Activated-Lignite-Based Super Large Granular Slow-Release Fertilizers Improve Apple Tree Growth: Synthesis, Characterizations, and Laboratory and Field Evaluations

Yafu Tang,Xinying Wang,Yuechao Yang,Bin Gao,Yongshan Wan,Yuncong C. Li,Dongdong Cheng

In this work, lignite, a low-grade coal, was modified using the solid-phase activation method with the aid of a Pd/CeO2 nanoparticle catalyst to improve its pore structure and nutrient absorption. Results indicate that the adsorption ability of the activated lignite to NO3–, NH4+, H2PO4–, and K+ was significantly higher than that of raw lignite. The activated lignite was successfully combined with the polymeric slow-release fertilizer, which exhibits typical slow-release behavior, to prepare the super large granular activated lignite slow-release fertilizer (SAF). In addition to the slow-release ability, the SAF showed excellent water-retention capabilities. Soil column leaching experiments further confirmed the slow-release characteristics of the SAF with fertilizer nutrient loss greatly reduced in comparison to traditional and slow-release fertilizers. Furthermore, field tests of the SAF in an orchard showed that the novel SAF was better than other tested fertilizers in improve the growth of young apple trees. Findings from this study suggest that the newly developed SAF has great potential to be used in apple cultivation and production systems in the future.

Magnetic chitosan-modified apple branch biochar for cadmium removal from acidic solution

Ma Yuanjie,Qiao Cong

A magnetized functional biochar (MCBC) with excellent adsorption properties for Cd 2+ removal from aqueous solutions was prepared using apple tree branches as feedstock and chitosan as the surface modifier. Batch adsorption experiment was carried out to examine adsorption performance of biochar before and after modification. Characterization techniques were employed to analyze physicochemical differences of biochar and to investigate Cd²⁺ adsorption mechanisms. The results showed that after chitosan modification and iron oxide loading, the surface of MCBC possessed abundant oxygen-containing groups and amino groups, which served as available active sites for Cd²⁺ removal. At a solution pH of 5.0, Cd²⁺ concentrations ranging from 5 to 300 mg/L, and a temperature of 298 K, the saturation adsorption capacity of MCBC (166.42 mg/g) was significantly higher than that of chitosan-modified biochar (132.28 mg/g) and original biochar (50.58 mg/g). The remova l processes were effectively characterized by Pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The primary mechanisms of Cd²⁺ adsorption included coordination, precipitation, and cation-π interactions. The removal processes were spontaneous, endothermic, and primarily driven by chemical interactions. After five regenerations, the removal amounts of MCBC for Cd²⁺ remained above 90%. The study suggested that magnetic chitosan-modified biochar was effectively applied for remediating cadmium-contaminated water.

Removal of Phloridzin by Chitosan-Modified Biochar Prepared from Apple Branches

Zhiting Ma,Wenyan Du,Zhubing Yan,Xuesen Chen,Yanfang Wang,Zhiquan Mao

Phloridzin is a phenolic acid associated with the genus Malus (Mill.) that causes apple replant disease. The removal of phloridzin is of great significance to alleviate this condition, and hence biochar was investigated for this purpose. The goal of this study was to improve the adsorption capacity of biochar for phloridzin by chemical modification. Biochar from apple branches and biochar modified with chitosan to were characterized by elemental analysis, Brunauer Emmett Teller analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Batch adsorption experiments were employed to select the optimal biochar dosage and adsorption time. The results showed that biochar treated for 24 h at 6 g L−1 achieved best adsorption properties and that the chitosan-modified biochar provided a higher adsorption capacity than the unmodified material. The influence of pH upon the adsorption was studied and the results were fitted with isotherm and kinetic equations. The results showed that adsorption process corresponds to a Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics. The qmax of the biochar was increased from 15.93 to 28.96 mg g−1 by modification with chitosan. The pH was shown to play an important role in the adsorption process. The adsorption of phloridzin to biochar was demonstrated to be a single-layer multiple component adsorption process based on chemisorption. This study provides a theoretical basis to alleviate apple replant disease.

Preparation and Nutrient Release Characteristics of Liquefied Apple Tree Branche-Based Biocoated Large Tablet Urea

Di He,Shugang Zhang,Yuechao Yang,Zhaohui Tong,Yuanyuan Yao,Jiazhuo Xie,Yafu Tang,Shan Li,Yan Liu,Mingchuan Yang

Controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) could improve crop yield and fertilizer use efficiency. However, the coating materials of conventional CRFs are mainly derived from petrochemical products, which are expensive and nondegradable, bringing potential environmental pollution. Therefore, using sustainable bio-based materials is the development direction. In this study, large tablet urea (LTU) was prepared using physical extrusion technology. The economical and biodegradable liquefied apple tree branch bio-based coating material was used to coat LTU, obtaining large tablet CRFs (LTCRUs). Also, the optimum proportion of liquefaction of apple tree branches modified by castor oil was studied. The specific surface area, surface morphology, and FTIR of LTCRU were characterized. The results showed that the surface of the LTCRU was the most smooth and the LTCRU modified with 30% castor oil presented the best controlled-release characteristics. The specific surface area of LTCRU was one-third of that of traditional small-particle fertilizers, which indicated that reducing the using dosage of coating materials is economical. Overall, this work provided theoretical and technical supports for the industrialization of biocoated superlarge tablet urea, which is conducive to the green development of agriculture.

Natural products in crop protection: thiosemicarbazone derivatives of 3-acetyl-N-benzylindoles as antifungal agents and their mechanism of action

Tianze Li,Min Lv,Houpeng Wen,Jiawei Du,Zhen Wang,Shaoyong Zhang,Hui Xu

Background Phytopathogenic fungi can cause a direct loss in economic value of agriculture. Especially Valsa mali Miyabe et Yamada, a devastating phytopathogenic disease especially threatening global apple production, is very difficult to control and manage. To discover new potential antifungal agents, a series of thiosemicarbazone derivatives of 3-acetyl- N -benzylindoles were prepared. Their antifungal activities were first tested against six typically phytopathogenic fungi including Curvularia lunata , Valsa mali , Alternaria alternate , Fusarium graminearum , Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium solani . Then their mechanism of action against V. mali was investigated. Results Derivatives displayed potent antifungal activity against V. mali . Notably, 3-acetyl- N -benzylindole thiosemicarbazone (IV-1: EC 50 : 0.59 μ g mL −1 ), whose activity was comparable to that of a commercial fungicide carbendazim (EC 50 : 0.33 μ g mL −1 ), showed greater than 98-fold antifungal activity of the precursor indole. Moreover, compound IV-1 displayed good protective and therapeutic effects on apple Valsa canker disease. By scanning electron microscope (SEM) and RNA-Seq analysis, it was demonstrated that compound IV-1 can destroy the hyphal structure and regulate the homeostasis of metabolism of V. mali via the ergosterol biosynthesis and autophagy pathways. Conclusion 3-Acetyl- N -(un)substituted benzylindoles thiosemicarbazones (IV-1–IV-5) can be studied as leads for further structural modification as antifungal agents against V. mali . Particularly, these ergosterol biosynthesis and autophagy pathways can be used as target receptors for design of novel green pesticides for management of congeneric phytopathogenic fungi. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.
