A nanocomposite was prepared by loading UiO-67 nanoparticles onto porous carbon materials derived from Ce-MOF (Ce-PC) for fluorescence detection of glyphosate. The probe (UiO-67/Ce-PC) exhibits fluorescence emission at 414 nm as the response signal under excitation at 310 nm. The fluorescence enhancement mode of UiO-67 reduces the background interference, and the introduction of Ce-PC provide hierarchical nanostructure and large specific surface area that can increase the contact availability and improve the pre-enrichment effect, ensuring UiO-67/Ce-PC with superior sensitivity. The abundant metal hydroxyl group (M–O-H) of UiO-67/Ce-PC could recognize phosphoryl groups (-PO 3 H 2 ) of glyphosate through ligand exchange, which synergizes with H-bonding interaction and electrostatic attraction to exhibit specificity toward glyphosate. The competitive coordination effects weaken the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and consequently induce the fluorescence recovery. The calibration plot of the fluorescence enhancement response of UiO-67/Ce-PC towards glyphosate was recorded in the range 0.02–30 μg mL −1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0062 μg mL −1 , which is superior to the pure UiO-67. In addition, the sensor exhibited high selectivity and satisfactory accuracy and precision with recoveries of 92.1–105.6% and RSDs below 3.4%. This work not only presents a feasible sensor for sensitive and selective determination of glyphosate from cereal samples, but also provides a promising strategy for the design of MOF-based nanocomposites to achieve trace detection of various pollutants. Glyphosate, the most widely utilized herbicide, frequently coexists with nitrogen fertilizers such as urea in soil environments. Nitrogen cycling is a key process for maintaining soil ecological functions and nutrient balance. However, the effects of co-exposure to glyphosate and urea on this process have remained unclear. This study investigated the impact of co-exposure to glyphosate (10 mg/kg) and urea (260.87 or 347.83 mg/kg, equivalent to 180 or 240 kg N/ha) on soil nitrogen cycling through a 98-day incubation experiment. Soil nutrients, enzyme activities, bacterial community structure, and functional genes were analyzed. NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N contents significantly decreased by 44.70–53.43 % and 36.74–49.12 %, respectively. Co-exposure reduced bacterial diversity and altered nitrogen cycling genes, decreasing nifH while increasing amoA and nosZ , indicating reduced nitrogen input potential and increased inorganic nitrogen loss. Enzyme analysis confirmed excessive activation of nitrification and denitrification, lowering nitrogen availability. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) showed co-exposure indirectly decreased NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N via enhanced nitrate and nitrite reductase activities. The study highlights the complex interactions between herbicides and fertilizers in soil environments and underscores the need for further research to understand the implications for wider soil health and crop production in agriculture systems.

Effects of glyphosate on survival, developmental rate, larval weight, and midgut bacterial diversity of Apis mellifera were tested in the laboratory. Larvae were reared in vitro and fed diet containing glyphosate 0.8, 4, and 20 mg/L. The dependent variables were compared with negative control and positive control (dimethoate 45 mg/L). Brood survival decreased in 4 or 20 mg/L glyphosate treatments but not in 0.8 mg/L, and larval weight decreased in 0.8 or 4 mg/L glyphosate treatments. Exposure to three concentrations did not affect the developmental rate. Furthermore, the intestinal bacterial communities were determined using high-throughput sequencing targeting the V3–V4 regions of the 16S rDNA. All core honey bee intestinal bacterial phyla such as Proteobacteria (30.86%), Firmicutes (13.82%), and Actinobacteria (11.88%) were detected, and significant changes were found in the species diversity and richness in 20 mg/L glyphosate group. Our results suggest that high concentrations of glyphosate are deleterious to immature bees.

