Aerobic Biodegradation Characteristic of Different Water-Soluble Azo Dyes

Shixiong Sheng,Bo Liu,Xiangyu Hou,Bing Wu,Fang Yao,Xinchun Ding,Lin Huang

This study investigated the biodegradation performance and characteristics of Sudan I and Acid Orange 7 (AO7) to improve the biological dye removal efficiency in wastewater and optimize the treatment process. The dyes with different water-solubility and similar molecular structure were biologically treated under aerobic condition in parallel continuous-flow mixed stirred reactors. The biophase analysis using microscopic examination suggested that the removal process of the two azo dyes is different. Removal of Sudan I was through biosorption, since it easily assembled and adsorbed on the surface of zoogloea due to its insolubility, while AO7 was biodegraded incompletely and bioconverted, the AO7 molecule was decomposed to benzene series and inorganic ions, since it could reach the interior area of zoogloea due to the low oxidation-reduction potential conditions and corresponding anaerobic microorganisms. The transformation of NH3-N, SO42−together with the presence of tryptophan-like components confirm that AO7 can be decomposed to non-toxic products in an aerobic bioreactor. This study provides a theoretical basis for the use of biosorption or biodegradation mechanisms for the treatment of different azo dyes in wastewater. Keywords:azo dye;aerobic biodegradation;Acid Orange 7;Sudan I;solubility

The enrichment of 7Li by extraction with a Sudan I-Ionic liquid system

Huangda Li,Jinhe Sun,Yongzhong Jia,Pengrui Zhang,Huiqun Ju,Lianjing Mao,Zhiyu Zhao,Xiao Li,Bo Li,Yan Jing,Fei Shao

Lithium isotopes with high abundances (6Li and 7Li) are crucial for the advancement of nuclear energy. In order to achieve the effective separation of 7Li, a Sudan I-[HMIm][BF4]-anisole extraction system was built employing Sudan I (1-benzeneazo-2-naphthol) as the extractant and hydrophobic ionic liquid [HMIm][BF4] as the co-extractant. By optimizing the organic and aqueous phase components, the extraction rate of the system could reach up to 26.30%, and the single-stage separation factor of the system could reach 1.015 ± 0.001. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the extraction process was investigated, and it was found that the ratio of Sudan I to lithium ions is 1 : 1, and the thermodynamic enthalpy change of the extraction process was less than zero (ΔH < 0), indicating that the extraction process of the system was an exothermic process. The construction of the Sudan-ionic liquid extraction separation system provides a new idea for the study of 7Li enrichment and separation and also provides a possibility for the industrialization of high-abundance 7Li enrichment.

A simple sensing platform based on a 1T@2H-MoS2/cMWCNTs composite modified electrode for ultrasensitive detection of illegal Sudan I dye in food samples

Qiaoling Wu,Chun Ji,Lingli Zhang,Qili Shi,Yuangen Wu,Han Tao

The work presented here describes a highly sensitive and simple electrochemical sensor for the detection of Sudan I dye based on a nanocomposite made of MoS2 heterogeneous nanosheets (1T@2H-MoS2) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (cMWCNTs) (1T@2H-MoS2/cMWCNTs). XPS results indicate that the content of 1T phase MoS2 was estimated to be 72% in 1T@2H-MoS2. Electron microscopy results show that the tubular cMWCNTs are uniformly interwoven in MoS2 nanosheets to form a three-dimensional network structure. Due to the synergistic electrocatalytic ability and high electroactive surface area, the 1T@2H-MoS2/cMWCNTs modified electrode demonstrated excellent analytical performance for Sudan I, including simple operation, good stability and a wide linear range from 5.00 × 10−9 to 2.00 × 10−6 mol L−1 and 2.00 × 10−6 to 1.00 × 10−4 mol L−1 with an ultra-low detection limit of 1.56 × 10−9 mol L−1. The recoveries of Sudan I from spiked real samples (chilli powder and ketchup) were in the range of 95.60% to 106.10% with low RSD (<5%), indicating that the 1T@2H-MoS2/cMWCNTs modified electrode is a promising tool for the analysis of illegal Sudan I in food samples.

