Long-chain zwitterionic ligands have been demonstrated to greatly improve the chemical durability of colloidal CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) by the chelate effect. However, Br sources are toxic, and the reaction is so dynamic that it is hard to control the size of the crystal. We propose an eco-friendly strategy to improve the chemical durability of colloidal CsPbBr3 NCs. Nontoxic, inexpensive, and directly available benzoyl bromine was used as the Br source, and tri-n-octylphosphine oxide was used as the adjuvant to control the reaction kinetics. Uniform, monodispersed NCs with a size of ∼11 nm were obtained. They had high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of above 95% and, especially, showed strong stability against attack by polar solvents. The PLQY remained 80% even after 12 cycles of purification. Furthermore, after 24 h of continuous radiation by 405 nm laser, the photoluminescence (PL) intensity showed negligible decrease, and the wavelength and full width at half-maximum of PL had no significant change.

Europium halide perovskites have emerged as promising candidates for environmental-friendly blue-emitting materials. However, their development is hindered by low photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY, e.g. ∼2%–5% for intrinsic CsEuCl 3 ) and poor stability against air. Here, a one-step procedure is introduced for synthesizing Eu 2+ -doped CsSrCl 3 large nanocrystal clusters (CsSrCl 3 :Eu LNCs) with the effect of self-reduction, eliminating the use of conventional reductant oleylamine (OAm) and ensuring phase purity. CsSrCl 3 :Eu LNCs show photoluminescence emission centered at 430 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 25 nm and a PLQY of ∼40%, which can be further enhanced to ∼97% after passivating the surface defects by adding trioctylphosphine (TOP), the highest among all reported lead-free blue-emitting perovskite nanocrystals. The stability of CsSrCl 3 :Eu can also be improved significantly by epitaxially growing a ZnS shell on the surface. This work will shed more light on lanthanide and alkaline-earth metal (AEM)-based perovskites for nontoxic light-emitting materials.

The presence of labile bulky insulating hydrocarbon ligands in halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) passivates surface traps but concurrently makes charge transport difficult in optoelectronic devices. Early efforts routinely rely on the replacement of long-chain ligands with short-chain cousins, leading to notable changes in NC’s sizes and photophysical properties and thus making it hard to obtain devices with nearly designed emissions. Here we report a general solution-phase ligand-exchange strategy to produce organic-ligand-lacking halide perovskite NCs with high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields and good stability in ambient air. We demonstrate that the ligand exchange can be achieved by a well-controlled mild reaction of thionyl halide with the carboxylic and amine groups on the NC’s surface, resulting in nearly dry NCs with well-passivated surfaces and almost unaltered emission characteristics. Consequently, we achieve exceptionally high-performance blue perovskite NC light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with an external quantum efficiency of up to 1.35% and an extremely narrow full width at half-maximum of 14.6 nm. Our work provides a systematic framework for preparing high-quality organic-ligand-lacking perovskite NC inks that can be directly cast as films featuring effective charge transport, thereby providing the foundation for further development of a wide range of efficient perovskite optoelectronic devices.

All-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) (CsPbX 3 , X = Cl, Br, I) have emerged as potential candidates for next-generation light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, high trap states on the surface of CsPbX 3 NCs caused by ionic nature and dynamic bonding of organic ligands limit the performance of CsPbX 3 NCs-based LEDs. Herein, a microemulsion (ME)-modified strategy to decorate CsPbBr 3 NC cores with inorganic PbWO 4 is developed. It is demonstrated that ME-assisted modification plays a crucial role in bridging the WO 4 2− anion solution and the CsPbBr 3 NC suspension. Compared with pristine CsPbBr 3 NCs, the obtained PbWO 4 -modified NCs exhibit improved photoluminescence efficiency. The corresponding NC films also show enhanced stability at elevated temperature and also in humid atmosphere. Consequently, the PbWO 4 -modified NCs-based LED exhibits a pronounced improvement of electroluminescence with an external quantum efficiency from 0.2% to 5.7% and twofold enhancement of the operational lifetime through PbWO 4 passivation in comparison with that of pristine CsPbBr 3 NCs-based LED. These results show a promising pathway by ME-induced anionic modification for high-performance and stable LEDs based on perovskite NCs.

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) are emerging as promising light emitters to be actively explored for high color purity and efficient light-emitting diodes. However, the most reported lead halide perovskite nanocrystal light-emitting diodes (PNCLEDs) encountered issues of emission line width broadening and operation voltage elevating caused by the quantum confinement effect. Here, we report a new type of PNCLED using large-size CsPbBr3 PNCs overly exceeding the Bohr exciton diameter, achieving ultranarrow emission line width and rapid brightness rise around the turn-on voltage. We adopt calcium-tributylphosphine oxide hybrid ligand passivation to produce highly dispersed large-size colloidal CsPbBr3 PNCs with a weak size confinement effect and also high photoluminescence quantum yield (∼85%). Utilizing these large-size PNCs as emitters, we manifest that the detrimental effects caused by the quantum confinement effect can be avoided in the device, thereby realizing the highest color purity in green PNCLED, with a narrow full width at half-maximum of 16.4 nm and a high corrected maximum external quantum efficiency of 17.85%. Moreover, the operation half-life time of the large-size PNCLED is 5-fold of that based on smaller-size PNCs. Our work provides a new avenue for improving the performance of PNCLEDs based on unconventional large-size effects.

