In this study, the hydrated sodium aluminosilicate material was synthesized by one-step hydrothermal alkaline desilication using fly ash (FA) as raw material. The synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, XRF, FT-IR and SEM. The characterization results showed that the alkali-soluble desilication successfully had synthesized the sodium aluminosilicate crystalline (N-A-S-H) phase of sodalite-type (SOD), and the modified material had good ionic affinity and adsorption capacity. In order to figure out the suitability of SOD as an adsorbent for the removal of ammonium and phosphorus from wastewater, the effects of material dosing, contact time, ambient pH and initial solute concentration on the simultaneous removal of ammonium and phosphorus are investigated by intermittent adsorption tests. Under the optimal adsorption conditions, the removal rate of ammonium was 73.3%, the removal rate of phosphate was 85.8% and the unit adsorption capacity reached 9.15 mg/L and 2.14 mg/L, respectively. Adsorption kinetic studies showed that the adsorption of ammonium and phosphorus by SOD was consistent with a quasi-secondary kinetic model. The adsorption isotherm analysis showed that the equilibrium data were in good agreement with the Langmuir and Freundlich model. According to thermodynamic calculations, the adsorption of ammonium and phosphorus was found to be a heat-absorbing and spontaneous process. Therefore, the preparation of SOD by modified FA has good adsorption properties as adsorbent and has excellent potential for application in the removal of contaminants from wastewater.Keywords:N-A-S-H;sodalite;simultaneous removal;ammonium;phosphorus

Graphical Into the Matrix : Mixed-matrix membranes with uniformly dispersed nanosized sodalite crystals in a polymeric matrix are prepared. The sodalite nanocrystals are synthesized free of organic template with large external surface area and monomodal particle-size distribution. The sodalite nanocrystals with a suitable aperture size of the cages (2.8 Å) allow only H 2 to penetrate whereas N 2 is rejected. The mixed-matrix membranes show high H 2 flux and selectivity and will be of great importance for synthetic ammonia processing, which demands and releases a large amount of H 2 . Nanosized sodalite (Nano-SOD) crystals were used as active filler to prepare mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) for promoting the H 2 /N 2 gas-separation performance. The Nano-SOD crystals with extremely small crystallites (40–50 nm) were synthesized from a colloidal suspension free of organic structural directing agent and uniformly dispersed in the polyetherimide (PEI) matrix. The Nano-SOD filler with a suitable aperture size (2.8 Å) allowed only H 2 molecules to pass through and rejected the N 2 , thus improving the selectivity of the membranes. The high dispersion of Nano-SOD crystals in the polymer matrix and the interactions between the inorganic and organic phases greatly improved the membrane separation performance and minimized interfacial holes. The MMMs showed a high H 2 permeability (≈7155.1 Barrer at 25 °C under atmospheric pressure) and an ideal H 2 /N 2 selectivity factor of approximately 16.9 in a single gas test. Moreover, in a gas mixture (H 2 /N 2 , 25–100 °C), the selectivity factor increased significantly to approximately 30.9. The high stability of the MMMs, which consist of highly dispersed Nano-SOD crystals in a PEI matrix for H 2 /N 2 separation (6 weeks continuous test), makes them an important material for ammonia synthesis applications that require and also release a large amount of H 2 .

The sluggish kinetics of Fe(II) regeneration and inactive Fe(III) sludge accumulation strongly hampers the scientific progress of Fenton-related reactions toward practical application. Herein, we developed a durable zero-valent iron super dispersed sodalite-graphene oxide hybrid (Z@GO-SOD) via reactive oxidation species (ROSs) route using industrial waste lithium silicon fume (LSF) as raw material, and first applied it as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst to initiate Fenton-like reaction for effective ciprofloxacin (CIP) remediation. The Z@GO-SOD featured a mesoporous structure with iron strongly interaction with GO hybrid zeolite, the GO hybrid zeolite acted as an efficient mediator, facilitating charge separation and transportation to expedite the iron redox cycle. The presence of persulfate could further act as an electron acceptor to boost photogenerated e − /h + separation, resulting in more OH for fast CIP removal. Over 90 % of CIP was removed within 30 min in the Z@GO-SOD/Vis/PS system with the usage of merely 0.4 g/L catalyst, and as high as 71% CIP was completely mineralized, which outperformed most of the state-of-the-art photo-Fenton catalysts. Meanwhile, Z@GO-SOD also demonstrated excellent reusability and stability. This work indicated the feasibility of utilizing solar energy for both preparation of catalyst and remediation of wastewater, paying the way for a sustainable solution for environmental solid waste pollution and water scarcity issue.

A rapid and environmentally friendly approach to synthesize hierarchical sodalite from natural aluminosilicate mineral without the involvement of any mesoporogen or post-synthesis treatment was developed. This strategy involves three important steps: the first is the depolymerization of an aluminosilicate mineral into highly reactive silicon and aluminum species with ideal meso-scale structures through activation of a sub-molten salt. The second step is the hydrolysis and condensation of the activated aluminosilicate mineral into zeolitic precursors that also have a meso-scale structure. The third is the rapid zeolitization of the zeolitic precursors through the reversed crystal growth route at room temperature and ambient pressure to form hierarchical sodalite. The physicochemical properties of the as-synthesized sodalite were systematically characterized, and the formation mechanism of the hierarchical pore structure was discussed. When used as a solid base catalyst for Knoevenagel condensation, the as-synthesized sodalite and its potassium ion-exchanged product with hierarchical micro–meso–macroporous structure both exhibited high catalytic activity and product selectivity.

Sandwich-type membranes comprising of graphene oxide (GO) as a “bun” and sodalite (SOD) nanocrystals with different morphologies and sizes as an inner layer were prepared. First, the SOD nanocrystals with spheroidal (size of 30 nm) and flake-like (size of 150 nm) morphologies were synthesized from precursor suspensions containing the same amount of GO as a modifier but different amounts of water. Second, the SOD nanocrystals with different morphologies and sizes were deposited between two GO layers to form the sandwich-type membrane. The performance of the sandwich-type membranes in H 2 /CO 2 gas separation was optimized by tuning the properties of the SOD inner layer. The membrane containing spheroidal SOD nanocrystals showed higher H 2 permeance of 4003 ± 1965 GPU and H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 45.5 ± 1.7 at 25 °C in comparison to the pristine GO membrane (1642 ± 145 GPU and H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 11.2 ± 2.1).