Electrochemistry of ZnO@reduced graphene oxides

Junxing Hao,Liudi Ji,Kangbing Wu,Nianjun Yang

To explore electrochemistry of the composites of ZnO and reduced graphene oxides (rGO), graphene oxide (GO) was in-situ reduced with Zn powders. The morphology and micro-structure of synthesized ZnO@rGO composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , and atomic force microscope . Energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman, and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to clarify the chemical composition of ZnO@rGO composites. Electrochemical properties of ZnO@rGO composites were studied using cyclic voltammetry and impedance, revealing a large surface area and many active sites. Accordingly, electrochemical sensing of a neutral organic dye Sudan I and a charged metal ion Pb 2+ was achieved on ZnO@rGO composites. The strategy of in-situ reduction of GO with Zn powders thus owns great application prospects in constructing a universal and sensitive electrochemical sensing platform.

New synthesis of self-assembly ionic liquid functionalized reduced graphene oxide–gold nanoparticle composites for electrochemical determination of Sudan I

Meiling Wang,Zhengnian Chen,Yaomin Chen,Chunjin Zhan,Jianwei Zhao

Positively charged gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were self-assembled onto the surfaces of 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIM-Cl) functionalized reduced graphene oxide sheets (RGO) here. The AMIM-Cl functionalized RGO (ILRGO) loaded with AuNPs (ILRGO@AuNPs) modified glass carbon electrodes (GCEs) possess larger effective specific surface areas which can favor the adsorption of more Sudan I into the working electrode . So the ILRGO@AuNPs composites were successfully used for the fabrication of a facile and sensitive sensor for the determination of Sudan I. And the prepared sensor exhibits a broad linear range for Sudan I spanned 4 orders of magnitude from 1.0   ×   10 −   10 to 1.0   ×   10 −   6   M and a detection limit as low as 5.0   ×   10 −   11   M (S/N   =   3). It is expected that this green sensor can be applied in the determination of other similar dyes.

In-situ electrospun aligned and maize-like AgNPs/PVA@Ag nanofibers for surface-enhanced Raman scattering on arbitrary surface

Xiaofei Zhao,Chonghui Li,Zhen Li,Jing Yu,Jie Pan,Haipeng Si,Cheng Yang,Shouzhen Jiang,Chao Zhang,Baoyuan Man

An efficient electrospun aligned surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and maize-like substrate of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite and Ag colloid nanofibers decorated with thermal evaporated Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been developed by taking advantage of electrostatic interactions. The synergistic effects of the evaporated AgNPs (niblets) and the Ag colloid in PVA (corncob) could arouse strong electromagnetic field between the lateral and vertical nanogaps which has been demonstrated by experiment and finite-different time-domain (FDTD) simulation. In this experiment, the aligned nanofibers possesses an excellent sensitivity by detection of crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG) molecule at low concentration. Moreover, the proposed flexible SERS sensor was measured with outstanding uniformity and reproducibility. We also carried out in-situ electrospinning on a curved surface to detect the mixture of Sudan I, CV and MG molecule, which demonstrates that flexible SERS sensor, has enormous potential in accurate and in-situ detection on the complex geometric structure.

Hollow MOFs-based biomimetic encoded microspheres as versatile probes for dual-mode ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform coupling instrumental and smartphone-assisted analysis of Sudan I

