The development of high-energy-density Li-ion batteries is hindered by the irreversible capacity loss during the initial charge-discharge process. Therefore, pre-lithiation technology has emerged in the past few decades as a powerful method to supplement the undesired lithium loss, thereby maximizing the energy utilization of LIBs and extending their cycle life. Lithium oxalate (Li 2 C 2 O 4 ), with a high lithium content and excellent air stability, has been considered one of the most promising materials for lithium compensation. However, the sluggish electrochemical decomposition kinetics of the material severely hinders its further commercial application. Here, we introduce a recrystallization strategy combined with atomic Ni catalysts to modulate the mass transport and decomposition reaction kinetics. The decomposition potential of Li 2 C 2 O 4 is significantly decreased from ∼4.90V to ∼4.30V with a high compatibility with the current battery systems. In compared to the bare NCM//Li cell, the Ni/N-rGO and Li 2 C 2 O 4 composite (Ni-LCO) modified cell releases an extra capacity of ∼11.7 %. Moreover, this ratio can be magnified in the NCM//SiO x full cell, resulting in a 30.4 % higher reversible capacity. Overall, this work brings the catalytic paradigm into the pre-lithiation technology, which opens another window for the development of high-energy-density battery systems.

The demand for lithium compensation materials is becoming urgent as energy density requirements increase. As next-generation anodes, mixed silicon and carbon (Si–C) materials are limited by low efficiency in the first cycle owing to the formation of a solid electrolyte interphase film. However, most compensation materials are water- and oxygen-sensitive and exhibit low electrochemical activity and decomposition efficiency. In this study, water- and oxygen-stable lithium oxalate (Li2C2O4) was developed to enhance the capacity and cycle-life of the lithium-ion battery. Various metal oxides were screened to improve the electrochemical activity of Li2C2O4. Co3O4 exhibited the strongest catalytic performance, and the catalytic mechanism of Co3O4 on Li2C2O4 was studied by density functional theory. Ultrasonic atomization drying was used to combine Co3O4 quantum dots (Co3O4-QDs) with Li2C2O4 for improved efficiency. The electrochemical activity of the modified Li2C2O4 improved, and the decomposition voltage decreased from 4.65 to 4.0 V. The modified Li2C2O4 exhibits catalytic activity, and it can be used in LiFePO4, which has weak catalytic activity; the decomposition efficiency in the LiFePO4 system increased from 34.16 to 99.10%. In the Si–C//LiFePO4 full battery system, the first cycle discharge capacity increased from 80 to 160 mA h g–1; the lost capacity of the first cycle was fully compensated for. Additionally, the CO2 produced by Li2C2O4 decomposition could inhibit the decomposition of the electrolyte, further improving the cycle performance of the battery.

In conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the active lithium from the lithium-containing cathode is consumed by the formation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) at the anode during the first charge, resulting in irreversible capacity loss. Prelithiation additives can provide additional active lithium to effectively compensate for lithium loss. Lithium oxalate is regarded as a promising ideal cathode prelithiation agent; however, the electrochemical decomposition of lithium oxalate is challenging. In this work, a hollow and porous composite microsphere was prepared using a mixture of lithium oxalate, Ketjen Black and transition metal oxide catalyst, and the formulation was optimized. Owing to the compositional and structural merits, the decomposition voltage of lithium oxalate in the microsphere was reduced to 3.93 V; when being used as an additive, there is no noticeable side effect on the performance of the cathode material. With 4.2% of such an additive, the first discharge capacity of the LiFePO4‖graphite full cell increases from 139.1 to 151.9 mAh g−1, and the coulombic efficiency increases from 88.1% to 96.3%; it also facilitates the formation of a superior SEI, leading to enhanced cycling stability. This work provides an optimized formula for developing an efficient prelithiation agent for LIBs.

Silicon-based anode materials attract ever-increasing attention owing to their high theoretical capacity. However, their practical application is significantly hindered by the dramatic volume change during the charge/discharge process, during which not only the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) but also the electrode might be ruined. Here, we propose a H-bond network-regulated binder by introducing low-molecular-weight cross-linkers, lithium oxalate and α-cyclodextrin (α-CD), into alginate (Alg). The balance between the binding strength and Li ion diffusion is realized through the control of the ratio between them. Lithium oxalate and α-CD can effectively regulate the H-bond network of the binder by forming intermolecular dynamic H bonds with Alg and reducing the intramolecular ones. Although the hybrid binder shows lower adhesion force than Alg, better electrode integrity is obtained during the charge/discharge process. Meanwhile, Li+ transportation is facilitated due to extra Li+ supplied by lithium oxalate, thereby achieving better rate capability.

Hydrolysis catalyzed by metal oxides is an effective approach for removing carbonyl sulfide (COS) from blast furnace gas, but constructing highly active catalytic sites that function efficiently under low–temperature conditions remains a fundamental challenge. In this work, perovskite–type niobate catalysts (KNbO 3 , NaNbO 3 , and LiNbO 3 ) are synthesized via a sol–gel method and subsequently modified under a strongly reducing NH 3 atmosphere at elevated temperatures to simultaneously generate oxygen vacancies and nitrogen dopants (both substitutional and interstitial), thereby significantly enhancing their catalytic performance and H 2 S selectivity for COS hydrolysis. Among them, NH 3– treated N–KNbO 3 achieves 100% COS conversion and 100% H 2 S selectivity at 100 °C. Comprehensive physicochemical characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that NH 3 treatment achieves a “four–in–one” effect: oxygen vacancy engineering, nitrogen doping, morphology engineering, and modulation of surface active sites. This study systematically elucidates the structure–activity relationship underlying the synergistic interplay between nitrogen doping and oxygen vacancies in KNbO 3 , demonstrates the cooperative promotional role of oxygen vacancies and interstitial nitrogen during hydrolysis, and underscores the critical importance of surface reactive oxygen species and weakly basic sites. These findings provide both a theoretical foundation and practical design strategies for developing high–performance catalysts for low–temperature COS hydrolysis.