The increasing presence of glyphosate has raised concerns about its potential impact on the environment and human health. The oxidative degradation of glyphosate during biotic and abiotic pathways usually leads to the formation of the toxic and persistent intermediates aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). In this work, we report that the formation of AMPA during the photocatalytic degradation of glyphosate can be determined by its adsorption modes on the photocatalyst. The maximum accumulation of AMPA reached 31% on TiO 2 photocatalyst. However, the formation of AMPA was markedly suppressed in the presence of F – ions, while the production of inorganic species such as PO 4 3– and NO 3 – was largely enhanced. In situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transforms infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that the glyphosate was adsorbed on surface of TiO 2 by its phosphate and carboxylate groups, while the adsorption site was changed to its amine group in the presence of F – ions. Such a change in the adsorption mode of glyphosate would facilitate the C–N bonds cleavage in glyphosate molecules, and inhibit the formation of AMPA, which makes the degradation of glyphosate go along a less toxic degradation pathway. The present study reveals a new relationship between the degradation pathway and the adsorption mode of glyphosate, which may also be helpful in other systems of abiotic degradation of glyphosate.

Highly sensitive monitoring of pesticides has garnered attention for food safety. Here, a ratiometric fluorescent probe (AG-CDs-Al 3+ /CdTe QDs) was fabricated for specific and sensitive sensing of glyphosate. Surface modifications revealed the chelation-enhanced fluorescence process between the surface -OH of AG-CDs and Al 3+ . Positively charged green-emission AG-CDs-Al 3+ assembled with negatively charged red-emission CdTe QDs, and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) occurred from CdTe QDs to AG CDs-Al 3+ . Glyphosate specifically coordinated with Al 3+ , causing remarkable variations in F 500 /F 630 (linear range, 0.2–4.0 μM; detection limit, 5.7 nM) and a distinguishable green-yellow-red color change on the paper platform (linear range, 0.5–8.0 μM; detection limit, 26 nM). Furthermore, for real sample analysis, the sensor has the advantages of fast response (5 min), excellent accuracy (spiked recoveries, 95.0–105.0 %), high precision (relative standard deviation, < 3.33 %), and superior specificity, which endowed the designed sensing platform with great potential practicality in the field of food analysis.

Glyphosate as an effective broad-spectrum herbicide is frequently detected in various water and soil resources. Given the ubiquity of β-MnO 2 and δ-MnO 2 colloids in groundwater and soil, the abiotic removal of glyphosate by MnO 2 colloids was investigated. β-MnO 2 colloids exhibited superior glyphosate removal efficiency, up to 37%, compared to 21% for δ-MnO 2 colloids at a pH of 4.0. Glyphosate removal involved simultaneous adsorption and oxidation process , identified by HRTEM , NH 3 -TPD, XPS , LC-MS, FTIR analyses and the occurrence of aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and Mn 2+ . Moreover, adsorption dominated the removal of glyphosate by two MnO 2 colloids. The solution pH had a substantial effect on glyphosate removal. Co-existing ions in the solution, such as carbonate (CO 3 2− ), phosphate (Na 2 HPO 4 , NaH 2 PO 4 ) and humic acid (HA), were also found to impede glyphosate removal. Phosphate, in particular, exhibited a strong competitive effect for adsorption sites on both MnO 2 colloids. Of them, the removal of glyphosate by β-MnO 2 colloids was more prone to occur due to its higher specific surface area , abundant oxygen vacancies , and moderate acid sites. However, δ-MnO 2 colloids presented a stronger oxidation capacity than that of β-MnO 2 colloids due to the quicker generation rate of Mn 2+ . Finally, AMPA was the same products by two MnO 2 colloids in the oxidation process, revealing the degradation pathway based on the cleavage of C–N bond. Therefore, by comparing kinetics and mechanisms of glyphosate removal by β- and δ-MnO 2 colloids, this study improves us better understanding for the behavior of glyphosate in the environment.