Xueyong Qiao,Rongrong Yang,Zhonghui Han,Lei Lü,Xiaolei Zhao,Jinxing He

Background The accurate, ultrasensitive, and on-site detection of pollutants is critical for public health. As a carcinogen, Sudan I is strictly forbidden from use in food products at any levels. However, the conventional method suffers from the high instrument cost and complex procedure, resulting in poor sensitivity, low portability, and long detection time. A ratiometric fluorescence sensor offers a promising prospect for the ultra-rapid, high sensitivity, visual detection, and “point-of-care” testing. The objective of this work was to address the insufficient selectivity of fluorescence probe and enhance the recognition capability and mass transfer rate while diversifying their signal output modes. Results In this study, a novel hollow metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) structural biomimetic nanosensor was developed for the specific recognition and rapid analysis of Sudan I. The sensor separately integrated CsPbCl 1.5 Br 1.5 perovskite quantum dots and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots as dual-emission fluorophores into hollow MOFs-based molecularly imprinted polymers, acting as the recognition element and a signal carrier. The hollow architecture significantly improved mass transfer efficiency, reducing response time to 10 min. The developed nanosensor in instrumental analysis mode exhibited a linearity within the range of 2.00–200.00 μg L −1 at a method's detection limit of 1.00 μg L −1 , indicating high accuracy with recoveries of 88.00–109.65 % in real samples. Furthermore, a smartphone-based portable platform was designed for on-site intelligence detection with a good linear range (0.15–5.00 μg mL −1 ), a method's detection limit of 0.05 μg mL −1 , and recoveries ranging from 80.20 % to 109.00 %, allowing for real-time quantitative monitoring of Sudan I. Significance This study employs hollow MOFs as support materials for in-situ growth of the imprinting layer, ensuring high adsorption capability and rapid binding. The successful implementation of two detection modes provides a comprehensive solution from laboratory precision to field application. Particularly, the portable sensing system enables real-time and on-site quantitative monitoring. This work exhibits the significant potential for the high-performance chemical sensing and point-of-care detection of food contaminants.

Real-time interface monitoring and active focusing for high-fidelity multi-material DLP 3D printing

Yuhao Guo,Xiangjun Zha,Xinyu Huang,Zhicheng Cheng,Tingxian Ling,Jigang Huang

Top-down digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing is a promising approach for high-resolution and multi-material fabrication. However, the unconstrained resin surface often leads to curing outside the focal plane during the printing process, resulting in significant losses in manufacturing accuracy. To address this defocusing issue, we propose an improved top-down DLP 3D printing method that enables real-time calibration of the resin level, ensuring each layer is printed precisely on the focal plane. This approach reduces the deviation between the curing plane and the focal plane from hundreds of microns to just a few microns, significantly enhancing printing resolution and surface finish. Additionally, the method allows for the fabrication of multi-material objects with gradual interfaces in a single vat, improving bonding strength between different materials. Moreover, by controlling the resin level, the proposed technique facilitates material switching between multiple vats while maintaining a constant curing plane, enabling the creation of high-fidelity multi-material structures. This innovative strategy advances the field of DLP 3D printing by offering a rapid, precise, and versatile solution for high-resolution and multi-material fabrication.

4D printing of dual-stage curing ink for graded functional materials and direct, robust, integrated shape morphing

Yafei Wang,Weiqian Liang,Wei Cai,Jingyi Zhang,Weijia Guo,Biyun Qi,He Zhang,Haibao Lu,Zhen Ding

4D printing marks a significant leap beyond traditional 3D printing, enabling structures to morph and adapt dynamically to changing environmental conditions. Research efforts are increasingly being focused on this promising technology. Existing 4D printing methods, however, typically rely on shape-changing mechanisms that operate after material solidification in the 3D printing process, necessitating additional energy inputs or even manual mechanical interventions. In this study, we introduce a novel 4D printing approach that employs a specially designed dual-stage curing ink optimized for grayscale Digital Light Processing (g-DLP) 3D printing. This novel approach not only grants precise, on-demand control over the material properties of the printed structures but also seamlessly integrates shape transformation into the thermal curing stage of the 3D printing process, eliminating the need for extra energy or manual steps. Furthermore, these transformed shapes demonstrate exceptional robustness and permanence, as evidenced by our experimental results. We conduct a comprehensive investigation into the grayscale-dependent mechanical properties of this ink and highlight its potential applications through auxetic metamaterial lattice structures. The underlying mechanism behind this direct shape morphing during thermal curing is explored in depth, and effectively demonstrated in achieving desired shape transformations across various printed structures. The good agreement between our experimental results and simulations provides robust validation of our methodology. Our study provides a reliable framework for designing and optimizing 4D-printed structures with tailored properties and deformation behaviors, paving the way for future applications in various fields.