Heterogeneous metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are of great interest in photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications because of their high photon-to-electron conversion efficiency. However, the improvement in the stability of heterogeneous MHP is still a great challenge and has rarely been reported for polar solvent–based photocatalytic applications. Herein, we report a precisely controllable synthesis of CsPbBr 3 /CsPb 2 Br 5 heterogeneous crystals into mesoporous hollow SiO 2 spheres to form the CsPbBr 3 /CsPb 2 Br 5 @SiO 2 yolk-shell microspheres. The composition modulation by simply adjusting the ratio of Cs + and Pb 2+ could result in the perovskite structure evolution from CsPbBr 3 to CsPbBr 3 /CsPb 2 Br 5 and CsPb 2 Br 5 . The prepared CsPbBr 3 /CsPb 2 Br 5 @SiO 2 were dispersed in the aqueous rhodamine B solutions and exhibited higher photocatalytic activities than the commercial TiO 2 (P25). The improvement in the photocatalytic efficiency is mainly caused by the formation of heterogeneous CsPbBr 3 /CsPb 2 Br 5 to boost the spatial charge separation efficiency. Graphical abstract

Formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3) nanocrystals (NCs) have been demonstrated to exhibit ideal ultrapure green luminescence at 530 nm and to hold great potential in light-emitting diodes, by potentially overcoming the difficulties facing cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) NCs. However, compared to all-inorganic lead halide perovskite NCs, organic–inorganic hybrid FAPbBr3 NCs are sensitive to moisture, oxygen, and heat due to their intrinsic instability caused by the organic cations (FA+). Herein, we present an epitaxial growth method for the overgrowth of a large-band-gap cesium lead halide (Cs4PbBr6) shell on the surface of FAPbBr3 NCs. The resulting core/shell NCs show a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 97.1%, the emission with full width at half-maxima of 88 meV, and long-term environmental stability. The introduction of Cs+ into FAPbBr3 NCs can inhibit the migration of FA+ and suppress the phase transformation from cubic phase to tetragonal phase at 60 °C. Furthermore, the existence of shell can provide stronger exciton confinement and improve the thermal stability of FAPbBr3 NCs. The core/shell perovskite NCs developed in this study have the advantages of high PLQY and good stability and may contribute to the field of light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

As an emerging optoelectronic material, colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) have attracted considerable interest, but the fundamental and crucial formation mechanism of PeNCs is still unclear due to the fast speed of the chemical synthesis. Here, we developed a novel stepwise method to explore the formation process of CsPbBr3 PeNCs. Polar alcohol was used to trigger the formation reaction of PeNCs, thereby controlling the reaction speed and achieving stepwise synthesis. Our work found that the synthesis of PeNCs undergoes three formation steps: PbBr3– complexes, PbBr64– octahedrons, and perovskite crystals. The PbBr3– complexes were first formed through the coordination of Pb2+ and Br– ions in the precursor solution and then were transformed into PbBr64– octahedrons by being triggered with the polar alcohol. Finally, the PbBr64– octahedrons reacted with the free-state Cs+ ions to form perovskites. The PbBr64– octahedrons should be formed first, otherwise the Cs+ ions are always in the free state in the precursor solution so that they cannot react with lead bromide complexes to form perovskite crystals. This study provides new insights into the formation process of PeNCs and new thinking for designing and constructing PeNCs.

All-inorganic halide perovskite quantum dots are widely known to suffer luminescence degradation owing to their intrinsic instability in atmospheric circumstances. Their high surface energy and weak internal ionic bonding could result in quantum dot agglomeration and structural degradation. In this work, we demonstrate that triallylamine is an efficient recovery agent to reignite the luminescence emission of aged CsPbBr 3 quantum dots. The aged CsPbBr 3 quantum dots re-emit bright green light instantly after triallylamine etching. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicate a noticeable decrease of surface under-coordinated Pb ions content, leading to surface re-healing and photoluminescence quantum yields increasing. The unique emission recovery could reveal the details of CsPbBr 3 quantum dot surface variety and facilitate the development of perovskite quantum dot display devices.

Compared with conventional semiconductors, halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have a unique crystal structure and outstanding optoelectronic properties, offering wide potential for applications in optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, lasers, and displays. Rational technological design is providing vital support for the development of perovskite optoelectronics. Herein, monodisperse all-inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals with consistent morphology and cubic crystal phase were synthesized employing a modified one-pot hot injection method to independently modulate the stoichiometric ratios of three precursors involving cesium salt, lead source, and halide. In combination with an anion exchange reaction, mixing two kinds of perovskite NCs with different halogens enables a transition from violet emission to green and finally to red emission over the entire visible region. Additionally, optical and electrochemical tests suggested that the as-synthesized halide perovskite NCs are promising for photoelectric catalysis applications.Keywords:synthesis;CsPbX3;perovskite nanocrystals

Lead-free copper halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are emerging materials with excellent photoelectric properties. Herein, we present a colloidal synthesis route for orthorhombic Cs2CuCl4NCs with a well-defined cubic shape and an average diameter of 24 ± 2.1 nm. The Cs2CuCl4NCs exhibited bright, deep blue photoluminescence, which was attributed to the Cu(II) defects. In addition, passivating the Cs2CuCl4NCs by Ag+could effectively improve the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and environmental stability.