The cobalt-free, high-voltage spinel-type cathode LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) exhibits high energy and power densities, rendering it a promising candidate for incorporation into next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its high operating voltage of 4.7 V can lead to electrolyte decomposition, causing structural damage. In addition, the irreversible loss of active lithium in the early cycles reduces capacity performance, hindering its commercial application. To take full advantage of the catalytic effect of LNMO and the prelithiation of sacrificial salt, this work involved blending sacrificial salts (Li2C2O4, Li2CO3, and CH3COOLi) with LNMO to form prelithiated electrodes (LNMO-Sac) and investigating the influence of different sacrificial salts on the performance of LIBs. The results demonstrate that LNMO could efficiently catalyze the decomposition of sacrificial salts and promote the formation of a more stable electrode–electrolyte interface after cycling to mitigate structure destruction of electrodes caused by electrolyte decomposition. Compared with other sacrificial salts, Li2C2O4 provided a highly efficient supplement of active lithium and improved the electrochemical performance of the battery. Thus, LNMO-Li2C2O4 achieved an excellent discharge capacity of 137.9 mAh g–1 at 1C, and capacity retention of 85.9% after 500 cycles, superior to that of LNMO without prelithiation. Moreover, the LNMO-LO/Gr full cell presented an initial capacity of 117.9 mAh g–1 and retained 79.4 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles. This work demonstrates the feasibility of a sacrificial salt as a lithium replenishment strategy for LNMO in practical applications.

Strategic engineering of heteroatomic doping configurations to precisely regulate the directional migration efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers has been demonstrated as a pivotal approach to overcome inherent kinetic limitations in semiconductor-based photocatalytic systems. Li/Co co-doped MoS 2 nanoflower structures (MLC2) were synthesized via a single-step hydrothermal protocol and applied for the photocatalytic degradation of chlorsulfuron in aqueous environments. Density functional theory analysis revealed that Li and Co atoms occupied Mo sites, generating electron-deficient centers that modified photogenerated electron transfer pathways. This strategic doping engineering enhanced charge separation efficiency, as evidenced by transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and Tafel curves. The optimized MLC2 catalyst demonstrated exceptional degradation performance, achieving 89.72 % chlorsulfuron removal within 360 min under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm; 300 W), corresponding to quasi-first-order rate constants (k) 52.46-fold and 3.37-fold higher than those of undoped MoS 2 (k = 1.22 E −4 min −1 ) and Li-MoS 2 (k = 0.0019 min −1 ), respectively. The dominant role of photogenerated electrons, along with their generation and transfer pathways, had been experimentally validated. Furthermore, MLC2 demonstrated considerable potential in practical applications.

The metatitanic acid H 2 TiO 3 (HTO) with high selectivity shows potential in lithium extraction from salt lake brine. Nevertheless, the sluggish adsorption kinetics and unsatisfying actual adsorption capacity hinder H 2 TiO 3 industrial application. Herein, a rare earth element Nd-doped H 2 TiO 3 (Nd-HTO-1 %) was synthesized. The crystallinity, morphology, hydrophilicity, adsorption property and mechanism of Nd-HTO-1 % were systematically characterized by a series of techniques. Interestingly, Nd-doping promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies, thereby increasing the density of surface hydroxyl groups and making the surface high-hydrophilic and particle size decreased. After 1 % Nd-doping, high-hydrophilic HTO was obtained with a contact angle of 16.5°. The adsorption capacity of Nd-HTO-1 % increased by 12.5 % compared with HTO, and the equilibrium time of adsorption reduced by half to 4 h. After eight cycles, Nd-HTO-1 % still showed a considerable adsorption capacity of 39.69 mg·g −1 . In the meantime, the dissolution loss of titanium is merely 0.14 %, showing excellent cycling stability. Combined with the considerable selectivity exhibiting in Qarhan salt lake brine, it demonstrates potential in utilization of Nd-doped H 2 TiO 3 for lithium extraction from salt lake brine.

N-type tin oxide (SnO2) films are commonly used as an electron transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, SnO2 films are of poor quality due to facile agglomeration under a low-temperature preparation method. In addition, energy level mismatch between the SnO2 and perovskite (PVK) layer as well as interfacial charge recombination would cause open-circuit voltage loss. In this work, alkali metal oxalates (M-Oxalate, M = Li, Na, and K) are doped into the SnO2 precursor to solve these problems. First, it is found that the hydrolyzed alkali metal cations tend to change colloid size distribution of SnO2, in which Na-Oxalate with suitable basicity leads to most uniform colloid size distribution and high-quality SnO2-Na films. Second, the electron conductivity is enhanced by slightly agglomerated SnO2-Na, which facilitates the transmission of electrons. Third, alkali metal cations increase the conduction band level of SnO2 in the sequence of K+, Na+, and Li+ to promote band alignment between ETLs and perovskite. Based on the optimized film quality and energy states of SnO2-Na, the best PSC efficiency of 20.78% is achieved with a significantly enhanced open-circuit voltage of 1.10 V. This work highlights the function of alkali metal salts on the colloid particle distribution and energy level modulation of SnO2.