BACKGROUND The excess use of glyphosate in both agricultural and nonagricultural areas has led to tremendous health (e.g. cardiac and respiratory impacts) and environmental concerns worldwide. There is an urgent need to find efficient ways to remove glyphosate residue from the aqueous environment. RESULTS Herein, an effective method for the removal of aqueous glyphosate is developed by employing nano-CuFe 2 O 4 modified biochar (BC) as an adsorbent. The CuFe 2 O 4 @BC adsorbents were prepared through hydrolyzing phragmite powders at 500 °C, followed by a simple coprecipitation method. The influence of initial glyphosate concentration, temperature, pH, time and coexisting species on the adsorption behavior of CuFe 2 O 4 @BC to glyphosate were fully examined. CONCLUSION It was found that the adsorption of glyphosate onto CuFe 2 O 4 @BC is highly dependent on the initial glyphosate concentration, pH and temperature, as well as coexisting species. The Freundlich and Langmuir models fitted the equilibrium isotherm data well, indicating the presence of both physisorption and chemisorption. In addition, the adsorption kinetic is well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicated that chemical adsorption may dominate the adsorption process. The CuFe 2 O 4 @BC adsorption of glyphosate presented a maximum adsorption capacity of 269.4 mg g −1 within 240 min, under 600 mg L −1 of glyphosate solution at 298 K and pH 4; this performance exceeds all other biochar-derived adsorbents for the removal of aqueous glyphosate encountered in the open literature. Such a cost-effective, high-performance adsorbent shows a great potential for the removal of aqueous glyphosate in industry. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Glyphosate has excellent herbicidal activity, and its extensive use may induce residue in the environment and enter into humans living through the food chain, causing negative impact. Here, water-soluble 1.55 nm size nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs) with strong blue fluorescence were synthesized using sodium citrate and adenine. The maximum excitation and emission wavelengths of NCDs were 380 nm and 440 nm, respectively. The above synthesized NCDs were first used for the construction of a fluorescence sensor for glyphosate detection. It was found that Cu2+could quench the fluorescence of NCDs effectively through the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process, which was confirmed using fluorescence lifetime measurements. Additionally, the fluorescence was restored with the addition of glyphosate. Hence, a sensitive turn-on fluorescence sensor based on NCDs/Cu2+for glyphosate analysis was developed. The LODs of glyphosate for water and rice samples were recorded as 0.021 μg/mL and 0.049 μg/mL, respectively. The sensor was applied successfully for ultrasensitive and selective detection of glyphosate in environmental water and rice samples with satisfied recoveries from 82.1% to 113.0% using a simple sample pretreatment technique. The proposed strategy can provide a significant potential for monitoring glyphosate residue in water and agricultural product samples. Keywords:carbon quantum dots;fluorescence;glyphosate detection;water;rice

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is easy to combine with residual pesticides and affect their morphology and environmental behavior. Given that the binding mechanism between DOM and the typical herbicide glyphosate in soil is not yet clear, this study used adsorption experiments, multispectral techniques, density functional theory, and pot experiments to reveal the interaction mechanism between DOM and glyphosate on Mollisol in farmland and their impact on the environment. The results show that the adsorption of glyphosate by Mollisol is a multilayer heterogeneous chemical adsorption process. After adding DOM, due to the early formation of DOM and glyphosate complex, the adsorption process gradually became dominated by single-layer chemical adsorption, and the adsorption capacity increased by 1.06 times. Glyphosate can quench the endogenous fluorescence of humic substances through a static quenching process dominated by hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces, and instead enhance the fluorescence intensity of protein substances by affecting the molecular environment of protein molecules. The binding of glyphosate to protein is earlier, of which affinity stronger than that of humic acid. In this process, two main functional groups (C–O in aromatic groups and C–O in alcohols, ethers and esters) exist at the binding sites of glyphosate and DOM. Moreover, the complexation of DOM and glyphosate can effectively alleviate the negative impact of glyphosate on the soil. This study has certain theoretical guidance significance for understanding the environmental behavior of glyphosate and improving the sustainable utilization of Mollisol. Graphical abstract