Fluorescence detection of malachite green in fish tissue using red emissive Se,N,Cl-doped carbon dots

Yaoping Hu,Zhijin Gao,Junfei Luo

Facile detection of malachite green (MG), a toxic dye, in aquaculture is urgently demanded for environment and food safety. Herein, we design a novel fluorescent probe, namely red emissive Se,N,Cl-doped carbon dots (CDs), to accurately determinate MG. CDs are prepared by hydrothermal treatment of selenourea and o-phenylenediamine in HCl solution. This material exhibits excitation-independent dual emissions at 625 and 679 nm, with a high quantum yield of 23.6%. A selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor toward MG is established based on inner filter effect, because both the excitation and emission light of CDs can be strongly absorbed by MG. The fluorescence quenching of CDs is linear to the MG concentration over the range of 0.07–2.50 μM with a low detection limit of 21 nM. Trace-level analysis of MG in fish tissue is successfully explored, demonstrating the great potential of the proposed sensor for MG monitoring in aquatic products.

Toward high-efficiency multi-material additive manufacturing: a two-step hybrid fabrication strategy

Zhengda Chen,Dawei Fu,Xiangjun Zha,Huan Qi,Jigang Huang

Multi-material objects enable the integration of diverse properties and functionalities through precise three-dimensional material arrangement. Recent research highlights additive manufacturing as a pioneering approach for fabricating these complex structures, offering unprecedented control over spatial material distribution. However, it faces significant limitations when producing multi-material objects in the traditional layer-by-layer manner, as the approach requires frequent material switching, making the process prohibitively time-consuming. In this work, we present a two-step multi-material additive manufacturing strategy which achieves the fabrication of multi-material objects by capillary-driving the materials into the pre-printed framework and curing them with external energy sources. This strategy fundamentally eliminates the frequent material switching that occurs in traditional multi-material printing, thereby significantly enhancing the manufacturing efficiency of multi-material objects. Moreover, this strategy accommodates materials previously incompatible with conventional 3D printing. Tailored mechanical properties of multi-material structures can be achieved by adjusting the porosity and position of the framework. By adding stimulus-responsive materials into the multi-material structure, the strategy also enables 4D printing. This strategy opens a new avenue for the development of multi-material additive manufacturing.

Capillarity-assisted rapid multi-material 3D printing of heterogeneous objects

Zhengda Chen,Xiangjun Zha,Cheng Wen,Kun Li,Jigang Huang,Wei Pu

Multi-material objects offer enhanced functionality by strategic integration of different materials, allowing tailored properties to meet specific performance requirements. Digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing, featuring high resolution and fast speed, has emerged as a leading method for creating single-material structures. However, it faces significant limitations when producing multi-material objects in the traditional layer-by-layer matter, as the approach requires frequent material switching, making the process prohibitively time-consuming. To address this challenge, we present a capillarity assisted multi-material 3D printing (CMM-3DP) method that leverages capillary pressure to generate multi-material objects block by block. This innovative approach achieves printing speeds with over a hundred times faster than the current multi-material DLP 3D printing. CMM-3DP demonstrates remarkable versatility, accommodating not only photosensitive materials such as hydrogels, polymers, and elastomers but also thermal curable resins and liquid metals—materials previously incompatible with conventional DLP 3D printing. By eliminating the layer-by-layer material switching process, CMM-3DP allows multi-material objects to be fabricated while avoiding both intricate motion system and resin contamination issue. Using a body centered cubic (BCC) array as the capillary structure, our research demonstrates that CMM-3DP can successfully create multi-material architectures ranging from micrometer to centimeter scale. Moreover, the versatility of CMM-3DP is validated by successful fabrication of various applications, including stimuli-responsive objects, flexible actuator, electric circuit, and biomimetic human hand. Our method substantially enhances the multi-material fabrication capability of DLP 3D printing, facilitating potential applications with multi-material devices.
