Five polyhydroxybenzophenones were synthesized, then their antitumor and antioxidant activities were evaluated. Compounds 1–3 and 5 exhibited obvious antitumor activity. Among them, compounds 1 and 2 exhibited stronger cytotoxicity against hepatocarcinoma SMMC-7721 cells than cisplatin, with half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of approximately 3.86 and 5.32 μM, respectively. Compounds 1, 2, and 3 exhibited stronger antioxidant activity than trolox, with IC50 values of 11.15, 10.15, and 8.91 μM, respectively, and the antioxidant mechanism and strength of all compounds were further verified using computational chemistry. These results demonstrated that compounds 1–3 and 5 were very promising leads for further structural modification.

Foggy surfaces can damage the optical performance of devices and even cause adverse consequences like safety concerns in some cases. Various antifogging coatings have been proposed to relieve this trouble. Nevertheless, most coatings suffer from temporary fog-repellency features due to hygroscopic swelling behavior and detachable interface. Herein, we reported an antifogging coating with persistent fogging prevention via the introduction of the amphiphilic polymer and interfacial layer. With the aid of benzophenone (BP) groups, both bulk crosslinking and interfacial bonding were achieved to prevent relatively macroscopic motions of coating from the substrate under extreme conditions. In virtue of the minor swelling and interfacial adhesion, the coating could preserve the fog-free behavior after 50-cycle antifogging tests and even aging for 90 days under harsh conditions. Notably, both in vitro (pig larynx) and vivo (living rabbit) outcomes indicated excellent fog-repellency of the polymer-coated endoscope.

Benzophenone (BP) is a common initiator which is often used in the UV-curing production and related fields. However, the shortcomings such as toxicity, odor, and migration always limit the development of the traditional BP photoinitiator . Polymeric benzophenone photoinitiator (PEG-BP) was synthesized basing on polyethylene glycol (PEG), succinic anhydride , 4-hydroxybenzophenone and epichlorohydrin . The structure of PEG-BP was characterized by IR and 1 H NMR. The radiation absorption of PEG-BP was detected by UV spectrophotometer with the maximum absorption wavelength at 283 nm in acetonitrile solvent, undergone significant redshift corresponding to small molecule photoinitiator BP, thus enhanced the photosensitive efficiency of UV-curing system in the long wavelength region. Besides, PEG-BP has better water solubility than BP, thus could be used in both oil and aqueous solution. The obvious advantage of this initiator was the elimination of amine based hydrogen donors and to provide alternative hydrogen donors with easily availability and non-toxicity. The effects of molecular weights of PEG-BP, photoinitiator concentration, UV-radiation intensity and different monomers on photopolymerization kinetics were investigated in detail. The synthesized polymeric photoinitiators are attractive to be used as type II photoinitiators.
