to its concentration in the range from 0.004 to 2.0   μM and 2.0 to 15.0   μM. This report is the first on applying graphene-ZnSe hybrids for electrochemical sensing.

Rapid determination of illegally added Sudan I in cake by triphenylamine functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane fluorescence sensor

Dan Li,Peipei Zhou,Yufei Hu,Gongke Li,Ling Xia

Triphenylamine functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS@TPA) was prepared using the Friedel-Crafts reaction with tris(4-bromophenyl)amine (TPA) as the functional monomer and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) as the framework. The as-prepared POSS@TPA has a stable structure and accomplished pore performance, allowing for the selective adsorption of Sudan I and result in the fluorescence quenches of POSS@TPA. Thus, the POSS@TPA could be used as sensors to fluorescence detect 0.12–7.4 mg/L Sudan I, with a detection limit of 0.091 mg/L. Moreover, the POSS@TPA have good reuseability can be reused more than 5 cycles after washing. Noteworthily, the response time of POSS@TPA for determination was as short as 1 min. Furthermore, the sensor was effectively used to determine Sudan I in cakes with excellent recoveries (86.4–108.8 %) and relative standard deviations (2.5–4.9 %). The results matched those of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Our work shows great potential in terms of the rapid detection of food safety.

Dan Zhao,Zhixia Zhang,Xuemei Liu,Rui Zhang,Xincai Xiao

The preparation of long-wavelength emitting carbon dots (CDs) with good antibacterial function and biosensing ability through element doping method is the hotspot of present researches. This paper reports the rapid synthesis of nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped long wavelength-emitting CDs (N, P-CDs, λ em  = 530 nm) under low reaction temperature (30 min, 60 °C). This method used glucose, polyethyleneimine and phosphoric acid as raw materials, and each raw material worked multi-functionally during the synthesis process. The impacts of raw materials and reaction parameters upon optical properties of prepared N, P-CDs have been studied, and the synthesis mechanism has been discussed. Meanwhile, N, P-CDs were used as antibacterial material with minimum inhibitory concentrations against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli at 7.5 μg·mL −1 and 0.5 mg·mL −1 respectively. The prepared CDs were also used to realize fluorescence imaging of S. aureus , and work as fluorescence probe to detect Sudan Red I with limit of detection at 43 nM.

Multivalent SnO2 quantum dot-decorated Ti3C2 MXene for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of Sudan I in food

Lin Mei,Yanmei Shi,Yange Shi,Pengpeng Yan,Chunlei Lin,Yue Sun,Bingjie Wei,Jing Li

Quantum dots functionalization has been proven to be a simple modification strategy for improving the electroanalytical performance of two-dimensional electrode materials by increasing the specific surface area and active reaction sites. Herein, a new electrochemical sensing platform was fabricated by SnO2 quantum dot-functionalized Ti3C2 MXene (Ti3C2-SnO2QDs) for the highly sensitive detection of Sudan I in food. Ti3C2-SnO2QDs were prepared via in situ synthesis, which can control the nucleation and growth of SnO2QDs, resulting in the well-dispersed SnO2QDs with 2–3 nm size on the intersheet surface of MXene. Moreover, the formation of Ti3C2-SnO2QDs can effectively restrict the aggregation of Ti3C2 and improve the stability of SnO2QDs in aquatic environment. The prepared nanocomposite can be used as an improved modified material to further increase the electrocatalytic performance and electrochemical signal of Sudan I on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. Under optimized conditions, the proposed analytical method displayed a linear dependence for Sudan I concentration ranging from 0.008 to 10 μM with a detection limit of 0.27 nM (S/N = 3) by electrochemical cyclic voltammetry. This sensor with excellent selectivity, reproducibility and accuracy was quantitatively validated in commercial ketchup and chili powder. This Ti3C2-SnO2QDs-based Sudan I sensor is expected to expand the application of MXene nanocomposites in electrochemical analysis and is envisioned as a promising candidate for monitoring illegal food additives in real food samples.