The rapid and sensitive detection of glyphosate herbicide in agricultural products is urgent need. Herein, we develop a photosensitive Fe 3 O v -Mo/P nanozyme with defect-rich rough surface by the co-precipitation method. In particular, the Fe 3 O v -Mo/P nanozyme with high-percentage oxygen vacancy (OV) defects and rough surface exhibited superior peroxidase (POD)-like activity and kinetics. More intriguingly, Fe 3 O v -Mo/P nanozyme with strong optical absorption in near-infrared (NIR) region showed excellent light-promoted POD-like activity. It was found that the defect-rich rough surface is conducive to the adsorption of glyphosate to inhibit the POD-like activity of Fe 3 O v -Mo/P. Under near-infrared laser irradiation, the inhibitory effect of glyphosate on the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by Fe 3 O v -Mo/P was increased by 2.64 times. A colorimetric platform was developed for the detection of glyphosate with a low detection limit of 0.032 mg L -1 and good selectivity. The method was used to determine the residual glyphosate in coffee, and the recovery efficiency was between 91.20–104.00 %. This work that combines the advantage of defect engineering and NIR provides a strategy for developing high-active nanozyme in pesticide assay.

The ongoing poisoning of agricultural products has pushed the security problem to become an important issue. Among them, exceeding the standard rate of pesticide residues is the main factor influencing the quality and security of agricultural products. Monitoring pesticide residues and developing simple, yet ultrasensitive detection systems for pesticide residues are urgently needed. In this study, we successfully developed a novel rhodamine derivative as fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor R-G for the rapid, selective and ultrasensitive detection of glyphosate pesticide residue in aqueous solution. Through a Cu 2+ -indicator displacement strategy, glyphosate can displace an indicator ( R-G ) from a Cu 2+ -indicator complex due to its strong affinity to bind with Cu 2+ to give a turn-on fluorescence and distinct color change. Moreover, a test strip was also fabricated to achieve a facile detection of glyphosate pesticide. To demonstrate the possibility of practical applications, glyphosate was detected on the surface of cabbage and in a spiked soil sample. The detection limit of 4.1 nM and the response time of 2 min indicate that the method is enough sensitive and rapid to detect the glyphosate residue at or below levels that pose a health risk.

Glyphosate is a commonly used herbicide known for its high performance in killing certain plants and grasses; however, its use is regulated due to its harmful effects on the aquatic environment. The present study investigated and compared the toxic mechanisms of glyphosate on Microcystis aeruginosa (a toxin-producing cyanobacterium) under 2 conditions: 0‰ saline media (experiment I) and 2.5‰ saline media (experiment II). The results indicated that an appropriate concentration of glyphosate provided a phosphate source for M. aeruginosa , resulting in an increased specific growth rate in both experimental groups compared with the controls. Glyphosate-enhanced alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity increased by up to 1.37-fold in experiment I and 1.68-fold in experiment II. Moreover, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) decreased at glyphosate concentrations below 1.2 mg L –1 but increased at concentrations greater than 1.2 mg L –1 in experiment I, whereas SOD and CAT activities decreased in experiment II and declined by 64 and 49% in the 30 mg L −1 treatments. Furthermore, the transcript abundances of the pyruvate carboxylase ( pcB ), microcystin synthetase B ( mcyB ) , and paired-like homeobox ( phoX ) genes were up-regulated by up to 6.92-, 3.63-, and 2.27-fold in experiment I and 6.74-, 6.55-, and 4.86-fold in experiment II after 96 h of incubation. The addition of glyphosate stimulated the production of dissolved organic matter including tryptophan-like substances, fulvic acid-like substances, (marine) humic acid-like substances, and microcystin–leucine-arginine in the culture. In conclusion, glyphosate stimulates the proliferation of M. aeruginosa and enhances the release of dissolved organic matter in saltwater ecosystems.