Ultrasensitive and selective electrochemical detection of Sudan I based on platinum nanoparticles functionalized cobalt trioxide and carbon nanotubes derived zeolitic imidazolate frameworks

Qian Lei,Zhenting Zhao,Wenda Wang,Yong Chen,Jie Hu,Lin Chen

Ultrasensitive determination of Sudan I is critically important for food products due to its potential carcinogenicity. Herein, an electrochemical sensor was developed for Sudan I detection by using nanocomposites-based glassy carbon electrodes (GCE). Cobalt trioxides (Co 3 O 4 ) dodecahedron were initially derived from zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF) and interconnected by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). After that, the Co 3 O 4 -CNTs complexes were functionalized with platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs), giving rise to a hierarchic system (PtNPs@Co 3 O 4 -CNTs/GCE) ultrasensitive to the cooperative binding activity of Sudan I. The electrochemical responses of as-proposed PtNPs@Co 3 O 4 -CNTs/GCE sensors have been evaluated toward Sudan I detection under different optimum conditions. Especially, the obtained results demonstrated that the Pt 4.5 NPs@(Co 3 O 4 ) 1 -(CNTs) 1 /GCE sensor exhibits the superior electrochemical responses with high sensitivity (27870 μA·mM −1 ·cm −2 ), wide linear range (0.03 μM-100 μM) and low limit of detection (0.005 μM, S/N = 3). These results are promising for the development of high performance sensors of Sudan I which can be used for various food applications.

Machine learning combined with electrochemical sensor for rapid detection of Sudan Red I in food

Sun Xi,Liu Feng,Xue Xiao

Ensuring food safety necessitates rapid and reliable food contaminant detection methods. Here, we present a novel approach that integrates electrochemical sensors with machine learning to detect Sudan Red I in food. Our study showcases a modified stainless steel needle (SSN) electrode adorned with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and investigates three distinct convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures: Inception V1, ResNet-50, and SqueezeNet V1.1. This combination aims to predict the sensor response accurately. The AgNPs/SSN electrode displays heightened electrochemical activity towards Sudan Red I, offering a linear detection range of 0.1–20 μM and an exceptional 10 nM detection limit. Notably, the Inception V1 and ResNet-50 networks exhibit superior predictive capability compared to SqueezeNet V1.1. Our interdisciplinary approach establishes a rapid, sensitive, and dependable detection system for food contaminants. By fusing electrochemical sensors with machine learning, we propel the development of intelligent detection systems with significant implications for food safety enhancement. Graphical abstract

Multifunctional Carbon Dots-Based Fluorescence Detection for Sudan I, Sudan IV and Tetracycline Hydrochloride in Foods

Min Zhang,Hongmei Yu,Xiaodan Tang,Xiuhui Zhu,Shuping Deng,Wei Chen

Sudan dyes are strictly prohibited from being added to edible products as carcinogens and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) remaining in animal-derived food may cause harm to the human body. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a high-sensitivity, simple and convenient method for the detection of Sudan dyes and TC in foods for safety purposes. In this work, multifunctional blue fluorescent carbon dots (B-CDs) were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis using glucose as the carbon source. The results show that the fluorescence intensity of B-CDs was significantly affected by the acidity of the solution and can be quenched by Sudan I, IV and TC through selective studies. Interestingly, the fluorescence quenching intensities of B-CDs have a good linear relationship with the concentration of Sudan I and IV at pH = 3–7. The wide range of pH is beneficial to broaden the application of B-CDs in a practical samples analysis. The method has been successfully applied to real food samples of tomato paste, palm oil and honey, and the detection limits are 26.3 nM, 54.2 nM and 31.1 nM for Sudan I, Sudan IV and TC, respectively. This method integrates Sudan dyes and TC into the same multifunctional B-CDs, which shows that the sensor has a great potential in food safety detection.

Fabrication of CuO nanoparticles-decorated 3D N-doped porous carbon as electrochemical sensing platform for the detection of Sudan I

Qiumin Ye,Xiaohui Chen,Jing Yang,Datong Wu,Jianfeng Ma,Yong Kong

In this study, a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensing platform for the detection of Sudan I was developed with CuO nanoparticles-decorated 3D N -doped porous carbon (CuO/3DNPC). 3D N -doped porous carbon (3DNPC) was first prepared by calcining the precursors of 3D integrated polysaccharides, and then it was decorated with CuO nanoparticles by hydrothermal method. The CuO/3DNPC modified electrode showed high sensitivity and wide linear range for the detection of Sudan I due to the excellent electrocatalytic activity of CuO and the accelerated electron transfer by 3DNPC. In addition, the proposed CuO/3DNPC also exhibited high selectivity, high reproducibility and stability in the detection of Sudan I. Finally, the CuO/3DNPC based Sudan I sensor was applied in the detection of Sudan I in ketchup and chilli sauces, and the results demonstrated the potential of the developed CuO/3DNPC as a promising electrode material for accurate assay of Sudan I in food samples.

Voltammetric Sensor for Sudan I Based on Glassy Carbon Electrode Modified by SWCNT/β-Cyclodextrin Conjugate

Yu Cao,Zhihui Fang,Duanguang Yang,Yong Gao,Huaming Li

We reported a sensitive voltammetric sensor for Sudan I determination by modifying glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)/β-cyclodextrin conjugate. The cyclic voltammetry results showed that the modified GCE exhibited strong catalytic activity toward the electro-reduction of Sudan I with a well-defined cyclic voltammetric peak at -673 mV. Differential pulse voltammetry measurement showed that the response current exhibited a linear range between 50 nM and 5 μM, and the detection limit was as low as 2.22 nM (S/N = 3). The enhanced electrochemical performance of the fabricated sensor was attributed to the combination of the excellent electrocatalytic properties of SWCNTs and the molecular recognition ability of β-cyclodextrin to Sudan I. The sensor was successfully applied to determine Sudan I in real food samples with satisfactory results.

Fabrication of gold nanoparticles-decorated reduced graphene oxide as a high performance electrochemical sensing platform for the detection of toxicant Sudan I

Junhua Li,Haibo Feng,Jun Li,Yonglan Feng,Yaqian Zhang,Jianbo Jiang,Dong Qian

In this paper, we are presenting a facile, green and in situ synthesis strategy for the convenient preparation of well-dispersed gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-decorated reduced graphene oxide (RGO) without the use of any template molecules and poisonous reductant. The as-synthesized nanocomposite has been detailedly characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis as well as electrochemical technologies. The morphological and structural characterizations illustrate that AuNPs can be efficiently decorated on RGO with the Au content of 20.33   wt% in the matrix and the size of the embedded AuNPs vary between 25 and 40   nm. The electrochemical investigations confirm that the small-sized AuNPs on the RGO film can remarkably boost the electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of Sudan I, which can be used as an enhanced electrochemical sensing platform for the sensitively detection of the toxicant Sudan I. Moreover, the kinetic parameter studies demonstrate that the Sudan I electro-oxidation at the AuNPs/RGO electrode is a diffusion-controlled process which involves two-electron and two-proton transfer. Under the optimal conditions, a wide linear range of Sudan I detection from 0.01 to 70   μmol   L −1 with good linearity ( R 2   =   0.9965, 0.9942) and a low detection limit (1.0   nmol   L −1 , S/N   =   3) were obtained. In comparison with the existing analogues ever reported, the AuNPs/RGO eletrode exhibits overwhelmingly superior comprehensive properties for the sensitive detection of Sudan I. Finally, the newly developed sensor was applied to quantitative determination of Sudan I in food samples such as chilli powder and ketchup sauce with satisfactory sensitivity, selectivity and reversibility.

A facile, fast and intelligent fluorescent sensing strategy for Sudan I detection based on perovskite quantum dots encoded hollow imprinting microspheres

Xiaolei Zhao,Ya Chen,Lu Yu,Zhixiang Xu,Zhonghui Han,Jinxing He

Due to the globalized supply of food and rapid development of the food industry, food contamination has become a leading cause of food safety problems. In this study, a fluorescent sensing system for the fast and sensitive analysis of Sudan I was developed based on hollow molecularly imprinted polymers and a fluorescent encoding technique by using CsPbX 3 perovskite quantum dots as the fluorescent elements. The introduction of hollow structure provided a high loading capacity, faster encoding efficiency, and shorter detection time. After loading Sudan I, the fluorescent intensity was obviously quenched. Under the optimized detection conditions, this analysis method achieved good linearity in the range of 0.1–300 μg L −1 , a limit detection of 0.05 μg L −1 , and spiked recoveries of 94.91 %–105.36 % in food samples. The whole detection process can be completed within 10 min. Importantly, this work also provided a smartphone-assisted intelligent detection platform for the visual and real-time analysis of Sudan I.

Electrochemical behaviour of Sudan I at Fe3O4 nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode and its determination in food samples

Huanshun Yin,Yunlei Zhou,Xiaomeng Meng,Tiantian Tang,Shiyun Ai,Lusheng Zhu

In this work, a simple and sensitive electrochemical method was developed to determine Sudan I based on magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The sensor exhibited an obviously electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of Sudan I, which can be confirmed by the increased oxidation peak current and the decreased oxidation peak potential when compared with the bare GCE. The determination conditions, such as pH, modifier amount, accumulation time and accumulation potential, were optimised. And some kinetic parameters were calculated. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the oxidation current of Sudan I was proportional to its concentration from 0.01 to 1   μM and 1 to 20   μM. The detection limit was estimated to be 0.001   μM ( S / N   =   3). The developed method was successfully applied to determine Sudan I content in food samples with satisfactory results.
